Ok now you have to check out their other big hit Rasputin. Featuring the legendary lyric "Ra ra Rasputin, Russia's greatest love machine". The 1970s was very strange . . . . 😂
We HAD to look him up to find out what happened, why they weren't as well known today... bad manager... but found he died in the SAME city as Rasputin on the SAME day of the year. RiP brother Farrell you're Awesome
@@youllis Boney M were massive in Europe, especially countries like Germany, France and Austria where they had endless strings of #1 hits, but they remained practically unknown in the US.
My Grandpa was a fan of Boney M. As kids he'd play their music for us and I still love them today. "Rasputin", "Rivers of Babylon", "Ma Baker" are all great. I requested "Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord" last year for Christmas, I'm requesting it again this year.
@@CasiodorusRex The women were actually singing. Frank Farian is the male voice computerized on the songs and Bobby Farrell is lip syncing. So yeah I know that but don't care. I LOOOVE their music.
Maybe it's fair to mention that they were mostly an engeniered group going so far that that guy Bobby was exclusively cast for his looks and moves - the deep singing voice is always producer Frank Farian himself ;) Made for a purpose, it was the hight of the Disco aera, and that it does really well.
Boney M had one of the biggest hits of all time in UK with a double A side Rivers of Babylon/Brown girl in the ring. Rivers is from Psalm 137 in book of psalms. So quite a contrast to Daddy Cool😀
"Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in thy sight..." Psalm 19:14. So it had two Psalms in it. They also had a Christmas song that was actually about the birth of Christ! And then they did some songs about bondage or something.
This was one of those records that were basically recorded purely for disco. Lyrics are not really necessary as the only thing that mattered was the beat. Many hits in the 70s were like that, I know I remember them especially when the girls used to get up to dance and put their handbags on the floor and dance around them whilst the guys looked on too scared to get up.
I am a german kid of the 70s and I totally remind this song - and how I thought this band was the ultimate beauty of mankind! Fun fact: Donna Summer spend some time in Germany in the 70s and she reminiscened in her autobiography that she conceived her own beauty there for the first time. I can understand that 😊
YES! Glad you are getting to Boney M. When I was a kid in the 70's my parents loved Boney M, played the records all the time. So it's a huge part of the soundtrack of my life. As an old adult myself now, I love Boney M more than my parents did in the 70's.
Club songs are often repetitive cause it's better to keep the same beat on the dance floor. I found out not long ago that one of their biggest classic, Rivers Of Babylon, was actually a cover of a Jamaican reggae group, The Melodians. It's such an amazing song, I'd love to see you react to both versions.
wasn't he also the voice? Fabian was a singer but he thought he was to ugly to make a career in showbusiness so he recorded the songs and hired actors to lipsing in the videos and in concerts
This is the beautiful thing about the late 60’s and early 70’s disco music. That was just another beast. Banger after banger. Not just Bonnie M but: ABBA, Beegees, etc. it was just another time back then. Beautiful ❤️❤️
I remember years ago when I first turned 18. Would git the local clubs and always remember this song coming on and looking around to see 6ft plus outlaw bikers nodding their heads to this whilst displaying physical prowess. Great song.
