I love these deep dives into the comic industry with a focus on specific comic lines.
Try to look up the senator from Tennesee and you will see how deep the dive is.
Not very deep, is the answer.
Yea this is my kind of content
Me too. Rob definitely knows his stuff .
I love the format for a history lesson on different comics. Very chill and informative. I legit never knew that Batman was almost canceled permanently.
Theres a lot of characters like this in fiction. Where they were almost cancelled, changed, scrapped, accidental, etc.. Its amazing what can be conjured up in the flash of a thought or split second decision.
We need more content about comic history more
@@yaqinmalul6467i agree. So much treasure in there
@@Enzo575 yeah bro👍
I dig these indepth looks on the industry just as much as I like hours long rundowns of series or characters. A lot of people forget what these characters were like when they started and how, by both planning and chance, they still survive to this day.
Definitely one of your best vids, Rob. Thanks for this. This was amazing.
Very nice Rob, I love when you go into a character’s real life history like this!
agreed i love these videos
He's my favorite superhero ever. Batman is just the epitome of Bad Arse.
Ass. Only clowns say arse my g
Preach
Do a most powerful DC characters hierarchy please. We all know Batman with prep time could beat the Presence somehow… but the rest of the list should be amazing.
I don't think I've ever been glued to one of your other stories like I was to this. These "history of" type stories are super interesting. More of these, please.
All of a sudden he goes back to his old school story telling style…..this is what I miss!!!!
He had prep time to make sure his comics would be published.
I love how it's documentary like. Your voice is really fitting for something like this
Batman is more popular than Superman.
I'm vengeance,I'm dark knight 😁.
Batmans overrated and overhyped
@@Nob911 Nope.
@@Nob911 If you don't have a pic on your account your opinions don't matter.
Batman exists because of Superman, shit every superhero exists because of Superman. End of discussion.
This was awesome. More of these please.
That was incredible Rob. Loved hearing about that and had no idea batman was close to being cancelled. The video i didn't know i needed. Thank you.
Holy crap Rob! That was amazing! I loved this video. I hope to see one on the X-Men one day. 😉
I love all you videos but my favorite is when you explain the history of something.
Agreed!
Really liked the chill, historical retelling style of this vid, man.
Plus that background beat is a banger.
"Batman isn't supposed to exist"
As long as there's a GOTHAM, then Batman will ALWAYS exist.....-_-
:P OOPS HAHA
@2:01 Batman does not "glorify" violence. It is a means to an end, nothing more than another tool in the tool box or in his case, belt. The Batman character personifies what COULD happen to us all when the Law cannot defend us or fails entirely. Criminals do not follow the law, destroy 1 in a public and brutal fashion and 1000 will never violate the law.
Books, comic books, music, video games, anime, there are tons of things that corrupt children. The only things that can prevent this corruption are government intervention, lazy parenting, and social media.
If it wasn't The seduction of the innocent, Batman would've been like the Punisher or the Thomas Wayne version...
This guy just called the civil rights movement one of America's "lowest lows." Wtf?!
Day 56 of requesting east of west explained in the most humble and respectful way 😊😊
I'd be all over his comics if he started going Punisher mode. Its never fit the tone and setting of Batman for him to refuse to kill a sex trafficker or mass murdering psycho like Joker.
More Rob-umentaries plz this was great helping my mom comic friends understand a bit of comic history
It’s crazy to think Batman at one point was losing popularity, he’s so popular now he can carry a universe by himself
Can we please get more of these they're awesome ! Can we maybe get one for Dwayne McDuffie
Why do Western heroes refrain from killing, while in other cultures, they do.?
I’m really liking this different style of video showing the history!!
Dude this historical stuff is awesome. I've never been into comics, I find the way they tell stories to be....annoying....but I love reading novels based on pivotal storylines, and the history of how these characters developed, as told in this video, are fascinating. The way huge moments in comics affected the industry and the wider environment (Death of Superman, introduction of the X-Men, stuff like that) is always interesting....more please 😁
I love that, in a sense, Daredevil saved Batman through Frank Miller.
