  • Growing fruit trees can be very rewarding, but when they don’t produce fruit after waiting for 4-5 years or even longer, it can be frustrating to say the least. In this episode we will cover the 5 most common reasons your fruit trees might not be producing fruit.

    My new little Bartlett pear produced 4 fruits last year: I found out the hard way that squirrels will eat pear blossoms! This year I netted it during the bloom period and I've got about 20 pears.

      Squirrels have been our problem this year as well...They dont seem to like plums though! Cheeries, Apples, pears...all performed poorly this year on the new tree front.

    I took out an invasive tree root in my raised bed that was stealing nutrients from my cucumbers the last 2 years. When I figured out what was happening, and got rid of that root, and my cucumbers did great this year. What was happening was... a seed fell from a tree next door into my garden, and even though I kept pulling out the tree plant, the root was still under the ground, getting bigger.

    I have a 20 year old red delicious apple tree that appears healthy except that two branches on opposite sides of the tree have dried up in a matter of weeks. Tree is in a lawn area and gets regular watering. Location is Sandy Utah where we have had extended high temps this summer. I had a similar problem several years ago with a cherry tree with multiple varieties nested to it. I cut back the effected branches but the problem persisted until I just cut down the tree. Any recommendations, I really enjoy your Chanel and have learned a great deal from your vids, keep up the great work

      @pamelah6431 2 роки тому +2

      Yes, it's called Iron chlorisis, but sometimes it's not because iron isn't present, but rather your pH is too high (or low), rendering the iron unavailable for use. In that case, altering pH is the answer (when feasible), not just adding more nitrogen.

    Hi Luke - have gone through some videos and hoping you can help me. I have two pear trees started from seed in Nov 2021. They almost died last summer as containers were too small - I transplanted early fall and wasn't sure they'd survive the winter. Imagine my surprise when leaves popped out on both this spring. They are around 2 feet tall with no branches at this point. Issue is, they are very thin and after some rain this week the tops have tipped and are nearly touching the ground. No breaks, but is staking the only option here? Also, how do I encourage stem growth?

One of the peach trees still has very small green fruit that never grew. It had a few branches that did have ripe fruit but the deer got all of those. They have been fruiting for about 5 years but the apples never get bigger then a dime on either tree. I have trimmed, fertilized, and even added a crabapple tree this year to see if it was a pollination issue. They stay that size all year and then by fall both trees get diseased really bad. Think it’s time to make some wood chunks for the smoker.

Other apple trees close by of the same variety are smaller, younger and over fruit. So how do I help these older ones actually form fruit spurs? What are the stages of fruit production before you even get to blossom? I can't find this answer anywhere.

    Pruning sends hormones back down the stems and signals the tree to bear fruit. It’s so important to prune. Think of petunias. If you don’t prune them through the summer you just have leggy seed making plants. Prune throughout the summer and it sends out new shoots with flowers. Not quite the same but very very similar.

The tree, which is more like a bush, only stands mid-thigh high, if that. The leaves are very dark green but it never grows taller and rarely blooms. Here's the shocking part... It's been in the ground 10 years! 10! And has never given any fruit. I'm sure there's people reading this saying DIG IT UP! But I just had no desire to give up until last year when I started really aggressively growing things and I want every space to be working for me. I have a VERY productive Hamlin orange tree about 20' away. The Myer lemon closest to this Valencia is also a poor producer. 😔 Any advice is appreciated.

      Whole books are written on that subject. If you have a specific plant you want to prune, Google it - you'll find some things need to be pruned at specific times for good reasons. How much to take off at a time varies also. It also depends on your goal (direct shape, encourage growth, encourage flowers/ fruit, etc.) & the type of plant & where you live. :)

    • @jcuevasbustamante
      @jcuevasbustamante 2 роки тому +2

      You can try notching it. But now it's to late on the season anyway to get a lot of new growth. Next year, try making a cut right above a bud at the heigh where you want your branches. Around 1/3 of the whole trunk diameter. If the tree starts branching on its own, notching will make the bud under it grow more vigorously. You can check more about notching here on UA-cam, usually is done in other types of fruit trees, but I guess it would work just fine in mulberries as well

After a while I noticed the roots kept sending shoots up. After cutting those down multiple times, I decided to tend to one of them and allow it to grow. It grew into a nice big peach tree. The rootstock is probably not a peach. The peach was probably grafted onto another type of tree which acts as the root of the tree. Your new tree grown from the root is probably not a peach at all. It would be interesting to know what it is. Several rootstocks are used for peaches depending on your climate zone.

    Another reason why your fruit tree produces no fruit. If you use fall fertilizer on your lawn near your fruit trees, the fruit trees absorb the nitrogen and keep growing into fall without setting fruit buds. If you fertilize your lawn in the fall stay at least 15 feet away from your fruit trees and let them set proper fruit buds and enter proper dormancy in the late fall. Also apple and pear trees need a bit of boron to produce fruit. You can use one teaspoonful of old fashioned "20 mule borax" dissolved in a watering can full of water sprinkled around the base of your adult size tree once a year to provide boron. Be careful however, some fertilizers contain a bit of boron in their mix and you don't want to double up on it. Too much is poisonous to your trees (especially peach and nectarines) so don't use fertilizer containing boron and the borax together.

    Question: He said that you need multiple trees near each other for cross pollination and fruiting. But when I drive on the highway there are random apple trees all alone with no apples but are absolutely covered in apples??

    Hi, I always thought fertilizing the plant will bring more leaves, and under-fertilizing stimulates the blooms and fruiting. Is my understanding wrong?

      Yeah. You gotta fertilize it. As to how much you apply per tree, good luck. You'll never find a straight answer

    Apple tree question... would grafting a cutting from an ancient apple tree (>100 yr old, fallen and rooted decades ago, still produces massive loads of fruit... but not quite as massive as usual lately) into a young new rootstock be like "resetting" the tree's biological clock?

    • @jcuevasbustamante
      @jcuevasbustamante 2 роки тому

      It would, you should definitely try to save that tree. Do you know the name of the variety? Those older apple trees sometimes are very valuable as their variety is sometimes forgotten or thought extinct.

      I was having that problem, and wasn't sure if it was the unusually high temps or the excessive rain we got this year. Even my zucchini slowed production. I ended up adding extra calcium and fertilizer and they have started growing again. Not sure if they were stressed or what, but I'm hopeful the production will pick up! :D

    But Luke how do i determine the 20% of my tree that needs pruning?

    • @jcuevasbustamante
      @jcuevasbustamante 2 роки тому +2

      One good way to start is the triple D's. Dead, dying, diseased. Then you cut the ones that are growing straight up the branches (suckers). The ones that are crossing with each other, and those that are growing inwards (towards the trunk). If you cut up to 1/3 of the tree, it will be alright. The more you prune, the more vigorous it will come back next year. You can prune now in the fall, but it's better to prune in late winter/early spring

      You can try tying the branches down to get them to grow more horizontally, although a good angle is between 45-60 degrees. That way they will produce fruiting wood. Most apples produce fruit and flowers out of what is call spurs. You have to be careful when pruning, because they develop on last year growth

    years ago I planted a Baldwin apple. It took twelve years to produce. On another note, too much nitrogen leads to some plants to produce leaves but no fruit. Same for trees?
