Ok violinist here - I can honestly say this is complete mastery on the verge of perfection. His complete knowledge, not just of the piece but of his violin, is something that can only come from a lifetime of constant dedication.
The last movement demonstrates the level of command he has on his bow, knowing it so well I almost thought he would hit the nut, or its point, using full length to the millimetre.
The second movement shows his command of dynamics, and those repeated single upbow runs played so softly are controlled to a degree that although on the edge of perception it does not seem to be too soft, every time he plays that phrase it is identical.
But the first movement: How divine. Those octave shifts he does at the high register are perfectly in tune and shaped so well, that you forget your listening to a perfect piece and you are transported to another realm. That to me is a true testament of a great performance - the inescapable transcendence of all of us to a higher plane, something that combines the technical mastery with nothing short of magic.
In terms of recorded performances, would you wager this specific one to be one of the greatest violin solos of all time? This literally brought me to tears the first time i watched it.....
In spite of all that, I still prefer Joshua Bell's version.
If you think this is perfection, that is your opinion. However, the third movement is definitely not perfect. The thirds are not clean and the fast passages are not consistent. Before making a comment, you should look at all the parts.
one of those rare moments where the right soloist, the right conductor and the right orchestra come together to play the right piece
even the right violist
right :)

Gee, I wonder why...

I cant believe this guy can play so accurately with all that emotion and dancing and stuff what a legend!
Sibelius and Tchaikovsky have only one violin concerto each, and they're two of the most beautiful violin concertos ever.
suma a beethoven ;)
Dont forget Brahms, that one is still greater than Tchaikovsky’s in my opinion
They all are great it's just matter of taste
I don't personally enjoy the Tchaikovsky's. I think Sibelius's is the best, followed by Brahm's and Mendelssohn's
@@royal051093 Yes I don't enjoy Tchaikovsky's either. I would also put the Paganini concerto on the third spot together with Mendelssohn.
I went backstage after his performance of Sibelius violin concerto in d, in 1995 Dorothy chandler pavilion, and I asked him if was touring with a Stradivarius loaner from the Smithsonian institute, and said yes, and let me hold it , I was in awe, one of those surreal moments, a real Strad, great guy Maxim
Gotta be scary touring with a loaner violin, a museum piece.
@@Jaker788 He was touring with Two Strads, I just knew about the one from the Teldec catalog , and got the ticket from them with the meet and greet bonus.
Thank you for sharing what was a transcendental moment for you.
@@alejandrolagos1594 My oh my I heard Vengerov in Madrid in the early 2000s and I was too scared to try and meet him afterwards. I was in such awe. I am going to listen to him again in a couple of weeks in Madrid. I remember there was a lady in the public that offered him a floer bouquet (big bouquet). It could be me in a couple of weeks. I am lucky to be able to listen to him again.
I am 80 and have listened to this magnificent concerto for 60 years or more and this is the best I have heard
xØx
jd
I was a music critic-yes this is the best!
But ray Chen’s is so good too!
Having mainly been listening to Sibelius's symphonies till now (I think the 7th is the greatest piece of music ever written), this performance has really started to unfold the violin concerto for me. There is so much more here than I have appreciated before.
I may be u some day but i am still only 15
This is lovely to read
The people who attended this concert are so lucky. To hear Vengerov and the Chicago symphony absolutely own this performance of Sibelius, followed by an encore of Ysaye Sonata 3. Thank god we at least have both of those recordings
Vengerov is truly amazing, but he has been since he was 7 years old. This guy was playing the most difficult music you can imagine as a kid. Now he can sleep-play through it. He was out for while from a back injury, so I don't know how he plays now. But I saw him in Miami playing an entire hour and a half solo 15 years ago. Completely solo. No piano, nothing. I could not breath for the entire concert. Breath-taking. Then to find out he was playing all of that treacherous music when he was 12 years old. Sick!
I think Maxim Vergerov is my favourite violinist, of all. Such a great combination of sensitivity and strength. Seriousness, yet I feel a hunt of humour in it. And his humility... You really have to be at service of the music in this work. Which he very much is.
He is really from XXI siècle, absolutely modern
@@lada_bell Is that a good thing?
@@mattias5157 the best!!!
@@lada_bell OK... Not in my playbook, but we are all different and appreciate different things.
C’est vraiment ça la perle d’une puissance , d’une Rigueur , d’une beauté parfaite entre le compositeur , le soliste et l’acteur qui met tout en œuvre pour nous rendre heureux !
Vengerov is a Grand violonist.and the Chicago orchestra is quite divine. This concerto has a place deep in my heart, and everytime I think classical music,I think Sibelius violin concerto. There must be something to it that vibrates at the deepest of my soul.
Огромное Спасибо
Максиму Венгерову, за лучшую интерпритацию концерта Сибелиуса!
Браво!!!!❤❤❤
Possibly the greatest recording of sibelius ever
Oh YES!!! Brilliant Performance!!!