I love hearing about the history behind comics. Hearing about why writers decide to do reboots is so cool to me.
If you are a fan of Neal Adams he actually founded an entire comic book company called Continuity Comics that ran for ten years from 1984 to 1994. My favorite character from that line of comics was Armor. He would go on to join a team of heroes composed of himself, his brother Silver Streak, and a precursor to Luther Strode called Megalith. I was pulled away from Marvel and DC for a while mostly reading Continuity Comics.
It's almost impossible for me to imagine what Batman and his public image would be if Batman kept being extremely violent and having not issue with gun. Would he be just red hood without the interesting background? hell, how the bat family would be shaped with a batman that isn't a evil alternate version but that shoots and hangs his enemies?
He’s called the Punisher. Great comic, I recommend it
I honestly like this video more than the normal comic reading videos, not that i dont like those too but my interest in comics has always been huge and learning things about beloved and even other characters is always a joy for me. Appreciate the work y'all put into this.
This was a fantastic video essay. Thanks, Rob!
Loving this video format. Well done
as a child i dislike batman alot, cuz i always think he just a guy, if u shoot him, he die. today, i think u can probably shoot him and he die
like detective skill my ass we have Martian manhunter who basically superman but can shape shift and read mind, his weakness of fire is only psychological to himself.
This is the best thing coming out of DC Rebirth
Eh, Batman's ok, but he kinda sucks ngl. Even Iron Man is more popular. Now, you want a REALLY popular DC character? Static Shock. He didn't even start as DC, and he's still their most popular character. Tbph they should do more with Static.
What? You may not like Batman or like someone else more, but claiming he's not popular is silly. I'll chalk this up as poorly worded sarcasm.
Cope
Great breakdown but by the time the Dark Knight Returns came out, and I was there at 15 years old and it was a game changer just like you said, all over the news even...Batman by this time (1938-1985) was out almost 50 years, not 3 decades.
Gotta love the change of perspective there:
1980's DC - "Bats is only moving 85 K units, we need to look at cutting him."
2020's DC - "Bats is moving 40 K units, this is the best it's been in years! We're saved!
🤦🏻♂️
Really dig this style of video.
" The Sales collapsed with 300k+" LMAO Modern comics would kill for those numbers
I love this video format plz make more content like this🙏🏼
Makes Me think of how Cartoons are changing & becoming more targeted for Adults (like "Invincible") which I'm 100% Loving! Likely Thanks to things like Rick&Morty, Family Guy & actual Anime (not crap like Pokemon/Naruto) becoming more mainstream especially since the Lockdowns.
I grew up on ones like Dragon Ball, Spirited Away, X-Men Evolution, Ren&Stimpy & Courage the Cowardly Dog which at least 2 of are Messed Up imo but All cartoons where for Kids in the 90's & 00's apparently.🐲🦄
THIIIS VIDEEEO WAS SO GOOODDD...the story, the visuals, the actual tv show reference ...loved it
Imagine if The Shadow didn't exist... then what would happen with Batman?
_The Shadow knows..._ 😁
@@danielseelye6005 ...what evil lies in the hearts of man.
Rob This Was AWESOME!!!
CAN WE PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE GET MORE VIDEO ESSAYS ABOUT CHARACTERS OR WRITERS!!!!?????!?!?!?
So they took batman from killing bad guys like what needs to be done and turned him into a guy that finds young boys, brings them home, trains them and puts them in tights. Let's Go back to what he was originally please
I wonder who DC's mascot would be without Batman!
He's over rated & his Superpower is being an Ultra Rich Ninja & having God Level Plot Armour. except the Legend Adam West.
& How does Superman get called the Boyscout but Batman's always prepared?
Rob got that OG comic explained vibe going love it brother 🙌
I think this may actually be from that Era
Batman was neutered long before 1954. He stopped killing and maiming by 1940. The late fifties early 1960s iswhen Batman was in trouble of being cancelled. There was no Fox network in the 1960s. The 1966 show did save the the series.
