Rematch-- Titan 9speed 5.6l vs silverado 5.3l 10speed
21 MPG is not bad for a truck probably not broken in during the winter time with winter gas.
And 6000 ft above sea level...
Exactly, and the Titan is right there with the big three and their V8 mpg ratings
Remember there testing a 400HP truck here hard to have all that power and get any higher mpg
The only pickup I've owned was a 2007 Dodge 1500, RC,SB,4WD with the 4.7l engine and a 5-spd. The best it ever did was 17mpg, after I upgraded the intake and exhaust. By that measure, 21mpg in a full-size pickup is very nice. :)
I agree. Truck stop gas is crap. You'll get 22 or 23 on shell premium gas. Just saying.
The first Wrangler fill got lots of extra gas in the tank on the extra squeeze. I would believe the 26 to be more accurate unless the second fill up had the same extra squeeze time.
21 m.p.g. for a big n/a V8 at high elevation is bragging rights.
Dear Nathan, do you remember when you 1st test the 2019 Ford Ranger? 21MPG was what you did in a midsize pickup truck powered by a 2.3L 4cyl ecoboost, now you did almost the same in a fullsize with a 5.6L V8
Quite impressive for a NA 5.6L at that altitude.
the Titan is a good looking truck..and i love the name..
Economy car from the 80's? My 2010 Accord gets 32mpg all day on the highway. For a brick like the Wrangler to get 31 is great.
EricTheNotSoRed yea my 2011 lx gets 28 ish this is crazy impressive for a vehicle than can scale a mountain
My pt cruiser gets 22 on the free way... LMAO
I live in louisiana, below sea level and have 93 octane for premium. That's going to change the results a little bit. Ford's 5.0 v8 F150 are rated at 20 MPGs with the 3.5 ecoboost 21MPGs. So Titan not bad with 5.6 with more hp and torque
I'd be thrilled to get 21 with my pickup
my 2007 Ram hemi driven everyday is only at 12.9 lol
Yeah 21 with my truck would be wonderful, normally only around 14.
05 F150 with the 5.4
06 titan 11mpg avg I would freak out at 21mpg lol
Get a modern diesel 1500 and be thrilled every time you drive it...unreal the mpg they are getting, 30 Hwy. My 17 HEMI avg 17 and my best Hwy was 21mpg, the 8 speed transmission made a big difference.
16-ish in my 04 Tacoma. My own fault for running oversized steelies with 10-ply A/Ts though.
I think 20.9 is pretty dang good compared to other V8 gas full size trucks.
@tflnow Nathan glad to see you're back doing reviews. From the very beginning you are the main reason i was able to keep watching this channel even before Andrei joined
Nice to see that mpg on the Jeep
Great vid tk! Nathan needs to be on more vids, 21mpg is great for that hog
21 is awesome for a full size big V8 4x4 crew cab truck. For most people that is good enough to where you could still daily it.
I believe the mpgs on the Jeep. My Ram Ecodiesel gets 33 mpg at 70 mph. Over 700 miles on a tank my last trip from Houston to Golden
This is only getting me even more excited for the gladiator diesel!
Dig your energy Nathan. Why are we doing this, because we can! A perfect simple explanation to all the viewers that are confused. lol
From what I’ve seen, the addition of gears in the transmission typically helps city mileage better than highway.
And towing!
Well duh. The final gear is basically staying the same. All adding more gears does it put the engine in a better RPM at low speeds. Highway mpg will only increase if the last gear is higher along with the final drive gear, which should be higher as well if they add more gears.
Yeah I dont know why anything different would be expected by TFL driving on the highway...
James Penner for sure, really helps keep the engine in optimal power range.
Themightykasey that’s exactly why I was commenting. Now the new Ford/GM 10 speed has a pretty deep 10th gear but isn’t rated much better if any than my Yukon with the 6 speed. So who knows.
Thank you for a no-nonsense mileage comparison video that is devoid of the corny awkwardness of some TFL videos - I like getting down to the business at hand!
Great video of course! I’d love to see Nathan’s personal review of the diesel Wrangler
Love my 2018 Titan, i get 20 mpg average, great trucks
As always, excellent video Nathan!
