You deserve a medal for your persistence! I had a persistent problem on my Polaris ATV, the engine would just cut out when I did hard right turns. Drove me mad for years… turns out it was the key ring hitting the fuel filler cap and turning the ignition key off… Dooo
I’ve seen a couple of other UA-cam videos that have the same squeak but no resolution there. So when you find the cause there’s bound to be a few people who would be grateful to understand their same problem. Well done Mike, you’re almost at the root cause. ❤
You are closing in on your target Mike 90% there, I can see you like this sort of challenge/faultfinding, drives most folk crazy! Once you can repeat it like this isolating the source of the squeak is much easier.
I am enjoying this search a lot! As the squeak is exactly the same frequency as the camshaft/injector pulley shaft rotation and not the crank, you can rule out any other rotating parts at crank speed. Not had our front end apart yet for belt change for the first time, to more fully understand the assemblies , is there any pulley, components, seals, spacers, bearings, sleeves etc that could contact a stationary component/casing if not correctly installed or worn? The squeak frequency is identified, though the white marker indicates a rotational reference point of occurence without a precise clock point for defining the offending parts contact point, I guess.
Jim's gonna winky what it....!! 😄. Looks like you're narrowing it down. Getting hotter. I'm currently in Yorkshire in a wee place called Ripon - night away for a wee break. Time for another.
It also sounds to be "external", iow not a cam bearing sort of thing. There isn't much left. But you'd think if it was valve train related it either would have bedded in, or broken. Fascinating.
Had similar noise on a 200tdi and it happened to be one of the small Iron caps on thé valves that broke and went into pièces along one lifter. Did you try with rockers and heat plugs removed just turning crank and camshaft without pushinh any valve?
I have the exact same squeaky noise on mine ,it sounds like it’s coming from the front but then when u listening from the top it’s coming from the back it’s weird ,my engine was rebuilt about 10.000 miles ago ,so I can’t wate to see what this is thanks .
Been interesting viewing Mike, I bet there has been some swearing off camera. If you were a blood hound you are really on its scent now. I look forward to the next episode 🤔
The squeak was at camshaft speed, though, not crankshaft speed. So it's every other rotation of the crank. If it was pistons or rings, it'd squeak every crankshaft rotation
Great to see you still persevering mike. Cant wait to see what it actually is. 🧐
You and me both!
it's the flux capacitor, it's came away from the do da 😅
cam wheel out of shape? bent?
Will see tomorrow
@@msmbusNo no, don't be silly, Defenders can't make 88 mph.

Winky wanky back and forward that'll surely reveal the mystery 😂😂

how long this will go - cant sleep anymore hearing this chyrping -
your persistence is outstanding
It is like one of those Ealing comedy films. The squeak.
It must be found.
I really admire your resilience.
Good stuff.
Thank you kindly
The plot thickens!
Chirpy chirpy cheep cheep 🎶
I can hardly wait for Thursday
My guess is the steel cylinder on the bronze cam follower.
Hi Mike that sound is also in time with one of the rocker arms for cylinder 2
Let's see tomorrow!
great detective work.
May I suggest valve guides and or seals... just a thought.
Cheers
Great suggestion!
You can never be described as a "quitter" Mike, you sure are going after it. I'd have given it the "Volvo tune up" a few days ago.
You're probably right!
I know this is a pain for you Mike but I’m really enjoying this problem, sorry!
Wish I was enjoying this!
Check the belt cam pulleys may be rubbing against the engine case or block i have seen those tweaked
I will have a look.

Narrowing it down bit by bit is sometimes the only way.
Must be getting close, this is getting EXCITING!!😁👍
Sounds like grinding chickens teeth or seals? No pun intended.
Is Jim the ‘winky wanky’ expert? 🙈👍🏻🙏🦘
Is it an moving valve guide in the head ?
No idea
Hunting the mysterious squeak, getting closer
See next video!

Great point!

Ripon is actually the oldest city in England.
It also sounds to be "external", iow not a cam bearing sort of thing. There isn't much left. But you'd think if it was valve train related it either would have bedded in, or broken. Fascinating.
Well it is not the rocker shaft as I have swapped them over!
Had similar noise on a 200tdi and it happened to be one of the small Iron caps on thé valves that broke and went into pièces along one lifter. Did you try with rockers and heat plugs removed just turning crank and camshaft without pushinh any valve?
We spent many hours years ago with a similar noise, turned out to be a dry pushrod top cup, so I know your frustration
Sorry to hear that

Is it the cam seal in just a little spot 🤔
What a bloody nightmare 😂
It's a Land Rover!
Could it be the pump struggling to pull fuel, partially blocked fuel filter, restriction in the fuel line or blocked vent in fuel cap?
Did the valve guides come in a little blue box mike 😉
Can it be a Valve guide ?
It didn't squeak with the belt removed did it....maybe the belt has a fault...probably not..just a thought
no 4 vale on the right side of the head closed to rad the noise is there with up and down movement of vale time 4.55 cheers jim from belfast ireland
That'd be number one cylinder if it's a valve closest to the radiator.
Valve number 4 would be for cylinder number 2.
Camshaft follower rollers?
Maybe?
It’s not that fourth valve in is it? That moves just as the squeak happens. What about a squeaking valve stem oil seal?
Anyone's guess!
Been interesting viewing Mike, I bet there has been some swearing off camera. If you were a blood hound you are really on its scent now. I look forward to the next episode 🤔
Indeed, I have said damn once or twice!
Try looking at the valve springs
Did you say in a previous video that you moved the position of the timing belt Michael, or had the belt off?
Is the lift pump still on the engine?
Nope
Camshaft retaining plate ?
Doubt it as it runs in oil
They say Yorkshiremen are so tight with their money they squeak. Maybe your wallet? Just saying like 😂 I’ll get me coat.
Shaft seal is not fitted properly and rubbing one part...?
Defective belt with a tight spot maybe?
Anyone remember the episode of Frasier, with the cricket......
Closer and closer and closer each day that squeak is a mystery ??? will Mike find it today…..
Is the cam pulley barely rubbing and acting like a bell being struck. Just a thought.
it be a pushrod guide out of place?
Mike, slacken the injector pipes off and rock the crank again, if it stops pull the injectors and test them.
As I said in the video - the injector pump is not wired up
could the piston be hitting the head gasket causing the squeek
The squeak was at camshaft speed, though, not crankshaft speed. So it's every other rotation of the crank. If it was pistons or rings, it'd squeak every crankshaft rotation
Correct!
Warped pulley???
Valve touching the piston ? Or something on top of the piston…?
Well Bugger me.
Ha no 4 rocker spring squeak going up and down 😊😅
We shall see!
Intriguing
Always do easy removable stuff like fuel pump .lift pump etc
Vacuum pump???
number 4 valve guide
You need a cunning stunt, not a stunning plan. A cunning stunt would be stunner.
So interesting … Great videos as always
Thank you!
Camshaft follower roller...
