this is why I like rick.. hes not just some old dude that riffs on old music and hates on newer artists. He recognizes talent and respects the progression of music
100% game recognizes game.
Oh he occasionally gets grumpy but he comes around to new ideas pretty quickly if they arent total trash.
Indeed
for real! I can't wait for him to discover Gran Hechicero thats gunna be hilarious!
Man, he aint THAT old!!!
Tim was super great to work with when we were designing his studio. Humble, creative and down to earth. We were honored to be a part of the project and excited to hear all of the amazing music that is born in that space.
18:41 🍻
Hell yeah, man! Congrats. Someone posted a picture of notes Indonesian workers wrote to each other inside a guitar cavity. It made me think about how many human hands contribute to "one person's" work. Glad you got a shout-out in vid. Tim is a real professional.
I'm just surprised to learn that the creator of The Muppets has his own guitar line! I didn't even know he played the guitar! Maybe Animal taught him, or vice versa.... 😁
You guys did a great job imo. Looks like a great space to work and live in hehe.
@@HighlanderNorth1 Unless I’m missing the joke, that would be Jim Henson
One of the best things about playing guitar is discovering new players that you can learn something from. I've been playing for over 20 years, and the best advice I think I could ever give any young players reading this is to never worry or think about how good you are compared to other players. Have fun with it. Get creative. Don't worry so much about speed. Think about melody, and let speed compliment it. You do not have to be blazing fast to be considered good. Be as good as YOU can be. Play things YOU love. Trust me.
Damn Straight!
Amen brotha!
The aliens are watching, and reporting to the ghost 👻 lmao
🙌👏👏👏
Cool! Dope advice
This is the kind of super nerdy and detailed interview that we as a society need more of. Tim is a genius.
He sure is , had a massive impact with muppets as well
love the fact that Tim says he's scared of the dark and Rick just laughs in his face
Funny cause he looks like he came from the dark!
I would too if an adult said that to me.
Indicative of the generation.
What a loveable fact
@@DuxJerome If Tim Henson looks like he comes from the dark, you clearly grew up on a unicorn island with talking bunnies and birds singing you 'What a wonderful day'. Yes, he has tatoos, but he still looks like boy scout, eager to earn his family merit badge.
LOVE that Rick sits and listens allowing his guest to talk. So many "hosts" dominate interviews. We can hear from them anytime. We want to hear what the guest has to say. THANK YOU RICK. Tim is an amazing musician and interesting guy.
He's the antimatter version of Howard Stern. Knowledgeable in the music industry, but socially the complete opposite.
Tim seems like a REALLY nice guy. I checked out the guitar, and was surprised to find it was pretty darn affordable! I'd love to try it out. It seems like a guitar that could actually change how you play. Something I've never really seen.
I missed the exact name of the one he's now settled on?
@@MisterBoy316 TOD10
I've expected the price to be at least double of that.
The price is a banger and the fact that it sounds awesome and he plays it himself is great
@@ianyoon2277 the tod10 I'm seeing £1500, the tod10N under half that. I think it's the N in this video, but I need to go read up on them. 600 strikes me as barely above entry level prices, wow
I love that people like Tim Henson are around to show us that, just when you thought you've heard everything that was possible with guitar, there is someone there to reinvent and to take it to another level.
Agree.
Robin Guthrie with Cocteau Twins did something quite unique also.
@@JeffMccombe-yd3tuAsato is quite unique too...
Tim's signature guitars have been pinned at #1 and #2 on Sweetwater for weeks now as Sweetwater's best selling items. This Nylon model is #1.
His family made the muppets
Yes, he does look like a muppet.
I´m not suprised, since there arent many options besides the classical guitar if you want a nylon string. I have one on preorder too 😁
How is this better than a Godin?
@@dreamofmirrors its cheap and its tim's guitar
I really appreciate how ultra respectful Tim is while talking to Rick while also thanking the guitarists before him for their inspiration in learning his craft. He seems very humble which is awesome. Great interview!
He’s super humble for being ridiculously good as he is.
Every interview I see of Tim I am so impressed. What a great guitarist and an all around class act dude.
