I'm 40, and videos like these make me feel old, but comments like these make me feel young. I think listening to (and maybe making) good music can keep old folks young and alive, and gives young people more wisdom than a lot of the old, too. Amazing that this music can still unite us.
Man... 40 is a particularly hard age to watch John Lennon at, though. Am I at peace with what I've done with those 40 years?

I thought it was sacrilegious, unpatriotic, etc. Oh my!!! Now, at 73, with life experience, a much larger world view, and a better understanding of gray areas and nuances...I love this song. It's brilliant and I could listen to it over and over. Am I sad that none of the sentiments expressed have, for the most part, become reality? And that John was murdered by a mad man? Yes. In response to your question about their relationship (her name is Yoko Ono). No, he was married to Cynthia and had a son, Julian. Yoko stalked him in the late 60s standing at the end of his drive. He happened to attend a gallery where her art was showing, he became intrigued by 'this strange woman' and then it went from there, leaving his son and wife. She pretty much took over his life and became a major influence on him. They even had a break for a year in the 1970s, where she paired him up with her secretary May Pang with whom he had a close relationship for a year. The relationship then resumed and they had a son (Sean). John was shot in December 1980 as he and Yoko returned from the recording studio in Manhattan late one evening, by a guy who claimed to be a fan and earlier asked John to autograph some records. The saddest thing is he'd just completed his album (Double Fantasy) and was about to start performing again, was back in touch with his old Beatle bandmates, and planning a return trip to the UK to visit relations and family. I remember the day well, as I was a student in college. We were all very shocked, upset, and angry about it. The nation wept at the untimely passing of John Lennon.

@ALJ Studios He chilled out in the last 5 years of his life. The guy had a hard childhood and a lot of built up anger, during his youth and up until his early 30s Lennon was a total jerk but when he came back to Yoko in the mid 70's after his "long weekend" in L.A. (which was actually a couple of years of separation for the two) he had kicked his heroin addiction and really softened up and became dedicated to taking care of Sean and reconnecting with Julian. Yes, you'll love that song, with 'Woman' John encapsulated his love for Yoko, but it also has a universal message of appreciation for all women. 'Woman' was always planned to be the second single off (what was his last recorded album) 'Double fantasy', sadly the song was released posthumously, after John's murder. The added tragedy is John was probably the most settled and happy he'd been in his whole life, and I think he would have continued to be a successful solo performer. He had plans to do a world tour the following year, and was looking forward to meeting up again with old friends and family back in the UK. It's very likely he would eventually have collaborated again with each member of The Beatles, even if not necessarily all together as a full band. Such an enormous loss of a great talent.

IMAGINE by John "Lennon was inspired by several poems from wife Yoko Ono's 1964 book Grapefruit... Lennon later explained that the song "should be credited as a Lennon/Ono song. A lot of it - the lyric and the concept - came from Yoko, but in those days I was a bit more selfish, a bit more macho, and I sort of omitted her contribution, but it was right out of Grapefruit."
"Lennon composed the song one morning in early 1971. It was written on a Steinway piano, in a bedroom at his Tittenhurst Park home in Ascot. Yoko Ono watched on as he composed the melody, chords and most of the lyrics, and nearly completed the whole song in one short writing session."

It's beautiful sounding, the piano is somehow haunting yet joyful, and the lyrics.. he's basically just saying 'imagine if all the things that divide us weren't there', in a wa;y that's simultaneously poetic yet easy to understand. Simple AND powerful.
As well, it's not a huge long ballad like some might have made for a topic like this, he doesn't repeat himself or drag it out.. it's short, sweet, and to the point.

He then said that the song would go to number one. John didn’t think so and Elton offered a bet saying that if it did go to number one, John would have to sing a few songs with him onstage. It did and John performed with Elton at Madison square Garden on Thanksgiving in 1974. He was very nervous not having been onstage in years. The place exploded, as expected.

Yoko Ono is an avant-garde artist from Japan. They met at one of her exhibitions at a gallery called Indica Gallery. One of her pieces was a framed picture with a collection of random words that was hung from the ceiling. It had a magnifying glass hangin from it and little stepladder and the idea was to find a random word and that was supposed to to guide you in some way. When John went he grabbed the magnifying glass and his word said YES. So with that positivity in mind, he decided to see the rest of the show and that’s where they met.

Sadly, this song has been tarnished for me since Lennon's murder in December 1980. I was only 6 when this song came out, but it was one of my all-time faves even at that young age, but when he died, this being my favorite song, my brain fixated on it as the ultimate example of what a wonderful soul and intellect we lost and I haven't been able to hear it since without crying my eyes out, as I am again now. I wish I could remove that stigma from it so I could enjoy it again as if hearing it for the first time again, like you two. I envy you.

You might need to release the resentment for YOUR sake, not Mark David's. Just like people forgave John's past history of beating his first wife...

I have a similar reaction when I read John in his life story and it becomes a death story. What a tragic waste of a man who had so much more to give. However proving they were soul brothers despite their differences Paul MxCarney did Pipes of Peacd in the early 80s so you may enjoy that touching song instead

this song came out in 1971 I was nine years old he & his wife did a lot of protesting against the Vietnam war and this song was part of it it was a gentle song unlike many of the others that were written about the Vietnam war John Lennon really touched on the times that we lived in and the terrible atrocities that occurred during the Vietnam war And the peace that would come after

When this song came out it was at the end of such a turbulent decade - the Vietnam War, Watergate, in Canada there was the FLQ crisis of bombings and political murder in Quebec, it all felt so dark... and then when this came out it was a beacon of hope and light. Yes!...was the reaction so many of us had to this song. Yes, please! Yes, thank you! Thanks for this reaction and congratulations on the birth of your son!

I've always felt that this song was too short, and it always makes me smile and feel a bit sad at the same time.
John's eldest son, Julian Lennon, had a pretty popular song in the '80s called "Too Late For Goodbyes" that you may want to listen to, though it doesn't have this type of message.
There are sooo many songs out there with positive messages about spreading love, how people should be as one, how the world could be better, and so on. A few -
"Happy Christmas (War Is Over)" - *John Lennon*
"Love Is the Answer" - *England Dan & John Ford Coley*
"Why Can't We Be Friends?" - *War*
"Man In the Mirror" - *Michael Jackson*
    "Earth Song" - *Michael Jackson*
"My Sweet Lord" - *George Harrison* (of The Beatles)
    "Optimistic" - *Sounds Of Blackness*
"Heaven" - *BeBe & CeCe Winans* (brother and sister of the famous Winans singing family, not to be confused of the family of comedians, the Wayans)
"Bridge Over Troubled Water" - *Simon & Garfunkel*

John and Yoko had a close relationship and famous love affair, but their marriage had its ups and downs. She was there when a deranged fan shot John to death, in front of their apt. building. The news of his murder struck the world like a hammer. I, like many people, cried my eyes out. He had his faults, like we all do, but he is a certified legend, as is this song. Please, react to another classic of his called "Mind Games."
