High quality compost during the dormant season is essential in my book. Fungi is extremely active during the winter and sap production.. It would have been helpful to see some fertilization based sprays and timing for those.. Appreciate all the organic pest spray options..
Fertilizer sprays coming up soon! It’s the topic of my next podcast and video. See orchardpeople.com/podcasts for details. Thanks for the feedback and the suggestion!
Great information thankyou. I would have liked more emphasis on the guiding principles though, we seldom use copper and require approval to do so, and it can cause issues with leaf analysis thresholds as well for certifiers etc; alot of people seem to turn to spraying before fortifying their trees against disease by way of increasing soil health and nutrient availability etc .
Ana I so agree! In my orchard spraying is a last resort! First priority is keeping our trees healthy in other ways...good nutrition, correct pruning, sanitation, scouting and trapping when necessary etc. Thanks for the feedback!
QUESTION?? Our apple tree has had pest damage, from stem to stern. It's been sprayed twice and fertilized before blossoming. The tree is 20ft tall loads of sweet big apples this year, but we are still finding damage but severely less. Do you have a clue what the pest is and any suggestions? Thanks for all the vast knowledge you have shared here.
Thanks for the nice feedback! I’d need to see photos. If damage is on the trunk and branches could be apple borers! Sorry I didn’t see your comment until now!
I found a product I want to use for foliar applications, but not sure if it’s available in a small bottle. I’ll have to make my own using solution grade sulfates. AgroLiquid Micro 1000. Haven’t found another product with Mo, Co, Ni.
Hi I am in Ottawa and didn’t realize we have to spray when apples are dormant. Apple scab has developed on my Macintosh and golden delicious Apple trees. I found Safers sulphur dust. It says it can be used upto one day before harvest. Can I use it on the leaves while my tree still has fruit or wait till next autumn to use dormant spray. It’s my first year with these Apple trees as I planted them last year in fall. Please advise.
Use your spray as per the instructions. It won't fix the infected fruit but will prevent the spread. In the fall, be sure to clean up all diseased fallen fruit and leaves meticulously and get it off the site (not in the compost). That will get rid of a lot of the pathgens so you will have less of a problem next year. Next year be sure to use dormant spray correctly. You might be interested at some point in Certificate in Fruit Tree Care at Learn.OrchardPeople.com. Hope this helps!
Amazing, now I understand why the squirrel will came to playing with the apple tree flowers, they were helping the petal fall. They waiting for the yummy apple.
Serenade to reduce Fire Blight is awesome! But you have to repeat the spray if it rains. I don't mind, it's worth it, can rotate with Cease, and copper.
Should I respray after a rainstorm or wait until the next scheduled spray. Does the rain wash the spray off? Or does the spray remain effective? thanks
Yes, but what do I spray at silver tip, half green tip and at green tip and at pink tip. Not clear on those. Very confused here! The Indian channels specify quite distinctly but I don’t speak the language. I sprayed dormant oil during bud swell but that’s all I’m certain to do. Help!
Hi Judith, there’s no need to overdo the sprays! Less is better. Your focus should be on general tree health. Here’s one article to explore:orchardpeople.com/homemade-fruit-tree-fertilizer/
Hi Anthony - read all instructions very carefully? Don’t spray anything unless you know it’s needed and avoid spraying at blossom time because pollinators and beneficial insects must be protected. Why do you want to use Spinosad?
I have apple tree the tree start grow very slowly the leafs is yellow and some is green with dark ping color pls is some one advice me also the worm tree
Great video this is what we study in agriculture school how to use chemicals and kill all leaving organisms !!! I think you should change organic with conventional
It is true that conventional spraying schedules are much more aggressive! Organic requires a different approach which I teach in my IPM courses online! Thanks for watching this! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. :-)
I've had one gala and one fuji tree I planted 7 years ago and I've not had any luck. I get Cedar rust, and lose whatever apples take hold. I plan to follow the advice given here for after leaf drop and going forward. Anything else I should do? II have grass right up to the tree, should I mulch them instead ,compost or anything like that?
Hi Steve, that's great that you'll start to use organic sprays. And yes there's lots more to do to improve tree health. Do remove the grass around the tree. Each year layer around 2 inches of compost. Prune your trees annually and correctly. You can learn more by going to OrchardPeople.com and downloading my free eBook Growing fruit trees that thrive! OrchardPeople.com/thrive
What I would do is work to improve the general health of the tree with good nutrition, pruning, etc. Check out my free mini course playlist and it will explain. :-)
I have 11 different apple trees. They vary from 4-10 years old. I’ve only gotten fruit from two of the trees. One gives me about three apples a year. The other only fruited one time four years ago. None of the other trees have ever flowered. The second tree I mentioned hasn’t flowered in four years. I do not know why, I don’t know what kind of a professional to contact. No one I’ve contacted can tell me why my apple trees won’t flower. Would you know who to contact?
How sad!!! Have you ever done a soil test? If you get one done I’d like to see the results. Also what cultivars do you have and where do you live? If your trees don’t get enough chill hours or if they aren’t appropriate for your zone they won’t fruit properly.
Use Garden sulfur spray a few hours before rain to help prevent spores from sticking to leaves. Repeated applications before rain will be necessary. It’s preventative not curative.
Yes! Read this article for a similar spray that includes neem. orchardpeople.com/holistic-sprays-for-fruit-trees. You will add the neem to the sprayer last…
@@Orchardpeople thanks for your help ,will try this in the spring, I have been so discouraged fighting these black Aphids ever since buying my cherry tree's, they must of come with the trees since I have never seen black Aphids before in Northern British Columbia, and also Pear slugs came along for the ride 2 ,once again thank you
Oh that's not good! Are you sure it's fire blight? Usually you see it on the branches first. And then it moves down to the trunk and at that point your tree is toast! You might have canker on the trunk. If so, you can find some answers here: orchardpeople.com/how-are-your-cherry-trees-how-to-beat-bacterial-canker/
Very good question Maureen! Most of the products are available in Canada - just sometimes under different names. Some, like Surround (kaolin clay) are sprays that are only available to people who have a pesticide licence (ie professional growers who sell their produce). Neem oil is a bit controversial here in Canada. You can buy neem oil for cosmetic and other purposes but it's not registered as a pesticide.

I would add.. Don"t spray anything that will hurt the bees. It is better to wait until petal fall. And the bees have lost interest.

Hard to find liquid calcium now. I use dolemite lime in the Fall. It has calcium, sulfur, and magnesium
