I really like it when a "today" superstar recreates a famous solo (now 100 years old) almost note-for-note.
Thanks, Wynton. This is still terrific stuff for its age!!!

Marsalis clever musician: he appreciates great Louis. That’s moving.

OH MY GOODNESS…………Scintillating stuff. Great music and great performers.
Louis Armstrong was as special a musician as there ever was, of course.
But Wynton Marsalis is a treasure in his own right, too.
Many jazz people choose to sing the praises of trumpet virtuosos like Lee Morgan or Freddie Hubbard. And yes, they were great practitioners.
But Wynton is up there with the VERY best. At least IMHO. And he’s still around to enjoy.

This is very good, pleasing the revisionists; but Louis is a miracle, timeless, indispensable, a fountain, a blessing, a lighthouse, our pleasure and guide.

I think the band sounds pretty great! Also, what a treat to hear and see Wycliffe Gordon on sousaphone!

Chapeau! Needed very high skills to play these famous Louis Armstrong tunes as
Wynton Marsalis and his band-members are doing in this video.

He's got a lot of technique, but the spirit of the Louis Armstrong solo just isn't there.

IT's rare when you hear your favorite song, played by someone else, and you actually like it more. How great is this.

You've got to be joking. It's a not-bad copy of Armstrong's solo, but without the inspiration and lift.

      @emilianoturazzi 3 роки тому

@@kenfarmer1139 not to name the rest of the performance... think to first collective chorus in the original version... Dodds' solo...
I honestly find this kind of things pretty sad...

Some time ago but if this close to playing it straight original you might as well avoid the little extras. Louis’ inventions were pretty well perfect - certainly for PHB!

Exactamente, el solo de Johnny Dodds... Este precisamente... no... bastante... flojo. Winton queda colgado del pincel y hace malabares para compensar

Now go and listen to Louis 1927 Hot 7 for the real thing. Wynton's tribute is a good recreation ok, but I'd prefer to hear him express himself, instead of making a mere copy, which is all this is.

But damn, that's good playing. Love it.

You're wrong, it is Potato Head Blues. A bit 'strict', misses Louis' swing. The stop-time solo sounds like a good reading musician reading it. Listen to Kenny Ball's version, much better.