Rick is my all time favorite interviewer of guitarists. He’s humble, respectful and genuinely interested in his guests. Well done. 🍻
He exactly know when to speak, interrupt, how much time for a question and exact follow ups
You can tell over the last year that Tim's grown a lot more comfortable in front of the camera. A lot of people seemed off put by his demeanor in the last one, but to me it just struck me as nerves. Now it's like he's completely at home. We've literally watched him grow up, so it's necessary to take that into account.
Agreed, he always came across as smug before. Hopefully this is a positive sign :)
Agree!
@@lemonlateralus I think the smugness was always a bit that he was doing, but thankfully I believe he's grown out of that lmao
Was such a warm, forthcoming conversation.
@@lemonlateralus I think likely what came off as smugness before was 1. Nervousness/insecurity and 2. Being really young and thrust into having a pretty significant public profile
Fun fact: I learned of Tim Henson from your channel and I have listened to Polyphia pretty much daily ever since.
Yes, same here. What a great band!
Fun fact, that's embarrassing to admit considering you're being recommended music culture videos on your algorithm yet only know about the most virtuosic band 10 years after they popped off
@@EnvisionedBlindness how is that embarrassing? It's not that serious. Lol
me too 🙂
@@EnvisionedBlindness what happened to you as a child? Let’s start over. Don’t be this dude. No one likes this dude. I’m sure the Polyphia boys appreciate my money as much as yours. Go take a nap.
It's so nice to see a young man this talented and successful be so down to earth and humble.
Great video but does anyone else appreciate the production quality that went into this? The lighting, the camera angles and focal lengths, the clean audio, the background, the editing cuts. REALLY good work on that front. Keep it up!
With such a simple video, this editing quality is likely lost on so many.
Polyphia is not the sort of music i usually listen to but i just respect them so damn much i cant help but put them on sometimes and just sit there in awe
I agree. Just goes to show quality musicianship is in every genre of music!
Same here. I have huge respect for every single member in Polyphia.
+1 👍🏻
Understandable, luckily i f*cking love their music and can vibe to it all day
I'll be honest, I listen to it and it sounds pointless. Like someone threw up a bunch of musical notes and it just splattered all over the floor. It's just not very musical. The technique and speed they use is impressive though.
Man, Tim is a really surprising guy. He seems to be growing as an artist and person yet remains humble, open and driven.
And the camaraderie is incredible, reminds me of the days when Rhett would tend to hangout. One can see a deep friendship, these conversations could not happen otherwise.
Tim is making history and enjoying the process. Sure is inspiring, though I'll say his music comes from areas way outside of my comfort zone but like LoI Armstrong said, there's two types of music: good and bad. Well Tim is certainly entrenched in the first category.
Rhett still hangs out. They’re on each others channels a decent amount.
Humble? Really?
He just went "I want you to make me this guitar, or else I'll make it somewhere else" on Ibanez's ass, and I'm still dumbfounded how the japanese complied, I guess money talks.
@@JohnWiku I see nothing wrong with that. Ibanez had already closed that door; that sounds more like a negotiation backed by determination rather than mere ego. Ibanez is a huge beast if he tiptoed they would have ignored him. At least to me it sounds like an artist asking for a brush saying that it would be great to be able to buy them there rather than having to look for it, after all they used to make it. But to fulfill it's patrons that brush was absolutely required and would go where needed should they were not in a position to fulfill the request.
After all, one of the biggest differences I see between professionals and amateurs is the stakes. Your bank account is separate from your audience and being unable to fulfill their requests doesn't put ones own livelihood at risk.
He's seems like a great kid. It's just another thing I admire about him. He mentioned Vulfpeck. Polyphia and Vulfpeck are two great examples of how hard work and drive will pay off.
its great to see Tim getting more comfortable in interviews. i remember rewatching when he was on Herman Li's Jason Becker charity stream and he was sort of playing a lot while he was talking and stuttering quite a lot so seeing him now where he's really confident in what he says and seeming like he's just having any other conversation is rly nice to see :)
Musicians LOVE talking about their gear, it's their comfort zone. Rick is a genius to adopt this format / niche of interviews
Tim has a ton of humility, which shows how intelligent as a human being he is, incredible seeing him describe the whole creative process and trial-error involved in it.
These two have such a great relationship; it's inspiring. And fun to watch. Maybe 30-40 years apart yet they connect so deeply.
It's a deep respect for each bring to the table. It is joy to watch.
Yeah, the great thing is that they are generationally apart, but Rick respects newer generation talent and Tim respects what the older generation brought. They speak a common musical language and they both get production so it's another layer of mutual appreciation.
