Twilight Zone Cartoon Hell

- You should see the beautiful cels that were painted for this cartoon hell sequence in the movie TWILIGHT ZONE. The girl in the parochial school uniform is Nancy Cartwright, voice of Bart Simpson! This segment was directed by Joe Dante.
Techincally, she's still trapped in TV Land. Ethel is played by Nancy Cartwright, who has spent the last 20-plus years as the voice of Bart Simpson.
She's stuck in a show that never ends and predicts the future
That sequence creeped me out so much when I was a kid, equally loved it. Still the best cartoon Hell I've ever seen.
Thanks, Brockton.
That is EXACTLY how I felt. I loved it and was terrified at the same time.
I watched this movie a few weeks ago with my mom and as soon as this scene came on, my mom asked, “Hey, this looks like that Island of Emotion Sesame Street cartoon you used to love when you were little!” and sure enough, that quick Google search lead me to you! I just wanted to say we LOVE your animation style! ( P. S. The Island of Emotion still sticks with me today even at 26!) 😅
Wow your mom has a great eye and memory!
This is a fantastic sequence!! I love the animation and creature designs. Especially how surreal, cartoony yet quite disturbing they are. Amazing work.
Thanks thanks thanks!
Nancy Cartwright never got out of Cartoonland. She's still there.
@Christopher Cipollini The joke flew over your head
She’s being playing the role in some of the cartoons that are made in the 80s and 90s such as The Simpsons, Animaniacs and Rugrats.
Yeah; In Springfield!!!
P.S. That was a Reference to her being Bart Simpson's Voice actress on The Simpsons!
Hard to believe Bart's getting his comeuppance for his Treehouse of Horror stunts here.
Those fire monsters are so perfectly horrifying, I figure whoever worked on the story board for this was an absolute genius.
Well that's such a compliment, thank you Mr. Stinko!
Sally Cruikshank I mean it very sincerely! Extremely fascinating! To me this looks and flows just like a bad dream.
I was wondering, did you intend the blue monsters that appeared at 0:15 to transform into those fire monsters? I got the impression everything contained in that cartoon somehow remained intact, its just that everything was transforming like crazy.
PS: I would KILL to see the original cells of that! Even with the fact that it is filmed from a tv screen, and then has the awful compression here added to it, your work is beautiful! My absolute favorite part is the animation of Nancy popping into 'reality'. Best collection on youtube!
We've been expecting you.
Nelson: Ha ha!
do you have an a complete list of the animation crew for this segment including inkers, painters, camera operators, checkers, etc.
THE HALLOWEENIES!!
Joe Dante's Inferno
rokurokubi much random
Yes Fucking Mark Zuckerberg and Susan Wojcicki That What The Cocksucker Going in my Cartoon and Anime of Hell Were I Battle Like Doom Slayer Fuck Yeah
The irony of _The Simpsons_ paying homage to TZ's "It's a Good Life" during one of their Halloween episodes, with Nancy Cartwright's character in the Anthony role, is most definitely *not* lost on me. _(grins)_
Yep, I thought the same when I saw that. That's just brilliance on a cosmic level.
Da Rat Bastid Now she's still stuck in cartoons
This is the Nostalgia Critic's "Mindfucks in cartoons" list all in one!
I'm amazed how sharp your eyes are, and others like you, who can pick out my style even while going back over childhood memories.
Yellow Subarine was before my time. I remember seeing the animation cels for sale at B. Altman's for $25 each.
"You did a real good thing, Sally, a REAL good thing!"
Sorry, couldn't resist!
Saw this when I was 8 years old and boy did it scare me. That said, I really love how you captured that old surreal and often times nightmarish Fleischer Bros vibe in this and how wonderfully fun your other animations are. Thanks for sharing it! I'm surprised I don't see see the opening to "Lover Boy" or "Mad House" on your site also!
Some studios don't care if you post titles, others get panties in wad and want titles removed. Copyright paranoia.
Ohhh man...I remember this! I was five, and I got up super early to watch Saturday morning cartoons, and turned this on by mistake. My parents were a little late in catching me, and I had nightmares for weeks!
That scared the shit out of me as a kid!
SAME
god, I love you, I saw your cartoons on the early version and A&E when I was a kid and was amazed, if maybe a little disturbed, by them, but I never forgot them and then stumbled onto your stuff again recently, you are a wonderful artist and a huge impact on my life.