Do you know what the color of the Rubicon is called? Is it Sting-Gray or Billet Silver? I think it’s the former. Anyway, I love that configuration in your test drive. Thanks!
It's a V8, not an ecoboost...21 mpg is about right (on the highway), & probably about as good as it gets for any V8.
Great video as usual. Next, compare the 85 & 91 n see if there’s any truth to Nissans statement on the fuel cover. Just curious
310Sole that statement on the fuel door refers to more HP and Torque on premium than on regular but I too am curious if there’s a difference in fuel mileage difference between premium and regular.
I've got a f-150 short bed reg cab v-6 and I get 16pmg all around . I would trade in a minute for that huge cab v-8 with 5better mpg. Also it better than a ranger (19mpg)and twice the truck so i think it's a win win. Best product Nissan currently makes.
21 mpg for a truck, that’s good
Great to see Nathan again. Was that a Gamera T-shirt?
So happy to see a diesel come back to the Wrangler! Even more impressed at the tested fuel economy! Just wish they weren't $50k+. Great video!
Lucas Burk I’m hoping the future sales of the Bronco will force them to drop their pricing. They have had no competition forever.
BC_Hunter 4Runner is more competition then that bronco will be
Real world 21 MPG is pretty dang good for a fully loaded 4x4 with a burly V8. I'd take that any day.
Very impressive from the ecodiesel....
Imagine what it can do tuned and deleted! Whoaa
Impressive for both vehicles. No one buys these trucks expecting car mpgs so if you get over 20 mpgs its a blessing
I drive a lot for work, now I can add a Wrangler to my future vehicles because of MPG, It wont ever pay for itself, but makes me feel better. My Kia Oprima with 2.0T gets right at 29 MPG on highway with regular fuel.
I will say that my 2.0L Wrangler does get about 25mpg on the highway. Not bad, considering . . .
@@LukeEdward Thats not bad considering Wranglers have a drag coefficient of a brick. The last Wrangler I had was a 2007 with crappy 3.8L. Is that MPG about the same as 3.6?
My dad has a 95 Wrangler with a 2006 tdi vw with a 160hp tune, 35s and a 4 Inch lift and gets 35mpg with 5.13s
But that set up makes the wrangler extremely slow (good off road but not for highway). This jeep is quick and powerful... you can also fit more gear friends/family to enjoy offf road adventures with you! 😁
@@SimplyCarReviews That's true, it's all a compromise though. That Jeep is still nowhere near as fast as a Jeep with the Pentastar. I think it's a bit more than a second different 0 to 60 between the two. That's enough for most people, but not quick by any means. The mpg though, that is pretty convincing.
@@SimplyCarReviews actually it's faster than my TJ and can do about 90. Definitely not slow with 350lbft
Was he able to keep it 4wd? I really contemplated on a tdi alh swap but I dont have enough mechanical knowledge to take that on. Would've been a 150whp and 320wtq motor!
@@Weak_juan not worth having if it isn't! Yeah it stays garaged from North Carolina, it's his baby lol it's like a little tractor.
Great video as always. 🙂
“Aero dynamic profile of a barn!!!” 😂
*WOW* !!!!! *WHO knew that Nathan can actually SING* !!!!???? *LOL* !!!!! *FAB video Nathan* !!!!! #Jeep #Nissan #TFLNow
Liking the Gamera T shirt, Nathan! And, I hope the DEF neck is smaller that the diesel one. 'Cause, you know, people don't always pay attention.
My 2004 Titan Offroad model gets 12-14 mpg average. 21 looks great to me. Please do a longer test loop, and run the Titan up the Ike gauntlet with the new transmission.
Thanks
21 mpg for a v8 that doesn't shut down any cylinders is pretty good in my book all day long!
Good job jeep! Now for that reliability thing.
carpentertrim already covered. Tired of the “reliability “ bs.
Or the extremely high cost. I love the new Wranglers, I'd love a Rubicon 2 door. Looked at one at the dealer, it was priced in the $50's....WTF, WHY? Good drivetrain components and a fancy dash in a basic, utilitarian obviously easy to manufacture vehicle....an Eco Diesel Wrangler is even more expensive! I'd buy one if I won the lottery though!
@@Welcometofacsistube You ever notice only people with unreliable things don't like to talk reliability. Never seen any toyota drivers say so tired of the reliability bs.
