Thank you so much for having me, Rick. ❤️
Thank you both for doing this!
Mateus you're great..you sound like Phil keaggy to me..keep playing bro..regards from Australia 💓
Great having you brother!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Great interview as always…. Obrigado 🥂
Rapaz, o Rick escolhe a dedo com quem ele bate papo. Ele conversou com Peter Frampton, Sting, Jon Anderson, Ron Carter, Brian May e outros pesos pesados. Cada um desses monstros tem no mínimo 50 anos de estrada. Você tá de parabéns de fazer parte desse seleto grupo. Porque o Rick não queima cartucho com quem não tem bala. Parabéns pelo reconhecimento, bola pra frente.
The best!! Vai Brasillll
Kikão da massa aqui!? Aí sim, papai haha E Kiko, convence o Dave a deixar vc colocar uns toques latinos e brazucas nos riffs e solos do Megadeth haha 😎
Grande Kiko.
@Kiko Loureiro you need to be the next on @Rick Beato channel
We need you as well! E ainda por cima falando do seu álbum solo e Angra!
IHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
We didn't need another reason to love you, Rick, but here it is. You helped the world get Mateus Asato back!
@@Wizardofgosz It's literally what the first part of the video is about.
Watch the first part again. I wouldn't say he was depressed more like reevaluating where he fit in musically. Not that he had to but all creative people go through phases like that.
You have some Rick on your nose
Amazing
Caralho, até tu aqui! Hahahahahha
Que dahora! Era fã.
Oloko bixo, até tu aqui 👏🏻👏🏻
Meteu um 'amazing'
God Bless Rick’s parents. They raised a fine man who is there when others are in need.
@P¡nned By Rick Beato•• lmao rick beato bot bruh
Very Well Said!!!
Amen to that.
Sometimes the most empathetic people come from abusive families where they were not afforded that same empathy. Safe not to assume anything about someone's childhood. But I agree with the sentiment. Rick is a very warm person and it shows.
@@jonunderscore He came from a rather large family. Odds are, one of them had to turn out good.
The love and gratitude that he showed towards Rick made me emotional. What a genuine guy on top of being a phenomenal guitarist.
Yeah. I always love it when two fans of each other let each other know they are such fans of each other! *Genuine reciprocal admiration!*
@@andyroid5028 There was a song from a 1956 Broadway play called Mutual Admiration Society. Covered by a few people and a pretty big hit at the time. Rick should incorporate this song into his interviews. Probably wouldn't get the video blocked.
Seriously, what a great guy. I really appreciated seeing that too
Ditto!
Mateus represents the best from Brazil: Talent, humility and a friendly personality 🇧🇷💥
funny cause kiko the above comment is exactly the same and INSANELY talented
Him and Kiko
Anderson vc por aqui!
After Ozielzinho,he is my 2nd fav guitarist from Brazil!!
Many, many Brazilian guitarists seem to have amazing skills. Its common to play with exceptional expression and personality, so its not just about technical skills. I've never been to Brazil, but I'm pretty sure the whole country is jam packed full of great guitarists.
It's the flavor they bring with their music.
not just guitar players... brazilian bass players seem to have a lot of groove too.
I would say packed full of great musicians, not only guitarists. The thing is that barrier language keeps them inside the hole most of the time. Brazil is a curious case of not fitting musically in Latin America and not fitting in pop world scene for not singing in English, or you can't connect with local audience. There's a whole scene that happens there - and only there - and there are great musical folks making it.
Well, there are a lot of Brazilians, so statistically we are bound to get a good number of good musicians. But you do have a point. Brazil is extremely musical. It is a huge country full of regional music styles, rhythms, influences and a veritable melting pot of cultures. We've always really loved stringed instruments for some reason. Brazilians have been hooked on guitars ever since the Jesuits first brought old renaissance and baroque guitars to evangelize the native population.
Brazilian culture diversity plays a major influence on forming "its" guitar players high standards techniques: African rhythm + European Classic Music + the desire to ever create new sounds.
Again!!! Rick Beato is saving music one video at a time. The proof is right here!