Batman is awesome and so are his bat-mobiles. I have over 110 die-cast models of different model batmobiles, plane/wing, bike, helicopter, tank, boat, even a rail car, I've even multiples of some models in different scales, 1:64, 1:43, 1:24, 1:18. I think the animated series batmobile is the nicest, although the 89, tumbler and arkham knight ones are awesome too. Ive a few different lights that shine the bat signal and a desk lamp of the 89 plane, I have it mounted on top of a shelving unit shining up the way, so it looks like that iconic scene of the moon shot. I've batarangs, light up symbols, why have I all this and more? cause he's BATMAN!!!
Thats was a good listen, please do more.
I hated "Crisis". So did everyone I knew at the time who had read comics for years.
Batman derives much of its noir setting from The Shadow, Black Bat and The Spider. If you read the pulps, they are as gritty as they are fantastic in scope.
I think Batman would work even better as a toned oversized black and white modern pulp with minimal dialog. There's too much explaining in issues that create continuity gaps, which also was a problem with Doc Savage, but not The Shadow. Kent Allard was a very, very broken man when he became The Shadow and borrowed Lamont Cranston's identity.
FOR JEDI ACOLYTE 26:
ROB JEFFERSON, HEAR OUR CRY CHARACTER EXPLAINED/ MAMMOTH MOGUL(ARCHIE), DURGE(STAR WARS), ENERJAK(ARCHIE)
"Vigilantiism cannot be glorified", did they just never plan to do any super hero comics? Because they are literally ALL vigilantes.
Edit: "Vigilantism is the act of preventing, investigating and punishing perceived offenses and crimes without legal authority. "
You should have your own History Channel program doing these bro, fantastic!!
I believe you said that Batman was broadcast on the Fox Network, Fox Network did not exist until the '80's, some twenty years after Batman aired in 1966. The show was on ABC.
I feel loke Christopher Reeves injury played a major role as well. Superman's momentum was derailed bcuz of it. Allowing the focus to shift to batman and others.
Damn, first I saw comicstorian's video "The problem with injustice" and now this what is happening with our comic nerd community out there bro😅😬😬.
In addition to Batman’s behind-the-scenes history in this video, The Adventures of Superman radio did feature Batman and Robin on occasion. Batman had the 1943 serial movie, in addition to the comic books, never had a radio show.

Batman, isn't just more popular than superman, Batman is THE CHARACTER in the whole both DC and MCU.
Ra's Al Ghul's name should be pronounced "Raysh" to mean "head of the demon"... apparently if you pronounce is Raz it means "feather of the demon"
But I don't have to tell a comic expert like you that right? I mean you would never mispronounce his name.
It’s crazy that Batman isn’t supposed to exist but look at how iconic and legendary he is today lots of crazy things happened. Just like it’s so hard to believe that Disney at one point was just someone’s last name. But now when you hear Disney think of Mickey Mouse Donald Duck goofy Disney world marvel and so on.
Too bad Frank Miller ended up being bat-shit-crazy-man. The dark knight returns was truly great, but so much of what he made after was just embarrassing.
Okay… assuming that Batman actually did kill joker and it wasn’t a suicide….. why do we have to have a giant manhunt for a person they’ve never been able to find anyways, wasting half the budget for a manhunt with no hope of success against the guy who who killed one of the most “evil” people in the world…. That’s a tough reelection for the mayor
Great vid as always Rob. He's not a hero, he's silent gardian, a watchful prtector. The Darkknight,
One detail missing from this video is that Batman was under cancelation well before the show and carmine Infantino was put in charge as editor of batman. He started a run that aged up Robin and got rid of that silly sci-fi camp and he also rereigned batman into what Adams would later draw with the yellow symbol. Without his contribution, the comics wouldn't have sold enough to inspire the show and would've been canceled no O'neal/Adams run no 66 show, no Batman.
