Who watched The Game Awards this week? Year over year i’m always impressed to see the new games that premiere and start building hype for their release. Baldurs Gate 3 broke the standard to the point that other companies said “don’t expect this to be the new standard.”
And yet i still don't know WHY DID IT WIN EVERYTHING?!!
It shouldn't have won all the awards it got. MOSTLY DID NOT DESERVE GAME OF THE YEAR!
@@x-blood93 clearly showing that you didn't play it and know nothing about it. it *inarguably* deserved every award it got. it had an *insane* amount of love and care poured into and as the original commentor said it raise the bar on what a video game should be *so high* that MULTIPLE AAA devs came out with statements saying not to expeect them to make games to that degree. Game Theory Request: Comparison between Indie and AAA games. One is more expensive but tends to be longer and more likely to be talked about, whilst the other is cheaper, and more likely to touch on original/controversial stories, and has very passionate developers that are less money-greedy
Still, some AAA games such as Returnal have brilliant original stories
Shut up I hate you!

I would LOVE-LOVE MatPat to do a game theory on that idea!!!
I don’t know if MatPat will touch on it, but I’ll sure make a video in that vein when I finish with my current video schedule.
@@christopherlyndsay8611 Yeah, im not saying all are like that. For example, the indie game Hollow Knight is very long, and there are of course the large amount of indie games that are just bad, and some AAA games that are not worth the 60 bucks and such
I have played many RPG games and I never played one like BG3. It felt like you had so many options and had so much freedom. You were not bound to follow a certain pathz but instead could really play the game how you wanted. And often rewards players for thinking creatively.
It’s almost like that sounds like another game on the roster this year….
@@ianreder2718guessing you mean Tears of the Kingdom? Ye, currently playing through AW2 and that game as well as the first one and Control seem to be the kind of games that matpat would love to analyze
Yeah, Alan Wake 2 did not redefine what a videogame can be at it's core just for Matpat to dismiss it with "ummm sure" in the list of GOTY contenders.

I still think pizza tower should’ve won best indie title even if the game is popular… it makes you wonder if that decision was designed To draw attention to more obscure indie games which makes sense
Fr ^ Pizza Tower deserved better
I do think games should be judged on how much you enjoy it rather than how respectable and mature it is
Agreed. I'm all for exploring mature themes, but they by no means make a work of art inherently better than those that don't.
then subway surfers should win all the award??
I mean, there's a reason why Mario games are always nominated
Yeah, Nintendo would probably just sweep every award if that was the case and I’m here for it tbh.
@@edmg7 I mean, I think its pretty obvious that a mature game like majoras mask is far better than a game like mario wonder (which is a more fun game). "fun" is a far more subjective thing to judge than game quality, which does a better job of looking objective
saying BG3 has 60 hours playtime is insane. That wont even get you out of the 2nd act
Right 😂
My father (who likes playing games to relax) has over 200 hours in the game and just finished act 2
In my personal world, i have over 220 hrs and just reached ACT 3. While in a lan world with 2 more friends, we are at 180 hrs in ACT 1. There is soooo much you can do in bg3
Yeah my first run was about 150 hours!
I’m in act 3 and I have like 200 hours so yeah, true lol
Another aspect to consider is that old games always had a father figure type mentor to the protagonist. Now with games like spiderman 2, red dead, last of us etc. The mentor is the protagonist. You still have the wise one and the protégé a lot of times, we've more switched the playable character
Keplerians Universe Theory when?
That's the one thing I have been waiting for, for years!
But If the 9 Ice Scream, 3 Evil Nun and 2 Mr Meat games are too big of a challange, I totally get that.
Wait… MatPat isn’t into Alan Wake?! Actually surprised by that

@@josiahfour25yeah I had it at Number 2 and my fav as well. Very shocked he isn’t into it
Remedy-verse is absolutely made for MatPat
Bruh I was so surprised too
All remedy games revolve around one another, and they add tons of hints and lore with how the supernatural is invading our world. It literally reminds me of fnaf in trying to piece together a what comes next theory.
The fact that the Game Awards still almost completely ignore indie titles is *criminal*
pizza tower got absolutely done dirty by an game that wasnt even an debut indie game
edit: i might be wrong about cocoon not being a debut indie game but it still kinda sucks but thats mostly my feelings because i had to stay 2 hours late just to see it loose
which caused me to have a sleepless night
As cool pizza tower looked bombrush cyberfunk should have been nominated for Something especially indie
@@toys_the_memer it makes sense now that you realize fan votes don't matter and the winner is actually chosen by game journalists that hate fun