YES
Indeed
You are so right ❤
I honestly can’t remember the last time I found a guitarist as inspiring as I find Mateus. Every little detail of his playing is just so perfectly phrased, what an incredible musician.

Mateus is 100% correct; what you do here Rick is SO important and valuable for the music community. Thank you. Great video!
His playing on Polyphia's song Drown is just unreal. Great interview between 2 pretty chill dudes
Damn Rick looks like a proud dad lol, it's so wholesome. Also, I need a solo album from Mateus asap.
Ditto that.... And no f bombs were dropped throughout the interview. Such a rare thing these days.
Rick Beato - The Guitar Therapist!
So this is what makes Rick special. He doesn't just care about the music, but also about the musicians - their life story and their motivation.
This is the behind the scenes work that it takes to keep the love for music going. Good work, sir.
Agreed. Thank you so much Rick
Amen brother
Great comment, mate
Yes!!!
I went to music school with Mateus. Even back in 2012 he was awesome - hard working and humble towards everyone. A really solid guy. Great to see him where he is now.
Absolutely one of the greatest players of today. The way he slides chords and doubles stops around like a pen on paper is just insane.
"Like a pen on a paper" I like that haha
17:36 DUDE!!!! Mateus, you just melted my mind, maestro madman ❤❤❤❤!!! Trust me though, it is *I* (and the rest of us at Musicians Institute) who did the gnarliest of learning from your SIIICK pickin' self!! But I sincerely appreciate you talking about this... the coolness of chord ornamentation, chord partials, doubletops, rhythm fills, in that (or ANY) style. With your tasteful beastliness, you single-handedly have rejuvenated that approach on the geet... exposing it HEAPS of peeps... thus creating HOPE for the guitar community... which in the opinion of many, has been dipping into "stale" territory, for the last while. THANK YOU for your musical (and friendship) gifts, mayun!! We at Musicians Institute are all honored, and you deserve every droplet of your success ❤Hugs to you man! And hopefully see you soon...
And geez, RICK! Most grateful to you for playing a pivotal role in Mateus getting his MUSE and MOJO back... You are a guitar hero in yet ANOTHER way :-) Thank you for hosting this most magical cat in your pickin' parlor, a sentiment obviously shared by the other billion people soaking up your channel's indispensable goods!
If u do a lesson like you taught mateus in channel I think people will loved it so much😊😊😊
I hadn't heard if you before but you're very cool! Would love to know what you think about Heitor TP (Pereira).
@@lilgreenmomo I LOVE Heitor--so much so that I saved my VERY LAST EVER acoustic column in Guitar World magazine, for him... though they messed up one thing.... editing what I wrote in the 1st paragraph, making it sound like he attended Berklee (when he actually studied with his friends who were going there at the time). Huge fan of his scores, and his playing on others' scores. Especially with Hans Zimmer.
Just very happy to know all this man! Wow...
Amazing to get to read this. You guys have such big wise hearts. And it's amazing to me as a guitar player how much of a gem this interview is. All three of you inspire me, passionately, and you sincerely brought a tear to my eyes. I hope guitar grows back in some way! You're definitely helping atleast!
Fascinating. Something that is never talked about in this production-driven culture is the need to incubate and take a break. Creativity is not simply a physical activity. The constant need to practice and "hone one's chops" is not what making art is about. The pressure to perform can burn an artist/musician out. That Mateus Asato admits that he lost interest for a short spell is refreshingly honest. It does not and should not mean he wasn't, during that time, every bit the creative force he is. Bravo to him and you Rick for this interview.
totally agree
I came by being a little curious. I leave as a fan. What a nice, humble guy with a heart of gold.
My native Countryman 😊
I left Brazil in 1967 at age 5, as the only one in my family born there and obviously this is a HUGE treat for me 😊
So...after watching that incredible Sting interview, amongst others, we get this brilliant interview. Can we all just acknowledge how skilled Rick is at interviewing amazing musicians. That is yet another difficult skill to master that Rick seems to have added to his alreasy impressive array of talents. Well done Mr Beato. And amazing playing, as ever, Mateus.
Rick is so well versed, he knows exactly what questions musicians want to know the answers to!
