Superb! A more down to earth execution compared to the superplay, but just as amazing!

+Nifty Block It doesn't actually drop frames. It's actually emulating an effect from old arcade machines when there is a lot to draw on screen. Instead of hitching and jittering at 100% speed, it slows down the game time to keep the action smooth. Which is genius until you play a game like this, where there is so much going on and the game is almost always like this.

+Trav Your player doesn't drop frames, the bullets do and it's hurting my head.
But if the difficulty level was good, why would the game even need to drop bullet frames to let you navigate?
Shouldn't it tone down the bullets a little, but keep the bullets fluid. If you can't beat that then there's no slow-down or bomb spamming that will save you then the game will force you to git gud.
'cause i've seen some vids about this and played this myself, it was an utter mess of hypermode and bombs.
but that's just how I like difficulty in shmups, when you can git gud enough that you can show off your something like xXmlg-no-death-no-bombs-pasifist-run-max-difficultyXx. And I've yet to see a no death no bombs run of this game hahaha xD

Nifty Block We don't really see too many modern shmups anymore. But the modern ones have just as many bullets and are still smooth. But the modern ones typically run on pc's. Arcade machines sadly died once consoles became popular, especially since they are a lot more powerful.
But again, its not frame drops. It's time dilation. But neither are particularly good effects, like you noticed :-)
Using a shooter as an example: if there was a lot of stuff on screen, it might drop fps. But since you aren't "usually" in danger of dying in one frame, that's considered okay. But the game designers could've easily decided to slow the entire game down for everyone until the big battle passes.
It is a technique used today, in games like EVE Online. The battles in that can range from a 20 man fight, all the way up to 3000 or more. But in exchange, the servers can force the game time to dilate down to almost 10% normal speed. It makes sure everyone has the same advantage, although it's "frustrating".
And shmups should never tone down the bullets. Tone down the graphics, or the sound, but never the bullets. It's a bullet hell game after all :-P

Nifty Block there is a reason for the slowdown. When these games were programmed onto arcade hardware over 10 years ago, the hardware actually struggled to show all the action on screen. People learnt to play the game like this so when it was ported to more powerful hardware the slowdown was recreated so it is an authentic experience the same as playing the original arcade game. I highly suspect that many super players could easily play these games without slowdown but that's how it is.
