I so remember staying up to see this! I was so proud to see them on Apollo! I knew alot of black girls like me being in love with them and their music! Playing at lunch in high school and blasting the radio everytime they came on! I got on all my relatives' nerves with my love for new kids on the block!lol!
I heard in an interview that Jordan and Donnie burst into tears back stage after this performance because they were so happy to be received so well by the audience.
Eccentricka1 i remember joey saying they did all have tears of joy cause it was the first time they we re seen and they we re received well by the apollo harlem crowd which is rough they ll boo you too no end if you suck they worked hard through record companies rejecting them first album flopping they finally made it this was an accomplishment for them
@@michaelbull4639 this wasn't the first time they were seen they had already performed at the Apollo once or twice before this. Please don't go girl was when the Apollo really appreciated them for the first time
Jordan always had the best foot moves and always all over the stage doing steps. They still can dance like that and still look great! Just saw them 1 week ago. Amazing experience. I do it all over again!
New Kids On The Block = Best White Boy Band EVER!! No ONE has ever lived up to their level. Granted...many after them may have sold millions of albums and had a plethora of fan base...but w/out NKOTB...there would be no Backstreet Boys, N' Sync, 5ive, 98 degrees etc. I STILL love them to this day. To have the longevity that New Kids have and STILL be in the biz...outstanding. Them boys turned the Apollo out that night. Even lil' Joey w/Please Don't Go Girl. The White Jackson 5!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree. The Apollo's NO JOKE. If it's less than perfect they'll tear you to peices. And the killed it, you could hear the crowd jammin but when they did their tribute to The Time everybody went KRAZZY!!!! :)~
Donny whalberg referenced this performance in his interview with sway a lot people don t realize this was there first performance where they we re actually seen singing and dancing at the time thier second album hanging tough just came out and thier first album was a flop here they we re finally gaining success
I remember seeing this. I didn’t know very much about NKOTB at the time but I watched Showtime at The Apollo regularly. When I saw they were a white boy band I immediately thought the crowd was going to eat them alive. The Apollo crowd was tough and didn’t hold anything back if they didn’t like you. I was astonished to see them win the crowd over and the crowd go nuts. Truly a special moment watching this. When they sang “Please Don’t Go Girl” they just brought the house down. What a great memory and moment in time.
The Apollo Audience is one of the toughest audiences to win over. They will let you know in a heartbeat if they love you. The fact the audience was chanting "Go White Boys Go", that crowd warmed up to them. Go back and also look at their performance of "Please Don't Go Girl on the same show. They ROCKED the Apollo that night.
Brings back memories with a smile, and although the Time and Morris did that step better, they truly killed it at this performance which made them as a group ALL kids enjoyed white AND black alike.
PLEASE BRING BACK THIS DANCE ROUTINE FOR THE MAIN EVENT THIS COMING JUNE! There's so much more bounce! Can't wait to see yall either way. Love you Jordan and Joey muahhhhh.
i mean to give a few examples they sold 35 million records in 2 years, they did the superbowl halftime show, they had a coca cola commercial, they were just everywhere. some compared them to the beatles, not comparing talent lol, but the hype and crazy fans.
***** Fair enough, but why can't we see beyond the person's colour and just appreciate the music no matter who sings it? I'm black, and I usually get somewhat offended when people tell me "We didn't expect that!" (I used to sing classical, and people can scream "Bounty!" all they want, but it's the voice I was blessed with). Do people really expect me to sing R&B alone just because I'm black? Years ago, Ebony magazine did an article which asked if whites were stealing black music, and NKOTB were targeted, which was ridiculous. Music is a universal language, and the dancefloor is big enough for all of us - we should all bloody deal with it.
In the late 80s, at the height of New Kid mania, I would say that yes, indeed they were bigger than Madonna and MJ. Of course those two went on to be more of a legendary status, but in terms of pure popularity at the time, no one was in the same league as NKOTB.(and no one got as much hate either)
NKOTB was huge but Madonna had already won people's respect and hearts before NKOTB got up to bat so no comparison there - Madonna was HUGE in the early 80's. MJ was HUGE - in fact they are the influence behind NKOTB's success. I would even say previous boy bands such as New Edition and Menudo helped to create the phenomenon not to mention the original Boy Band that could also play instruments The Beatles.
I love what Drew Lachey said in a recent interview. He said that If New Kids on the Block and Boyz II Men would make a baby the baby would be 98 degrees. LOL!!! Basically he meant that because of NKOTB and BIIM and all of their success 98 degrees came about and became a big thing.
i'm not comparing music styles or anything like that. just that back in mid and late 80s nkotb were huge. new kid mania lol. they had a lot of success, equal to or more than madonna. difference was that then they died out for a long time and madonna kept going. they had their own cartoon lol that's how big they were, they were everywhere.
Yeah, you could be right. There is different info. depending on where you look. One source says they did the Apollo in 88 while still recording Hangin' Tough but another source says it was in 89.
Most of this is true..BUT they actually were not lip synching. This video is a playback with the track put over because the quality was absolutely horrible. The guys actually really did sing live that night.
Hello! :) I enjoy this old footage of NKOTB, but the other video from the same show at the Apollo with the song "Please don't go girl" has recently turned to unavailble because of some copyright issues with SME or something. But I wonder why is this video still available then? Not that I want it to be obviously. I would really like to see the other video again, if possible in any way :) Greeting from denmark
@StarGlitter16 Of course. The Appolo Theater crowd is a really tough crowd and if you don't give them what it is that they want they'll walk out on you.
Dear British0Pixie, As Donnie said some places wont let you sing live. And as for them lip syncing, you can search youtube and find performances where they are most Def NOT. As for the dancing. Jordan did most of the moves. As for the awards they earned them like everyone else in the music industry. These boys worked their asses off and they are doing a kick as job even to this very day. If you don't like thes 5 boys from Bean Town Stay away From Videos pertaining to them. Easy i think.
well to be fair, So did MC Hammer, Kid N' Play, Jordan/ Gretzk and two more sports stars, if you asked NBC For a cartoon back in the 80- early 90's, you got one.
I always thought the same thing. When they are dancing away like that hearing them sing all out of breath just doesn't sound right. I'd much rather hear lip synching. Anyhow, they weren't even lip synching that night. This is a play back track bc the audio was horrible.
@tazloon Well obviously you've been looking in the wrong places...I found this about 2 years ago. Don't you know if you want to find lost clips...UA-cam is most def. the place to go. HAHA!! Huge NKOTB fan here...and I'm Black!! Fuck the sterotypes!! WTF color has to do w/it...ya know?! LOL!
Madonna? I mean I was born in 1993 so that wasnt my era lol but Im sure that MJ was the biggest male pop star of that time and Madonna was the biggest female star of that time. So how did they compare to Madonna..
Whether its lip singing or not, who cares? Really why is it such a big deal? They're awsome, their music is awesome, ever heard of britteny spears? THAT'S lip singing!