Love this! Mateus really hasn’t done interviews. So important.
What a genuine, beautiful soul. Honest and humble. Real.
Aside from all of this musical wisdom, this is a really great lesson of human kindness and compassion. Rick reached out to Matteus at a critical time. A time when, similarly, we all might be caught up in the doldrums. So, it's important to celebrate our "blessings" daily... musically and beyond.
Rick's a legend for just reaching out to Mateus when he was feeling down and overwhelmed.
The best therapist EVER. You have no idea. :D
Very enjoyable watch, guys. Cheers!
Nice to see you here, Uncle Ben.
Some luxury chords right there, uncle.
Ben !
Mateus is a real gem for the guitar world, as a guitarist, thank you Rick from the bottom of my heart
I really enjoyed this interview as I do most all Rick videos. Mataus seems so nice and down to earth. So positive and encouraging. It’s inspiring me to play and practice more and I will be checking out his music as I just learned about him from this video.:)
We as brazilians are very proud of Mateus. Thank you Rick!
I like your women
Such a nice and likeable guy. Wish him every success in the world
Never heard of Mateus until now. What a phenomenon. You are a great interviewer Rick. Always letting the interviewee have their say without interruption.
Absolutely brilliant.
I was introduced to him about 3 years ago. It was like when I first heard EVH, I thought, "who is this guy, what is this stuff?". He just changes the way you think about playing. Total inspiration.
Have you been living under a rock?
@@samhaokip9126 Maybe he was busy.
Omg I love this guy. He's so likeable and relatable. And Rick is just being the coolest dad on the planet.
Never heard of the guy until now. My loss. I will DEFINITELY be listening for him in the future. A great mix of musicality and technique. Rick -- kudos for the interview and helping him get over a few moments of doubt.
Dude if I was in Rick’s position I would be smiling too when i see someone like Mateus play infront of me.. I’d be in awe..
Simplesmente incrível ver um artista brasileiro desbravando o mercado na gringa. Viva, Mateus Asato!
Just awesome to see a brazilian musician thriving abroad! Brazilian music rocks. Viva, Asato!
"na gringa" significa abroad?

He is 100% correct! I'm an (ex?) Pro Strongman who has been through chemotherapy and now I'm losing my ability to walk. My wife bought me my first guitar a few years ago when I was struggling through chemo and although I had a rough time looking at screens (or remembering anything from the medication) I have watched a ton of your channel. You explain things so differently than everyone else and you put LIFE into the stories of music. For me you do anyway. Never forget that YOU CHANGE THE WORLD for many people by just being you. Thank you and thank you Mateus as well.
I wish you well in your recovery and hope you get back to full strength again soon. Good luck with your guitar journey as well. ✌🏻
Hope you get better brother! God bless you!
@@chrislestermusic Whoa...I never expected anyone would read this much less reply. Thank you SO MUCH.
@@henry247 Thank you so very very much!
Wishing you all the best man! Hope you can recover soon
You're a treasure Rick. Mateus has the most honest beaming soul, he's obviously an empath.
The way Mateus plays and the music he makes is just unique. He makes the guitar sound almost like a different instrument than most everyone else.
Amazing and touching interview. Great content as always.
This video is a piece of art. Made me emotional a few times just from a conversation between two kind and talented souls. Also, it's a pleasure being from Brazil as well. Vai Brasil, vai Mateus!
And I did not even know this guy existed! Nobody speaks about him in Brazil! No media, specialized channels, anything!
But, the guy is good!
im from brazil and im a huge fan of you Rick and its a blessing to see a brazilian being featured here!! Amazing work always!! Mateus is awesome!!
What a cool and humble dude.
this guy is not just a virtuoso - he plays with such soul
Omg, Rick, I've been a fan for a while, you are a teacher of all kinds of music and music history, amazing. Mateus, newfound magician of the guitar, I'm honored to know of your skills. I've always marveled of Brazilian Portuguese, a harmonious language for sure. I'll never be the same after this video, thank you both.
I can’t believe he’s only 28! He has so much wisdom and feeling in his playing. I can’t wait to hear how he sounds in 10 years!