My brain has now stored these images away for future nightmares. When this movie was released, I'm sure the same thing happened to hundreds of thousands of other unwitting victims.
THANKS SAL. THANKS A LOT! >:O
Disturbing as a kid, and still disturbing. And that's why it's good. If horror doesn't make you feel like you're in a waking nightmare it's just torture porn.
Cool statement will have to remember this one
Why torture porn? Couldn't it just be shit horror lol?
I designed and directed the animation. Mark Kausler was the actual animator. Glad you've enjoyed it.
Definitely one of my favourite stories, I like how she takes the kid away at the end to mentor him...interesting ideas...
In a Treehouse of Horror segment Bart has Anthony's powers, so in a way it came full circle.
That's kind of wild.
This scene scared the hell out of me as a kid, but was so deliciously twisted that I kept having to watch it on my old burned out VHS copy! Your work's been a huge influence on mine, Sally. Thanks for the inspiration (and nightmares :-) )
You did an excellent job, I saw this as a kid and it always stayed with me. This was a film with a troubled history to say the least, but "It's a Good Life" (apart from the rather incongruous ending) still holds up. Thanks Sally.
+wickedfeylady thanks wickedfeylady.
Great work! Decades later, this is the segment I still remember from "Twilight Zone The Movie".
i actually liked the "it's a good life" part of the Twilight Zone movie, but this part was a bit disturbing
Hmmm....reminds me of some of the vacations I had back in the 70's. LOL. Thanks for posting.
I don't know about you, if there was a hell I wouldn't be fond of going there...unless it's a Cartoon Hell. Like this. Looks freaking awesome to me!
And you, Sally, are awesome too along with the rest of the animators of this. This is such incredible work! Now I feel like seeing this movie...
Man, this video is amazing!! This one TZ story has always been my favorite. You rarely see cartoons actually be very scary! I mean this is really freaky stuff! It's so well done! Really amazing job on this! The designs and animation are amazing. Love the scary sad faces on the the fire people in the background. So creepy! I love it! I really wish I could see those painted cels. Those would be fun to see.
I remember seeing this when I was, like, 8 years old and it scared the HELL out of me!!! It's creepy as hell! Almost makes suicidemouse.avi look like Maple Town...
That great kid Jeremy Licht was Superb in this film, quite talented and handsome as well!
Yes I agree.
You did an amazing work and i love this movie.. All of you artists who gaved life to this movie are an inspiration. Thanks !!
It's ironic how Nancy Cartwright (playing Ethel here) would go on later to technically play the role of Anthony, as Bart Simpson in a 'Treehouse of Horror' episode from 'The Simpsons'.
Thanks, Eric. You should rent it. One of the episodes, directed by George Miller, is stunningly scary.
Can't believe that's Nancy Cartwright there. She went onto bigger fame and fortune as the voice of Bart Simpson on the tv series the Simpsons fame. Still going strong. Now in it's 28th season. This was my favorite segments of the movie. Great special effects.
@Treyworld Sort of. There was one episode of Treehouse of Horrors where they actually did a parody more of the original Twilight Zone episode, with Bart as the boy with the freaky powers.
not guy... gal...me. I designed and directed it, and still have many gorgeous cels from it, but it was produced at a regular animation house which Sam Cornell ran but I forget the name of the company now, and major talent Mark Kausler did the actual animation.
Soo cool that you came to this video! This creeped me out as a kid!!!
@Anonymous Empire well you could say she was trapped in cartoonland forever because she became the voice of Bart Simpson.
I always thought that Kevin McCarthy deserved an Oscar, or at least a nomination, for playing Uncle Walt. It was over the top in a good way.
He was a fine actor. His sister was a great writer as well. By the way, the obnoxious ad on front end of this video doesn't benefit me, just youtube grabbing more $
Yup, The Simpsons later spoofed this story, with Nancy Cartwright getting some retroactive revenge. In a Halloween episode, Bart got to be Anthony.
Nah! Ethel was later revived as Bart Simpsons!
Reminds me of the stop motion Spongebob Halloween special with the traditionally animated sequences that you directed where the Flying Dutchman enters Spongebob's brain
Sharp eye there Meg!