Yes Rasputin was the first Boney M song I saw. I hope Jamel sees this to know there is great lyrical content with Boney M as well. Not just the best dancing ever
Recently had a remix of that in the U.K. charts, which really wasn’t that different lol so you may have heard it on the radio more frequently the last few months too
A german production: Frank Farian, who was also responsible for things like "Milli Vanilli" My father played this song on every party in the begining of the 80ths This song is necessary, as every song to reflect the time
They were big in Europe with lots of hits, other songs would be Rivers Of Babylon, Ma Baker. Mary's Boy Child (with Christmas coming up), Brown Girl In The Ring & possibly their other most famous song Rasputin
OMG! I have never heard of this group until yesterday when someone posted one of their videos on Facebook. The first person I thought of that needed to react to that video was Jamel and lo and behold, here comes Jamel reacting to this obscure group
Jamel, I only got to Boney M several months ago. After watching one of your ABBA reviews, Boney M “Rasputin”came up. It is a bigger trip than Daddy Cool, but Daddy Cool, Rasputin and Ma Baker are all in my iTunes library now, thank you brother 😎🆒
Bobby Farrel was an dance ikon in Europe at that time. We loved him mooves, and the all Band. I am Europian middle aged woman, that times wen i was teenager. 🙂 🌺
Boney M were the Kings of Disco back in the day all their songs had you up dancing , still today i like nothing better when on a Sunday while cleaning the house have Boney M's Greatest Hits blasting in the background . Songs like " Sunny " , " Painter Man " , " No Woman No Cry " , " Ma Baker " ,
Omg I LOVE Boney M I just discovered them this year thanks to UA-cam putting them in a playlist with my band Foxzen 🦊 I love him I can't WAIT FOR your reactions do Rasputin and Ma Baker (Lady Gagas Bad Romance precursor?)
Omg Boney M were the best hands down!!!! I bet no one here could sit still to that💃🕺. Was that too much freaky deaky for you J?🤣🤣🤭. Rasputin is another gooden. I'm on the old as dirt spectrum, and still get up to boogie to the beat. Thanks Jamel, love you 💕🙆🏼♀️🇦🇺
I am happy for the air play for Boney M. I heard this for the first & only time in 1977 at a bar in Mombasa, Kenya drinking a "Tuskers" beer with an elephant on the label. Loved the song then which I took as a disco song. I have sung this to myself since from that super special memory my whole life until now. Mombasa is also where Van Owen got his from "Roland the headless Thompson gunner" by Warren Zevon.
Rasputin is a good video from Boney M also. They had many very popular songs. As Christmas nears Mary's Boy Child is a very good rendition done by them.
Your reaction has me doubled over in stitches !!!! Early Disco....yep that's about it -- all about the rhythm & the beat. As noted by others in the comments, Bobby Farrell not really doing any vocals, he's a bit rough around the edges but people loved him for his energy. Do check out videos of Rasputin being performed in Russia, Bobby even tuckers himself out with his high-energy moves. Rivers of Babylon is one of my all-time faves from this early disco-era group.
He was the first prince. This guy was such an original. He had so much energy. He was an excellent guest. Always very respectful and polite to the hosts.
You have to place yourself in the time this was produced: It's 1976, a good disco beat, simple lyrics, and simple choreography. When you put it in that context you can't help realize how brilliant this song and act really is.
Roberto Alfonso (Bobby) Farrell was a singer, dancer and DJ from San Nicholaas, Aruba! My home island! San Nicholaas is an oil town and had the largest oil refinery in the world during WW II! At age 15, Bobby became a seaman on one of the ships that called San Nicholaas port and ended up in the Netherlands first before moving to Germany and becoming part of the group Boney M together with Marcia Barrett and Maizie Williams. This reaction hits it close to home for me. Thank you whoever got you to watch this.
Great, fun group , not big in the The US except in the clubs, but huge around the world…he’s not singing though… and only one of the backup singers actually sang if I remember correctly.. you should watch Rasputin too.. it’s all about the visuals..
The producer was Frank Farian and that is HIS voice being lip-synced by dancing front man Bobby Farrell, who was a DJ spotted in a club by Farian. Farian is also the producer behind Milli Vanilli. Knowing the history of Boney M, it always blew my mind that people were shocked that Milli Vanilli didn't sing any of their hits.
I was a product of the 70's , if the doors to the disco were open, I was usually there to dance! However, I never heard of Boney M till about 2 or 3 years ago when it was a suggestion on UA-cam since I reminisce occasionally there. Found an article online that said they were well known in Europe, but not in the US.

Them wild crazy 70"s! It's the beat. Who pays attention to the lyrics!

Hmmmm, Frank Farian would never engineer a group and put out fake front men, right Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus ?
