Man this car is going to be gorgeous, not big on the "Kermit-the-frog" green but beautiful. Well done, and congratulations, I am truly envious.

The green is probably the nicest colour you can paint a performance car off that era, however it will not look good until the car is finished because it needs all the contrasting details particularly the black elements, and might even need matt sections, but in a nutshell, it cannot be judged until the end, and even then it can be tuned until it will be visually stunning.

So happy to see the Pantera's progress, Thank-you Jack!!! You seem to have assembled a very knowledgeable team to assist you, I just wish it was 30 years ago when I had both legs, no diabetic neuropathy and a back and shoulders that still worked cause, I'd have wrapped up my Westward Sockets and Spanners and flown over to give you a hand!!! Back when I was in my 30's my friends and I had grown up rebuilding engines, doing swaps and electrical harnesses (not my favourite thing either) etc. mostly on Mustangs and Camaros that were the rage at the time. We spent one summer when I was in my 20's with a sweptline Dodge pick-up from 1969 that had the venerable 225 Slant Six that we supercharged just for a lark! That truck had enough torque to actually spin the wheel inside the tire if you pinned it from a dead stop!! It was a lovely little sleeper until it got wrapped around a light standard one night. Such is life when you're young. So I'm certain I could have been a hand to help you fix the niddly little things that most guys hate to do. Great job with finding Rory, from the Vintage Wireman and the finds from Classic Alfa you've had a lot of progress since the last time the Pantera made an appearance. Now, as for joining the channel, I'm trying to figure a way to include it in my monthly budget. I live off a small medical pension so I have to watch my expenditures, but I will try to make it happen in the new year!! Take care Jack, best of luck with everything and the Dyno test!! Looking forward to the next update!! - Dave

Ford guy here, a bit of advice, take those small press caps out of the core plug package and throw them away. They're for plugging off the oil galleries and pretty everybody taps those holes for npt fittings (the push caps have been known to pop out). I didn't read all the comments so sorry if someone else already mentioned that!

A lot to unpack (forgive the pun), the build is going to be superb thats for sure.
It reminds me that myself and a friend at the age of 16 restored a 1928 dodge fast 4 tourer. Took 5 years. Learning as we went. Went to the Chrysler car club in it and a member walked over and said “the stitches in the seats are metric- so theres your first mistake”
    I never went back.
Also- bad back. Totally get it. Ive been battling Osteoporosis and arthritis since i was 30. Now 62 ive had surgery for my ankle, a hip and next year a full knee. Pain is an invasive bastard and really does affect the joy.
Lastly wiring harness. Ive got a 1979 FJ45 landcruiser completely original and despite people telling me to upgrade the harness blah blah, ive kept it stock. Laughingly its done 113,000km and is still on original condensor, coil, distributor cap etc
    Great video Jack

I keep laughing my arse off at this car. When you said you were going to the States to buy it, I posted that I was willing to bet it was an absolute lash-up with a terrible paint job - and guess what - that's EXACTLY what it was! I've seen so many cars come over from the States with absolutely dreadful work done to them. You only need to watch UA-camrs like Vice Grip Garage to see the appalling standard of work that seems to be normal.

    • @69spook

In the USA the laws are very lax on the road worthiness of old cars. Yep, Vice Grip Garage drives total wrecks across America. Job done 👍

Replacing the relays with two circuit boards must have sounded like a great idea on paper, but it's just so unnecessary. If it ain't broke, don't fix it...

I don't want to sound 'big headed' but I did say in the first video in the USA when I saw the wiring that it would be a problem. I am so glad you found the 'Vintage Wireman' to sort it out, these days Relays are generally reliable so reverting back to them makes sense. Very good progress Jack in what might have seemed a daunting task. I have some severe back issues which I wont go into but I do sympathise with you, just take your time and assess each task before you 'dive in' Jack. Thank you for the update Jack, before you know it you will be 'Cruise Ready'. 👍👍

