    @RuthTappinGilder I have a question. Even though you can’t neutralize it with water, does the Paint Stripper need to say on the bottle “Water Washable”? Or does it matter what type of paint stripper you use?

    Hello again Ruth. I am about to oil guild a plastic badge that was on the side of my boat. It is a 1984 vessel and it appears to be injection molded plastic of some type. You said it's not a good idea to use oil size on water-permeable materials. I'm not sure if plastic is. You also mentioned using some sort of "Button" stuff to make a water-permeable item not so and then able to use oil size. What is that "Button" stuff and where can I buy it? Do you sell it? I would be happy to buy it from you in a small amount say 1/4 of a liter?

    Hello Ruth, first off, thank you for sharing so much of your knowledge, your page is a treasure trove of information, not only did I learn a lot from watching your videos, but it's a real pleasure! ❤ I have a question. I am a fine art painter, and work with oil paints. I presume it would be best to work with oil size if I want to apply gold leaf on top of layers that are already painted. My question is: If I have already gessoed (with store-bought acrylic gesso) a wooden panel and painted at least one layer with oil paint, can I apply oil-based gold size directly? Also, is it possible to do water gilding on top of such a surface? Or will it not adhere because the paint underneath is oil-based? Thank you very much!

    • @RuthTappinGilder
      @RuthTappinGilder 14 днів тому

      @@TheRikaMari you should be ok with oil size on the paint but if it drys too fast then seal it first. You can't water gild on an oil painting. What a beautiful project. Weimaraners are perfect, especially the old ones. I am sorry for your loss which I know will still be lingering even though you filmed this 2 years ago. They never give back the piece of your heart they have stolen. Now to see if I can make a casting from the somewhat haphazard mould of my dearly departed weims last paw print. I came for the gilding knowledge and stayed for the Luna memento mori.

    Mercury seems to have a special nose for gold. It always finds it.

    Great video Ruth. Are you using the vulpex neat or mixed with a spirit solvent? I may have missed this information somewhere. Thank you

      @@ruthschambers I'm using it neat. You can dilute it down with water to 6-1

    You are wonderful! Your enthusiasm for water gilding really shines - no, sparkles! I can relate to what you were saying at the end; I too had to collect bits and pieces of knowledge from different people. My first instructor was an expert gilder but there were some things she omitted or neglected to show; perhaps, on purpose. Luckily, there were other people who shared their know-how with me. Now, I occasionally teach some people how to water gild, and their first piece is 10 times better than what my first 10 pieces were. I often think that books and teachers describe and show what to do but neglect to tell what NOT to do.
