My grandfather left me this exact truck 8 years ago. I’ve kept it running but I’d love to overhaul it. Cluster gauge doesn’t work, shifting is hard. Everything is original
The gauges, cup holders, and hvac controls are identical to my 93 T100. Reminds me of the old truck 😂. Got a 5vz waiting for my T100 when the 3vz blows again. Hoping to buy an 84 straight axle soon with the 22r. Probably going to pull the engine and rebuild it at some point. The 5vz is definitely superior to the 3vz. Much agreed with the need to be mechanically inclined to own older yotas. They last if you fix them...
Very nice. I just bought my friend's 95 for $1,500. She bought it new and has never really been off road. Her idea off off road is a dirt road. It has been in New Mexico its entire life and doesn't really even have surface rust up underneath it. Only issues are wear on the driver's side seat and some sun damage on the dash. She is selling it to me instead of trading it in on a newer truck. It's not in my garage yet but as soon as she buys her new truck she will drop it off at my house. I am very excited. I have known this truck ever since she bought it new and visited all her friends to show it off. lol I even did most of the maintenance on it up until about 10 years ago.
@@jeffdeleon3567 The 95 does not have a straight front axle. They aren't going for as much as the older ones but yea, it's still a screaming good deal. lol I do know the front cv joints and bearings etc are good on it because I put new ones on a few years ago. The boxed frames are an issue on the 95s. They tend to rust out but this one was in the desert all its life and my friend never had it in the mud. lol She wasn't even to fond of driving in the rain. It's not the most desirable year but it's stunningly clean for 25 years old.
Hi Travis, I am thinking of buying a Toyota, I was also leaning towards the 22r from 89-95. For you, why is the 3rz of the following tacomas better in reliability? do you have facebook or instagram to be able to talk
I think there is a good chance someone swapped in the full gauge cluster at some point. The top tier trim came with them, but this truck is a humble DLX model
Nice truck sounds good too I’d regear the differentials if those are 31in tires 4.37’s work good and 4.56 works real good with 33in tires also if you run a full 2.25 in exhaust it opens up the motor it’s more responsive with better mpg
I bought one from my ant it’s a 94 model and it had a blown head gasket on it with a loose timing chain witch worn a hole in the A luminal part that was holding the chain in the water park along with the oil pump together because the chain broke the plastic guides that was holding to get in place so I’m having head work done along with replacing the water pump, oil pump, timing chain, ext can’t wait to get it back
Hey man, I just recently picked one of these up for myself. Not near as good a shape that yours is in but I have a few questions that I’d like to ask if you didn’t mind?
Hi from Monterrey México. Bery impres Nice pickup. I justo have 1989 automático transmisión FEI. And olso justo have a 1990 carburador 4 spit transmisión. Bery fan to drive places never Brock 😎✌
You have a nice truck to by your description. I have two 1986 Turbo 22RTE SR5 4x4 extra cab pickups with automatic transmissions. I LOVE THE AUTOMATICS!
As I understand, the ‘82-85 Toyota truck was basically a lightweight version of the Landcruiser. I read somewhere that the Landcruiser engineers assisted in the drive train design for those years. The front end had swivel hubs and leaf suspension. I don’t think they had factory lockers but I could be wrong about that. Starting in ‘86 Toyota, at least in North America, went to independent front suspension because the market wanted a smoother ride and less of a utilitarian work vehicle, too bad for tough off-roading.
i have the exact truck and year model and my oil pressure always looks dangerously low. I got it checked out and they said that was super common for those trucks
Beautiful truck! In terms of that clock, if you haven't ordered one yet try checking out a local "pull it yourself" lot for one for a few bucks. I pulled some interior parts out of a 92 for my 93 a few years back and got that clock and a bunch of those caps for the temp sliders for about $3.
@ 6:31 yep, it’s true My father has that truck similar to yours It got stolen 3 months ago, he wouldn’t used the club even tho it was park outside our place, Truck was found a week later, they just took it for a joy ride and made a mess ( tools got stolen) The point of this comment is Yes these trucks are accessible with a Toyota key... but adding security like the club aftermarket alarm could of prevented a break in.
Awesome video! I just found one exactly like this one that’s all original with 133k miles, 22re 5 speed except mine doesn’t have the camper and it’s a 94. Previous owner was a second owner and claimed that it was never been off road. I can’t wait to Take it off roading for the first time once I change out all the fluid, do a slight lift and look for bigger tires. I’m from Hawaii and everyone here all have Toyota trucks. The older pickups and Tacomas are everywhere in this state.
Don't know if you still own this truck as I just found this video, but if you do I recommend getting an aftermarket steering wheel with a quick release hub. Makes its rather difficult to steal when you can't steer.
My favorite trucks right here! My first vehicle was my 1994 xtracab with the same drivetrain! it is all black and I still have it. I recently bought a 1993 with a 3.4l swap
Yes they are modern looks with simple drive train.. I love my 4 pickups 88.2wd first truck....all stock with factory upgrades..(going on 20yrs since owning it) 87 2wd... my complete build as a shop truck...with a 21ru engine...with lce goodies 88 2wd... completely stock..with stay that way ..keeping with stock carb 93 4wd ...my overland truck with carb engines with lce goodies..clean truck running 31s Other rides are a 89 mazda b2200..real clean mini with a lot of room in cab And a 81 ford courier..in pieces .. And my first gm vehicle is a 98 Chevy 3500 crew cab turbo diesel I’m sorry I’m a true truck guy..and last is my peterbilt 359...
Before you pull the lift off go to 9.50 tires. Have a 89 with 22re still have power and a little bit of lift and looks good. Nice truck my 89 has the same paint and strips. Tough trucks.
She sounds amazing. I do think the gauges were added. My 94 doesn't even have an odometer.Tack forget it. I am at 159,900 with the same engine. I also bought the clock on e-bay and an Alpine Stereo with Big Box speakers screwed to the back wall cab. Love these video's.
Nice truck! if you still have it and your not going to get bigger tires id go with 4.37 gearing in the diff's. Its a perfect match with 31in tires and the 22re your mpg's will go up too.
How much did you pay for such a nice example? I really want to get a truck similar and don't know the type of budget I should have to find a gem like yours

Bought a 1993 22re 4x4 xtra cab in Denver (1999) for 9k and sold it in Hawaii (2006) for 10k. Next to the 1979 20r 4x4 longbed, best truck ever.

I had a 92 4x4 with the 22R-E as well, but it was the extended cab version which came in handy. I bought it in '95 and kept it until '04 and it was my daily driver for 8 of those 9 years. It had over 200K on it when I sold it. I had to replace the rear differential in '99. It wasn't a show stopper and I drove it for a few months with it making a whining noise before replacing it. It didnt leak, it just wore out prematurely for unknown reasons. I was told back then that this is a very rare issue with these trucks. In '01 the radiator sprung a bad leaked and I replaced it that day. Also, the A/C compressor died that same year but I never replaced it.
All in all it was a good rugged little truck and never left me stranded anywhere.
