well said video Simon. Insurance runs between 90-150 a month depending on what you will be using for commercially. Also depending what jobs are given extra insurance may have to be purchased.. One of my journalist collegues has an aerial company now with two phantoms. He ended up being several thousand to include many extras like night time flying. I believe he is one of only a handful in the country who can undertake this. Also if doing film work in an urban area ground crew may also need to be qualified in specific safety areas. And individual consents will need to be applied for for specific shoots. Keep it hobby and fun is my motto in life!! why make money from aerial and end up not enjoying it when you are thousands in the hole!! keep the vids coming. Hope you enjoy the groundstation.
Excellent! This has saved tons of time scouring the net for the information. Thank you, your time and effort is appreciated. I don't own a 'quadcopter' (never even flown one) but I've been looking at the Phantom 2 vision+ recently and was hoping at some point to make it pay its way as there is clearly an opportunity to do so, but it looks like the costs may be prohibitive for a while yet.
In addition to the info in the video, if you have a current and valid private pilots licence (PPL) for a motor driven aircraft, such as light aircraft or microlight, you can use that to bypass the ground school aspect of the courses available and would only need to take the practical flying skills test. This is because a current pilot will already know the rule and principles of flight and have an understanding of the weather. This would greatly reduce the cost to below 50% of taking the full course. Please check for yourself, but this is how I understand the current rules as of 2015 updates and amendments.
okay so why is it that a car licence of £75 with commercial use which is far more dangerous than any drone etc can be, is cheaper than a drone licence!? Whats going on here? Is this just another money making scam? It doesnt make any sense. Is it because a RC copter isnt using any oil? Someone explain please and thanks for the info. Why so expensive even though no ones been killed yet!?
Hey your pen in this video looks like one of my video pens they are awesome and cheap these days love your videos by the way learning a lot from your videos keep up the good work many thanks for the lessons as well think I haven't broken any laws yet in using my Phantom 2 well I think I haven't
So the stark reality is that the CAA have created an environment where you can make more money training the people who want to fly a Quadcopter than you can making aerial footage. What a wonderful environment for innovation and creativity. Personally I would imagine only safety breaches would be pursued rather than someone making a few quod from a monetised UA-cam video.
Great Video Simon, here's where the water gets muddy though, if I just make hobby videos & upload them to you tube & subsequently attract a large amount of subscribers & my channel is monetized am I then breaking any laws ? also I have heard of people filming for people, not charging for the actual filming but just charging for the editing ! a legal loophole ?
***** I've only been hobby flying my P2V+ for the three weeks since christmas and have been approached by a Channel 4 documentary company for permission to use footage I already have. Thankfully the ANO (Article 166, Paragraph 5) is fairly unambiguous on this, I don't need any CAA permission unless I flew any of those sorties for the purpose of gaining any valuable consideration. So as the CAA see it, because: 1) I'm a hobbist RPAS operator, flying purely for fun 2) My videos are not monetised ...then any subsequently offered opportunity of monetary gain for the footage I've previously aquired, is completely irrelevant to the reason that my flights ocurred in the first place.
Thx for sharing Simon.. im not into DJI stuff but i am interested in obtaining the legal documents, like you mentioned it is what it is, there's no way around it.. since ive already read up a little on this subject before watching your video, something that i cant seem to find out, do you know if a " 2nd operator " say for example someone that`s just in control of the camera would they need the license to ? pay the same fee`s etc ?
***** hope so.. i was thinking the CAA would look at it and say well what if the operator was " unwell " how could the camera operator take over if they don`t have the license.. but i`ll look into it.. thx for the reply Simon !
hi Simon thank you for you insight to to UK Law, what if I film in another country as a hobby and use the footage for commercial work here would that be legal?
How does one compile an Operations Manual ? Is it substantially a matter of logging individual / unit flight data. If so, does this information have to be submitted in any particular format ? Also, would I be right in thinking that the bodies that are able to offer courses that satisfy the CAA offer guidance on how to compile an Operations Manual ? The reason I ask is because I want to know exactly what an Operations Manual consists of, before I proceed further.
I'm looking to buy a DJI Phantom Vision Plus +. I'd like to offer this service to my clients but at NO CHARGE. Even though it would be used commercially to promote their business... if I am not making money from it would I need a commercial license and insurance?
so I just got a phantom 3 standard , its great =D. My channel is able to monetize my videos how ever I don't have a Google ad sense account so I can't get paid . If I don't put ads on my videos will I still get hunted down ? I realise you haven't got ads on your videos
***** Thanks for the quick reply Simon, appreciated. Living in Scotland, The Resource Group courses (RPQ-s) are fully booked in Edinburgh till the end of the year and there seems to be only Cwmbran in South Wales left. Cant really see this being a viable option unless the work was already lined up and a license was all that was required. As usual the UK government does it's best to keep it's friends in the money and restricts those that want a piece of the pie to chasing rainbows unless they ££££ through the nose. #Uggh
***** Will probably leave it for just now, get the rest of the year in practicing with the Phantom. Who knows, might be able to recoup some of the cost with a couple of friendly local homers.... Thanks for the help.
Do drones have to be ce certified for the UK. I asked the maker of autel x star. They said they cannot be used in the UK due to ce certification. If this is the case are DJI drones ce certified?
ok mate, many thanks for your reply :-) can u just tell me the one thing, i sent to caa qestion but they of course have 28days to reply. If im thinking to open my own buisness and i havent got a licence and permission, can i go to my friend weeding to do video? only to check myself if it is job for me and didint get any money for that.
such a shame , it looks like a deliberate attempt by the CAA to make it a non viable business for phantom owners, even if you are CAA approved, you can't really get the shots the customer would want legally. Min 50m from a person structure or building, whats the point in that, most customers would demand close ups etc, and in turn this would put your operating licence at risk and void your insurance!!!
***** but these limitation kills the viability of making any serious business out it.More or less the only sports event you can cover is teenagers on dirt bikes provided there is no restriction on that premises. you would make more money just using your GOPRO as oppose to flying it on a drone. The irony is most people flying it for leisure are already making money off their videos or pictures.its just another stupid regulation that plays into the hands of the cowboys.Stupid regulations create black market.
Jesus, I mean upward of a thousand quid just to take some photos and vids using an RC copter and legally take money. Who would do this, all that hassle for something that lets face it, isn't going to earn you very much. And you can't do any FPV, at all? I can tell you this much, I'm gonna be breaking some laws when I get one. FPV FTW, what they don't know won't hurt me, because I won't be uploading anything.

