- Restoration of a Victorian English over mantle mirror from start to finish.
This mirror frame was missing the base rail and feet. I made new feet and base rail. The gesso was in a bad condition back to the wood in many places and lots of pin holes. I used Japanese tissue paper to cover over the cracks in the wood. I used gesso putty to fill the holes and gesso for the rest. In total I sanded the frame 6 times! The customer chose the side scroll from my mould collection. I pressed it out in compo then fitted it to the frame. Once everything was dry, I gave the frame 6 coats of bole in the English Victorian colours and polished smooth. Water gilder in 23.75ct gold leaf and burnished then oil gilded in 23.5ct gold leaf. The gold was then aged before fitting the frame back onto the mirror and back board.

Thank you for sharing, I have learned so much watching your videos! 🙂
You're amazing Ruth , thanks for sharing.
Hi Rutth, thanks for the video, it's nice to see you working with your furry friend always near ... and by the (wood?) Stove 😊, it's nice to see you together. Have a nice Sunday, Manuela p.s. nice also the recap of many techniques together, including the consolidation, if I have seen correctly😊
Hi Ruth, I just watched the video again, thanks again! nice thematic lessons but also see the work from start to finish. The post on twitter is also beautiful. Have a nice Sunday, Manueela
Es sorprendente contemplar a una mujer tan habilidosas y ordenada en su trabajo de restauradora junto al mejor amigo del homre paciente y tranquilo. Disfruto con sus vidios.
Fantastic restoration.
You do excellent work, by the way! I should've mentioned that earlier.
Another fantastic restoration. Brilliant editing to create the time lapse story (not quite the same without your commentary). And to create the missing decoration for the base of the mirror as well 👏👏👏👏
Thanks. I filmed this at the beginning of the year when just starting to do UA-cam videos. I managed to loose some footage and the sound was v bad when I was taking to camera. I didn't want to not use any of the videos so made this. 🤞 I'm getting better at filming.
@@RuthTappinGilder I think you probably need to stop Luna doing the filming. I don’t think her heart is in it as much as it probably should be 😉😁
thanks for sharing
Hi Ruth. I'm with Luna re the music. I'd sooner have your commentary.
Have a good week 👽
I know, this was the first video I started filming this year before the weathervane video. Me talking was terrible. Didn't want to not use any of it. And it has Luna in 💔
Dear Ruth, thank you for your videos! There's so much to learn!
I'm wondering about an old frame like this: How do you know with what kind of paint/varnish the wood has been treated with in the past? Or does it not matter if there is something non-soluable underneath as long as there's a couple of layers of gesso on top? Would oil gilding be a safer bet if I don't know what kind of paint has been used?
Thank you from Germany and have a wonderful christmas time!
Best to take of any paint with paint stripper. It won't touch the bole, gesso or water gilding. Paint stripper will remove oil gilding unfortunately. You can oil gild all most anything as long as it's sealed to be non porous.
Thank you for sharing, Ruth! I have a quick question about the Japanese tissue paper. If I understand correctly, this is placed over cracks in wood so as to help the gesso protect the gesso that is applied over it? Do you fill the cracks with gesso as well before the paper?
Depends, if its a crack then I will fill it. If its a wood joint I won't. The paper helps, but the joints will eventually open up with the wood movement.
woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow
😁
hi ruth,
i'm restoring an antique mirror. i took air dry clay and glued the moldings i needed to the frame. my question is this: can i just put the red bole (i dont have the yellow bole) on top of the air dried clay, let it dry, sand, then do the water gilding. i know traditionally you use the white gesso, then the yellow bole, then the red bole then the gold leaf. also, i was wondering if you would consider doing a video one day of matching the gold leaf to an antique finish like aging it with watercolor paints? or acrylic paints? i haven't seen many videos on that on youtube. again, thanks for all your videos and your EXPERTISE. also, on cleaning antique mirrors, do you dilute the vulpex with water (how much)? or some other solvent?
I've never used air dried clay, my instinct would be to gesso it. If you just have the red bole make sure you have at least 6 layers if you want to water gild. The vulpex is diluted 6-1 with water although I have used it neat.
Toning the gold will be part of a teaching set of online courses. I'm hoping to have the time to start making them soon.
@@RuthTappinGilder THANK U! will try it out!!!!!
very nice work and pretty mirror. I was wondering if you would consider uploading another version of this video without the music? I would love to actually "hear" you work (even if there's background noise or moments without any sound at all) Would have loved a longer video too. Oh and thanks for the chapters, I love it when people think of that!
Thanks. I did film it to be a much longer full restoration video. But the new mic sound was terrible. So ended up cutting all the me talking to camera. I promise the customer a video so made this. I'm filming two more full restoration videos at the moment so they will be out at some point.
Brilliant Ruth, thanks. They really deserve to be in a box set as a master class in how to gild and restore. 👽
Hi Ruth, I just subscribed to your channel and have been binge watching your videos-I love them! ... I am new to water gilding and I was wondering if it's possible to do this using imitation gold?
I love binge watching a new channel, sorry I don't have many videos yet. The next video will be on water gilding with metal leaf 😁. 🤞out this Sunday
Hello, I was curious what kind of material was being pressed into the molds to make the side scrolls?
It's called compo. I will be doing a video on compo at some point.
Hello! your videos are very useful and informative) I want to try to restore an antique frame according to your advice. Can you please tell me what kind of “compo” material this is? maybe because of my bad English, I don't understand(

This is a video about compo, Where to buy it is in the description. Hope that helps.
Thank you very much)
Unfortunately, delivery to Ukraine is very expensive(
I'll try to find a solution)
I also love the narration and explanations of the process, but I still find this educational, especially after reading the text . I have a few questions...was that a rice paper patch? and, what filler were you using? You said it was gesso putty? Did you make it? So this was a combo of water and oil gilding? Thanks:)
Thanks. The paper is Japanese tissue paper, you put it over cracks in the wooden frame to hepl stop the gesso cracking. The gesso putty it just thicker gesso. I put it in a bag to make it easier to apply. Most antique frames are a mix of water gilded highlights and the rest oil gilded.
@@RuthTappinGilder Thanks very much!:)
