What is the Best Brake Upgrade? Brake Performance Upgrades Explained!

  • Additional horsepower tends to be the most sought-after upgrade for a car. Suspension upgrades are a common modification, too. However, the fastest, best handling car still needs to stop. That's why I feel that brakes are the most important thing to upgrade on your car.
0:00 • Why Make a Video About The Best Brake Upgrade?
When modifying a car, the go-to tends to be power and maybe handling. However, brakes should not be overlooked, and in fact should be your first upgrade!
    0:46 • Brake Pads
Performance brake pads may be the first thing to come to mind when you think of improving stopping power, but should it be? The stopping distance for cars, trucks, and SUVs isn't improved as much as you may think with a set of upgraded brake pads.
    1:46 • Brake Rotors
The part that the brake pads contact is the natural next consideration, but what can a set of drilled and slotted rotors (or just one of those alterations) do for your braking performance? On their own, not much. They do look cool, though!
2:23 • Brake Calipers (Big Brake Kit)
Larger brake calipers from a big brake kit may be able to provide more clamping force to the rotor, but does that translate into a shorter stopping distance on its own? Between potential costs and low benefits on its own (without other enhancements), you may have to ask yourself "is a big brake kit worth it?"
    3:07 • ABS: Anti-Lock Braking System Units
Anti-lock brakes are a big safety improvement that dramatically improves how quickly a human driver can get a car stopped, but can it be improved further? Yes, but this improvement is prohibitively expensive, complicated, and with how advanced ABS units in modern cars are, very likely to show minimal return on investment.
    3:55 • Brake Fluid
The lifeblood of the hydraulic braking system, brake fluid stands up to heat and moves your brake pedal force to the calipers at each wheel. However, under heavy braking, heat can boil the fluid. A higher temperature brake fluid would be an upgrade, but is it your best option?
4:47 • The Best Brake Upgrade & Final Thoughts
You probably don't think of this when you think of the braking system, but it is an absolutely vital part of getting a vehicle slowed down, and has the most direct influence over this task!
There are a lot of brake components what can be upgraded, but what is the best single part to upgrade? Whether you have a sports car, truck, SUV, or crossover, getting more stopping power makes your vehicle safer.

    Completely agree here, Brake
    Fluid flush is massively
Overlooked on its service but can make a heck of a difference

Tires are everything. Big brake kits are for the track. Testing has shown that big brake kits do not make a car stop in a shorter distance. Every factory car can lock (ABS limited) up its brakes. Every car. They are all engineered that way. Big brake kits, upgraded fluids, drilled/slotted rotors are all for HEAT DISSIPATION, not stopping distances. Sports cars stop in shorter distances because of TIRES.

Since we both have 04-06 GTOs. Any plans for an Brake upgrade for yours? I’m going for Willwoods for my GTO. For Tires 🛞 I’m going with Perelli Zero plus all weather. The PS 4s are the best. But I can’t afford them right now.

I definitely want to upgrade the brakes on mine (the GTOs got some weak brakes from the factory). I have some DBA rotors on the front already and have some performance brake pads ready to install, too. I've been considering trying out some DOT 4 LV in it to test it out for a video, too.

I did the 2014 ctsv brake upgrade and it is sooooooo worth it! 6 pistons calipers up front, 4 piston calipers in the rear. But as he said, the tires are where it's at when it comes to braking. I run nitto 555 g2 and my braking distance was shortened by 21 feet from my old toyo tires

Im looking to upgrade both tires and breaks on my 05 gto this summer id be curious to hear your thoughts on that if you have any

Nice! It would definitely depend on your budget for them, but I am leaning towards getting some sort of Michelin Pilot Sport option when I get my GTO back on the road. As for brakes, I like my DBA rotors, but the pad size (and therefore calipers) seem to be the weak point on GTO brake systems (even with the upgrade the 05s got over the 04s). If I upgrade my brakes any further, a big brake kit or some sort of larger caliper swap would be my next step.