What reliability thing??? I remember living in the 80's myself!....
Great job@Nathan Adler! Now we know mpg, let's do a 0-60 and find some real mud and get after it! I just drove the 2019 Armada for a week and the mpg was the same as my 2010 Titan. Granted, I don't have all the luxuries in the Titan as the Armada. ⛽⛽⛽🛢️🛢️🛢️
Great episode. Wish the Titan was a diesel as well. Super impressed by 30 mpg in the jeep. Though a 60 mile loop isn't nearly as good as a 250 mile loop for accuracy. I use the exact same fill-up procedure when calculating mileage.
Those numbers show why some of us like diesel so much when doing mostly highway driving. That is where diesels shine the most, especially since it minimizes how often you will be in regen. The problem though is that the emissions equipment means that the diesel will likely become problematic long before the gas engine will.
That jeep is impressive. If over time that jeep and the diesel engine actually shows any signs of being fairly reliable, then maybe picking up a used one that's 5 or 10 years old will be in my future.
But to pay the crazy money for one of these things new, it would have to get 60 mpg to remotely justify it.
Great video! The next question, would you say the eco is worth the 4k upgrade? Do you believe these numbers will be similar for the Gladiator when it comes out?
21 mpg and on premium fuel to boot. 16 cents cost per mile seems really high. It would be interesting to check the difference with regular on the same route.
21mpg is really good imo. Considering my old 2012 Titan only got like 12 to 15mpg. I actually got up to 23 mpg in my 2019 Titan
That's about what mpg I get in my 2006 gti when I'm babying it and getting angry looks on the freeway. I'm impressed by the jeep even if you have to go rebuild it now after this drive
You say disappointing, I say pretty damn good. My 19 Laramie with a 3.92 rear end averages 14.7mpg.
I would retest with lower fuel grade or 93 once the tank is close to empty. See if the computer timing actually makes a difference in mpg
21 really is not bad for a 5.6 gas burner in a pickup.
rochab77 agreed
I have a 2019 Titan with 27,000 miles on it - I have never come close to this mileage in mine - so it seems more efficient to me. I'm not sure I have ever hit even 19 mpg - even with 100% highway driving. Typical tanks are high 16s or low 17s blended driving - and maybe 18.5 +/- with all highway. So, looks good to me!
JS 59 I have a 2018 and got 19.1 only one time so yeah I agree a 2-3 mpgs increase is pretty good for the 2020
@@JS-um4vr I love my 2019 Titan Pro 4X.
Agree its actually very good for a truck. My 1st gens best is 18mpg
Now watch the ecodiesel blow up at 70k like the last gen...but for a whole new reason lol.
Lol hope not
I have 143,583 miles on my 2016 Ram 1500 Quadcab 4wd Ecodiesel. Just got 32.9 mpg with 5% larger than stock tires.
ZXEJ Downhill with a tailwind? 2015 1500 crew 4x4. After V08 never got better than 20.1. Before my best was 29.6. And those are long averages. Not resetting while cruising at 70 on a flat road for 10 miles
@@stephendavis6691- 55 mph on a 2 lane state highway. Truck has 3.92 gears, Ranch Hand Legend bumper, 3" lift, Flowmaster 50 series HD muffler, Bank's silencer delete intake, and 275/60-20 tires.
My wife's 2018 Ram 2500 Crewcab 4wd 6.7L Cummins. Gets 27mpg on the same route. So getting that fuel economy is reasonable. Most people drive tooo hard, and wonder why they get lousy fuel economy. The mods that I have done to the truck are minor. But the driveability is excellent. I would prefer to have a Cummins R2.8. I am seriously considering putting a R2.8 in my '96 Jeep ZJ project vehicle, since the R2.8 is 50-states smog compliant up to '99.
ZXEJ 3.92 with a lift. Well I guess you got the miracle truck that does the impossible. Getting that kind of MPG with a stock 3.55 isn’t even doable.
Am I the only one that actually found those numbers to be what I expected. I expected the diesel to do damn well cuz of how well they do in the trucks. And a V8 getting 21 is still damn good.
21 for full size truck !!!! That doesn’t have all the new tech or costly $$$ diesel to assist in getting better mpg .... I rather get 21 from solid built truck that is built to be simple and last , then a diesel that gets better mpg but will cost $10-20k to maintain and repair over the life of it !!!
