Here we are folks. We've had some time since our press launch to sit on our experience and really think about how we feel about the Sportster S. In this review we go over all the aspects of the bike that I think you guys need to know about it. Personally, my main take away is that HD has now found a way to get my attention to their brand and I'm VERY excited to see the direction they take the company moving forward!

This is the 1st Harley I have ever actually likes. It’s almost as if they woke up and realized they need to get with the times and stop making bikes with ancient technology….. This is a Harley I actually want to own. Well done Harley well done. I hope they go this direction with all of their bikes moving forward.

Great honest non biased review. I've owned the bike for a couple of weeks now limited riding with the PA winter weather but have almost 100 miles on her now. Been riding Harleys and cruisers my whole life and I have to tell you, this thing has a weird seating position with the forward controls. I have the mids on order can't wait to get rid of these forward controls. Our roads are pretty decent around here and I'm used to sportster stiff suspension so the ride doesn't bother me. The power is amazing love the bike wish it had some sort of storage compartment though to keep the paper work. I'll be adding the tail bag, engine guard, and wind screen to make her my own. Thanks for the review love your channel.

I've always been a harley fan boy. I don't care about cutting up corners or going fast. It's about the classic look and engine sound. Very raw feeling bikes. I'm Glad they introduced this bike for guys like you but I'm sad they are discontinuing the old sportster. The Evo engine was the last classic harley motor with that awesome sound. I've always said it's more fun to drive slow bikes fast than vice versa. A harley being able to smoke a Yamaha mt09 or some 600 sport bikes from 0 to 100 is very bizarre lol.

This review made up my mind about the Sporster S, endup buying one in NJ, was the first one on the state when I purchased…. Pretty unique experience. Felt in love after my first test ride. The rest is history…. Rode a few miles since then. A lot of questions I had about the setting and general things, not even the dealer was ready to answer it, haha since was so new, and they didn’t had any time with this model… now that I had a few days to reflect on this purchase, I feel that I made the correct choice. I’m in my late 30s, and about 5’9 , só the ergonomics were just about perfect with very feel adjustments were needed…. Hope with overtime this will be reliable, I guess only time will tell…. 😁

OC: For someone who is obsessed with performance cruisers like the Magna, Vmax, Valkyrie, etc; it has been a long time coming for Harley to build a modern engine. I ride a 2005 Sportster 1200 this year and my only gripe is I am killing it with my sport style riding and it not having a good cooling system. Liquid cooling has been HD's missing piece in making a reliable engine. I am considering getting another harley depending on the other Sportster trim models they release rather than a Rebel 1100.

OC. Top notch production value as always Chase. You guys are truly the benchmark for that on YT. I think the new Sporster S is very interesting and it is genuinely GREAT that HD is trying to evolve. I wish them godspeed and good luck on their journey but I won't be going with them. I've owned 7 Harleys (4 Sportys, 2 Dynas and one Road King) over the last 2 decades. I've put up with inflated prices for bikes and bad service at snobby dealerships all along the way. Unless and until that aspect of the Motor Company changes, I will cheer on their efforts from the saddles of my non-HD motorcycles. ✌Ride Positive y'all!

OC: As a Harley rider I have to hold out faith that this sportster like all of our others will have a MASSIVE aftermarket offering... in time. The engine and super light sub-frame are the goal, if history holds true basically every inch of this bike will be customizable so every con mentioned will be changeable/upgradable. Just have to wait for the options to start rolling out. Im here for it though, I want to throw a leg over to be sure, but as of right now, I will be picking one up.

OC: great video! I think you are right on with the suspension. I switched out my stock shocks on my sporty with 13" Legend piggyback shocks, and it now rides smoother than my Ultra Limited. I almost feel its a waste of a shock to only have 2" travel. I would have gone 3-3.5" travel and perhaps make a seat with 2 positions for shorter inseam riders. I would have also gone with 2 rotors, because I do think people will ride this bike like they stole it especailly with that engine! Other than that I think this bike beats every bike in its class with performance and aesthetics.
The Diavel and 1290 Super Duke are in a higher performance class. However, when that Rev Max Bronx comes out it may be time for people to replace their Biscotti Espressos and Weinerschnitzels for a Cafe Americano. I would be interested in comparing the dyno charts for the Biscotti, Weinerschnitzel, and Americano to see if the Americano hits its power band quicker.

    1. Another plus on getting this over the Ducati Diavel is that you would be buying American. I’ve always wanted to say that …we are a two car family and both of them are Honda’s (it’s hard to beat Japanese reliability) Anyways, this is a bike that I genuinely like the design but also seems to better than most of the competition in this category.
    2. I would also add the Yamaha Vmax into this sport/cruiser/bruiser category. I’ve ridden both the Vmax and the Diavel (the Diavel was way more enjoyable than the Vmax - and cooler looking). I haven’t tried out the Sportster yet. Might have a chance this weekend - I can’t wait!

Finally, Harley has allowed itself to adopt a great new truly non-Harleyisc engine, similar to the Porsche designed engine that was on the V-Rod, wrongly dispensed with, by Harley.

I just bought my first Harley Davidson a month ago. I started riding at the end of 2019 on a 2017 Yamaha R3 that I got with 1,000 miles on it. It was a great bike to learn on. I had a blast every time I rode, put about 5500 miles on it, and did a few motorcycle courses using it. I ended up selling it last month to upgrade and sold it for almost what I bought it for. In 2020, Harley released the updated Low Rider S and I knew i'd have one at some point. They touted it as a more sport oriented cruiser. With inverted forks, dual disc brakes upfront, and a relatively low weight compared to bigger cruisers, the HD LRS has blown me away.
I'd be very interested to see what Chase and the team has to say about the Low Rider S. Coming off the R3, i'm surprised how good the LRS handles. I'm excited to see what Harley does to further grasp us younger riders. Thanks for the great content.

As far as dealers go I do ride ATVs and snowmobiles so I have experience with all brands of dealers. There are good ones and bad ones amongst all brands. I would honestly go as far to say my experience in Harley dealers for the most part is better than that of other brands. This Sportster S with a tune and an exhaust is a monster of a cruiser. There's a Thai bike shop that has one dynoing at ~122 hp and 121 ft/lbs torque with just those two things. Pretty crazy for the weight, since it's under 500 lbs (custom exhaust is lighter than the stock, 502 lbs stock).

OC: Maybe not directly in competition with the Ducati, but close. I'm from the age of the power cruiser, V-Max, V65 Magna. Where you prayed the front-end didn't' lift so high you went on over, raw brute force. The Sportster (to me) is a cruiser with a big bucket load of power that can get out and run, but more refined than brutal. I'm not a huge Sportster fan myself, but I do want to see what HD does with the new engine package, and yeah, if I find a demo days nearby, I'd take it out for a ride.

@@cmfall1986 I agree with you on that, my Evo has drag pipes and it is knarly. But with the redesign of the engine from sohc to dohc, that gives it a lot more higher rpm capability meaning it will still sound loud as hell with aftermarket pipes but won't have that slower firing order sound we're used to. My best comparison so far is my buddies MT-07 inline twin. He has it straight piped and it's a touch quieter than my evo by about 500cc's. I think we'll enjoy the engines sound.
