Thanks for your very detailed video on explaining oils. I never understood the use and now I do. I just bought a few apricot (one year old seedlings), a peach and an apple tree. Also, a new subscriber!
This is an excellent presentation. You teach the actual specifics and intricacies of the situation. We are dealing with leaf caterpillars that show up after the fruit is on the tree on several small trees.. I wonder if this oil treatment will help in that situation and keep them from attacking and defoliating in the webs they create over the branches.
Gary, your videos are excellent.. please consider a high definition 1080 resolution it would really help to see things more clearly.. I'll still watch your videos anyways...Thank You !
Thank you very much. I have many more in the planning stages. When I worked for Michigan State University Extension, I used to teach a 30 hour course on home orchard care. I plan to recreate it on you tube over time so keep watching.
Gary Heilig please keep up the videos. I’ve already binge watched all of your videos, some more than once, and picked up some valuable information I will bring over to my home orchard. I think it’s great to have informative videos on orchards that don’t take place in Southern California. Also would love to see walk throughs during or near harvest seasons, because my young orchard is not yet producing fruit & I enjoy living vicariously through others videos. Possibly even a video on nut trees, because I’m experimenting with an almond tree in zone 6A near Cincinnati. Sorry about your loss of citrus in your greenhouse & for talking your head off, but please keep up the videos. Much love from a fellow horticulturist.
Thanks for your insights. Would you suggest adding a insecticidal soap to a oil spray ? I am a landscaper primarily spraying ornamental trees and shrubs but I may have customers with vegetable gardens that could benefit from natural insecticides. Can oils be used on vegetables or are they just for woody trees ?
Greetings Gary from Nova Scotia, Canada. Just recently discovered your site and very much appreciate your straight to the point approach. Will dormant spraying help with aphid problems??
Excellent information. Thank you. Could you clarify the application of dormant oil and sulphur fungicide, as in NO mixing oil & sulphur fungicide in the spray mix?? Or is there a specified amount of time to wait to apply fungicide after a dormant oil is sprayed?
hi. beautiful video thank you. you mentioned that you can't mix dormant oil with fungicide that has sulphur ? if this is the case and I need to spray both dormant oil and copper sulphate mixed with lime (Bordeaux) which one to spray first ? and how much time between the sprays of dormant oil and the Bordeaux mixture ? thanks a lot
The dormant oil can be put on when the temps reach the 40s and no freezing temps at night. Bordeaux mixture can be applied earlier. Cherries are more like to be damaged, but if you space the sprays a week or 2 apart, you are not likely to have serious problems.
Neem is used more as an insecticide which can also have some fungicidal qualities. It is used by some organic growers as a dormant oil. Below are some other products:Monterey Horticultural Oil (previously called SAF-T-SIDE): 80% mineral oil (92% unsulfonated residue of mineral oil) For year round usage-dormant and growing season. Golden Pest Spray Oil - OMRI: 93% soybean oil. Bayer Advanced Natria™ Multi-Insect Control Concentrate - OMRI: 96% Canola OilConcentrate Worry Free® Brand Vegol™ Year-Round Pesticidal - Oil - OMRI: 96% Canola Oil. For dormant and growing season . You may have to buy them on Amazone if they are not available locally.

The videos should now be in HD, at least the ones from December 2016 on.

Good video but you don't need the music, sometimes it was hard to hear what you are saying because the music was louder than your voice.
Doesn't the oil keep the bark from breathing? Just wondering.
Oils also kill beneficial insects, though.
Very informative video, but I'm not a fan of background music. Too distracting and makes it hard to hear you at times.
Thank you
Why does the tree u were spraying have so much fungus growing on it? Is it ok? What does the presence of fungus mean? 😊
can we use urea with dormant oil?

I can't watch your videos anymore because I can't stand the 60s Disney music.