i would love it but that third movement is too oof
What a wonderful performance of J.Sibelius' violin concerto op.47 by the highly acclaimed violinist Maxim Vengerov with the outstanding Chicago Symphony Orchestre and the world-famous conductor D.Baremboin! I have always admired Vengerov for his musicality, virtuosity and his artistic seriousness.E.Woelfer
Vengerov is my musical crush. His playing is absolutely apotheosic, I love many violinists but when I first heard Vengerov's Ysaye Sonata i irremediably fell in love with his playing. Long live to this charming man
Agreed
my dad loves classical music and I was searching up concerts for christmas and booked him in London , I've never heard of him before and I've been watching his videos . wow he is amazing
Vengerov is one of the few musicians who, perhaps instinctively, uses Celibidache's phrasing. And he feels. He reaches the heart of the listener
I remember listening to this, without knowing Sibelius's nationality at the time, and thinking that it "sounded cold and snowy". Little did I know... Perfect mood for a fireplace and an ice storm outside! Genius!
Pedro Nuno Pulquério Vieira Maxim isn’t from the tropics either!
I honestly never got the impression of warm and snowy… just saw a rather sad story in my head, felt the emotions, but never any particular landscape. this tastes more like heartbreak than frostbite
I was shocked when I first saw it. I've listened to several violinists perform Sibelius's violin concerto, but this rendition is something different. Vengerov is definitely special.
I am really pleased that you appreciate my comment.I adore Maxim Vengerov.
The tone of this violin is fucking incredible. And it borders on miraculous that the strings (regardless of brand) can stay virtually completely in tune after such intense punishment under fingers and bow hair. Wow. And I am myself a violinist, and restorer of violin family instruments. This phenomenon never ceases to astound me.
1
I almost read it as "The tone of this violin is fucking terrible" and i almost had a heart attack
They don’t actually stay completely in tune. Soloists have to adapt in real time.
PepperMint lmao same
Vengerov's tone is always good, but this is really impressive. Sounds like it's pushing the mid-range frequencies. Kind of reminds me of the Soil Stradivarius, although that thing is in a league of its own.
The ABSOLUTE BEST RENDITION of any violin concerto ever!
What is amazing about Vengerov is his confidence. He is in full control of this magnificent piece. The music comes from inside him. Although obviously he has not written the piece yet one feels it is part of him, it comes from his soul. You can not expect more from a performer.
Comparing his playing to that of Chang or others does not make sense. Each of them has his (her) own ideas of interpreting this piece. I am lucky I can enjoy all of them.
Musical insanity at it's best, I would add.
Well said, George. This particular performance is electrifying and complete in every way, but each rendering by other artists has something of its own to offer..... what a level this particular one reaches though !
Superbly said Sir. Wholeheartedly agree.
Chang? Sara chang?
I love Sibelius. And have loved many of his works from 15 to 75. But today I finally "heard" and "understood" the violin concerto. I will follow Maxim Vengerov's playing for the rest of my life.

