I only discovered he existed about a year ago. I wondered how one can fail to notice that level of talent. He is awesome and SO expressive. He has become my favorite violinist.
In the early 1990s, I was roaming around Tower Records (remember?!) in the classical room. I heard this playing over the speakers. Walked towards the music and completely tranced. It was surreal. Afterwards, I walked right up to the counter, asked who this was, bought my first Vengerov CD recording.
This is mind boggling in its musical depth and technical mastery; what gorgeous tone and perfectly chosen tempi! The 36 people who voted this thumbs down are deaf, dumb, and blind.
These early performances are very interesting because he is full of energy, and he is trying to prove himself, while he is also fearless and cool as ice.
My favourite passage as well! Vengerov plays it slightly slower/steadier in these days and you can truly appreciate the harmonies more. For me it feels like Tchaikovsky was imaging ballroom dancing with a forbidden lover (his love for a certain type of person has been documented and there's no way he would've been allowed to dance with this person in public. It's a real shame, but at least he could express himself through his wonderful music!)
I think it is the best performance of this Tchaikovsky concert that I have met in UA-cam. Maxim plays so lyrically, without that modern self-exposure of the $best violinist of nowadays$, giving place to music itself, giving right place to the orchestra. Well, Russian music can be best played by Russian, not to become more general ()...However. This is the spirit beyond the notes and the technique. And the respect for the composer :) Wonderful audio! Thanks. Poklon!

Wow ! until today we can say that Let’s go back to see Mr. Young Maxim play one of the most difficult violin concerto since at his young ages (1990) , Wonderful !
oone of my fave violinist, put effort in every piece, makes it look easy, but when he played this piece not too fast like Heifetz, all notes were right , i feel every emotion he put onto it.
O lucrare dedicată artei violonistice de mare și puternică expresiune de stări sufletești în dialogul dintre solistul violonist și orchestra cu artiști de perfecțiune interpretativă. Felicitări pentru toți artiștii și dirijorului.
I have seen this video in 1991 I think be cause Alexei Sultan ov just won the gold at the van cliburn competition who also appeared after his performance, He was amazing even then going on 17,and Alexei was 18 or 19 at this time,Pavel really did an excellent job in conducting especially snce the tempo was fast and furious !!! Bit he got noticed for his brilliance especially the solo part, but my take is he is still out of this world then, and look at him now,!!!
Imho, this performance is better than the one 30 years later, in terms of Vengerov's passion and the fantastic European recording compared to the crapy Russian recording.
PaperGrape facts if anything it was slow but I’m sure that was partially vengerovs choice, now in his later age we see him keeping things even more tame
I wonder what violin he is playing on here. I've only ever seen him play it in this footage. It looks "purchase-able" in the sense that Maxim could've bought the violin many years before this performance, and so he would be very comfortable playing on it. It doesn't sound as brilliant as a Strad, Guad, or Del Gesu though.... it could still be Italian but maybe just a relatively unknown maker from Naples or Milan, something like that.
WOW, no computer games or iPhone mucking about for this boy; amazing!! Two gifted hands attached to a brilliant mind driven by a passionate heart! Could have use a haircut in my opinion! Bravo Maxim you are one of the best!!!!
The best interpretation of the piece is considered the one from Leonid Kogan who's son is conducting this performance...! But this version is great too, almost touching the perfection...!
Orchester diriger : pavel kogan, the father leonid kogan on the tchaikovsky concerto destroy vengerov. But vengerov is a prodige!! Excelent violonist. But kogan the best
Maxim was born on August 20, 1974, that means he was only 16 when he played this wonderful concert.
Simply amazing.

one of his very best Tchaikowsky performances

Magnificent performance at any age ... at 16 year old artist, astounding!
listened 2 a lot of tchaikovsky violin concertos and this 1 is easily my favorite recording. such amazing playing
8:21 how can a violin sound this sweet? I’ve never heard another great soloist with a strad sound this sweet before!
It is a sound to fall in love with!

I have a slight sense of it being utterly effortless - almost as if his bow is moving by itself
fantastic
I guess this is how it was meant to be played.composed by a Russian and performed by a Russian.A composition based on Russian folk melodies.
Exactly..
The sound of the violin outstands the full orchestra
