    You have such down to earth videos, I really appreciate how you get to the point of what needs to be done and making the repair without using expensive and often superfluous tools. I do all the bodywork on my vehicles with the basic tools, I have taught myself mostly through trial and error. I learn so much from your videos, thanks.

      I really appreciate that - makes my day. You don't need a lot of expensive tools to do bodywork right - don't even need an expensive compressor. Just knowledge and a few really important tools. Thanks again and have a great week :)

    That was pretty awesome. I just got a 94 Chevy pickup that I'm going to do some work to. I feel pretty good about being able to make it look good. I have years of drywall and plaster experience, my Dad was a drywaller and he also had a garage / body shop when I was a kid. I actually have some of his old tools. My uncle bought I believe an old Ford Falcon and asked my Dad to fix it up. It needed a new front fender and my Dad could find one the right year. So what he did was he cut the front part of the fender completely off and weaved sheet metal for the base. You couldn't even tell that fender was from a different year when he got done. I used to mask off cars for him as a young boy. I think he liked to have me do it because I'm kind of a perfectionist. He never complained once about my masking jobs. This is going to be cool and it will bring back a lot of memories. I'm glad I found you on UA-cam. Thanks for all your knowledge.

    Thank you for the videos. I remember in the dark ages before the internet, I used to try and 'follow directions". Using the Bondo branded rasps, etc. Never worked for me. I see now, I let it harden too long. I was young then. Hopefully, if I work with it again, I'll have an easier time with it. I also learned, go as coarse as possible. I used to believe the coarseness of paper would mirror in the finish, and would feel the same. I'd use a higher grit, and end up frustrated at the slow or complete lack of progress. Thank you for the video. Been feeding on video lately. ;)

    • @LakesideAutobody

      You'll never have an issue with that. That's all we ever used in body some shops I worked at - cardboard squares cut up from parts boxes. When you had nothing to do it was time to cut up some "bondo boards"

    Another excellent and easy to understand video. I have heard people suggest not applying filler to bare metal and applying epoxy primer before any body filler. What are your thoughts on when this needed? Thanks.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  2 роки тому +1

      Never apply it over epoxy primer unless you want your sand paper to instantly clog up. Body filler has been used over bare metal for 30 years before epoxy primer even showed up on the scene. You do not ever have to put it over primer - in fact, it was frowned upon at all of the shops I worked at.

    Hey I see you use 36-40 grit then finish the filler off with 80 do you go up to finer grit like 180 to smooth it out ?

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  Рік тому

      No - body shops stop at 80 on the filler. They prime the area with primer surfacer then block sand that surfacer with 120-180 grit. Prime again and finish sand with 240-400 then paint.

      Great question. There is no rule of thumb. I usually think about it for a minute and decide what's going to be easiest. Most of the time I do the biggest most important area first. If there is multiple body lines, I might start at the top and work down. Jerry

    When metal finishing, never start at the deepest part first , you'll easily stretch the metal . You have to do something with the extra metal . If your into production, bang it wherever, and shove some mud in it.