I'm sorry number 27, but just in the first minute, your validating all my feelings towards the detomaso pantera as a whole, as I've hated the things since day 1, like I dont care if the same chassis guru who made the miura worked on this'
he made all the same mistakes and problems the miura had, just now on a budget, I do wonder if it would be possible to peel off the body and turn this into one hell of a good GT 40 replica though
also if your having trouble with your back, order in some foam matts for the house to stand on and get some pads for your knee caps and shins, it makes a hell of a difference when working, or standing in those positions
and take them with you when your shooting,
also it reduceds the chance of a slip and fall by a considerable margin
also the engine, you'll need a spacer for the carb for the modern fuel, fords are notorious for hot starting issues, where the heat of the engine causes the fuel to evaporate and one of the ways they worked around it doesnt work anymore, as the ethanol eats the fiberglass in the insulated float bowl
its why Elvis Pressley shot his
and apparently a tv because the guy from the second leslie nelson film was singing
also nice build quality at 5:48 with that left bumper, like talk about fugazi, theirs even paint damage from where it sits or its supposed to sit on the left side, meaning its probably been hit, and the lower rocket panels bent up too, also if the sump sits that low in it, put a sump guard on it
also the distributor, I believe with those you want to make sure its not using steel for the bit that slots into the camshaft, otherwise it can cut into the thing on start up
also pay rory if he's worked 4 weeks on the bloody thing prompt, jobs like those, just pay the man what he is owed
also those tail lights, given what ian tyrell said of this, make me wonder what other parts he recycled on this,

As myself, degreed in Electronics, I was a valued addition starting my Mechanics career in 1984....rewiring a car "from scratch" is immensely easy...fast forward to today's cars, it's a bit harder....but to those who don't know the likes of Kirchoffs law, it can be daunting.

When making up hydraulic lines, it's always as well to ensure that the end fixtures are on the pipe, the right way round , and in the right order before applying the flaring tool. With one end flared, a mistake can be corrected. With both done, too bad!

To bring some understanding of scale/prices. It can require $300,000 USd to fill a large yacht with diesel. Morris engines put together an engine for a client. The camshaft by itself was $2,000 USd.

  • @StevenHoman

Hello Jack, with a background in electronics and computers, I would always err on the side of electronics, except for really heavy-duty use, where relays can be fine, for the relay switching. Despite which, having seen the PCBs you had, which were constructed out of dry solder joints, either they are replaced/fixed, or a full restoration of the main harness to stock, would seem appropriate. Electricals are a matter of attitude and mind-set, really.
But hey, just think, at the end of this you will have a Pantera, which isn't something many can say. For you, Jack, have perseverance on your side.

My master cylinder is a Wilwood and all 4 rotors and brake calipers. Check with Steve Wilkinson Pantera Parts USA. Johnny Woods makes excellent patch panels for the Pantera and I used them on my 1973 Detomaso Pantera GTS. Hopefully we will have Pantera's Northwest Installing my engine spring 2025. Pantera Electronics makes a main fuse panel that does away with old fuses and uses the newer fuses.

Im going thru the same thing with a project Jaguar XJC. "It just needs final paint, its already in primer" they said. Not exactly. "Engine in pieces, but complete" they said. What about the missing rod big end cap and bearing?

And let us know how many brake and lines you flared, and then realized you forgot the connecting fittings!

I also follow "Uncle Tony's Garage" in the states, mostly a Mopar guy but will turn his hand to anything. He's been having a lot of trouble for several years now, with aftermarket cams and lifters (solid and hydraulic) for so called "flat tappet" engines like yours being out of tolerance, with lifters having no "crown" face and the cam lobes having no side to side taper. Which means the lifters and pushrods don't spin in service and the camshaft trashes itself in short order and spreads it's debris all round the motor - expensive!
Other stateside engine builders have commented on the same problem, so it's not just Tony! He hasn't specifically mentioned the make you've bought, but apparently cost or old rep is no longer a guarantee of quality! I've also personal experience with English repro engine parts being of unsatisfactory quality, straight from the box. Most notably recently, oil pumps and timing chain tensioners. It's no longer safe to assume that "new" equals "good"!
So, a word to the wise, check EVERYTHING before you put the engine together!

  • @bandidol200
    @bandidol200 4 години тому

Those engine parts seem very reasonable prices, even with the taxes added. Good job it wasn't an exotica engine you're rebuilding, just a good old yank! 😎

I've just re-watched the first video. I can't believe how bad an example this car turned out to be. A good lesson in why not to buy someone else's part finished project. Sympathies for you Jack. It all looked so promising. A lot of echoes of the Influenzo where you ended up doing much more work than it first appeared.

    Great to see progress Jack.....
I can't understand why the clutch master cylinder is on the right of the brake servo though.....?
