Tips for the scroll saw: replace the bouncy insert with something rigid, increase the speed, and check out all the different blade choices there are. Scroll saws are cool because with the right blades, you can cut holes in things with no exit. Just take the blade off, run it through a pre-drilled hole, and re-attach the blade.
yeah, blade choice is key. Many blades available. You can cut details with a jigsaw that are sketchy on a bandsaw. I use it for cutting the plexiglass/polycarbonate, less scary for your fingers. I have been watching your channel since before you talked in em 😆. So, I remember the video where the old finger kissed the bandsaw blade!
@timpickens4497 it's okay. Maybe he will get writers block one day and think...hmmm 🤔 a baby Mahi Mahi would be cool. Why didn't I think of that before? ... and secretly I will know I put it in his head 🤣
So I’m watching these videos out of order and seeing you zoom in on Chips eye while the music lyrics were saying “im goin home” brought me to tears. Mans best friend buddy, RIP Chip
Scroll saws have a learning curve. Learning blade speed and blade type for the type/grain wood you are using. I used a scroll to make my baits 20-30 years ago. Don't give up on the saw, but perhaps replace the cut ring with a metal one. Your baits rock Brother!!!!!
Your debate to cut down the bulbous tail from square to rounded gave me an idea to challenge your skills: Carve a bait that you could make a mold, carve and modify it to make another mold and then once more. Like 3 soft plastics from one chunk of wood.
Are you thinking that it'd be interesting to carve the master and then rather than retire it, craft interchangeable features to snap in and out of the body for variations in the molds? Ya know... like, to have the control vs variants for testing purposes? Because if you just put that idea in my head, i'd have to agree that it'd be a really interesting video. I love these videos, Nathan! 🤘 The two best teachers i've ever known are nature and failure, but after watching for years, i've learned a lot from you as well. I've taken notes on plenty of things from underwater physics and bouyancy to carving technique and wood working tools to soft plastics and plug in the lead pot to name a few.
@@dustinmiller2969 I was thinking of it like a Russian Nesting Doll of sorts. Start with a large carving and produce a mold before witling to something smaller and repeating the process. But I like your idea to build something modular! That'd be very fun to see. And yes, always plug in the lead pot! :D
Ryan Hall is my go-to live weather channel. Severe weather is fascinating as long as it stays away from home. If I hadn't started making baits I may have gotten into storm chasing. This bait has a forehead that looks quite carpy.
I caught my first common carp a couple weeks ago on just a small curly tail worm and really light line and I couldn’t stop laughing about it for a while!😂 I love your videos so much! Thanks for re-inspiring me to go out fishing again and to try soft plastics! I wouldn’t have had that great experience without it!
Eventhough my baitmaking have been at a stop for a year because I need a new airbrush compressor and I've got a pike fly setup last year I will never not stop watching your videos 😊
FYI, walleye have no length limit on inland waters, 15 inch minimum only applies to mississippi river pools and a few specific lakes. I still would have thrown him back because it's a bit small (which may be why you mentioned it), but just thought it was worth pointing out.
The scroll saw is a motorised version of the hand held one you use for lips'n stuff. Make a rigid blade inlay for the table, and use mainly for thin materials. You can hammer nails with a sewing machine..
I have used a scroll saw to cut a couple hundred lures, but have had opportunity to used a band saw on only a couple. Hands down!, the band sand is the much quicker and easier tool to use. Scroll saws are great for thin material when you need to cut precise detail, but not so much with 3/4 and 1 inch stock. I feel your pain!
Silly question here... is that blade upside down on the scroll saw? Shouldn't the blade pull the wood into the surface of the work surface and not away from it? Every scroll saw I've used had the teeth pulling down. But he's a master with the bandsaw so stick with it.
i own both a scrollsaw and bandsaw, the key with scrollsaws in to never use blanks where your fingers are cramped or bunched up to hold onto it.. the piece will just rock on the table due to not enough surface area.. As soon as you use larger blanks the rocking will reduce considerably to where its a minor inconvenience sometimes.. And also put the pressure plate/safety guard down on the piece until its dragging across it with some friction.. the beauty of the scrollsaw is being able to make intricate cuts without always having to back out the blade and cut in again.. you can do something like your baits in pretty much one constant movement.. Also yeah your plastic deck plate is garbage, copy it and make one out of something like a hardwood or birch ply..
Super generous guy. but yeah, I prefer my bandsaw over a scrollsaw too. I wonder if the blade would have made a difference. I find companies don't send their products with good blades generally, even on my bandsaw. Cut like butter once I replaced the one that came with it.
I have an idea you should try with your wood lures. if you use a crumpled piece of brown paper bag and rub it on the white basecoat like using sand paper it smooths out the paint for the next layers and it will give you a nicer clearcoat.
I hear ya there man but a scroll saw is one of those tools that has to be a good one or you can hurt yourself pretty good. And that one was definitely not one of the good ones.
I would suggest making you a metal plate to replace the plastic circle. I don't know much about those saws so I have no clue how they are suppose to act.
Heck yeah I watch weather events even when they aren’t nearby. It’s exciting seeing storm chasers intercept tornados. I find weather just fascinating in general. Sounds like you watch Ryan Hall Y’all.
The scroll saw can be handy, but for sure I’d prefer the band saw. I have found that if it’s grabbing and kicking the work up, I flip the blade over so it’s grabbing and pulling the work towards the table. No clue if that’s the right way to use it, but it seems to help. 😂
Some more tips for the scroll saw you should hold the wood with a firm grip against the table so it doesn’t flop around and you should buy some good quality blades and it may take a bit to break them in too.
I watch the weather events frequently but i work for a tree service that occasionally goes to other parts of the country to aid in clearing power lines to restore power
i know you make baits but what if one day you made a rod and a bait and tried to catch a fish on both? it would be pretty cool to see you make and paint a rod!
Have you tried putting the joint on the lure like the flathead catfish the on top and bottom instead of the side 🤔 wonder what the action would be like 😂😂
I have a band saw and scroll saw. To be honest, both are great to have, but neither are perfect for every job. I like scroll saw for certain things, but thickness of material really determines how it goes
Scroll saws work better on thinner pieces of wood and with different blades, really good for curves. High speed on the saw, slower push with your hands. Let the tool do the work. Wander less than a bandsaw too. Definitely a learning curve.
my ban saw had the same problems .... i cut a piece of wood and screwed it to the top of the platform to make it more rigid and put my holder down further than it needed to be to make it hold tighter and most of my problems went away !!!!!!
Pretty sure your last fish was a sauger or saugeye with the spots on the dorsal fin. Did it have a white spot on the tail? Could not tell. Fun video even when the lure bombs still doing and sometimes that’s where you learn the most!
I was watching with my kids and as soon as I saw the scroll saw I said “you’re not going to like it” and in the next clip you said “what if I don’t like it” 😂😂😂
How bad did it suck coming back from Florida? I came back from Jamaica to find we were having second winter in Maine. I hope you get the chance to get away again soon and catch something awesome!
I was thinking, what if you put a neon feather in soft plastic baits ? Maybe it would look like a neon fish spine in the bait ? I won't know unless you try and most times I catch the walleyes at late sunset and after sunset ...
Tips for the scroll saw: replace the bouncy insert with something rigid, increase the speed, and check out all the different blade choices there are. It may simply be the blade is upside down and is cutting on the up stroke. That would explain the workpiece wanting to lift.
I agree a rigid insert ideally with a slit the size of the blade
I have fish request for a bait... A baby Mahi Mahi...The paint job would be amazing!
Good luck with that man
He don’t do viewers request I’ve tried and tried and tried and he don’t do it
@timpickens4497 it's okay. Maybe he will get writers block one day and think...hmmm 🤔 a baby Mahi Mahi would be cool. Why didn't I think of that before? ... and secretly I will know I put it in his head 🤣
Soft plastic or hard bait
@@jacobsnipes8021 I think the hard bait paint scheme would be beautiful.
I'm still waiting for him to do something with the old growth redwood I sent him
(You can see he showed it in his bougie bait video)

