It is such a pleasure to be alive, and to have experienced this level of musicianship and artistry. I was actually privileged to hear Lawrence Foster conduct the Houston symphony, Sibelius violin concerto, with Perlman as soloist 1977. It was a two night, sold out event...I went both nights. First night I was 5th row center, second night I went to the balcony to hear the difference. It was a stunning performance....simul-cast by KLEF radio....which I recorded...and still own. The difference between Perlman and the last couple generations of violinists is, he approaches the audience with the attitude, "I want to tell you a beautiful story, which I love". The others are "Watch how fast I can play, watch me stray from the score because you don't realize I'm just on an ego trip". Perlman is class....A-Z.
Actually, the music flows (probably from the head) through his entire body. The real mystery is ... you don't see it happening. It's like his entire organism (plus his soul) is doing the work. Amazing!

I agree with you 100%. I have had the honor attending Perlman's concerts in person several times. Each time I hear him whether on a recording, a concert being broadcasted live, or by attending his concerts, his performance has lifted me to the Divine. I am a big fan of Brahms, and no other violinist of my 76 years on this planet has come even close to matching Perlman when he plays the Brahms Violin Concerto. 😊
I think you'd have to be dead not to appreciate Itzhak Perlman's genius and talent - a remarkable gift - & obviously one he loves and worked hard to attain. Thank God such beauty is now very accessible to us due to technology - and may He richly bless and keep Itzhak playing for years to come.
Er spielt nicht die Geige, er ist die Geige! Er spielt nicht Musik, er ist Musik! Es ist einfach unglaublich, daß es Menschen wie Itzhak Perlman gibt! ( zum Glück: Es gibt sie!)
What a memory box our friend here must have, no musical notations are neccessery, it goes on from the opening notes to the end. True artisanship! God bless each and every one if you!
Go to 8:11 and you'll feel in heaven. I find no words to express the mastery of this big master to convey musical beauty from the arch. And he does it in an apparently natural, effortless way... almost too much!

The comment by Korean Jeong YunGal below says it all! Itzhak is not only a great violinist, but also a warm-hearted and deep man who understands and loves all the world. No wonder we can't help but get a little teary-eyed (especially we seniors) with his sharing of the ethereal fruits of all his decades of hard training and practice and dedication, with blood, sweat and tears, to perfect his art and pour it out in love and compassion over us all. A great master of the violin and of the heart and human mind. We need more loving and responsible humans like him on this earth!
Without a doubt, one of the finest examples of this intense emotional masterpiece evoked here, spanning sweet tenderness to an omnipotent boldness, enabling every nuance and expression reach their highest heights.
Of all the music I love, this is, indisputably, my favorite piece of music. I think this is the most beautiful violin concerto ever written, and here (accompanied by the great London Philharmonic orchestra) it is performed by perhaps the greatest violinist alive today. Bravo!
Brahms is elegant, sublime, yet tempestuous. He was the perfectionist who blended Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. Yet he is unique and unmatched. It’s not easy to play Brahms. I have a personal record of this piece played by the legendary maestro Heifetz, and it has been my all time favourite. Yet I was absorbed by the sheer depth of Perlman’s ability, he has been able to transport us to the depths of the consciousness. What an amazing and blissful performance!
What a wonderful performance! It's a pleasure to both hear and see Perlman perform. He looks like a man who quite genuinely enjoys what he does for a living. No small thing that. His playing is that of a great master.
I saw Mr. Perlman in recital in the 1980s in Spartanburg SC USA. It was a "community concert series" affair. His performance was excellent and he was without question the most gracious major artist I've ever seen. Instead of presenting himself as the superstar he really was, it was more like an old friend had dropped by your house to have fun making music. By the end of the evening, he had everyone in the palm of his hand.
This is the best performence of this piece of music I ever heard! How do you make the violin sound so delicate yet so exciting? I am not a professional musician but I know how difficult it is to play legato. Your playing is subtle yet strong without ever screaming the top notes. Bravo Mr. Pearlman. You are not a pearl, you are a music diamond
people dont apreciate how much of a virtuoso he was. he practiced three hours a day when almost every other violinist practiced 5 or more and he was still one if not the best violinist of his era
in perlman's master class he mentioned the importance of resting and practicing less but more efficient, he's also a compassionate teacher apart from his impeccable virtuosity
I have to disagree. Perlman was and is very respected as an artist. He is also considered by many, including me, to be one of the greatest violinists of all time. Also, Perlman has said that he practised around 3 to 4 hours a day, but that he'd practise more if he had an upcoming performance.
@@dannyboy2267 i think you misunderstood, i know very well how much he was acknowledged, all I'm saying Is people don't recognize that perlman is possibly the most virtuosic violinist of all time, as he practiced less than half the time they did, with greater results
Listening to this reminds me of just how great a musician and violinist mr. Perlman is I have forgotten just how great he is with his warmth of sound in personality he gives a unique and loving interpretation to this great concerto
I have to agree. I 'grew up' on Oistrakh for the Brahms, but this rendition is just stunning, just perfect for the sweet romanticism of Brahms; brings it to life. I also enjoy watching his face. It's funny how the faces in performances often seem to go with the music--not always, but here for sure; also Zimerman and others . .
The violin 🎻. The sweetest sound in the world--when played by an expert. The violin 🎻 the worst sound in the world--when played by a novice. Perlman Sound. Among the sweetest in the world 🌎! His violin 🎻 is one with him and it speaks to him with love 💕. Brahms/Perlman/his violin. The sweetest sounds in the world 🌎.
iconoclast Umami! Strange word. Had to look it up, so, to reply to your reply the answer is yes (I guess so). Whether you call it a violin 🎻 or a fiddle the sound imo is best described as sweet and Perlman/Bell are masters at bringing out the ‘sweetness’. Umami if you will. 😆 Lol.
iconoclast Thank you for educating me to a new word. That meant I had very good day since I went to bed smarter than when I woke up! Food Network? Nope. Don’t watch T.V. Btw, the violin, the sweetest sound. 💞🎻

