As a lyricist myself, I've never been one for a simple storytelling, but rather describe feelings and textures, a lot of figurative speech, and a little wit here and there!
Ken, when I saw this title, I knew it would be a great video! In my opinion, Led Zeppelin is the best rock band to ever exist. If anyone hasn't seen it yet, Heart does this song for Led Zeppelin on Kennedy Center Honors. As they watch, you can almost see the memories cross Robert Plant's face. I cry every time I watch, and seeing this today makes me want to watch it again. I'd better grab the tissues. :)
"All our words have two meanings" is so relevant to today's words. A lot of words are spoken but mean a different meaning. Kudos to you for the breakdown of the video. Keep this series going. Love it.
Im no musician but i always loved plants and zeps range and power, they could all go from soft folky to smash your face in power in an instant, and regularly did that in a song
Never realized how much reverb was on the vocals. At one point in the beginning I thought I heard some feedback? I've never understood the lyrics myself, but I guess that gives it it's allure. Love how it builds in intensity. Love the keyboard parts and the arpegiatted 12-string guitar chord part really adds to the beauty. Epic guitar solo too....❤️

I met Randy California in 1985 at a concert in Michigan! He was so nice and friendly inviting us to his hotel room as if we were all good, good friends and we all just hung out. I read he passed away when he saved his 12 year old son from drowning in the ocean. Although he was able to push his son away from the rip current to safety, Randy unfortunately drowned. Thanks for reminding me of this awesome person! (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randy_California) I love these analysis too. They are so informative. I learn alot. Wow nice job on the guitar. He is a bit tough to imitate for me coz his natural voice is so high. To write great songs you have to be a deep thinking and attentive person in general. You can tell with guys like Plant, Lou Reed, Iggy, Freddie, etc that they were deep thinkers even outside of music.
Yea, it was Alister Crowley that Page followed. Part of that was to train yourself to read, hear and speak backwards. The Beatles had Crowley on the Sgt. Pepper album cover.. One of Zeppelin"s records had "Do as thou wilt" on it. That's another Crowley teaching.
Ken your version is breathtaking!!! And you had me laughing so hard when going through the psychedelic lyrics "The Piper Will Lead Us To Reason" and others ... GOLD!
Very cool. Plant had such great depth in his voice, don’t think he was trained properly but shit this worked for the power group of zeppelin. His voice got even more developed with age even though he’s unable to hit his zeppelin range but this is classic glad you covered this Ken . Thanks for sharing this one. N cool shirt. Fits right in with the hippy music era.
If the old or ancient poetry, phrases or lyrics are in the public domain you can use it verbatim. But I personally think it challenges creativjty to reword in your own voice and see what beautiful things come out. Like if you wrote Greensleeves in your own way. It is a song from the time of Henry the eigth. Some old passages are perfect just as they are for what you need, and you just have to use it. If it is free to use, that can be irresistible.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
As a longtime amateur rock musician who always dreamed of being Eddie Van Halen, I love, love, love these vocal breakdowns you’ve been doing. I have no idea how you’re getting these isolated tracks of classic songs, but they’re great. Request: could you do a breakdown of a song by your cousin Sammy Hagar (if that wouldn’t cause family drama...)
"And there's still time to change the road you're on" is the "here's to my sweet Satan" line. One of the first things I did when I got my hands on a 4-track tape recorder is play LZ4 backwards to test the theory. Lo and behold, there it was. So then I got curious and recorded myself singing "and there's still time to change the road you're on." I flipped tape over, and there was my utterly un-Plant-esque voice murmuring "here's to my sweet Satan." Well, I figured I might as well take the experiment all the way and recorded myself singing "here's to my sweet Satan". I flipped the tape over and there was a somewhat muddled "and there's still time to change the road you're on." So there I sat, satisfied that I proven the Satanic Panic ministers wrong, for roughly 5 minutes before I erased the tape. I mean...I didn't really want a recording of myself singing "Here's to my sweet Satan", did I?
Great analysis! Once came across a story of some guy visiting Bron-Yr-Aur. He said all these nice "psychodelic" lines about nature were virtually the discription of the farm's surroundings. Nothing mysterious about that part at least, just Robert recalling his walk, apparently. Also don't really think it's the case, but Plant quite often says that his beloved Wales has a *heavenly* beautiful nature haha
Totally agree with this from what I’ve read. Everything sounds all mystical but it’s really just putting a very poetic spin on his words about is farm or was on a really good trip when he wrote them. Personally, pretty much nonsense, but oh so perfectly shrouded with a million possibilities. Exactly what he intended. Come on, we’re still not dissecting “ It’s Been A Hard Days Night” this many years later, are we?
Agreeing with others--please keep doing this segment. Very informative with all the information you provide. Did anyone from Led Zeplin provide a definitive answer as to what the lyrics mean?
