I didn’t mention it in this video but one of Joy M.’s suggestions was to donate the Adsense revenue of this video (and other BLM-related videos I make) to the cause. I will be doing this, but I also want to recognize that the words outweigh the actual action. Adsense revenue for my videos is usually around ~$4-5, so I know it’s not much, but whatever amount this makes, I am more than happy to donate it.

I stan the right people (you) in this community, that's for sure. Also, I want to highlight what you said about every booktuber having a different following because IT'S SO TRUE. I've been a viewer for like 7 ish years now and I think I speak for a lot of viewers when I say that way back when we first discovered the community, we watched a variety of booktubers (especially when they were all reviewing some of our favorite and/or popular books), and over time we flocked toward our few favorites and continually watched their videos while disregarding the rest. So it's so true that if every booktuber does this, even if it FEELS like they are all doing the same thing, they are reaching different audiences because I don't watch every booktuber out there and neither do a lot of people.
OH I WANTED TO MENTION-
I recommend ON THE COME UP by Angie Thomas! It's even better than THE HATE U GIVE, imo. She just gets better and better. I saw on Twitter that she said her editor or agent or someone said that her third book is her best yet (CONCRETE ROSE, out in 2021 I think), so it seems she just keeps improving her writing with each book. And it was already good to start with!! Amazing
:'-) you've seriously been such a kind supporter and i appreciate that so much 🖤🖤 i really hope more booktubers, especially those who aren't black considering black voices are SO overburdened right now, speak up on youtube about this. this is a message we can't overemphasize
YOU'RE TOO KIND 😭😭😭 always happy to support amazing people!! And me too...it's such a good use of the platform, especially because it would help uplift the voices of Black creators, authors, etc and the literal point of booktube is to talk about books so it couldn't be more perfect. And while it's good to read the nonfiction stuff too (I gotta do more of that), I totally agree with you that fiction is just...it's so powerful. It's literally the closest non-Black people can get to understanding what Black people go through and that's really what we need to do. Empathy is often the biggest slap in the face (as well as, like, literal video footage that proves our point).
you've been my favourite booktuber for YEARS (i've been watching you since 2012-2013), and i want to thank you so so much for making this video. this is so SO important to voice; i've definitely noticed a lot more traction of the BLM movement on twitter/ instagram than on youtube.
thank you so much for sticking around for so long 🖤 and yes, i'm really grateful for people like joy and kai foster who are bringing attention to the fact that youtube has been oddly silent on the issue. just because you've said something somewhere else doesn't mean you should leave your main platform absent of support
The New Jim Crow is the most incredible book! So well-researched and it reads like fiction despite being about real world events.
🖤🖤🖤 THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY TO HEAR (not that i have... any connection to michelle alexander but still). i cannot wait to read it
I'm so happy you've made this video! I've been off social media for the time being since the black lives matter movement kicked up again, but it's so sad to see that few booktubers are talking about this on UA-cam. I'm really glad you made this video, thank you for making it ❤
🖤🖤 i really hope more booktubers speak up soon. it's something that should involve all of the community
As a mixed person, I appreciate your acknowledgment of needing to upload videos and reading black authors. I’m so excited to hear your thoughts! 💗 I LOVE Ta-Nehisi and Michelle’s work!!!! They should be required reading in schools. You’re wonderful, girl! Sending much love! 💗🙏🏽💗 I appreciate and applaud you saying you’ll do your own research about what to read, but I don’t mind helping you START the process (aka life style change). I personally recommend the following books for EVERYONE to read.
Fiction:
Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds
Dear Martin by Nic Stone
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
Nonfiction:
Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates (I know you read it, but others may not have and IT’S SO GOOD.)
Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson
The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander
Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup
hey I'm also mixed, do you have any recommendations for boxed about the mixed experience?