Wow those 37 minutes flew by!!! I could listen to this for hours!!!! I'm so happy you got to do this interview!!! Please get Guthrie Govan next!!! Can't wait Rick!!! Viva Mateus!!!!!!
Omg, he actually never had Guthrie on... The final boss.
The way how Rick handled this interview was amazing. Matheus starts it so introvert and a little uncomfortable, and soon after he was so light, eyes on eyes, with a smile on his face.
I love Mateus' vibe, so calm. Also credits to Rick for his MAD skill as a listener!
Happy to see Mateus around here! He's such an awesome guitarist
Hugs from Brazil ❤️🇧🇷
I discovered this kid a couple years ago on You Tube. So many great guitarists on YT but most spend too much time on shredding for my liking. Mateus has that Jimi/Vaughn style melody that I do not get bored after 5 minutes on. I would love to see him live with a band if he ever comes to the NC area.
Orgulho do Brasil !
Rick realized he was having trouble in his career, and immediately decided to message him. What a person. I subscribe to this for years now and from time to time yt reminds of checking him and Im always glad.
Mateus, você é foda!
Everyone… by now, has to really realize… that Rick is changing the World of Music? I mean… seriously. Rick is a “great” influence on music. I can only imagine what wisdom & compassion Rick rammed into his ears. Thank you Universe and UA-cam for these great guitar players and new friends 😃
Tell that to those blocking his videos!
@@mitchweiner So true
just hope we can get back to more music with instruments.... all this fake singing beeps and whirrs is garbage
This was the most interesting guitar interview I have ever seen. I didn’t know of Mateus before this, but to see a person who radiates such amazing talent seemingly unknown to themselves. His humility makes you think he just picked up a guitar for the first time, but in his technique you see the most amazing thing you ever heard. Just wow!
What a nice and God blessed guitarist! ❤️🎸😊
Mateus is a beast. The amount of resources he has when doing ANYTHING, is outstanding. He really has no limits.
Both these men are just legends. So humle and honest and they deserve the best for making our lives better with their music, wisdom and inspiration.
What a genuine soul. Love his playing.
De Campo Grande, no Mato Grosso do Sul, para o mundo. Sensacional! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Rick's efforts to keep contemporary instrumental music alive are priceless.
As a fan of both musicians, I’m really happy to see them together. Wish the video was a day long😅
Oh wow, Mateus seems so genuine and just so wonderful to be around. He's no messing around and he has a love of all the things he connects with. Hard to turn a guy like that down. It was great of you to reach out to him Rick, and I'm proud to be subscribed to someone like that. Also, I hope he gets to take one of those LP Juniors home or he gets sent one at some point because it really looks like it suits him! (Even if he loves his Suhrs!) Only listened to a couple of his bits but will make sure to listen to more now.
Rick, I sincerely appreciate you and the platform you've created for the guitar and music community! You are truly a triple OG in the game! Mateus was then and still is a friend of mine from those days at the Musicians Institute and yes, certainly an outstanding player and gifted personality.
Mateus, thank you for inspiring me to unlock my potential on the electric guitar! Had I not met you when I did, I'd surely still be miles behind where my playing stands. You're a better teacher than you give yourself credit for.
Rick is the best. He gave Mateus comfort and advice during a tough time.
This is my introduction Mateus. Because I'm old. Because I'm a drummer. Amazing 😳! Forever in Rick's debt. Melodic, slippery, fast, precise, original, beautiful virtuosic playing. Never seen/heard anything quite like this.
Both of you were great together! Could have watched two more hours, for sure.
Rick gave Mateus a "jump start" at the side of a lonely road in the middle of the night while raining. Great job Rick.
Man, the progression change at 35:31 were such great change of vibes. Mateus is really really good in putting emotion in his playing while keeping it alive throughout.
Love his playing and his hair he is goated! 🙌❤
❤️
Lucky you girl! 🤩 Wish you the best to both ❤️
You're an excellent interviewer Rick - you ask quality, interesting and relevant questions, then you let the guest talk. A lost art ;)
Totally agree.