The shear content of this channel is literally my favorite thing to watch on any platform ever. . . It’s good stuff. On to the next bait!

It's official. These videos are awesome 🤘
Love watching your vids every couple weeks!

You should make a tiger fish lure, that would be some spiffy fun facts and a cool lure

That buffalo looked like a ton of fun to catch. Massive and had great fight in him for a good while.
Love your vids and sense of humour dude.... Commenting this before this vid just cauee i know you put out bangers😆💪
Preciate you owning it. Not every bait can be the bees knees
Was the scroll saw mounted to the table? I like mine for some stuff, but wouldn't abandon your bandsaw!
The most graceful release for a pb buffalo ive ever seen.
you could try placing the cans upside down so that air doesnt get in and dry out the contents. i do that with paints etc and its been working so far
The scroll saw can be a great addition. It’s like a hammer and a driver each tool has their uses.
That buffalo was amazing. Nice catch! Also even though your bait didn't work to catch fish, it looked great. 😂
I want to try and build a bait again because of this man

I'm hooked on the channel. It's only a matter of time that I get that master class...

Sorry if this was mentioned already but is it possible to flip the blade on the scrollsaw?
Oh maybe not, looks like the teeth are cutting down
Ryan Hall y'all is the second weather dude I watch, along with Oppenheimer ranch.
@marlingbaits I had the same issue when I tried one. They are meant for this wood and artsy type projects

I only use my scroll saw for lips and props. Works great for tight turns on lexan. Wood, not so much
My man is throwing shade today lol 😂 05:50
Have you ever seen a frankenspitz lure? Might be an interesting lure to try and put your own spin on the design.

@Schmidy76 oh absolutely, I've cut myself on one before it's not fun
Nice for you to be back
what is the cost of your course I checked out the link but the price is not there?
I would love to see you make a koi fish lure.
I think you need those really thin wire looking type blades for that so you can turn easily as you're cutting.
I would suggest making you a metal plate to replace the plastic circle. I don't know much about those saws so I have no clue how they are suppose to act.
Thats one sexy shad dude. Hve literally been on the edge of my seat waiting for your next vid!🤣😂

All in on extreme weather and lure making!
What kind of wood is best for carving lures
That's the first carp of any species that I've seen caught o artificial bait. Very cool.
Wow that is an amazing bait, how many hours total do you have making baits? You must be a master by now.
Hey Nate!
Could you make an open pour mold where you could incase a rattle inside?
Ahh the sound of a German shepherd drinking and I can vision the water trail lol😂
The scroll saw is usually used for thinner fine details so useing it for fins would be ideal
Bob Saggett 😂😂😂😂 I felt that one.

Have you ever thought about rigging up some type of vibrator to use when you pour soft baits into molds.Seems like it would remove bubbles.
Do you still have the reel you made and are you going to make that ofishal?
absoloutely scrumptious looking bait