MAGNIFICENT PERFORMANCE BY THE MASTER IN HIS GLORIOUS PRIME !! For years I have regarded Perlmans Performance with Barenboim And The Berlin Philharmonic as his Greatest Effort Pertaining to this piece, until I Recently Discovered this Vedeo, which Captures Perlman in his Prime at The Height of his Powers !! I was AMAZED at the Quality of the Sound of this Vintage Vedeo Considering its Age !! IS IT JUST ME, BUT DOESN'T THE YOUTHFUL PEARLMAN , RESEMBLE FRANZ SCHUBERT !!?, ( MAYBE ON STEROIDS !!? )..... Just A Passing Thought !!..
Happy tears. I have to listen to this today too. Ok, during this hard ”The corona age” that we are living now, and want to survive it, hopefully. Then perhaps it is also time to listen to the Bach Easter passions. But instead I also listened on youtube the Chaconne that Itzhak performed during a lunch concert. That performanse also bring happy tears to me, and in some way a hope for a bright future.
I know he is the best but that's not why i like to hear him so much. What i like is to see that he is trying to do his best at every moment. I know that from his face. I really love him.
A magic moment .. The Lomdon Phil will just play. They do so every week playing by rote , They can also easily play without a conductor.. But when they in the presence of a true maestro and a top notch conductor, somethimg magic happens. Bravo
16:48, If anyone thinks this melody, and this particular appereance of it in the piece(the third in all the 1st mov.) is maybe one of the most beatiful, emotional, lovely and exciting melodies of all times, and the best modulation, Thumbs Up!!!!!!
Just MAGNIFICENT! Brahms - Violin Concerto is a unique composition with the lucid definition of sublime music and style. It is interacting, passionate and overwhelmingly beautiful. I. Perlman plays an elaborate interpretation with hypnotic force. Once the Concerto stars one has to listen to the very end. MASTERFUL ORCHESTRA, CONDUCTOR & SOLOIST!
The cinsrant variable of typical Brahms is astonishing, miles apart from Beethowen, who is very harmonic and symetrical, but Brahms, someone else again! These composers are a delight to our souls, that for sure! Enjoy!! excelent interpretation on the violin! Well done indeed!
Se spune ca vioara este regina instrumentelor, Perlman este un rege al interpretarii acestui divin concert! Frumusetea sunetelor, sensibilitatea trairii interpretului, te transpun intr-o lume de vis! Multumesc, maestre, Dumnezeu sa va ocroteasca de-a pururi.❤❤❤❤❤
I remember a remark by Perlman... "It's easy for pianists to interpret music, as a violinist you are just desperately hoping to get to the end of the piece without sounding terrible".
The opening notes of the Second Movement (on the oboe) are written on my heart. The familiar motif always transports me to the heart of this concerto. Then, across the threshold, to the great beauty of Perlman on his violin.
Thank you for this lusciously rich performance of the wonderful Brahms. Perlman has always been entertaining and his enharmonics (as well as everything else) fabulous. The orchestra here was terrific too. Thank you.
Yes, a well tuned orchestra and master violinist is key to a successful performance. Teamwork works and two are matched by the response from the subscribers and the music community! Congratulations for this great work and interpretations from the performer and talented artist, Bravo!
Johannes Brahms - Concerto in D, Opus 77 1:17 1st movement - Allegro non troppo (D major) 25:26 2nd movement - Adagio (F major) 35:25 3rd movement - Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo vivace - Poco più presto (D major)
Even now, still amongst the greatest performances of this piece. Such an unconventional style, vibrato, left hand position, nowadays probably banned from all academies and conservatoires, by my goodness it worked for Perlman. Such rhythm, such dynamic playing and such a sweet sound on those top notes. When you think about it, every bit of his technique is unconventional. Quite a tight grip, low in the left hand "V". Huge thumb all over the place. Extraordinary reach to high positions without needing to get the whole hand up there. A very individual vibrato which sounds fabulous, etc, etc.
The reason for it “being banned from academies” is because now the teachers and professors want all students to sound the same. Perlman is one of the last of that old style of violin learning, where each violinist sounded different. Galamian is one of the reasons this has happened to many, and fortunately Perlman escaped the brunt of it, with DeLay helping him become the great violinist he is today.
He was around 37 here.....like he had mastered everything like twenty times.....by then you don't need to do things exactly like the first ten years....he IS doing things the classical way,he's not unconventional......he is probably the second best of all time.....he does everything the normal way.....I'm a retired soloist.....believe me he's just like the people of today.....i learned off of watching every video he EVER did....so inspiring......he's a top notch guy.....unlike heifetz....heifetz, was a taker.....Pearlman is a giver.....to bad heifetz was such a bullcrapper....so fake in front of the camera.....so good but also so bad.....