Mr. Mautaus and YOU Helped me so much! I am 68 and have been playing for three years. I am SO CONCERNED that I will not live long enough to get semi-good. To hear this young man talk about sucking and getting better lets me know it is OK. I will never be completely happy with my performance. RICK, YOU SHOULD INTERVIEW AN OLDER PERSON WHO IS NEWLY LEARNING! I love this channel! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
What an amazing guy. So modest and such an incredible player! And most importantly, you can see he enjoys himself :)
Saw Mateus in Vegas with Silk Sonic! Dude is 🔥! His playing is unique and inventive. I’m going back to see them again this week to see one of their final shows just to see and hear Mateus one more time!!!
Every few years, a breakout guitar player hits the scene: advancing the art-of-guitar by displaying skills that are truly new and creative, and elevating expectations for what can be accomplished on guitar. For our space n time, Mateus is that player.
I think Mateus Mancuso, Julian Lage, and Plini deserve mention too.
Tosin Abasi
I would add Isaiah Sharkey to that list

What a refreshing interview. Rick, thank you for saving Mateus from his funk and allowing him return with a spark.
OMG!!!!!!! MATEUSÃO voando, cara!!! He's a freaking monster on guitar!!
Rick seems to be a nice guy on the screen. The story with Mateus shows he's not faking it :)
Awesome connection, great story ! As always Rick Thank you !
What a gift this guy is. You too Rick. Thank you so much for bringing him on and inspiring him to share his brilliant gift with the world again.
Rick has such a platform now that his reach extends to these top tier musicians who don’t mind giving their time to appearing on this channel to share their stories. A+
Mateus is such a national treasure. Always a joy to hear him play!
And by the way, Gibson is just asleep not to release the Rick Beato Signature DC Les Paul. Such an amazing tone
Great interview! Always with so much respect and love for the craft and the people! Keep it up Rick, we all need this so much right now!
What a fabulous interview! Thank you Rick for the support you gave a fellow human in their time of confusion
Mateus playing insane licks.
Beato mezmerized.
Mateus finishes and says, "like that."
Beato :-|
Duude, what's going on these last few days on UA-cam with so much stuff related to brazilian music/musicians!? First, Rick Beato was interviewed by Nelson Faria, a phenomenal brazilian guitar player with an also awesome UA-cam channel. Then, a couple days ago, Charles Cornell released a whole video essay about the origins of Bossa Nova, a full history lesson on that! And now Mateus being interview by Rick!? What an amazing moment to be brazilian! Love from Brazil, Rick! Mateus is a blessing, so sad that he isn't as revered in here as he is in the US, for example. Such a phenomenal guitar player, he should be showing up all around TV shows and all that here!
sounded like joe pass at 25:00
So very heartfelt, Rick you really are creating a musical legacy for now and future generations . Thank you.
That was so wonderful!!!!! Rick, you are so perfect for our time. Thank You again and again.
“When I get this guitar in my hand and I am on stage, I feel like Superman”
That is a brilliant quote right there!
Dá-lhe Mateus! Orgulho e alegrias que estás de volta! Que legal essa entrevista! Way to go Rick! Awesome!
Thank you Rick for having Mateus! What an amazing video 😀🎸
That was super touching! A great meeting of shining souls. Thank you Rick & Mateus 💖
I remember having country guitar class with Mateus and he was always so humble and nice. He’s a beast
Wow. You know what's funny, is that the conversation and playing at 25 minutes in, Mateus is talking about double stops and rhythm giving credit to Hendrix, Mayer, Frusciante, etc. and then he plays a little improvisation which struck my ears as also an homage to Joe Pass, Bucky Pizzarelli and many other great jazzers. Great interview and Mateus has some sick skills.
I loved this interview so much! Just the best time ever❤
Beautiful episode. Thank you Rick and Mateus.
Mateus is such an influential and talented guitar player. What I really admire though is really how humble, and fascinated by music he is.
Never knew that Mateus had a break like this. Hope he finds what he is looking for, whatever that is. Stay safe, both of you.
Another lovely interview, and an exposure to a new artist. Thank you very much Rick
This is the best interview you have done thus far Rick, being able to give a voice to this legend and bringing him to light is such an amazing accomplishment. Thank you!