I heard in an interview that Jordan and Donnie burst into tears back stage after this performance because they were so happy to be received so well by the audience.
Aww, bless! I can totally understand why they reacted like that, though - Apollo audiences are really hard to please.

Talking about crossover. This the best thing I've seen. They are still my favorite
Steven Moore they killed it!
New Edition's manager bet himself that he could recreate a white New Edition. They ain't NE but they were a hit.
They had crazy energy!!!!!
Was in high school, and I watched it the day it aired. One of those unforgettable performances.
I remember this performance like it was yesterday and I really enjoyed it!
Still love these guys to this day!! Have LOVED them since I was 13, and I am 37 now! :) Thank you for this!

Damn 3:25 onwards Jordan was getting doooooooown
I don't give a fuck what anyone would ever say. These were some bad ass white boys back in the day
Actually, the reason he said was b/c he was giving a clue that there are plans for a NKOTB, BIIM and 98 Degrees tour.
dont know about mj but they were bigger than madonna, they were really really big in the late 80's it was crazy lol
natalie yates no one was bigger than MJ back then.
Real Nigga Shit! Boston goes hard. The white New Edition.
well to be fair, So did MC Hammer, Kid N' Play, Jordan/ Gretzk and two more sports stars, if you asked NBC For a cartoon back in the 80- early 90's, you got one.
Go white boys
Fit as....
All artists/groups with heavy choreography lip synced back then...but Milli Vanilli killed that 4 everyone, since then it was sing live or GO HOME !
God!!
It was 88' actually

yes! you can hear go white boys lol They should come to south americaaaa pleaseeeeeeeeee
Coño se oyen mas los pasos del baile que "la voz"
Madonna? I mean I was born in 1993 so that wasnt my era lol but Im sure that MJ was the biggest male pop star of that time and Madonna was the biggest female star of that time. So how did they compare to Madonna..
lol... Not once does Jordan make eye contact with anyone in the audience in this performance.
Whether its lip singing or not, who cares? Really why is it such a big deal? They're awsome, their music is awesome, ever heard of britteny spears? THAT'S lip singing!
Maddi Connolly I think they have to lip. No way you can dance like that for five minutes and sing live without sounding terrible.
Did people actually pay real money for this???
this was lyp synced its sound just like the CD.
Ok, if you don't like a video... THEN DON'T WATCH IT! Simple As That......
0c
Seems lip synced to me.
Without Ew Edition
Lipsync
Lip Syncing
Lip synched performance
I hate to say this, and may get shit for it but they're lip syncing. Sorry!!!!
Obviously lol and people do it all the time so no big deal c:
You try singing and dancing live like that. Michael Jackson did it ALL THE TIME as well.
Yeah lip syncing on the Apollo was rare, but they did it in fear of getting booed, because Donny voice is horrible, he was never a real singer
Yet Pink can do aerial acrobatics while singing flawlessly....
the_kid from_cali You talking to me?