LOVE the recommendations you've listed!! thank you so much for sharing 🖤🖤🖤 the bluest eye is especially such a stellar book. it wrecked me in high school and i need to revisit it/toni morrison's other work
thebookbasement Glad I could help! Can’t wait for the book reviews to come! 😃👏🏽👍🏽
Study Sinead Hey! 😃 Honestly, I haven’t researched books which address the mixed experience as much as I should (I plan to change that). However, since we’re mixed, both of us still have more privilege within the community and it would be a shame not to explore the side of our heritage that’s been undermined for so long. I’d highly recommend reading The Bluest Eye out of the books I’ve previously discussed. Happy reading! 😃👍🏽
It's so disheartening seeing some of the booktube community (esp those who have so many subscribers) not posting anything relating to the black lives matter movement. I've been your subscriber since like 2016 so I'm so grateful for you speaking up when it matters most!
I'm also so glad you touched on the fact that even non-black POCs have work to do. Being a mixed latinx girl, I know there really is an underlying racist mentality present within a large part of our society so, like you, I know there's so much work that can be done in order for us non-black POC folk to be better allies to the black community.
Keep doing what you're doing and I can't wait for these author videos!
Great Recs!! Thank you so much for this!
We see you sis 💙💜🙆🏾♀️
🖤🖤🖤 thank you for watching
This is so great that you did this.
thank you 🖤 i hope other non-black booktubers speak up too
Thank you for this video. It really means a lot. It’s so tiring feeling the need to educate others and yet not feel seen in the platforms that you enjoy. Thanks for stepping up to the challenge and using your channel for great use 🖤🖤
Chimanda Ngozi Adichie is one of my personal all time favorite authors! Half of a Yellow Sun is one of my favorite books. Americanah is a great place to start. I hope you love her as much as I do. Also, this is such a great video and as an ally you have given me so many ideas of what I can do without over stepping which is so helpful a and necessary, not just at this time but always.
I completely agree with diversifying your reading list is a change, not a trend. I started trying to actively look for own voices books when I got back into reading in 2016. I’m reading Date Me, Bryson Keller by Kevin van Whye. It’s a lgbt romance with a mixed black main character in the style a la Love, Simon. Despite it being lighthearted, I still like that it’s from someone not straight and the actual race (which is the opposite of Love, Simon, which is kind of obviously written by a woman).
I did the same. I found my self actively trying to get books that were own voice. Its easy to pick a book about white people written by white people. Hopefully overtime more own-voice books come out by diverse authors so that it becomes the norm and its not some thing we have to dig for.
ooh, this book sounds excellent. thank you so much for sharing! i should check it out. also, yes, reading own voices is so important. i tried to make the non-fiction book recs in the description mainly own voices for that reason 🖤
thebookbasement Your Welcome.
Absolutely! I agree that it doesn't matter how many people are subscribed or follow other platforms, everyone on social media (whether they want to admit it or not) are technically "influencers", and as influencers, it's important to speak out! But you made an amazing point, it doesn't matter if you think only a few people will hear/listen, speak up anyway. Thank you for this, and for being genuine in your allyship! It is so appreciated.
I just started The New Jim Crow. Thank you for this video its great to see people not within my community standing up and wanting to make a change. I really appreciate it.
absolutely. please let me know how you feel about the new jim crow!! i hope it's as excellent as i'm expecting it to be 🖤
Highly recommend 'Girl, Woman, Other' by Bernardine Evaristo!!!
That is a BOOK
Looks interesting! I'm going to try and pick it up
thank you for sharing the recommendation!! i need to check it out 🖤
Thank you so much for sharing, Sophia. From the links in the description, to shedding light on how you plan on doing your part, everything you said was so so important and I don't think I could've said it better myself. Thank you for all the book recs, I can't wait to pick some up and educate myself more and more!
thank you so much for watching 🖤🖤 i have a LOT of books to read to educate myself too lmao
Honestly. I'm about to cry. This is allyship in all its essence
🖤🖤🖤 i'm trying!!!
Thanks for linking the video that by viewing it donates money. I don't have a job of my own or a bank account so I can't donate directly (unless if I ask my mother which would be too awkward)
i totally get you. there's an entire playlist of videos whose adsense revenue will be donated! lots of people are coming together in that way and i think it's fantastic
Thank you for speaking about this and these were some great books.
So proud of this video. Thank you for using your voice. As a black woman and book lover, I have been disappointed to see such little attention being brought to not only this issue but black and POC voices as a whole. For many of us, this is a struggle we face in every corner of entertainment and in America in general. We are always second thoughts or not thoughts at all and when we are included there is typically a hint of tokenizing or fetishizing or ill-informed-ness. for me, it especially hurts coming from the book community because, as you stated, we pride ourselves on being empathetic and informed, even "woke." thank you for this video it really spoke volume. And thank you for the recourses. I hope to see more videos like this on youtube and not just by black and POC creators.
