I have been following and enjoying football (soccer) since I was a little kid and have come to the conclusion that the best player ever has been without any doubt Edson Arantes do Nascimento (PELE), his trajectory since he became brilliantly World Cup Champion in Sweden with Brazil as a 17 years old in 1958, his clean, unquestionable and unbeatable records and his fine performances outclassing other great players of his time for many years in a row have no match in history. Add to it the fact that in Pele's time, technology was not available to produce the balls, shirts, cleats and publicity players enjoy today as well as the rules to stop and punish opposition players that use dirty tactics and in some cases brutality against the most skillful players as we have today. For the last twenty years we've been spoilt by immaculate pitches, plastic balls, better refereeing and the luxury of being able to compare with yesteryear via this medium and video. Take goal number 16. Pele receives the ball in heavy ground, closed down, thirty yards out. He feints inside and in the same movement puts the ball into the puddle...yes surface water! before smashing the ball through water, so it skims across more surface water into the bottom left hand side of the keeper's view. The defender closing him down, would not have expected Pele to shoot through the water. The goal Pele scores moving the ball between feet while turning to face the goal has not been equalled by any of today's greats. The final goal in this sequence is deceptively simple except it is a straight line run. The two defenders fearing a collision are manipulated by precise pacing of the dribble. The goalkeeper, expecting either to have fouled or delayed the run, is suddenly stranded. When people look back at players like Best, Di Stefano, Puskas and Moore, they forget the level of skills required to move different equipment around under wildly variable conditions. Listen to what great players of that time say about Pele, or Garrincha or Di Stefano. THEY know how great these goals are.

In Pele's time the Brazilian League was by far the best, a League whose players won EASILY three world cups in that time(1958, 1962, 1970)

In 1986 Maradona cheated and Argentina benefited from many more days to adapt to the high altitude of Mexico City than its opponents, and also given more rest days than them. These are facts. Maradona not even selected in 1978, Pele was selected in a team that was much better than Argentina’s in 1978. In 1982 Maradona was playing for the reigning champions Argentina and still disappointed.
Brazil won 1962 with Pele injured, but haters don’t like to talk about 1966 when they were humiliated without Pele. In 1962 Brazil was helped by Pele in the first game to beat Mexico(Pele scored and assisted for Brazil to win 2-0) and they had continental advantage since they have never lost a game to European teams in a World Cup in the American continent since 1930 when they lost to Yugoslavia.(only lost by penalties to France in 1986) !!! The only South American team they faced was weak Chile...

17. In skills Pele was much better, no flaws, and his decision making far superior, full games show that, highlights are misleading. Pele was a much better athlete too and more consistent. Most experts also rate Pele as better than Maradona.

Maradona fans describe Maradona as a "god", but he had too many flaws in his game for that, Maradona was a great playmaker, but there were many others just as good, even in his era(Zico, Platini) He had great dribbling, but if one checks his solo goals or plays in his career, very few of them were in crucial parts of a game. Pele on the other hand scored and assisted when needed the most.

I have been following and enjoying football (soccer) since I was a little kid and have come to the conclusion that the best player ever has been without any doubt Edson Arantes do Nascimento (PELE), his trajectory since he became brilliantly World Cup Champion in Sweden with Brazil as a 17 years old in 1958, his clean, unquestionable and unbeatable records and his fine performances outclassing other great players of his time for many years in a row have no match in history. Connor Ledger defenders have greater technical abilities, and may possibly be stronger, however defenders from pelés are we're far more vicious. There are countless clips of Pele just being kicked around but still going. This is also a problem that Maradona had to face.

For the last twenty years we've been spoilt by immaculate pitches, plastic balls, better refereeing and the luxury of being able to compare with yesteryear via this medium and video. Take goal number 16. Pele receives the ball in heavy ground, closed down, thirty yards out. He feints inside and in the same movement puts the ball into the puddle...yes surface water! before smashing the ball through water, so it skims across more surface water into the bottom left hand side of the keeper's view. The defender closing him down, would not have expected Pele to shoot through the water. The goal Pele scores moving the ball between feet while turning to face the goal has not been equalled by any of today's greats. The final goal in this sequence is deceptively simple except it is a straight line run. The two defenders fearing a collision are manipulated by precise pacing of the dribble. The goalkeeper, expecting either to have fouled or delayed the run, is suddenly stranded. When people look back at players like Best, Di Stefano, Puskas and Moore, they forget the level of skills required to move different equipment around under wildly variable conditions. Listen to what great players of that time say about Pele, or Garrincha or Di Stefano. THEY know how great these goals are.
