The song was inspired by a real woman called Ma Barker and her sons, who were at the top of the most wanted in the 1930s. Ma Barker and her son Fred were killed after a 45 minutes gunfight by the FBI.
It's so cool to see people getting into Boney M in 2021! My aunt is actually one of the background singers (the woman with the braids!), the coolest aunt ever. Thank you for spreading the disco love and shedding light on such an important part on Black music history!
Bella, Liz Mitchell was just in my hometown of Toronto Canada last night and I had the privilege of being there. 70 years old and still killing it vocally. She didn’t sound much different than she did here in 1979. I am an ‘88 baby but my Dad had the Nightflight To Venus album on cassette tape. I wore it out as a kid and have loved Boney M since.
The guy in Boney M is such a great dancer. He was way ahead of his time dance/performance wise. He deserves more respect in dance and live performance ability. He makes them what they are
Boney M was actually a West German group because they were managed from West Germany. The musicians and performers in the group were all from different Caribbean nations. Their best song IMHO was ''Ra Ra Rasputin'' and I'd love to see this beautiful woman RogueRxyce react to it.
Boney M were German because they were Frank Farian's project. He played most of the stuff and did the male voice. The performers are good dancers, but only one of the ladies actually sang.
But he was never allowed to be heard: The first recording of Boney M had come out before there was a lineup. It was more or less a toy project by producer Frank Farian. When there was the first request of a TV station for "them" to appear on a show, he had to hurriedly get a lineup whose outer appearance would fit the music and the name of the band. All female members were after a while allowed to sing their parts themselves. The guys voice timbre was so different from Frank Farian's that his mic was always muted on live appearances, and instead Farian's studio recording was played in playback.
The guy was called "The king of disco" and he really was and about this song: It was inspired from a story of a woman which had 4 sons back in 30's, she robbed many banks and she finnally was killed with her sons, the producer (Frank Farian, It's a german producer) found this story interesting. Much Boney M. songs were inspired from true stories (Ma Baker, El Lute, Rasputin and much more) I hope those ideas helped you a little bit, I know what I'm talking about because I am a big fan of this group since I was a little kid. And a little fun fact: the "Ma Ma Ma Ma" from Lady Gaga's Poker Face was inspired from Ma Baker.
Boney M. was a Euro-Caribbean vocal group created by German record producer Frank Farian, who was the group's primary songwriter. Originally based in West Germany, the four original members of the group's official line-up were Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett from Jamaica, Maizie Williams from Montserrat and Bobby Farrell, a performing artist from Aruba. The group was formed in 1976 and achieved popularity during the disco era of the late 1970s. Since the 1980s, various line-ups of the band have performed with different personnel. The band has sold around 80 million records worldwide and is known for international hits including "Daddy Cool", "Ma Baker", "Belfast", "Sunny", "Rasputin", "Mary's Boy Child - Oh My Lord" and "Rivers of Babylon".[3
Frank Farian is also the producer behind 'Milli Vanilli', where he also employed lip-syncing dancers to front the act. Personally, I don't mind that he used models and dancers to front the groups, while the real talent behind the music was in the studio. But it sucks for anyone who bought into the stage performers as being the real talent behind the music, when they had very little do to with the creation of these tracks.
we have a friend called Mark Baker. When we went to a club and this song came on, we would sing "Ma Ma Ma Ma - Mark Baker!" hilarity ensued, and for me, this NEVER got old.
The whole Sopot Festival with Boney M is really really good. You should check out some more of their songs they preformed on that festival. Great reaction RIP Bobby Farrell (the dancer)
boney m was created by frank farian, a german producer who also produced milli vanilli. the dancer Bobby Farrell only moved his lips to the voice of frank farian ... like with millil vanilli ;)
Hi, my dear - fact is that the "lead singer" Bobby Farell never sang a note in ANY song, in ANY video - a gifted dancer, but otherwise.... . That was done by the producer and creator of Boney M. Frank Farian (a German genius) himself. He has been famous and infamous with another group "Milli Vanilli" - the two singers and dancers were also absolutely voiceless in every performance - sung by studio musicians of Frank Farian's grace. That is FACT !!! The girls of the band Boney M. are all however real singers, especially the lady with the slight scar on her face (Maicy) is still on tour today and meanwhile also a bit older! But still good!
Still a vibe even after four decades. Grew up to this. Thanks for the nostalgic memories. You can checkout their other songs too - Daddy Cool and Rasputin.
This was also a Movie starring Shelley Winters and Robert DeNiro when he was starting out. Boney M were very big in the Discos All Over The World. Another Song that was popular for them was their Version of "Sunny" you may have heard in Boogie Nights.
Finally, a subject I know something about (outside of nigerian music or afrobeats like they call it). The guy in the group is bobby farrell. sadly he died 11 years ago. i loved listening to boneyM while growing up. 1. strange fact- the guy never sings the words, he only mimes. several other guys have played the 'male' role since the passing of bobby. 2. fun fact - they have the jolliest and most popular christmas songs ever. 3. secret fact - used to crush on one of the ladies - liz mitchell.

Frank Farian, producer of the group, recorded the male parts on the songs in the studio; 3) i still love their hits, it brings me back my childhood.
Of course it isn't live, because of two reasons: 1) Boney M weren't performing live. They were a studio group and their "live" performances were usually lip-synced. 2) All guest stars at Sopot Festival did lip sync, because they usually were coming for a very short period to do the performance (sometimes even just a few hours, they arrived shortly before the performance and left shortly after) and there was no time to do any rehearsals - also it was easier for the television (who was the main organizer of this festival).

Yes, as a german kid in the 90`s i grew up with boney m through my parents. Now it has nostalgic value for me.

The dancer is Bobby Farrell born on Aruba. He sinc-ed all his notes to the "owner" of Boney M the singer Frank Farian from Germany.
The "mamamama" verse was used in Lady Gaga's "Poker Face "!!!love it ❤️
Ma Baker and her family existed and was part of the Gangster era of the 30's along with Bonnie & Clyde, John Dillinger and Al Capone.