@@sallycruikshank Thanks.😉 You should upload the clips from the Spongebob Halloween special that you directed the animated sequences with.😃
@@megspitzer9406 Maybe someone else will.
One day I want to own an animation cel from this. It’s a true work of art.
Holy shit Sal, you did this? My childhood . . . holy shit, awesome =D
Thanks. The animator was Mark Kausler, want to make that clear.
WOW you probably scared a lot of kids with this one!!! Looks GREAT
@justin19822 It's "Twilight Zone: the Movie" from 1982 and this is from the third segment.
This movie was on the other night, and I noticed something I hadn't before when I was watching this. Right before Anthony sends Ethel into the Cartoon Hell, as she's confronting him, the TV in the living room is playing a cartoon as usual. I may have to get the movie on DVD to confirm this, but the cartoon shown right before this looked like the Anita and Quasi cartoon, "Make Me Psychic." From what I could see, it was the scene where Snozz sings his love for Anita, dancing with the lamp.
I had to have remembered seeing this in theaters.
That's neat. You should watch the whole movie. One of the other episodes, with a monster on top of an airplane, is also very good and scary.
It's called Nightmare at 20,000 Feet. And everytime I see this I think of Ralph Bakshi's work.
One of the most awesome and underrated death scenes ever.
Hello Sally, it's been a while. I'm watching this very movie right now with my cat Jack. It has been a tradition of watching Twilight Zone with my cats. Also I was in Disneyland last week and I finally went on "The Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror" after a friend took me on it.
Thanks. Yeah, I should have figured that out from all the comments about Twilight Zone the movie.
Think about that for a moment, Bart Simpson in the nightmare from Brave Little Toaster.
haven't seen that episode since I was a kid.80's twighlight at it's best.right up there with the john lithgow plane episode. His family thought him a freak and were afraid of what he could do and it hurt and angered him.he knew he wasn't loved and thought a monster.they were trying to leave him so he trapped them.a kid with major abandonment issues.very good.twighlight zone, outerlimits amazing stories, errie indiana were the shows to watch when t.v was actually entertaining.
Death by cartoon. He killed Bart Simpson.
Ethel died and was reincarnated as Bart Simpson years later. Ethel is still living a happy life in The Simpsons land as Bart.
@laughingsal, seriously? That cartoon scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. Seriously remembered that since then.
Scared the crap out of me when I was a lad, and still scares the crap out of me now. But still, awesome animation is spectacular.
@SpamNapkin Good way to put it! They would run that show as early as 7PM I can recall.
This is the "It's a Good Life" segment of the compilation movie, "Twilight Zone: the Movie". I think it's 1982.
Classic Pre-Gremlins Joe Dante. This and his movie The Howling were probably his biggest claims to fame.
Still makes my blood run cold...
At the end though he undose all his evil, she gets to live, and gose back to where ever she want to be
What part of "Twilight Zone Cartoon Hell" sounds suitable for younger viewers? Did you just see the word "Cartoon" and figure it must be Smurf-tastic?
Awesome clip, awesome animation. I also love Sally Cruikshank's "Face Like A Frog."
The faced moons floating over the corridor of fangs with the ghoulie things sneaking around until they are discovered is my favorite part.
I love your description of this.
@@sallycruikshank Thanks, just realized you are the author, sorry!
Another thing I like a lot it's the room where she appears, as it shows the cartoons working in a fake scenario that it's easily removable, but those hints were already in the background since the beggining.
That scene was the most scary scene in this movie!!
The most disturbing too. I thought so when I saw it at a theater at age 12, and I still think so at 48. And I often use this episode of the film to teach about the danger of having too much power.
I still consider this segment as being equal to that of Miller's, if not better, just for the sheer creativity of it all (the demon rabbit, the cartoon monsters, "cartoon hell")...
This scared the crap out of me when I was little.
well that's true and it's amazing that you could spot that.
@TsunogaiDanshaku - Actually, the cartoon itself was animated by Sally Cruikshank. If you like it, you should check out her cartoon "Don't Go In The Basement". Good stuff with music by Danny Elfman of Oingo Boingo.
Not so much other than it was the first animated film to use wild color. Until vhs and dvds were prevalent, Yellow Submarine wasnt seen after its initial release (which I did see as a teen.)