No Ma'am 979 it’s sad that the modern diesels and their complex emissions systems are now less reliable than a V8 gas
Let's not forget about the actual off the lot price between the two...how long will it take to make up that extra $10K they're selling that Rubicon for? Also far less utility. Why are we pitting a V8 gasser against a diesel again?
The titans new front looks really nice, but I'm way more impressed with the jeeps mpg numbers. It would be nice if the vehicle computer could better estimate it's own mpg though.
It would be nice to see a comparison of regular vs premium fuel mileage. Granted the logistics would be different with having to run out a full tank of one octane before testing another.
You need to take into account that these vehicles engines are not broken in yet, negatively affecting gas mileage.
The manufacturers break them in before we can drive them
@@TFLnow Nice!!!!
Would love to to see the MPG on regular gas for the Titan.
21 mpg from that big titan isn’t bad. I’m actually very impressed.
I know it's more time-consuming and more expensive but it would be more accurate with a longer mpg loop but still keep up the good work greetings from austria
The Titan is a 400 HP, 5.6L powered truck, with a heavier curb weight for a current half ton. The mileage is expected. Now what matters is how’s that 9 speed put power down.
I have a 2019 Nissan Titan Pro 4X. It's a great truck. I didn't buy it to save money on gas..lol .
2017 titan pro4x. 80k miles life avg for winter 15.3, for summer 17.2
Wow -that Jeep EcoDiesel mpg was super impressive.
Ah a MPG battle ~~ The official 29th most important feature on Truck buyers minds.
Nice for the Jeep. Wondering if the MPG would get better after the break in oil is changed and around 10K miles on the Titian. I have had a few Nissans and the mpg got better as the engine broke in. And it always got better after the first oil change at the 3750 mile mark.
We have had the Jeep 3.0Litre diesel twin turbo V6 in the Grand Cherokee for years and not only is it powerful but really awesome on fuel economy with up to 40mpg on a long road trip!! Coo dose to Jeep for listening to us because we knew how it would be the most powerful Wrangler they have ever built. This motor should have been in the JK in 2007 instead of the 2.8Litre 4cyl turbo diesel they gave use back then.
2015 MB GLK 250 4matic (with DPF/EGR/DEF delete kit and ecu properly reprogramed) 250+ HP now, and over 400tq, best ive recorded was 42mpg for 200+ miles at 70+ mph average
oh and also bull trunk with luggage for few days for a family, and 4 ppl in car.
so far my favorite highway relaxed touring suv
Maybe the new transmission will at least help the Titan tow better? 21 MPG still isn't terrible for a full size v8 pickup. Its at least better than what the Tundra is rated for, and on par with Ford and Chevy.
It will be very interesting to see what mileage on the Jeep is while towing an overlanding trailer and on a trail compared to a gas Jeep.
My ecoboost is lucky to get 19. That’s pretty good for Nissan
I'm loving the mpg on the Wrangler..
👍😍👍
Wow I think 21 mpg is pretty good. i get 19-20 US MPG in my 2014 Sierra. Could be better but I think the Nissan weighs more than my truck too.
That’s crazy seeing the wrangler get the same mpg as my 15 Ram. My old wrangler barely got 18 mpg on the highway
Was the tank in the titan only filled with premium? Or did it have regular in there from prior? Maybe if the tank has only premium gas and not mixed, maybe it will make a difference
Nissan keeps premium in there so when you get them to test..
21 isn’t bad. I used to get about 18 with a 2009 suburban at similar speeds.
A purpose made 4x4 vehicle on solid axles and 33" tires just hit over 30 mpg. Can't wait to see what it does in the Gladiator.
Hell yeah! I’ll take 21mpg
May be an accurate measurement at the pump, maybe not. I don’t trust the pumps to shutoff exact enough with each use or different pumps. Please give us a report after 250-300 miles or a couple full tanks driven. That would be a much more reliable indicator of performance. Also I would prefer to see the Nissan MPG on a lower octane. I have the same 5.6 V8 in a Pathfinder 08 and has been zero problems for 145,000 miles. Avg mpg has dropped .6 mpg since new.
