One thing to mention is informing your employer about your intent to commute by bike to work. My past jobs have been very welcome to the idea. They provided a safe place to store my bike, plus if I arrive a little late to work or need time to change or maybe even leave early to avoid some bad weather coming in they always been supportive.
. . . . and priority Number One is missing - wear a helmet!! I'm 3 weeks after a crash on my bike, landed head first, two days in hospital from the head injury followed by headaches and a bit of work adjustment required but the neuro specialist stated quite confidently - I would be dead if I was not wearing the helmet. Always wear a helmet, that is your biggest, and least forgiving, mistake you can ever make.
Lots of great advice here. I've been commuting almost every day for 3 years and I've made all of these mistakes.
Long ago, I calculated that my commute to university would take 15 minutes, so I always started 15 minutes before I had to be there. Did I mention that I based my calculation on an average speed of 40 km/h, and no red lights? No good idea, I gradually went slower and slower for some reason, not to mention that dangerous incidents happened way too often...
10 - I was always ready
9 - I'm still chasing KOMs (a good Idea to do that on the way back home) I have quiet roads,
8 - proper clothes for 20 km commute one way :D
7 - I did that
6 - jup
4 - oooo yeas, that's a bad one :).
3 - not needed if you want a reason to buy a new bike :)
2 - good one. Nothing worst than having to go back home, outside it's a little bit cold or really cold and the cloths are still wet.
Other mistakes:
1 - postponing to commute by bike. Take the decision and do it. Don't ask yourself always, should I?
2 - not getting everything ready in the evening for the morging.
2 - being afraid to commute by bike
Just do it, you'll gain fitness, save money (if not starting buying exotic bikes), it's fun, easy to try new routes, you'll fail sometimes. You'll learn what's working for your special case.
If it's hard, you're on the good path.
Thanks for sharing this information.
Don't ride close to kerb when it's windy too, learned that the hard way
This is a good one!!
Carry a spare battery bank to plug phone and or USB front light. Of course make sure the battery bank is fully charged.
It doesn’t matter if I’m sweaty as this is my warm up before 10 hours of dancing then commute home all by bike
Pleasant surprise to see Wells!
In Holland mist of the people go to work Sith a normal bike Sith internal gears and a closed Chain system. Also we put om tires with protective material in it. No punctures at all.
For example last year i had zero punctures and lube my chain once in 5000 km of commuting
Totally agree - the ideal commuter bike is low maintenance.
Mine has hub gears, a belt drive, hydraulic discs, puncture resistant tyres and mudguards. The only day-to-day maintenance it needs is an occasional wash.
I rode schwalbe Durano DD’s for a couple of years, about 24000kms and only 2 punctures. Changed them for continental Grand Prix 5000’s and got a slice right across the rear tyre ... they lasted 5.9kms. Boy was I pissed. Luckily it happened right outside a bike shop so I was able to buy a new tyre.
#11: Commuting by bike in summer in the American South.
True that. 900 percent humidity and 100 degrees. Every time I experience that oppressive heat makes me appreciate snow but mild summers.
Am I the only one frightened by the u-lock mounted on the front fork?
The frame's too small to fit it inside the triangle. My daughter has the same lock and the same problem.
Where he has mounted it the tyre will prevent it jamming the spokes if it gets knocked sideways so it's fine.
Nope you are not the only one. Kryptonite makes a special holder that mounts on the handlebar which would be much safer.
Nice one..
3:44 blurs closest car, proceeds to reveal every other car
TBH, I gave up on USB rechargable lights and went back to battery powered ones. One less job to do everyday. I have a spare rear light and my front light gives me plenty of warning before a change is needed. (I do use rechargable batteries but they hardly ever need recharging compared to USB lights.)
I thought I was watching the fast show “cyclings brilliant “ 🤣🤣🤣
On my commute to work with a mountain bike, I had only 8 thorns in my front wheel. The patching kit helped, but I was late for work. Roadworks can also cause slowing down a lot, as well as cars in traffic that do not give enough space to pass. Chain coming off is also not nice.
I had the back luck of being behind a funeral process in a long straight road. All cars had their hazards on. It was impossible to see when a car wants to turn left into the graveyard.
Having a reflective belt or something reflective around the ankles helps to be seen. My bicycles normally have three lights in front and at least two at the back.
How about wearing a helmet as number one?
It's not just about having an accident.
I've ridden past trees and had objects hit my helmet and / or visor.
which prevented a nasty injury.
Would not wearing a helmet not be No.1?🤨
Good video, good tips
I race everyone on my 20mi commute. 20mi commutes make you strong. No one can contend. My bikes a Surly Krampus, I pass road bikes. Years in still never been passed. :D hahahahaha I dont even know why I do it, its just fun to screw with people, especcccialllly roadies with all the gear and not a clue!!
You sound like the coolest person in the world 👍
You sound like a right twat.
(Make your selection from the above, dear viewer) 😉
Wow, you should turn pro, you sound like you're the best cyclist who ever lived
Why did the Mexican throw his wife off a cliff?
Tequila.
There I've made your shit comment 1000 times better. You're welcome.
@@dh7314 no he sounds like a knob !
Wear a helmet. It could be the difference between a minor concussion and permanent brain damage. Maybe even death. Not wearing one really isn’t worth taking the risk.
Why race when you can get there in peace
Number 11 - you should avoid riding on public footpaths in front of cathedrals 😊
Always take in the scenery
Litchfield Cathedral is definitely worth a visit
Mistake 1, that slanty rack!
Mistake no.1- not wearing a helmet
Too obvious!
Not advocating wearing a helmet is irresponsible. Sure, the ignorant and deluded amongst us will choose not to protect themselves from accidental knocks that could cause brain damage. But, in presenting tips, the bleedingly obvious safety tip is a glaring omission
ALWAYS wear HELMET !!!!!!
Yes! Im surprised that among all those tips there was no word about helmet... 👎
@@Jelitek13 And even the presenter doesn't wear
This should be the top comment or pinned
Bore off. Anyone wanking on about hemets is obviously a rookie. The debate is old and pointless.
@@jonmathias6159 tell this to the patients I had with brain hematoma after they hit the curb.
Why should anyone take tips from someone who doesn't wear a helmet? Shite ..
Install fenders on your bike and wear a helmet!
Always the same reports.......no imagination
Remember to pack your sense of self entitlement. No one wants to impede your commute so ensure you take up enough road to hold up unworthy traffic. As clearly the coolest owner of the road, throw your bile at passing cars, pedestrians and onlookers as we admire your prowess at mastering gyroscopic physics. You truly have earned it and thoroughly deserve it.