It's would be impossible not to have this committed to memory but who can perform it to begin with? Very few if any ! I love His total command. Mr . Perlman completely consumes this . He is consumed with the music gift that God gave him.
It always annoys me on these sites when people make stinging criticism of a performance in wildly general terms but never dare to offer exact details of why they disapprove and/or what the precise ''faults'' are in case they themselves are found wanting, Have the courage of your (own) convictions my friends ... share your wisdom with us!!

Totally agree. One of my favorite violinist
Itzhak Perlman lives up to all the hype. What a legend. Incredible piece of music, performed beautifully by this entire ensemble. Brilliant.
He loves his instrument and the music. And, we can tell.
Itzhak Perelman plays the violin with heart and soul it is love of music !
And he does it in an apparently natural, effortless way... almost too much!
scout?
You're right! Ahhh, so lovely!
Absolutely brilliant. I could listen to and watch him play all day. What a treasure.
Non ci sono parole per questo grande violinista esecuzione perfetta anche l’orchestra in piena sintonia con il solista un godimento l’ascolto bravi tutti.

Are you sure his surname is Felderman ? Isn't it Perlman ?
It's incredible how he produces such a sweet, yet powerful tone. Beautiful!
The best of the very best!!!! Perlman is a real gem, a real pearl !!!!!!
After all these years, this is still amazing!
No other word but Amazing,!
From 19:20 through the end of the first movement I can’t hold back the tears...Truly out of this world!!
This music is fabulous and he is wonderful. I saw him perform this 3 time and Issac Stern once, heaven.
Amen
I've said it before and I will always say it, I believe Itzhak is the greatest executive musician of all time (that we can hear).
Absolutely gorgeous rendition of the Brahms, I adore this man!
Without a doubt, one of the finest examples of this intense emotional masterpiece evoked here, spanning sweet tenderness to an omnipotent boldness, enabling every nuance and expression reach their highest heights.
This violin has amazing sound and the violinist gave an outstanding performance. Thank you
Of all the music I love, this is, indisputably, my favorite piece of music. I think this is the most beautiful violin concerto ever written, and here (accompanied by the great London Philharmonic orchestra) it is performed by perhaps the greatest violinist alive today. Bravo!
Am I dreaming? This is beautiful!
@James Jeffrey ok
You’re comment brought tears to me eyes; i felt the same way about this artistry...
What a wonderful piece of music! Brahms was a genius! Thanks be to GOD for letting him live among us lesser mortals.
Gosh, just think of it. We just watched a live recording from the 1900’s. So awesome.
Magnificent performance, and that particular violin responds to his playing in a way unmatched by others.
Это божественное звучание!Все страсти,чувства души человеческой:страдания и покой,взлом и торжество!Исхак Перельман -скрипач от Бога!Его скрипка-Душа!
This glorious concerto of Brahms played by beloved Itzhak Perlman brings unexpected tears to these old eyes. Thank you for this wonderful upload.
帕爾曼的演奏總是讓我又感動又佩服,可以如此輕鬆的玩小提琴,而發出最自在的天籟,大師,向您致敬!感恩上帝 把您賜給我們