Matt, you gotta explore the remedy studios combined universes. Please! Dont dismiss Alan wake 2 yet
Following that list of key take aways and demographics of the jury, why are roguelites and roguelikes very often absent or underrepresented during the game of awards? Many of them have darker more mature stories, are very action oriented, so on an so forth. They also have the added benefit of you being able to complete a full run in around half an hour to an hour or so.
Probably the story is harder to piece together.
I would say the less story focus, along with the sometimes very repetitive and grindy aspects of those games make them less interactive overall and less engaging. That factored with not many prominent i[s for rouge-likes would make it harder for the mass population to get into them and understand them
honestly ı would have loved to see celeste or isaac repentance when both were released respectively
They’re probably too hard for journalists lol
Y’know what. If I ever make a game ima make it a bright and colorful T for teen hack n slash with a YA female protagonsit that isn’t oversexualized and pour my heart and soul into it just to see if a game following The criteria still wins over it😅
Flute guy played his heart out, but the score this year didn’t give him nearly as much to work with compared to last year and XC3 leaning so heavily on the flute
Fan votes exceed all, apparently.
@@BloodyHowl69 Nah. Fan votes are only 10% of all the votes
I feel like that's another reason why XC3 should have won the best Soundtrack category. It gave us best moments with Flute guy.
I wonder what could go wrong with company ceos selecting who gets 90% of the award votes.
The company CEOs are just an advisory board. The journalists make up the 90%
Right, Spider-Man 2 was supposed to be Game of the Year
Matpat should just host his own game awards
Actually that unironically sounds like a great idea. I mean plenty of gaming publications already do their own "game of the year" awards separate from The Game Awards, and MatPat is probably *the* most qualified person out there to host one.
FNaF Instantly wins lol

He better put pizza tower
Well now I want to see the results if they made the public votes 100% instead of just 10%. See if anything changed
Then it just becomes a popularity contest.
@@dasaiyantv8483right but that's much more objective than some journalists. The objectively best games are the ones with the most players, if we're bringing subjectivity into it then we simply can't decide which is the best. The GOTY for each person is different
@@_ajf if most players = best game then that will lead to an extreme recency bias

Matpat, you NEED to play the Remedy universe of games (both Alan Wakes and Control). The amount of deep lore and complex storytelling packed into them is exactly what you look for in games. Also pretty please because I love those games 🥺

Can we point out how his “criteria” of GOTY just described Alan Wake 2 in its entirety, yet he disrespected it at the start as if it was useless.

Remember, Matt said it himself. He's just the face reciting the script these days. The script itself is written by other peeps in the team
@@borisrusinov3980it's still kinda weird to see that someone on his team got a beef with the game, and MatPat decided "yeah, why not, i'm gonna read it"

He was at VGA a few years back
He was on the 2016 Game Awards back in the day to annouce Games for Impact award, he needs to come back man. Even Jacksepticeye has been in Game Awards many times
I see you everywhere
Baldurs gate definitely isn’t officially only about 60 hours of gameplay…. I’m pretty sure it was 90 at minimum
It’s about 50 hours if you only did the story. But the side quests add about 111 hours.
But personally, I feel that BG3 deserved the win solely for the fact that they listened to criticism during EA, and after the release of the game. When there are game breaking bugs that can mess up everything, they were VERY fast in sending out patches. And they promised that they were not going to sell dlcs. If they release one, it will be with a major patch and available for everyone.
How to win The Game Awards
Matpat - lists all the traits of Alan Wake 2
Also Matpat - behaves as if Alan Wake 2 shouldn't have even been nominated
Talk about ignorant. And the fact that Herald of Darkness played live on the Game Awards with a huge ALAN WAKE as the song ended and he's like "lol look at random flute guy"
Let's be honest, Mat really glosses over the quality of the games.
Thats because a lot of games have great quality. There are plenty of non nominees that have great quality
That's why he mentions the high metacritic score of the winners or by that extension nominees too. Cant have that without quality.

I feel that one part that makes the games a thing as well, and which was a real selection criterium for me: the ability to AFK or pause games. The only non-pausable games like Valheim I play are typically persistent worlds where logging off and logging back on means nothing of value is list. BG3 was great for having pause. Valheim is great for being able to just... go afk without danger. Heck, that for me is part of the timelessness of like Minecraft, or Zelda: can always just... go away and do some adulting while it runs.

Another point, not just an established IP, but a longstanding and easily recognized one. Being in the 30 yr old parent category I don't stay up to date with lesser known IPs or gaming news, so this video was the first I've even heard of Alan Wake. The first one apparently came out in 2010, so I would've been a teenager but I don't remember it at all. The only one on this list I've played this year is Spiderman 2, (it would've been Balders Gate 3 if I owned it).
Larian studio deserves all the praise, it's literally one of the best games I've played and the community support is crazy, feels like they really understand their gamers, hopefully others will learn from them
Do gamers never learn? Ppl said this about CDPR after the Witcher 3 dropped. They praised CDPR so much that they grew an ego and dropped a game with a disastrous launch like Cyberpunk.