I just subscribed because of this video. Thanks for putting it out there.
Love that you choose to use your voice to express empathy and call for action for people who might be considered different than yourself! This is so helpful.
Totally stand for this, there needs to be a move in the booktube community to open a space for more diverse books, and diverse booktubers, so much so that it becomes the norm and we dont have to cheer whenever we see a hint of color.
i totally agree. i'm disappointed in myself for waiting this long to ACTIVELY expand the black booktubers i was following. just a handful was not enough
Thank you so much for speaking up! even if you feel like you might get things wrong, it's better to speak up then to be silent. Thank you!
absolutely! getting things wrong is (hopefully) a step in learning to be better
Yes, thank you!!!
this should be the expectation for all of us!! thank YOU for watching 🖤
Chimamanda is one of my favourite authors of all the time. Looking forward of what you think. Thank you for making this video you're my favourite book tuber.
Thank you so much Sophia for using your platform and shedding light on this huge issue! Hope more people follow your example
Thank you for this❤️
I used to read primarly mainstream stuff and whatever was popular, but I got bored with that and starting to look hard to broaden my reading interests. Thanks to my friend Richard from Bookishlyrichie, he definitely opened my eyes wider, point is even though i read the occassional popular read, i activately search more diverse reads or books i wouldnt think to pick up.
that's awesome! 🖤🖤 it's a shame that what's "mainstream" and what's diverse seem so separate. that shouldn't be the case but alas...
I feel more fired up then I ever have over this, and I truly am trying to do what I can to change the mind of those in my life to fight for this movement!! I agree that it is so important to spread the discussion as many places as possible, including Booktube! Hope to see more videos come up from this.
thank you so much for watching 🖤🖤 glad that you're feeling fired up. i hope we all are
Thank you for starting this conversation on booktube
thank you for watching!! 🖤i definitely don't think i've started this conversation on booktube. black creators like francina simone, myonna reads, christina marie, + others have talked about it, but there has definitely been so much silence on the part of non-black booktubers
You said so much of what I'm thinking, thanks for making this video! I'm also trying to do better and educate myself, and I hope that change will finally happen
Hi- this is the first video of yours I’ve seen. Thank you for reminding people to not diminish the power of voting locally. The sheriff is the law of the land in each state. The governors, mayors and senators are fall in line after the sheriff. Out of curiosity have you researched these organizations that you have promoted? Are they new? As a black woman I’ve never heard of these organizations so I too will do my research. Adichie’s writing and presence is amazing but you should know that she is a Nigerian woman not a black American. There is an interview where she clarified that. Her experience is vastly different and she doesn’t relate to being born and raised in our system. Ta-Nahesi Coates’ writing is interesting. Read Toni Morrison, Ralph Ellison... you are correct about the separation of the Asian and black communities.
Man you put it so well and some great recourses here. Gotta band together now and not let this die ❤
I love this so much. So proud of you for taking feedback
thank you!! i was happy to follow it 🖤 it was something i never even considered so i'm glad someone told me to
I really appreciate the time and effort you spent with your description too btw!
Thanks for making this video and speaking out! And also sharing resources too!
Its awesome your speaking up and about this, even if your still learning about allyship, educating yourself and others is the best thing to do
Great video! Thank you for speaking out, I really hope others follow your example.
i hope so too!!! 🖤 it's something the entire community should feel the need to talk about
I enjoyed this so much . -new subscriber 💕
Beautiful video. I love when you said reading is a practice of empathy.
The New Jim Crow is SO good. So stunning, so articulate, I read it years ago and it has stuck with me since then. Such an incredible book. Thanks so much for this video.
yes yes yes you are my favorite booktuber!!!