OF COURSE they were from Tennessee-- Gawd. Damnit. XD
Yo Rob ya gotta do more comic history dives like this! I love the in story history events, but this whole real world publication history dives on characters is 🔥
Should do Deadpool next. Just saying.
Yeah that guy wrote that book DID screw things up and was your basic 'bad science' stupidity. Humorously though it much of what the guy went on about was justified decades later even with it's terrible origins based in corrupt intent. 🤣
This video reminded me of “Marvel Explained” OG’s will know what I mean
I do not like Batman and i never will, i have tried but it does not work and i think i figured it out, Rambo, yes not from the first Blood movie but all the rest. If Batman is a regular guy with money, fine. i just think him going thru all those things and never losing is crap and silly but what if, this is my solution, Batman was a guy that worked the job until he quit or died, another gets picked by a secret person (Alfred) maybe once in a while, to keep things fresh. that would be fun.
3:59 I get what you were saying BUT it'd be real easy to take 'they also saw the lowest lows, with the civil rights movement' out of context. That phrasing hit my ear like 'What the fuck did he just say?' before you finished the sentence.
Hey, old Robs voice is back. Cool, cool. This is how you narrated videos when you 1st started also when I was severely addicted to heroin and was in a constant state of withdrawal and...not. awful terrible time, and these videos were one of the few things I remember providing me with any semblance of sanity. That being said, I love the new robs voice, where your enthusiastic about what your reading, garralous and the love for what you do shines through.
lol comic books corrupting kids
I hate that narrative, I had to grow up with adults thinking I was some sort of psycho because I played video games.
If Batman got cancelled, 2/3rds of their slate should have been cancelled as well. Batman was the only franchise besides Superman that could hold 2 ongoing titles on a monthly basis.
God dammit do you mean to tell me I have to watch DC videos to get Robs old video style? Welp. Here we are now I guess.
Also, does anyone have the Song ID? It's driving me nuts
Wow this felt so different to anything I've seen from this channel.
Still amazing content. Just . . . Different somehow
Man, lemme tell ya somethin...this was great! It reminds me of your older videos on the channel from a few years back with the calm tone of your voice but im always expecting hype rob to make an appearance 😂
The merged earth was a bad idea. Today it's a total mess.
Batman was saved by Tim Burton and Paul Dini. The 1990' cartoon was a real blast.
Brightburn Request👿Beyond Omega Level: Kulan Gath!
My friends and I always meet up and say Rob quotes like "Man lemme tell u something man!"
Honestly I still like Supes better since I like what he embodies better - but I can't deny I grew up with Batman so I'm glad he didn't get canceled
I like these documentary type of videos like History of The Marvel Universe.
I'm curious about even earlier comics, like the "penny dreadful" era, are there any classic hero comics from back then?
It's ironic that what made the comics tank with fans is also what boosted its popularity in the show
Gotta love the ministry of truth trying to regulate mundane things like comic books in the name of the children
Do The New 52: Futures End with Batman Beyond and evil Superman 🦾
Yes rob this is a good style of video. Your straight up gving me Kyle Hill the Science Thor/Jesus vibes rn
Batman may be popular but every time he’s animated, they don’t do him justice, his story is full of darkness and hardships yet they tone it down a lot, Look at CW arrow his show, it shows what they can do with a Batman show almost
Rob these types of videos rock.
Would love to see your take an explanation on a deeper dive of the CBA. You are comics explained after all.
How is the civil rights movement a 'low' in America? It was like 1 of 6 good things America did?!
Lol I love seeing people from the 1900’s stupid quotes really reminds me that even though someone might think their hot shit once their dead 100 years later people will laugh at them 😂
We’ve all know Batman was more popular than Superman. The real question is he more popular than Spiderman?
Super interesting. Batman IS the guy for the past couple of decades. Kids in my fam/hood have told me Superman does not interest them.
Hey Rob, can you explain:
Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie Comics)
