beautiful piece. I use primarily found wood (mostly because im cheap) and love creating these kinds of pieces with the natural inclusions and highlights. I will be keeping an eye out for a log with a large void now to try something like this out myself. Thanks for he inspiration!

You know what they say. If it don't hold soup, it's art. I don't have the patience to do these types. Getting beat up for a few hours. I like watching them done in fast motion and I love the look when done. I have a lot of respect for people that can do these irregular shapes. Beautiful piece.

@@DavidBird-uu8km That is a brilliant idea, I think I will! With the right shade, this could be a very cool lamp and I could absolutely make a second and sell them as a pair. Genius.
Beautiful piece! I love the innovative way you visualize it! One question: you never end showed how you finished the bottom, how did you finish it and what type of wood was the base?
@@ofrank6551 Thanks for the positive feedback. Yes I didn't finish the base on camera, good pickup! I turned a basic footing in the base and left a big chunk which the face plate was screwed into. Then, I use a carving tool to remove that chunk and clean up the base with a power sander. Alternatively, I could have used a piece of dowel as a type of jam chunk and turned the base clean on the lathe which I sometimes also do. Will include these processes in future videos for a more comprehensive start-to-finish demonstration. Thanks for your question.
@@peterbarriscale7857 Thanks Peter, encouraged by your comment. It's possible I may have under priced this piece, always tricky predicting what they sell for.
Loved the video! I would have taken a chainsaw to that piece to give it a rounder shape before putting it on the lathe. Also loved the excel sheet at the end. 😆😆
@@ROWERIC Thanks for saying so, glad you loved it. Yes that probably would have saved a bit of time at the start, I should at least trim it down on the bandsaw at 45 degrees. Time saved more profit!
Personally I find gloves significantly affect my ability to grip the tools. This loss of touch affects my ability to use the tools ‘cleanly’ and leads to rough finishing and more sanding hours, as I have to grip the tools harder. Besides, skin heals, gloves need replacing, which is another expense (and not environmentally friendly 😝).
Nice work 😀

The lighter color of the wood, general lack of wood grain.. my guess is Hackberry.
