Being American, our releases never got the fab liner notes the UK albums did, and I was just struck by one line from 'Beatles For Sale' - "The kids of AD 2000 will draw from the music much the same sense of well being and warmth as we do today." I used to devour everything on LP covers: the photos, the track listing and credits, and any narrative (which there was a lot in the early Beatles days). That's something that is completely lost in these days of Spotify etc. Andrew's videos are fascinating, focusing not so much on the main item, the photo, but all those miniscule details. Andrew has answered in a few minutes questions I've been carrying around with me for over 50 years. Thanks Andrew.

A thoroughly interesting explanation on Beatles albums covers. I've always loved their covers and foreign variations as well. I was aware of the photographers and places but this is the first time I've seen an upload on the subject. I think album art is a crucial part to collecting and marketing. Many rock 'n' rollers have beautiful album art too, such as Gene Vincent and of course Elvis, Johnny Hallyday in France has fantastic album covers. Conversely, The Rolling Stones and many big bands and those of recent times do not have the same level of album iconic art given to all their albums.
Hi, fascinating as always! I just found that my later 1963 copy of With the Beatles mono, E. J. Day cover, does not rely on the adhesive power of the front slick alone but has one flap inwards, if you understand what I mean, which brings it halfway from the flipback covers (cardboard folded over to the back) to later covers with 'flip-in' construction, i.e. two flaps of the front panel folded inwards and glued to the rear panel. I guess that whole patents business was somewhat futile. Record covers were not meant to last a lifetime. The Garrod & Lofthouse two-piece solution was just designed to save costs (which I doubt it did), but as it turned out the fact that the rear panel was not laminated (a practice other nations sadly repeated years later after they had produced much more durable sleeves for Beatles releases for some years) made it so much harder for today's collectors to find clean copies of the UK originals. And talking of laminate: do you think you could address that problem? It's very hard to find early UK Beatles records without creases (actually creases of the fairly thin cardboard and resulting folds of the laminate), laminate lift-offs (or bubbles) etc. That was due to Clarifoil, the laminate brandname at the time (and now, I believe), wasn't it? I'm looking forward to part two (and why the hell the white album went off-white so quickly or whatever news you might have for us).

My father had an allotment behind Garrod & Lofthouse factory in Caterham Surrey, occasionally spare album covers would blow over the hedge, one day I picked up a good quality cover oldies but goodies I held on to it for years, as a fan of the Beatles, I was intrigued by the track bad boy which I had never heard of. It was years later that I finally purchased the album proper.

The STEREO printed on cover of Rubber Soul is extremely rare to begin with but the BLACK “ STEREO “ is really rare .
It’s only on the very first pressing as people could not see the word STEREO when it was printed in black .
- It blended into the dark area of top right of cover - So G & L changed it asap to SILVER so people could see it easier .
I’ve sold both, I got substantially more lucre for the black stereo cover .
Fascinating insight in to some very detailed aspects of the Beatles products!

In the 1990s I found a nice condition 'Please Please Please Me' LP in a charity (thrift) shop with an 'Angus McBean' credited cover for...£1.50. Excitedly, I slid out the disc to see if it was a gold label original and discovered a Jim Reeves LP inside. I was very upset by this as you can imagine.

Very interesting! The first thing I do when I see a Beatles LP in a record store is to check if it has an Ernest J Day cover. I haven't found a single one yet! I knew they were uncommon, but especially so, it seems. I do love those laminated covers! I have some original UK Capitol albums from the late 50s and early 60s (Sinatra, King Cole etc.) and they still look magnificent! My US copies sound great, but the covers look terribly crude and flimsy in comparison!
Just checked my copy and it's an Ernest J Day. It's in good condition too!
It's a fourth pressing so not worth that much.

Hi Andrew, Henry here again, not sure how i missed this posting, just a couple of things to add, either of the GOTTA / GOT A WTB sleeves can appear randomly on any copy up until the last flipbacks of 1971/2, no idea why, & all the AHDN outline stereo copies i have seen would seem to indicate a date of 1968 ( again no idea why ) just as the small stereo AHDN's seem to appear slightly later for that album c 1966 although EMI did indeed first introduce the small stereo designator for all their new titles from as you say later-mid 65. As for PPM in case i missed it the mid-sized mono sleeves only exist on EJD, Garrod jump straight from large mono to small mono c late-mid 65 - more to add on part 2

What a fascinating and well-presented video! Just dug out my copies of Please Please Me and With The Beatles. The former is a fourth pressing Ernest J. Day version and the latter is a Garrod and Lofthouse. Who knew record covers could be so interesting? I look forward to the second half of this documentary.

Garrod & Lofthouse was the printing company where they used for their UK Beatles albums, and so did the original Tamla Motown albums from the UK where they took the actual covers from the US releases and copied it and reprinted by Garrod & Lofthouse using the Tamla Motown name on the label where it plastered the US Motown logo including Motown, Tamla, Gordy, and Soul. The artists were Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Diana Ross & the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, the Four Tops, and others for their album covers that were printed by Garrod & Lofthouse, along with Motown’s manufacturing and copyright in the US were replaced by EMI Records Ltd. and the Emitex record cleaner advertisements on the back.

