We should have known it. To say it better, they should've shown us that. Why hasn't there been a scene where she made her choker? Or where she she choosed her outfit for the party? Those scenes are important to better understand and SEE the transformation shes in

The dress' colour scheme is the opposite of Regina's spring fling dress as well, I liked to think that was purposeful, as she had just seen Regina unable to fit into her dress a couple scenes before. ICONIC costume design.
According to Tina Fey, the strapless party dress ensemble was supposed to look comical and tacky. Everyone was disappointed when they realized Lindsay Lohan pulled it off.
Thats really funny because by the time the movie came out that combo of black/pink was a super popular look. I graduated 8th grade around that time and a lot of girls went with that color scheme for their dresses, myself included.
I was hoping she'd talk about Cady's dress at her party vs. Regina's dress at the dance. One is primarily black with a little bit of pink, while the other is mostly pink with a little bit of black. I always thought it was meant to showcase how similar the characters actually were.
Ben Conners I was really waiting for her to talk about the homecoming costumes as cady going into prom with the mathlete jacket while all the other girls are wearing glamorous dresses is a brilliant subversion of the prom trope, also Regina being a glamorous diva while wearing a neck brace is visual comedy at its best
I also thought she'd talk about the scene where the plastics are walking down the hallway, and you get a closeup shot of Cady and you see she has a necklace with a C on it just like Regina has a necklace with an R and how she was slowly turning into a clone of Regina.
This film is so important because it depicts a reality. Not an idolization of reality, but a true reality. It yanks everyday people into a third person’s perspective and it allows them to realize what their position in society is. These kinds of films are important, especially for younger people, because they make them aware of how they actually appear through their actions. ‘Mean Girls’ highlights the concept of school being a microscopic version of society with a plethora of power-dynamics and this is emphasized, as seen in the video, by the clothing selections of each character. The mundane setting and activity of it all also gives an eerie feel to the underlying socio-political message of the film. The concept of the overbearing and suffocating power-dynamics pushing the boundaries between civilization and chaos is further emphasized during the cafeteria scene where Cady imagines herself and her classmates as wild animals as she is angered by Regina’s manipulation games. This scene, thus, ultimately states that human life is not superior to jungle life, but simply a more sophisticatedly vicious version of it. An excellent, watchable film. I agree with you 100%, it absolutely should be taught in film classes.

wow for a moment there i forgot about the 2nd one. watched it once years ago and that was the end of it. the real mean girls watched like dozens of times
I feel like one of the main reasons Mean Girls is so cherished is because of the realness. The fashion isn't over done the extras are realistic with how they dress, I wouldn't know personally, but so are The Plastics for that time. Even the hallway scene has a realness to it, with the way that the hallways aren't completely empty as the plastics waltz through, the students are busy, getting to their classes, dont make a huge deal about the fact that the popular people are walking by. MEAN GIRLS WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY OR SO HEP ME BE!
I wrote about this film for personality psychology examining the personality and growth of all the characters and got a 100. Thank you Mean Girls! Love the costumes.
I wish they talked about how Regina was no longer wearing hoops at the end scene. She was wear straight line silver earrings. And her hair was in a loose ponytail, PLUS she was just wearing a simple sweater.
Is anyone like me? I really enjoy Cady’s transformation into Plastic. That’s scene where she’s walking down the hall in the blue ruffle skirt, was so satisfying, like YES! You made it! They plastics were meant to be villains but I liked them the best! I wanted her to be Queen 👸
I *love* how all of the costumes have a backstory, even if nobody is gonna notice or care besides them. It just adds a bit of personality to the outfits. Love iT!!!
Wow I'm so delighted to hear the insight and details into the costume designing and storytelling. Its true, these outfits are iconic and myself and many others tried to emulate them (and still draw inspiration).
This video was fascinating. I remember when I first saw this movie in theaters the thing that stuck with me the most was the fashion/style and loving Cady’s transformation to plastic. The colors were so vibrant and all of the ladies were so beautiful. I swear this woman made the early 2000s look WAY better than many of the style and fashions of the time actually were. That’s not a bad thing at all, the fashion is iconic and still holds up today for the most part.
This was a great idea for a UA-cam video. The costumes were so important to the story of this movie and the costume designer really nailed every one of the costumes. It is always interesting seeing a master explain her craft.