***** No clients at all. I'll be purchasing the Phantom purely for pleasure purposes initially and bending a few ears at the same time. :)
***** That's the plan. :)
Nice video, best walk-through of the options I've seen.

Thanks for some very useful advice! Am a newbie with big ideas for my drones.

Luckily I researched into this, I was going to buy a Phantom 3 Professional to enhance my cinematography.
I love that sticker. And i think you should lock the auto focus on ur camera

How can they tell the footage is from the UK?
***** OH i just mean for footage on UA-cam etc
So the stark reality is that the CAA have created an environment where you can make more money training the people who want to fly a Quadcopter than you can making aerial footage. What a wonderful environment for innovation and creativity.

£700 course? where?
just curious, how many phantoms you got ??? if you dnt mind saying ..

Both companies websites are somewhat confusing on their pricing, did you manage to unravel them?

+Simon Newton Thank you Simon, it clears things up most succinctly.
i want to use a drone to shoot a restaurant that in a town centre, will a CAA qualification allow me to do this?
I'm looking to buy a DJI Phantom Vision Plus +. I'd like to offer this service to my clients but at NO CHARGE. Even though it would be used commercially to promote their business... if I am not making money from it would I need a commercial license and insurance?
does this include monitorized youtube videos? am i alright to fly with registration and insurance?
so I just got a phantom 3 standard , its great =D. My channel is able to monetize my videos how ever I don't have a Google ad sense account so I can't get paid . If I don't put ads on my videos will I still get hunted down ? I realise you haven't got ads on your videos
really me too!
Hey man cheers for the tips. Do you know of anyone who's went through the hoops to get the licence from the CAA, and if so how long would it take?

Rocking in a free world: Yes. Put it this way, if it's not present its illegal.
does any of u got that permission from caa? what is a total rougly cost?
so is it no chance to have it without licence and all those trainings?
ok mate, many thanks for your reply :-) can u just tell me the one thing, i sent to caa qestion but they of course have 28days to reply. ok, cool. Thats what i want to know. Thanks mate
just buy your drone and do what you want with it . knowone owns the sky....
Mini Mechanic yes i think the same what a load of sizz
Its kind of all depressing really, if you want to go legal lol Think I'm just going to stay on the fun side of things but within legal limits.

I'm law abiding, but I love going to other countries where there are NO restrictions and letting her rip.
It is NOT a drone fgs!!!