I have 2 British mono With The Beatles which I thought were identical, but I just checked and while both have the "Gotta" spelling, one was printed by Garrod and Lofthouse while the other was Ernest J Day. The latter is far worse for wear, however this could just be because the previous owner hadn't taken great care of it, having written the number 8 in grey marker on the front.

Thanks. There were no blank mono sleeves. As I mentioned at 7:59 some covers had the mono and stereo indicators printed on top of the laminate. The 'ghost' mono covers you mention we those which had had it rubbed off, either intentionally or by accident.
As a US fan, I grew up with the Capitol issues and remained pretty ignorant of the UK covers until 1988 when the CDs started to catch on. Those US covers are part of my early memories of Beatle albums, but I love the UK covers which are much more stylish. EMI’s “template” cover design - like Please Please Me - is great. If I could collect them all, I would!
In the 70s, I used to collect as many different Beatles Capitol Records & British Imports which was crazy since I was a kid in the US and didn't havethe luxury of spending on imports or looking for older albums from the sixties. I eventually sold all my collections and didn't look back. It was fun, but I had too many albums. I also thought the UK artwork & packaging was superior to the US versions at the time. The albums inspired me to become a graphic designer. Perhaps, you can do a similar video on Capitol Records version of The Beatles albums?

8:46 I notice that, in the revision of the spelling of "You Really Gotta Hold on Me" to "You Really Got a Hold on Me", the space between the "Got" and the "a" in the latter feels oddly wide. In fact, it seems to match the length of the letter "T" in that font. Did they just cover up/remove the extra "T" in "Gotta", rather than fully retyping the song title?

Hi Andy , I knew a printer who lived at Pidley , just outside St. Ives , and we used to trade from each other bits n bobs.
He once gave me about 30 unconstructed single LP sleeves that he said were the overrun of a special McCartney sleeve his firm were asked to make. It’s laminated , completely white with no printing on it other than the printers colour bars that would have been hidden if constructed.
He had no idea from which LP this was made for (and neither did I) but just recently I saw a few of these “special” sleeves made for in-house editions of Flaming Pie (I think??) with what appears to be a rubber stamped “flaming pie” motif applied to it , so I think that’s where they were made for.
He was a 100% genuine guy and gave me the sleeves so he had no reason to make it up.
Other than my word for it and his word for it to me , there’s just no way to be able to prove what they are ...unless the “colour bars” printed on the flipback are some kind of barcode telling what they are....
I’ve still got most of the 30+ that he gave me just using the odd occasional one or two for nice LP’s that I acquire without any kind of sleeve.......when you construct them you can make them flipback or hidden non-flipback

So interesting! The only thing I would say is for the album With the Beatles, the darker withdrawn cover was only for garrod and lofthouse covers and was not with Ernest J day covers. But I really like this video Andrew!! You do an amazing job with it!!

Really? I’ve never seen one. I was just seeing in the book Beatles on parlophone records with Bruce spizer on page 155 on first paragraph he said that only garrod and lofthouse covers were darker. Could you show one?

Can't wait to see the stuff on Let It Be. Maybe you can confirm what I've read that Klein blocked the LP box with the book being sold/made for the U.S. market. Supposedly because he felt Americans wouldn't buy it/too expensive. I know someone else was responsible for the Apple logo being red on US (and some other places) LP copies, can't remember who. There were those freaky Apple logos on some export copies, almost like a rainbow on the back cover, maybe UK, Europe. Then there's the Parlophone logo export copies from the UK as well. Should be an interesting video for all the covers, like this one was. Thanks a lot!
Alan Steckler chose to go with red apple labels for LIB. He worked for Klein.

It's another reminder that as forward-thinking as the band was in its own right, they were fortunate to be involved with so many like-mimded people.
With The Beatles in Australia released in February 1964 had a different cover reason being as the album was rushed released EMI (Australia) couldn't reproduced the original cover so they opted for a different one same go for the Beatles For Sale album
The reason was slightly different; at the time, EMI Australia had a deliberate policy to give all design work to local employees, regardless of whether they had access to the original artwork or not. Union rules and all that.

The no variations of the UK Help cover is interesting, I have just take ownership of a Help album which has the outlined Mono logo top right, you can clearly see a Stereo outlined logo underneath the mono logo....Any info on this please?
:D - check very carefully and you might also find some other oddities with EMI album sleeves... I found one which had a slightly thicker back or front inners, this was glued inside a back part which seems to have been reused - perhaps to strengthen it? I made this discovery when I repaired a sleeve, which had come unstuck, recently. The reused 'inner/back' has a (printed?) black line going up it. It is a Garrod & Lofthouse sleeve (at least the 'back inner' is). It also has a R 3288 code printed at the bottom of it. (I'm not sure what record or what sleeve it was from now, as I simply assumed it was a mistake). Just saying, for where there is one, there might be another?
Garrod & Lofthouse was the company that used cover all of the UK albums on various labels like Parlophone, Stateside, Columbia, HMV, and Tamla Motown which were known for their US albums that were exported to the UK. Garrod & Lofthouse took all of the US Motown albums, and printed on glossy covers with three tabs on the back. Just like what they did with all of the Beatles UK albums and others from the EMI family of labels.