Right there with you.
Not just old eyes, mate. The Brahms is the apotheosis of the concerto: it takes LvB and goes beyond.
He has the Brahmsian sound for sure.
To me, the third movement is simply otherworldly. Probably my favorite piece of music ever.
What a wonderful performance! It's a pleasure to both hear and see Perlman perform. He looks like a man who quite genuinely enjoys what he does for a living. No small thing that. His playing is that of a great master.

Какое Божественное исполнение!!!Душа переворачивается!!!
Mare Violonist!
people dont apreciate how much of a virtuoso he was. he practiced three hours a day when almost every other violinist practiced 5 or more and he was still one if not the best violinist of his era
in perlman's master class he mentioned the importance of resting and practicing less but more efficient, he's also a compassionate teacher apart from his impeccable virtuosity
@@nitelite4340 i rehearsal 20 hour per day... im not the 15% of this guy...
@@nitelite4340 I'm 9 months late to respond, but you're basically saying he had more talent than other violinists?
I can only agree!
I meant, agree to the original comment.
Sublime Itzhak !
Musica eccelsa

MAGNIFICENT PERFORMANCE BY THE MASTER IN HIS GLORIOUS PRIME !! For years I have regarded Perlmans Performance with Barenboim And The Berlin Philharmonic as his Greatest Effort Pertaining to this piece, until I Recently Discovered this Vedeo, which Captures Perlman in his Prime at The Height of his Powers !! I was AMAZED at the Quality of the Sound of this Vintage Vedeo Considering its Age !! IS IT JUST ME, BUT DOESN'T THE YOUTHFUL PEARLMAN , RESEMBLE FRANZ SCHUBERT !!?, ( MAYBE ON STEROIDS !!? ).....

I would have to agree with you. How can a human being even create such wonderful melody!
Who make dislikes? He's a best violinist of our time.
The cinsrant variable of typical Brahms is astonishing, miles apart from Beethowen, who is very harmonic and symetrical, but Brahms, someone else again! These composers are a delight to our souls, that for sure! Enjoy!! excelent interpretation on the violin! Well done indeed!
What an outstanding piece, and a glorious performance. I love this concerto so much. Thanks for sharing
What a wonderful performance!! Extreme of beutifullness and depth.
I understand what he means by it, but I don't think that's entirely correct. Nonetheless Perlman is my favourite violinist.
Love the look on the string sections faces
As a pianist, its not true. As soon as we play a note it starts dying away.. we have to work hard to make a nice phrase!
ann marie Fuller I think what Perlman meant are certain areas of violin playing like tone and intonation that piano playing doesn’t require
Jimin Kim yep. i'm a pianist and i cant imagine the nightmare of intonation
The opening notes of the Second Movement (on the oboe) are written on my heart. The familiar motif always transports me to the heart of this concerto. Then, across the threshold, to the great beauty of Perlman on his violin.
Devant tant de beauté nous ne pouvons qu'être bouleversés et nous incliner avec respect. Merci

Bello, stupendo.
The kindness in these comments is overwhelming. Thank you all!
Steven Gates who would you say is the first best? (Not arguing just honestly curious).