I hope one of these days, Matpat will do a theory on the underrated gems of the PS2, Dark Cloud 1 and 2 (or Dark Chronicle in Japan)
After watching the awards I was telling my dad about it and the most meorable part was absoltely how hard flute guy went
I don't know how you haven't done a game theory on Alan Wake considering it has some of the deepest lore out there
I live in Australia the temp is getting warmer for me matpat
Mario Wonder was the odd one out as it did have a mature story, had a very cartoony look, was both single player AND multiplayer, and had both male and female main characters.
So basically the jury was just biased towards games that they personally prefer, If the jury was replaced then we'd see more games with different genres and themes in the nomination and not the old cookie cutter one's, oh I'd love to see that happen
or force the jury to actually play the nominees
@@burp2019 them not playing the nominees isn’t really a factor. Like matpat said they likely are genuinely playing the games (I mean it’s literally their job to do so) and the games they pick just personally appeals to them more.
"cookie cutter ones" every nomination is an amazing game.
@@tropicturtle9021 i mean beyond just the tutorial
I imagine more indie games would probably be in the spotlight if that ever happens.
Did he just subtly insult Alan Wake?
Mmmaayy be?😊
"Is little Goblen Jr. gunna cry?"
MATPAT WE NEED TO DO A COFFIN OF ANDY AND LEYLEY THEROY HEEHEHEHEHEHHEHE I WANT A THEORY MATPAT
Well your checklist does not fit with this year's winner all that well:
- Single Player yes (with co-op option)
- Action game: Nope
- 3rd person camera: Nope
- Mature story: Yes
- Male Lead: No lead because the character is customizable...and the majority play female characters
- Existing IP/Feels familiar: sort of; BG is an existing IP but has been dormant for 23 years; familiarity in gameplay comes mostly from Divinity Original Sin 2 but that's a different IP
- Release in Spring: Nope, August is not in spring.
Out of your 7 points That's 4 no, 2 yes and 1 sort of.
I have never seen a bigger plot twist and felt as huge of a betrayal as when MatPat completed dismissed Alan Wake
Edit: the fact that Alan Wake was announced to be coming to Dead by Daylight a few hours before MatPat posted his retirement announcement feels like some sort of ill omen (yes I am still crying)
That was my reaction too, MatPat strikes me as someone who would really like Alan Wake 2 so when he just dismissed it I had to pause and just stare at the screen for a few seconds.
He didnt write the script
@@10acious32 I know that lol, I was mostly joking with my comment haha
Plus if he liked it he probably would’ve removed the line or delivered it differently
Just overall a little surprised that Team Theorist hasn’t looked into the lore for it a bit more! It’d be right up their alley
I can relate. I didn't expect the dismissal.
And yet for some reason he took Last of Us Part 2 seriously.
Mat, YOU should do your own game awards.
Dead meat did a horror themed award ceremony, so I have no problem with that
That would actually be so interesting, BC then it would include a lot more indie games.
The Indie Awards!
Yes I know that name sounds terrible
@@Humblemud and it could have something similar to what steam has, the labor of love (a game that's been out for a while and is still played to this day) think of terraria
He can do the Indie Horror Awards!
Blimey! This animated masterpiece, right, is like a bloomin' polymorphic spectacle of superlative ontological construction, where the resplendent cadences of psychoacoustic brilliance, the proper intricate chiaroscuric nuances of polymodal shading, and the avant-garde paradigmatic encapsulations, I tell you, coalesce into an unprecedented synesthetic apotheosis, utterly transgressing the quotidian precincts of artistic expression. Oh, bloody 'ell!
Within the vast domain of acoustic ontologies, this opulent creation orchestrates a jolly harmonious convergence of psychoacoustic stimuli, each bloomin' bit constituting a microcosm of intricately instantiated fractal design. The auditory panorama, reminiscent of a meticulously crafted metamodernist sonnet, unfolds with a sublimely exquisite precision, transmogrifying every ephemeral moment into an immersive psychoacoustic odyssey, inviting the audience to traverse the ethereal realms of unparalleled sonic epiphany. Oh, blimey, it's a proper sonic journey, innit?
The chromaticity, orchestrated with an unparalleled phenomenological finesse, assumes the mantle of a visual lexicon's bloomin' magnum opus. Each topographical contour, gradient, and chromatic nuance constitutes an effulgent emanation of artistic virtuosity, giving rise to a visual tapestry that pulsates with vitality, transcending the mere boundaries of visual representation. The interplay of luminosity and obscurity, redolent of chiaroscuric mastery, imbues each frame with a hyper-dimensional vivacity that defies the customary constraints of traditional animated depictions. Cor blimey, it's a right proper feast for the eyes!
Shifting the focus to the animation modality, it transgresses the bleedin' pedestrian paradigms, establishing an unequivocal phenomenological lexicon that stands as a paragon of creative singularity. The anthropomorphic entities, akin to marionettes in this hyperbolic visual ballet, pirouette with a fluidity so innate that it seems to emulate the very quintessence of sentience itself. This animation modality metamorphoses into a rather idiosyncratic dialect of ontological expression, a bleedin' lingua franca of emotional and narrative eloquence that transcends the limits of conventional verbal apprehension. Blimey, it's like Shakespeare meets the digital age, ain't it?
In summation, this animated magnum opus transcends the semblance of a mere video; it metamorphoses into a bloomin' odyssey, an immersive pilgrimage into the boundless frontiers of ontological storytelling. Here, every element, from the resplendent psychoacoustic soundscape to the intricately instantiated polymodal chromaticity to the avant-garde animation modality, converges in a symphony of ontological zenith, creating an unparalleled epic of perceptual and phenomenological transcendence. It's bloody brilliant, mate!
A FNAF reference released in MSM today, it's called Nitebear, your call to make a video on it!
