I must have listened to this song a million times. Mostly Armstrong but others. Marsalis, Faddis, ect arrangements. I've played it myself. You got to know this s the truest blues a trumpeter can do. From the opening cadenza that must burst out like tears, to the spiritually draining ending with that swelling high c. This sums up sadness.
..........ending with that high Eb!.
@@robertduis6730 We are trumpet players....You can say "F" instead if you would like. Nobody is going to judge you here.
I actually like Armstrong's ending better...This ending on a high note isn't "sad" to me. Armstrong's ritardando, IMO, is much more fitting for "sadness" and the style of West End BLUES. He even smears into the last note (even at the last split second before the down beat of the last measure). Faddis does a great job on the ending here, but it's more "exciting" than anything since he takes that low F up two octaves. But to each their own....that's the great thing about jazz....we can interpret things how we wish.
Armstrong in heaven must be proud of Faddis.
I get goosebumps every time I hear this song played by anyone but especially by Louis
That trumpet was the best trumpet solo I've seen in a LONG time. I wish I could play like that.
Louis seems all the more amazing when compared to the best contemporary trumpeters around. Nobody could ever touch him. Inconceivable that anybody ever will. Nice tribute!!
nice feel. Still can't touch Louis Armstrong.
Louis is dead now we definitely have better trumpet players today. Wynton today is one of them
This is some seriously bad ass shit right here.
amazing!!!!!!!
Damn! I thought he only played like Dizzy... That s some mean Armstrong s chops🤓👏👏👏🎺
FLAWLESS
Great great stuff
I remember hearing Jon Faddis perform West End Blues at the NY Brass Conference. It was around the same era. Man that sound. It is difficult to capture the full breadth of his tone on a mic or phone speaker.
Then many years later he was playing lead with Jimmy Heath (Little Man / Big Band). It was blistering. It was astounding that he could play over the entire band effectively. No squeaks. Pure tone.
That tone is so fucking good
Carrying on the good work!
A great masterpiece!!
Similar to buddy guy playing Robert Johnson. Deserves respect but just proves Louis was an angel from heaven. Much respect, wynton.
I listened to Jon Faddis and he is a great exponent of the trumpet then I listened to Louis's 50's version. End of story Music should not be show off time look mum I'm dancing.
Great.
Not a huge Faddis fan, but DAMN!
This captures the mood of the Louis Armstrong version.
Yes and no
John Faddis = West end Blues.
The opening and closing sections are echoes of Armstrong.Great chops Jon Faddis.
Pops would have liked this, I'm sure.
You know it!
Awesome job!
Trompetista genial
Louis Armstrong is the only trumpet who can play this...
I got a feeling wynton would the first to admit it. just saying.
SELMER1947
He already has.
Nah bruh ...
Is that Jimmy Heath @2:36?
天下無敵の
ジョンファディス😆
The best solo, with all respect, is the clarinetist's. AND PLEASE WHAT"S HIS NAME?
Wynton Marsalis
Dr. Michael White. you can check out his bio via Wikipedia. He’s 69 years old and was born in New Orleans. He is also a band leader.
Where is Wynton in the video?
Who's the clarinet player?
Keitarts Dr.Michael White.
matsunaga tadanori TY. I know him.
Czemu pan ma tak mało własnych kompozycji i gra pan przede wszystkim covery ?
Faddis shows how damned HARD it still is to be play that monster cadenza. Wynton played it on Ken Burns and it was cleaner than this but you could tell he was laboring with his most full concentration to get it right.
Im Vergleich mit der Original Satchmo Aufnahme ist Winton Marsalis zu langsam und tut sich schwer den "Spannungsbogen" zu halten. Es ist halt schwer an diese Ikone der Jazzliteratur anzuschließen.
The clarinet player is almost as good as Sidney Bechet
I'm sure that's not Wynton.
That was Jon Faddis in the video playing, you can see Wynton coming back onto the stage at the very end.
Uh
Lol put it at 2x and it doesn't sound so bad...
Better to have just played Louis' recording.
NO! I`m absolutely not agreeing with Jon Faddis kitchy Version showing a slight modernistic copy of Armstrongs version 1928. Even the Intro starts Schmalzy like a kiss. Then with a circus-style cadenza of Faddis follows with a conservatory clean performance to show-off his ability to play in the stratosphere area of his trumpet. Armstrong`s masterpiece includes a lot of lyrical parts with a nice ending of his genial version. Bur not Mr. Faddis, who is one of the greatest trumpeters I ever heard, who works here on the wrong field. His top-chops makes him easy to climb musical mountains, which has nothing to do with taste, respect for the work of the real King of Jazz, Louis armstrong. Faddis` version is just corny, especially to end with a high F instead being modest to end this fine Blues by Joe Oliver, Armstrongs idol! Better listen to Westend Blues played by Joe Newman - tribute to Louis Armstrong-. Another great trumpet man from New Orleans.
I kinda agree
Compare that tone and phrasing to Louis' ! In Faddis' place, I would rush for the next carpet, hide under it, and never turn up again. And I won't speak about the clarinets. I am too merciful a person.
sorry to agree... especially the initial cadenza...
Nice but a bit too choppy. Not like Pop's