In Australia they only printed one sleeve for both mono and stereo, they just used to put a stereo sticker that wrapped around the left side, front to back. We mostly had the same sleeves as the UK ones, except for With The Beatles (because for some reason the UK one wasn't available) and Beatles For Sale (which is a collage of live shots from the Australian tour; it's bloody awful and not a patch on the UK one.)
I have the 1987 Beatles for Sale vinyl with alternate 1964 Festival Hall(?) live shots of the band on a yellow background cover (& it wasn't a gatefold sleeve) I can actually remember buying that album on a rainy Saturday in a Parramatta record store in 1988 that has long since gone out of business) Apparently John Lennon rang up EMI Australia and asked them to change the cover to the British version & they refused. Also remember seeing the alternate With the Beatles vinyl cover in second hand record stores in the late 80's (Blacktown second hand record store across from the station - I spent many an afternoon after school in the late 80s in that establishment.
My Rubber Soul Parlophone one box from 1969/70 has an Ernest J Day cover. Either EMI still had plenty of covers left over in 1969/70 or the hadn't bothered to change the text on the cover. Maybe a Frankenstein?
Other EMI albums including the US albums that were on Tamla Motown had the same cover artwork that were from the US and exported to the UK for their Tamla Motown releases. Either had Ernest J Day, or none with Emitex on the back like the one used on all Beatles and Tamla Motown UK albums.
Hello Andrew. I just have a question about the With the Beatles Sleeves. With the Ernest J Day sleeves being rarer in With the Beatles, in your opinion, would a non gothic front cover image with the "GOTTA" on the back of Ernest J day sleeve be more valuable than a Garrod & Lofthouse 1st press cover with the gothic image? (Both in same condition)
Can you do a video on pressings from OTHER than UK? Like US? Here in Canada we actually have some really nice pressings too. Our Abbey Road from 2015 and 1969 are both as good as the Davis Cut from the original pressing

I have an U.K. Stereo copy of Revolver which has no Stereo indicator print on the front. With that being said it’s still retains the footballs on the rear panel. Have you seen this before? Your thoughts please.

Hello, I am wondering do you ofte see EJ Day Please Please Me covers that are their later 1964 onwards 3 flap flipback version? I have just acquired a one of these and it seems very genuine but I have never seen any others for sale
The last EJ Day PPM covers c.1965 have the 'mid-sized' mono/stereo indicators.
@@Parlogram thank you for your response. It is strange because this one is a large sized mono. I originally thought it may be counterfeit but its front image is quite sharp like my other EJ Day covers, it is properly laminated and has the earlier eggshell finish to the back panel too, yet it is of the later type of construction used on rubber soul, revolver etc. It came with the most common 1963 issue record inside but with later 17 / 46 mothers, maybe pressed just before the 2N recut. It is very confusing
Would you do a similar series on The Rolling Stones? Decca has their own unique cover manufacture and variation.

Too bad that the lush gatefold for BFS was not retained in some other countries. Germany comes to mind.
BFS was lush but in the UK the next album, Help, went back no gatefold whereas the US Help was gatefold. I wonder why the UK is the poor relation.
@@KevinTheCaravanner US Help was a different album. The Help version with gatefold AND UK tracklist came out in Japan.
@@TheHutt that’s interesting. Japanese albums often have something more. I’m into ELO too and I’ve heard the Japanese albums sometimes had an extra track.

Though for the best sound quality, I'd go with the German 1977 version (on Apple label, A-2/B-3) or the UK 6th pressing (-4/-3) by Harry T. Moss.

My copy of a hard days night says momo on cover and on lable.but it is stereo.
I loved the UK LPs due to the glossy covers as opposed to the 'flat' coves on the U.S. versions. Am I correct thinking the UK LPs sounded better? Something to do with the vinyl?
2 days late but anyway ! , yes the uk Lps do sound better as they were generally left alone when being cut/ the final mastering but Capitol messed around with the final master before cutting the lps so they ended up not sounding as good
Yea,Meet the Beatles is probably the only "With The.."equivalent(or close to it)worldwide that issued the mono in stereo-folddown mixes,not true mono!!I guess Capitol only received a stereo master of With The Beatles from EMI?!!!?

Got today "With the Beatles," Australian issue,very different from European ones. And Israel issued one very special.

I was going to suggest that as well! It would be great to learn about the stampers used for each release - I've heard that many were made from UK mothers shipped out to Aus.
Since you brought it up you should have taken the time to explain why the Beatles aren't spelling out Help on the cover of their album.
What does NJUV stand for? There must be a reason they did that.
They tried HELP but it just didn't look good, so they went with the random NJUV.

Is very hard for understand these variations about Beatles album and quality of sound too. I don’t know what is true or fake here,because I have my collection and know a few your differences and how was produce these albuns.