It's the boomer bends that binds them.
@@rookiebeotch 💗
What a delightful young man. Humble and well spoken. Thought he was more of a diva. Great interview
This was the most sincere and thoughtful interview from Tim yet and I loved it. Great stuff, guys.
I like that Tim is maturing and putting behind the fictional persona from earlier phase of his career. Some artists never grow out of that fake persona in front of the public, and not that there's anything wrong with it, since they have their reasons for keeping it going (privacy, separating their public facing life from personal life, social anxiety, marketing gimmick, etc.) But this Tim is much more relatable and personable.
They used it to generate controversy when they were doing their rap album and it worked, they’re so famous now they don’t really need it tbh
Absolutely changing my mind about him, the "fictional persona" was so off-putting that I literally refused to listen to his music before ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
We’ll tbh it’s not like their in it for clout. Their just a bunch dudes being dudes. I love that they don’t give af
He was like 12 years old. Lol. Shame on him for not having an astounding depth of character. Smh
@@1pchamp284 lol, no, if you are dude being a dude, you just sit in the basement and maybe perfect your craft. I actually know an incredibly talented musician like that. No social media, no nothing. Teaches and plays, thats it. You have to have some drive in order to become famous, be it a clout, ego, or whatever. He is clearly maturing and is finally getting comfortable with his success. If you listen to the interview you'll hear that when they were starting out they really did give af ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
1:05:59 I love how both Rick and Tim close this fantastic meetup! Rick giving Tim the credit for the innovator that he is and Tim acknowledging the greats of the past, present, and future, beautiful stuff.
The gratitude I feel for Rick creating this space for a really talented, diamond quality artist to be able to share their artistic journey with us, as it happens, in real time is immense. ❤️ Thank you, Rick.
Your genuine interest, respect and admiration for this young artist's work is
such a precious gift in so many ways.
Thank you for reppin' the old folks with such class!
Chef's kiss to this!
seriously, mad ups to rick. its refreshing to watch an interview that doesnt interupt EVERY time someones talking for more than 10 seconds
I have to say incredibly impressed with Tim's perspective and understanding. For someone not yet 30 he shows a real deep respect for the art and the arena he is in. You don't see enough of that these days. Rare to see humility, passion and clear empathy in someone. Good on ya Tim glad to be around to listen to your adventures in sound.
Could you imagine letting Hendrix talk about his guitar style for an hour back in the late 60’s? That’s the blessed era we live in
Comparing this guy? With Hendrix, you ever actually heard Hendrix,he had songs, musical talent
@@65Lynchy he’s not comparing.he’s stating that what an opportunity it would have been to have this type of discourse with Hendrix.
@@65Lynchy hendrix pushed boundaries, polyphia is pushing boundaries, both are/were geniuses in their time
@@andreaslion5877 pushin boundaries is not the only thing hendrix did, he had songs and insane live improv (listen do the deluxe band of gypsies, even Miles Davis was shocked)
@@andreaslion5877 Except Hendrix was more than another freak on guitar. Dude wrote songs that are still around. I'd be surprised if anyone but Henson fanboys still listen to em in 10 yrs.
I’m really enjoying these long format interviews, super glad that you’re channel is growing in opportunities. Your passion for music is fun to follow along with, and I always learn a little something along the way. Great experience.
Tim doesn't appear to have the ego that a lot of young-ish musicians have. He comes across as being just so genuine. I am an old guy but i really like this young man. I also think he so appreciates Rick's experience in the industry and the knowledge he brings to the conversation. Of course, Rick is the spark that ignites a great interview. Totally enjoyed this chat.
It really makes me appreciate his talent even more.
All of the band comes across this way. They’re all insanely talented musicians, but in interviews they feel so humble and down to earth.
I'm getting up there in age, turned 40 this year, and I have to say was looking for YEARS to hear someone from the new generation to really take the guitar and show us old guys what we forgot to try. I'm so glad I was turned onto Tim by one of my students. Makes me very happy for the future of guitar. And its REALLY great that he always seems like such a nice person; he's confident but not arrogant, eclectic and thoughtful. Great interview Rick.
What a joy to see Tim as a real person and talking real music/studio work. Just magical. Amazing to see how you are able to showcase artists and make me feel like I'm sharing a room with you both. Big cheers and happy holidays to you and yours.