😭😭😭 i'm so soft
So well done! Thank you ❤️
read white fragility, that book taught me some valuable vocabulary
Thank you for your video! It is so important that everyone does whatever is in their power in order to make change even if it is just a little contribution. On a side note: You have been my absolute favorite booktuber for years but I had no idea you were in Med school like me :) I would love to see a small video about your experience and what specialities you are considering. Thank you for all of your content!
omg i can't believe i have a med school viewer!! i'm starting MS1 this fall. i've been leaning heavily towards OB/GYN for the past few years, but i'm sure my mind will change once i start school 🖤
thebookbasement Wow that’s crazy! I really want to do OB/GYN as well :) I thought my mind would change in the beginning but it has come to a point where I’m 99% sure that it is what I want to do (Currently in 7th of 12 Semesters in Germany). It’s just so brought and interesting. Plus the surgeries, patients at all ages, babies 🥰 and there is such a lack of sexual healthcare for the LGBTQIA* community ;) basically you get to be with the patient at their highest and lowest points in live and help them navigate those identity defining moments. I haven’t seen that anywhere except for OB/GYN. Good luck and all the best 🍀
I subscribed just because of this video and i read comics. lol but I appreciate you as a black man and support you as a poc
I love this so much Sophia! Thanks for raising your voice!
absolutely 🖤🖤 thank you so much for watching! i hope other non-black booktubers feel like they should speak up too!
Thank you so much for using your platform to speak up. As a white woman with a younger brother who is half black, seeing my favorite UA-camrs offering their support is so important to me. I think so many of us are afraid to speak up because we're afraid of saying the wrong thing. But there is no right thing to say. And the sad truth is that the oppressors are not going to listen to the oppressed.
I loved this video!! 💘 Even as a black female, I also have to read more books by black authors/features black representation as my bookshelf is predominantly white/asian.
I love all your videos, but this one is most definitely my favorite!
I actually learned about Ta-Nehisi Coates from you. His novel, "The Water Dancer" is my favorite book ever. He's Also my favorite author
omg i can't believe you learned about ta-nehisi coates from me!! that's so exciting. also, i've heard such great things about the water dancer. i'm excited to see what his fiction is like!
@@bookishsophia Omg. Girl he changed my life so basically you change my life. Like he's literally my favorite favorite writer of all time
Thank you for the recommendations!! I’ve been looking for books to read that I can educate myself with 🤗
absolutely!! we're all trying to educate ourselves together 🖤 i know i've got a lot of work to do lmao
thebookbasement Same here! But thank you for adding your voice:) I’ll do my best to do the same too. Hope you’re staying healthy and safe!
FINISH HOMEGOING! lmao, I really loved that book
LMAO YES I NEED TO. it's literally right beside my bed with my bookmark still in it from last summer 😭😭😭
I second this! I started it and quit and then picked it up again and really enjoyed it.
you did great I appreciate your allyship.
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Yeah I saw your video earlier today and I was kinda bothered you didn’t mention anything. Glad you did :)
i totally get that. thanks for watching this one 🖤
Thank you so much for making this video!
of course! i hope more people do 🖤
thank you for standing with us! #blm
💜🖤💜🖤💜
Thank you for this video and all these resources!
absolutely! thank you so much for watching 🖤🖤🖤
As an Arab l dont fully understand what's happening
Can you please give justification
Would love if you read & did a review of how to be an antiracist! I read it a couple days ago and I’m craving a discussion.
oh absolutely. it's on my list to read and when i do, i'll try and make a video for it
love the accountability. imma need you to capitalize the B in Black though.
Thanks for sharing this Sophia!
absolutely. thank YOU so much for watching 🖤🖤
Love this video and that you were able to take the constructive criticism into action! Really admirable
thank you!! i'm very grateful that people pushed me in this direction. i think it's what this community needs 🖤
You are so admirable! ❤️
Love you for this ❤
love you for watching 🖤🖤🖤
This was amazing, loved this video!
thank YOU so much for watching 🖤🖤🖤
"You don't have to be Pewdiepie, you don't have to be somebody with a capital S." 4:20 The irony of someone who fetishizes nazism being used as the prominent an example to address BLM. ...wtf LoL
LMAO CALLING OUT THOSE YA FANS WITH THAT SARAH J MAAS AND STEPHANIE MEYER COMMENT
lmaoooo i couldn't help myself. if we can bring THAT energy for mediocre white women, i'm sure we can bring it for excellent black women 🖤🖤