Nelson: Ha ha!
when i saw this movie on HBO in the mid 90s i never knew that the lady who played Ethel did the voice of Bart Simpson from The Simpsons. if wasnt for you Ms. Cruikshank and Mr Dante who directed this segment, she wouldnt do the voice of Bart Simpson and its a shame Homer didnt save his son's Bart's life in this scene he hates him and he always chokes Bart when he loses his temper
that's pretty bad ass...great job
fun fact- the girl in the cartoon is Nancy Cartwright a.k.a the voice of Bart Simpson
And more fun fact, they made this segment in a "Tree house of Horror" episode with Bart as the one with this power.
And one more fun fact, WE ALREADY KNOW
@@Tusc9969 not everyone, smartass.
That was sweet! And thanx for the vid info.
Holy crap,
brilliant.
This scared the heck out of me when I was little. Been terrified of cartoon vore ever since. XD
And Bart was "the kid with all the gnarly powers" in an episode of The Simpsons, too.
@laughingsal nice animation i watched this movie when i was 8 years old xD 11 years aggo the rabbit scene and the animation scared the hell out of me :P i study the 3d animation for a year now
Love this but I remember it very differently.. For some reason, the cartoon was black and white and the wolf just became a larger wolf with large teeth and simply ate her..
This is the best part of this movie
WOW!!!!
THIS WAS BART SIMPSON'S VOICE ACTRESS!!
Yep!
thanks.
I remember this scene!
Twilight Zone essentially prophesied Nancy Cartwright's future career lol
Really? well you both did
an outstanding job on it,
parts of that toon remind me of some of the early 1930s pre Hays Code
Max Fleischer and U.B. Werks cartoons, especially
Max Fleischer's 'Swing You Sinners'.
wow, thank you very much.
@JackrabbitMcGee Thanks for your thoughtful comments. These cels are actually the best of any of the work I've done. They were hand inked in color lines by a pro, Mary Cain, who started working in the 1930's!
The new Twilight Zone may not have taken off, but I bet it was a thrill contributing to it.
This scene plagued my nightmares for years & I just had a nightmare about it. That Gator Devil is chasing me like Jason from the Halloween movies. I can't run fast or scream loud enough.. It's like someone muted me. ⚰🌼⚘🌱
That's an awful thing to keep appearing in your dreams.
I know exactly what you mean. This is an amazing moment in a really amazing sequence, but it's also haunted my nightmares forever (I've only been able to watch the movie twice - back in 1989 and also about 9 years ago).
I also just now woke up from a nightmare involving this scene, but it wasn't me who was the victim. In my dream, instead of Anthony, it was an older family member who used to threaten and be mean to my pet, who was always really sweet, just to upset me many years ago. In my dream, said family member had brought my pet back to life in "cartoonland" and making me watch the TV as on the screen my pet was the one being chased by all those monsters, he could see me through the TV screen and was frantically whimpering and crying trying to get to the screen to me trying to get out. I kept crying and yelling at the family member, "Stop it! Let him out!" and she was just laughing like a maniac enjoying every minute of it.
I just now pulled this scene up while I woke up in a panic and ended up automatically pulling this up and rewatching it because I was still half asleep trying to show myself that it was only a dream and never happened.
Shit, she got sent to Cool World.
PLAY WITH MEEEE
This always scared the crap outta me.
@asjmorris I never imagined this sequence had such a weird effect on those who viewed it. Good luck in the future and no nightmares.
This "It's a Good Life" segment of the TZ Movie was my favorite of the anthology. I had seen "Quasi at the Quackadero" screened at my college (Trinity University) so I was deligheted to se your credit as the animator for that bit.
Definitely the work of Joe Dante, a man with a twisted cartoon mind. lol
Small Soldiers.
The best point in the entire movie.
this still disturbs me to this day😧
I loved the Fire demons so much,I got one tatted on my arm. God bless you Sally Cruikshank!!
wow, that's K-razy! Cheers!
I hadnt seen this movie since I was around 16...wow this scene is crazy! The concept is so twisted, but its brilliant. Are their anymore twisted animations similiar to this?
Th-th-that's all Ethel......the girl in the cartoon...is the actress who voices Bart Simpson by the way .....
definitely looks like him!
Kathleen Quinlan was terrified the whole time!
