I had mixed feelings about this book tbh but I loved Gus!! One of the sweetest love interests I’ve read in a long time 🥺 intelligence!! Emotional vulnerability!! We love to see it
Awesome review 🥰 I had such a great time reading this book during quarantine. I also was really moved by what January said about writing women fiction!
I read this for a book club last month, and I didn’t enjoy it as much, unfortunately. I did enjoy reading about Gus and found the parallels and differences of the writing/interest/process of the two characters!
I love that you bring up the characters name because SAME especially paired with the title (which I felt could’ve been better!), my first impression was “uh that’s what we’re working with?” It’s my own biases but it just felt like it’d be vapid. Thankfully, it wasn’t and I trust reviewers more than my shallow first impression because it was loads of fun and more layered than I expected. Also!! I recommend ‘You Deserve Each Other’ by Sarah Hogle which is about a couple who fell out of love with lots of nemesis to lovers goodness. It’s compared to ‘The Hating Game’ often but I found this more interesting and enjoyable!
thebookbasement just finished reading it and it was so cute! loved it. you should read "You Deserve Each Other" by Sarah Hogle, that's also straight up seratonin and it's also one of the funniest books ive ever read, think you'll like it :)
I agree with everything you said !! I loved this book , I actually just finished it. And like you there were some parts I was like okay this is too Cheesy but at the same time I feel like it made sense bc of January love for romance idk 🤷🏻♀️. But this book is definitely on my top favs. I loved the father and daughter relationship as I can actually relate a lot to January . She felt betrayed and was hurting and lots of stuff she said rasonated with me !! Anyways this books had everything I needed
I’ve honestly been craving a book like this! Definitely add to my to-read list 🤩 also loved the hating game so if it’s anything like that then it’s definitely my cup of tea
I am straight up offended that this book doesn’t come out until august 20th in the UK. Summer is practically over by then! I’m outraged, I want straight up serotonin NOW. 😢
Despite loving the premise of the book I didn’t like the book very much. I think it’s because their initial conflict that made January and August “mortal enemies” was so so silly and the book was trying to pack so much things like the January’s struggle with writing & processing her father’s affair and death, and the rom-com part and the back story of both characters and the cult stuff, and I liked that this book had these many layers but I wasn’t satisfied with how it was told.
aw, i'm sorry this one didn't work for you. your reasons totally make sense. it definitely tries to pack a lot in lmao so it feels kinda chaotic sometimes. i hope your next read is better!! 💞
I heard some great things about this one over on Twitter - I'm glad it brought some happy thoughts especially in this time when the entire world is hurting.
You must tell me where you got that necklace omg. I've been meaning to ask and I keep forgetting to add that to my comment haha. ALSO, THANK YOU FOR THE REC I haven't found a rom-com I adore since Red, White & Royal Blue :')
omg RWRB... i wanna reread that. that book is also straight serotonin. also, the necklace is from en route jewelry! enroutejewelry.com/collections/necklaces/products/gold-star-choker-necklace
Loved your review! I have just finished it and your impressions are very similar to mine! I also hated the names haha Do you have any recommendations similar to Beach Read to us poor people that want to stay in the escapism side of literature?? Haha
i gave it 3 stars. i kinda liked it but i definitely didn't love it. it was actually quite boring in some parts and the cover and title of the book are misleading.
Worst book I read all summer. It was so awful it took me literally weeks to get through it bc I hated it so much. Horrible characters especially January. Seriously she is the WORST character ever. She literally whined and wallowed in self pity the entire book. She was weak and nauseatingly needy.

i'm sorry you were feeling iffy about it! but yes, i loved gus's depth :'-( what a fantastic character
Omg, I didn't pick up on the January/August thing! Only noticed how many times he said her name out loud. Like he liked to hear himself say it.
Yeah even in the letters, her dad said it soo many times.. I’m like ok stop now we know what her name is
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO TALK ABOUT THIIIIIIS MASTERPIECE!
IM HERE FOR YOU

I just bought the book and was very excited about it. But I happen to hate Josh & Hazel’s guide to not dating😂 so now and I’m sceptical……
i gave it 3 stars. i kinda liked it but i definitely didn't love it. it was actually quite boring in some parts and the cover and title of the book are misleading.

This book low key reminded me of the hating game.
I did not like this book, I’m not sure about it. I really loved “If I Never Met You” though.
i'm sorry you didn't like it!!! i haven't heard of if i never met you, i'll look into it 💞
Lol of course the characters’ names are named after months...January and December 😂
Honestly, this book was so lame! I wanted to love it so much but I didn’t!
