Honda e - Modern Take On The Old Civic (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Honda e is an electric city car based on the 2017 Honda Urban EV concept. Two years later at the Frankfurt Motor Show the production version of the Honda e debuted. The concept was a three door with huge wheels and flared fenders, it communicated with the user through a graphic display between the headlights, where the grille would normally be. It featured suicide doors, and two benches going across the front and the rear of the car.
    The production version of the Honda e had to be toned down a bit, and a rear pair of doors was added for some real-life usability. However as far as I’m concerned this is still a great modern homage to the early generations of the Honda Civic. In fact the Honda e may looks small, but it is about the size of the third generation Civic.
    Gone is the concept display between the headlights, but the car still has a friendly face with round LED headlights doing a welcome spin. From the side the floating roof remained, but the wheels are clearly smaller, than in the concept model. Carried over from the concept are the cameras instead of wing mirrors, and the retractable door handles.
    Honda boasts how modern its new EV is. It is packed full of advanced features, and it is built on a dedicated platform. There is new lightweight and rigid design.
    This is the more powerful, 154 hp Honda e with a 35.5 kWh battery, and a claimed WLTP range of 210 km (17” wheels).
    ↔ Honda e dimensions:
    ✔ length: 3894 mm
    ✔ width: 1752 mm
    ✔ height: 1512 mm
    ✔ wheelbase: 2538 mm
    ✔ boot/trunk: 171/861 L
    💲 Honda e starting price: 34 000 euro
    💲 Honda e price as tested: 39 000 euro

    Well since EV's are still more of a fashion statement and are almost exclusively used in town I for one think that Honda got it right this time by playing on the heart strings. Because if you buy a car with you sensible shoes on i.e. for long trips and real explotation no EV makes a sense yet but if you buy it as a second car for short trips around a city this wins on cool alone

    I loved this car with my heart but my head chose the MG ZS EV. I’ve more space, more range, more useful equipment and more money in my pocket. What I didn’t expect, after the reviews, is how genuinely well thought out the car is an fun to drive. Ok, so the Honda looks cooler but I think the three years I have to spend with my cars is going to be less frustrating with the MG.

      I bought a Jazz hybrid not too long back, partly from your review to be fair.
      It's brilliant, does everything I want and couldn't be happier ,but if I could charge at home, I'd swap it for a Honda E in a heartbeat.
      For me, they just have charm that's lacking in most modern cars. Of course, you pay a hefty price for that.

    I'd prefer Renault's electric Twingo. Renault.fr suggests around €22,000 for the basic electric model. That sounds like a better price for what may be a better car - 4 door, rear motor, probably a similar boot. There's a Smart version as well.

      Once you experience the wing cameras, you will be convinced. The combination of quality vision in all conditions plus integrated blind spot warning is genius. While buzzing through the city, the car will buzz even louder if you try and move into a non existent space. The rear view camera isn't as good and needs refinement, as many reviews have said and I don't use it.

    @felixthecat3423 3 роки тому

    Looks good,sounds like it drives well,just can't do a bazillion miles on a charge.Too be fair it's not aimed at motorway driving,so I don't see what the issue is.
    But as others have said, cost is it biggest downfall.
    Enjoy your reviews

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 3 роки тому +1

      If you consider it only as a city car - it's too expensive. Many people work far enough from the city to have to take motorway driving into consideration for their daily commute. 100 km a day, cheap charging overnight at home, and you're golden. But there are better, more efficient, and cheaper cars out there.

    The Honda E is a great car. But the high price and low range let it down.
    Having said this, the original Renault Zoe had a 22 KW/H battery. The current Renault Zoe has a 50 KW/H battery. So a future version of the Honda E , with say a 70 KW/H battery , but hopefully for the same price, would be a much better car.

      I also have high hopes for the aftermarket battery swaps. Assuming the OEM units will last 8-10 years, there's bound to be a market for reconditioning or replacement. And in 10 years battery technology should be at a stage, where energy storage would be denser, and yet more affordable. Fingers crossed.