23:19 Love that part, when the soloist becomes one with the orchestra, that's simply wonderful.
But starting at 23:00
I love moments like these, too 👌
It helps that Vengerov is a generous performer, he's not afraid to let others shine through a piece
Блестяще. Какое понимание композитора. Одно из лучших исполнений Сибелиуса. ❤
i can't even begin to respect how much effort has been put into this playing
And incomprehensive, talent..
I love Maxim Vengerov, he seems so humble, and he's an excellent violinist.

I have been enjoying this concerto for the past 60 years. This version is among the most outstanding ones that I have heard. Vengerov is a colossal talent . I am surprised the poor violin survived the relentless onslaught from his nimble fingers.
I hope you get to enjoy it for far more years.
@@leonmorales5744 Thank you Sir very much.
I love the aggression of Vengerov in this piece. One of the best interpretations of Sibelius in existence.
Agreed! His and Oistrakh are my best 2 for this piece 💖
@@gimletrose1985 My favorite interpretations are Vengerov's and Heifetz's
@@andrewkatz5689
Heifetz one, to me, feels like less emotion... brilliant technically, of course, though I prefer Oistrakh's tone for Sibelius in particular.
I cannot unlisten to this. Everyone else's version pales in comparison. The emotional journey I went through with this piece cannot be replicated. How I wish I could be one of those people in the audience, listening to all of this live
What strikes me most is not his technique or his colors, but his sound. His sound is divine.

Before even stopping to consider interpretation of this searing, complex and heartfelt work - the level of assembled skill in this recording - soloist, orchestra and conductor; the hours of diligent work and years of collective experience focused on this performance simply astounds me; the sheer superabundant human achievement involved.

To me, this is the definite Sibelius Violin Concerto experience. No other performer could even match this, that vibrato beginning at 4:31 is just sublime..
I totally agree. May I recommend Brahms played by Vadim Repin. He also gives a definitive performance, I think.

Until you've heard Henryk Szeryng you've not heard the definitive recording of this piece.
I really do like this performer, but I really think Hilary Hahn did this better than him.
This is my favorite interpretation of any piece!! Vengerov has a very special way into making him my favorite solo violinist
Watched this several times in the past years and still can't take my eyes off him. Transcendent.
And I still can't believe they didn't give them a standing ovation!
After this performance, maybe their knees were too wobbly.
I know mine were after just watching on UA-cam.
Sibelius would have had chills, goosebumps and pride of his work. Maxim performance precisely exemplified the feelings and expressions of Sibelius during the solitude stage of life he chose at the time of composition and culmination to Mastery. It doesn't get any better than this 👌
Let's not also forget the amazing conductor and mature orchestra!
The violinist, the conductor and the orchestra, as they were playing, were living the passion and compassion of each of Sibelius' notes; and for this everyone was in their unique hypnotic internal state by which they produced for each of us the incredible wonder of this performance. BRAVO!
I thought the orchestra was too loud or the violin high notes too quite around 15:50. That's really the only problem I could find with the performance, and I guess it's subjective on my part.
a true virtuoso, an artist who feels the music and not only an interpreter who repeats scores by obligation
I literally am left breathless when I listen to this....Sibelius would have loved his interpretation... it is so beautiful its impossible to imagine the gorgeous sounds that come from Vengerovs heart and soul...
The last week I've been typing violin concerto into youtube, and watching every video that pops up. I hope to keep this up for the rest of my life.
Over one thousand people disliked this. You can dislike the music (how???) but can you not appreciate the decades of practicing 40 hours a day for this???
Every time I listen to this piece it sounds different, as if it was the first time I'm hearing and rediscovering it again. Wonderful.

Big names but no match to this. Oistrakh is of course very very good, but I've not heard good Heifetz version of Sibelius.
too romantic? but the piece was written in 1904. well, whatever. i'm willing to have a better listening-experience over a thematically fitting one that's jarring to listen to.
Disagree, the landscape you are referring to is lost due to the conducting, the orchestra "voice" is off, not Maxim's. But will check out the Heifetz, can't say I was that impressed by Chang, which I found rather emotionally flat.
Vengerov has always been and will forever be my favorite soloist by miles. He can create such intensity. Beautiful playing