My hearing is bad but was that The White Buffalo you were singing in the beginning, Nathan?!
Can't wait to see what the Tahoe/Suburban will get with the diesel....
Diesel has some advantages for mpg built in. The fuel holds more energy per volume and the way the combustion process works means they will burn more of it with less loss.
When the engines are working hard there is less difference but on part throttle it takes a very well developed gas to even get close to most diesels.
On the other hand you also have to add def and they cost more so it's not really that much of a difference overall if you take everything in.
Titan is a full size beast of a truck. 21mpg meets the standard, not excellent tho. Titans have come a long way
Great vid👍both surprising results especially diesel but I do wonder with Nissan V8 as I used premium fuel 98 n 95 vs 91 n there big difference. When i started Holden utes you can hear difference in exhaust note as premium fuel use, sound more grumble n differently I got better fuel range from 50kms + on V8 n V6 on 63Lt tank.
Awesome video
How good were you anticipating? That seems pretty good, wasn't your ram rebel getting 17 before it was broke in? Also didn't you get unreliable results at the same gas station when using diesel with the ecodiesel in the ram? Never the less always fun videos to watch.
31.4 MPG in the Rubicon with the 33" KO2s. Can you imagine what a more road focused Sport would do with a less aggressive all terrain?! I know I saw a 2 MPG loss going from Goodyear highway tires to the K02s in my F150. I bet a Sport with the diesel would eke out at least 33 MPG highway.
ordered a base model sport with the diesel for this very purpose
@@joeyscleaninglady2877 You ordered a base *Jeep Wrangler* because fuel economy was your primary purpose?

My 2019 tacoma only gets 19-21
its a mid size truck
@@NissanPodcast yeah and that Titan is bigger than a tacoma and gets better mpg.
@@Jv19979 the Tacoma needs a better v6 for sure.. I didn't see in your OP where you were going with it...
@@NissanPodcast that a v8 gets better or the same mpg as a tacoma. I bought the tacoma because of reliability. It has pretty good power. They need to put a diesel in it
Yup. My 2018 frontier pro4x gets 16-20
I would love 20 mpg from my Titan. I’m getting 11 on it’s best day. Lol
Seems like you have bigger than the stock. That easily killed a good 4 mpg
Louis McComack yes my truck is lifted 6” with 35” mud tires. So that doesn’t help. But even a stock truck like my brother in law has gets roughly 13-14 on a good day
@@mxjb1125 its that transmission I guess lol.

I am disappointed. Are there any rules against posting long comments? It was respectful and positive. Who is able to delete a comment? ... and why?
That's called vibrato Nathan!
Really impressed with the jeep! The titan's mpg isn't that bad considering you're rolling at 70mph. My 17 ram 1500 hemi 3.21 gets roughly the same mileage too. It isn't bad considering youll never have to worry about the SCR or turbo failures.
That titan gets better MPG than my 02 explorer awd 4.0 V6
By the way average is 14.8 MPG
GAMERA. Yes
Damn, that jeep mpg is nice. Now I want one even more.
For some reason the gas engines usally do worse then EPA rating and the diesels usally do better!! Awesome job for both, especially the jeep.
That Jeep fuel mileage is great but Jeep's are good. I used a rental Grand Cherokee to go from Rhode Island to Halifax Nova Scotia, a 3.6L gas and it averaged over 29mpg doing 80mph alot of the time.
Do you have winter -blend diesel in Colorado? If so the Jeep could get better mpg.
I always see a 2-4 mpg hit on winter gas
@@persistentwind Fuel companies usually which to type D1 (kerosene) for winter Diesel, had a 2005 Liberty CRD, less energy.
@@chucklucas5653 I am beyond familiar w this! In fact they do more than just switch to kerosene... more science behind it W/icing inhibitors anti corrosion agents etc. JET-A1 I wanna say has a freezing point around - 45c! Imagine putting that in your diesel!
Takes a little longer for gas and a break-in and I think you should’ve put the lowest grade fuel in it to see what the gas mileage would’ve been
Jeep would be great but I haven't fit in the last three gen overstuffed to small interior and super high price . Reliable also a big question to me . The up side is very good resale value and I could live with that mpg if I could get one$$$. How much does the diesel add 4-5 grand ?