It may be the ticktok era but I LOVE this kind of long-form interview/conversation. Rick and Tim, THANK YOU for sitting down for a really interesting and fun conversation.
Agreed.
Who the fuck uses tiktok for an interview...
The guys called it "the ticktok era" during the interview re: going viral, promotion, etc. I'm always really interested seeing how artists think about the technical parts of making music and the weird parts of marketing and the business.
Great interview with Tim Henson. Love him or hate him there is no denying his absolute dedication to his craft. Saw Polyphia recently in Houston and was very impressed. Nice to see someone come along and totally change the musical landscape. Polyphia is only getting started turning the world of music on its ear. Can't wait to see what Tim and Polyphia pull off next. Outstanding discussion. I now have a much greater appreciation for the intricacies that go into creating a song. My mind was blown so many times throughout this video and I was constantly smiling from ear-to-ear. Thank you Rick and Tim 🤘
Dude is amazing. Incredible player and musician, incredibly knowledgeable, innovator - a generational talent.
Jazz chords played very fast , its all well and good banging away at light speed but no one cares unless you can put words to the music , hence why Ed Sheeran and Stormzy are better musicians they understand the kids on the street , Tim comes across to me as an upper class spoiled kid who had mummy and daddy pay tuition for his life lol

Great to see that people care for such in depth interviews, cool content format!
Whenever these two get together something great happens.
You can see Rick's enjoyment when he listen to the songs.
Tim is getting used to interview. Back in the days he said that “I play guitar coz I can’t talk”. But dude, not only the music but also Tim himself are becoming more mature and inspirational as we all can see now. My guitar hero!
He's still a bit awkward and weird, but that is perfectly fine. I wish my brain and fingers could do 10% of what he can do, but he still seems so humble.
I would not say that is awkward but cute and shy.❤️
I'm kind of like that too - I am silent because I can't talk and can't play guitar. It's groovy.
Rick lets people be themselves and lets them take the interview in the way his guest wants....this is such a enjoyable experience...thank you

Super stoked to see the studio build. Love hearing the mentality behind it too
Great interview. I knew Tim was an incredible guitar player, but he's also quite knowledgeable about studio work as well as music in general. There's hope that the guitar continues to have a future with talent like this popping up.
I love how Rick truly appreciates and understands the complexity of Polyphia's music, and lets Tim explain little details with great enthusiasm. He is such a great conversationalist.

What a bright and pleasant young man...I am now a bigger fan because of his humility and candid honesty... Superb interview!
Such a nice and interesting video. So refreshing to finally get an talk where Tim has space to elaborate and talk about his music. Love Tims playing/music (and not so much like the way to loud kick drum on last album.....). He is one of my absolute favourite guitarist/musician, truly a creator of a NEW style and evolving.
It's great to see a virtuoso create music and not just video game loops. All these guys are amazing. The drummer is insane too.

Anyway, I really love this interview. I just discovered Polyphia for the first time, and Tim is now my favourite guitarist, so it was really cool to listen to him talk about his passion. Even if I don’t understand most of it (not a guitarist or an instrumentalist at all, unfortunately… no opportunity or money…), I still really love to hear it. Keep it up. Love these up close interviews with musicians about their craft where you guys just geek out together. It’s amazing.
And man… that Chino track is sick… all of Polyphia’s music is amazing so far, but I was wondering how vocals would sit with it. Couldn’t be happier with a result like that. It was intense.

I'm continually impressed by Tim, both as a guitar player and as a person. Him and Polyphia have blown up and it really seems like he's kept his feet on the ground, intensely focused on improving his craft. Not only is it rare for music like this to be gaining so much traction, but it's rare for artists at this level to keep their head on their shoulders. I gain more confidence with every interview I see that he's successfully navigating fame's pitfalls. That's inspiring on its own.

Godin guitars in Canada have been making amazing electric nylons very similar to this for over 10 years, called the Multiac. (Also available in steel string).
Even before Godin, Gibson made the Chet Atkins CE from 1981-95. I guess the "CE" stood for Classical Electric. Too bad I sold mine many years ago.
Cordoba has their stage nylon and it’s pretty much the same vibe. Runs about $699 so I put one on layaway last week. Can’t wait to get it home.
Yeah I plan getting a Godin Multiac
