Omg yes, was just going to say that & then I saw you comment. That one & Tommy Körberg’s rendition of ”Fattig bonddräng” are my favorites of the songs he has sung. But I also have a soft spot for the songs in Ronja the robbers daughter that he is part of.
He did the song just to get "a taste of it" for them to find the singer to really do it BUT the couldn't find any better and he was the one that did the part in the musical Chess in London!!
Chess, the musical, is a cold war production. The story tells of two Chess Grand Masters, one from the US and one from the USSR during a Chess meet in Bangkok Thailand. The inspiration was the Fisher/Karpov Chess meeting in Manila in 1975. It's an allegory for the cold war itself. In the story you have Freddie - The American (Murray Head) Anatoly - The Russian (Tommy Körberg) Svetlana - Anatoly's estranged wife (Barbara Dickinson) Florence - Freddies assistant. Hungarian in origin, that starts a relationship with Anatly and encourages him to defect (Elaine Page) Molokov - The KGB villain that tries to stop Anatoly The Arbiter (Björn Skifs) The singles from this musical are Anthem - Tommy Körberg I know Him So Well - Elaine Page/Barbara Dickinson One Night In Bangkok - Murray Head The Arbiter - Björn Skifs. All of the songs are worth reacting to
Thanks for this! This is one of my partner's most favorite songs of all time. There also exists a Swedish version which you should check out as it is even more powerful. The whole Chess musical production in Swedish is astounding.
You can see both Björn and Benny in the video. Tommy has claimed several times, he never prepare his voise. Interesting to see him improvising. Check him when singing with Ola Sálo: "The Ark feat Tommy Körberg - It Takes A Fool To Remain Sane" (video). If you search for the "Swedish essence" - if there is such a thing - you should check a song from the best sold jazz record through time in Sweden from 1964. It is a traditional, "Visa från Utanmyra", 100+ years old, an instrumental, by Jan Johansson. It was often played in radio during my childhood.
He’s an amazing Singer. To me, his version of ”o helga natt” (oh holy night) is my favourite. Love it when he just belt out! Amazing! This song is amazing too.
It is the guys from ABBA, Björn and Benny that made Chess (the music and lyrics), and you see them in the studio during this whole video. Also their producer (of ABBA) Michael B. Tretow. The fifth, silent, member of ABBA. Love them all and Tommy, worth looking at more/all that they've done. ❤ Another wonderful Swedish singer was Monica Zetterlund. There are lots.
The producers for ABBA (also Chess) were Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, you can clearly see Benny sitting in front of the mixing console. Michael B. Tretow was ABBA’s audio engineer. ✌️
There is an old clip of where he surprises Celine Dion when they are singing Beauty and the Beast. At the rehearsal Tommy Körberg didn't sing out like Dion expected, so she was a bit underwhelmed. But on stage he let it all out and you can see her surprised reaction and his mischievous smile. ua-cam.com/video/IVdOQYY-aP8/v-deo.html
You would be very welcome here😊 Tommy Körberg has this magical tone in his voice that always manages to hit me in the feels😅 And this song in its simplicity is such a perfect combination imo. It sounds so effortless, his voice has always been captivating to me.
For some Swedish seasonal music, you should really check out Jussi Björling singing O helga natt (Oh holy night). Another Swedish singer we are very proud of, in fact, one of the greatest tenors of all time!
If you asked Pavarotti he wasn't just one of the greatest but the greatest. Pavarotti in an interview said when asked how he prepares for singing a new opera "I listen to how Jussi did it and then I try to do it as good as he does it."
The thing is that this is shot at the time when Tommy was a party animal in Stockholm. He was doing all kind of substances - he stopped obviously after going to prison for it. Just goes to show he may be the greatest raw talent of a singing voice in the history of the world. The greatest segment of his voice is in a movie about Ronja Rövardotter, his melodic part there brings chills to my spine every time. But it is hard to find on UA-cam
This song always gave me goosebumps. Tommy Körberg is a great artist, his voice is awesome. Both for songs like this and others like chrismas songs (classic in our house growing up). ❤
I saw this in the original cast in London in 1986, with Tommy Korberg and Elaine Paige. It's one of the best musicals. Easily top 3 (with Les Miserables, and Phantom). Strangely enough it hasn't received the attention it deserves.
Sweden's greatest male vocalist imo. It almost feels like there's a current running through his voice at times. It's only a shame he never did a song with Agnetha Fältskog. It's incredible how much amazing music has come from the four members of ABBA and the people they've worked with.
There's so much genuineness in your eyes, that is very heart-warming to see. You should try visiting. Summer is lovely, winter is rough! (Cause of the lack of daylight mainly. I know there are cold winters in the US but did you know that Stockholm is in the same latitude as Anchorage, Alaska!)
Chess was the first ”ABBA” album I ever bought. Benny and Björn are both seen in this video. But without Tommy Körberg it would never be the same! I love this anthem!
Tommy Körbergs voice have the same quality as Jussi Björling, but another genre. Effortlessly they sing clear and beautiful with so much power. I’m Swedish and love the two voices just the same
He still is AMAZINGLY good! I am lucky to have seen him in concerts. And will see him in a musical in 2025! Good reaction! 🌟🌟💜 Yes, we need to be there for one another. You are right!
It's never a fairytale going and live in another country. But for some it is the absolute right thing to do. And I think you're one of those who would make it. Think on it. I wish you all the best!
Oh, my God? Tommy er svensk og vokste opp med vinter, fjell, dype skoger og sjø. Kyst. Hav. Samt familiesammenhøring.Der samles røsten. Pluss en del fanden og talent. There U have it :-) The real Scandinavian way . Norge/ Sverige.
"Chess" is by the two former ABBA-members; Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus with English lyrics by Ulvaeus and Tim Rice and book by Tim Rice. It was a huge success in both London and New York. Tommy roginated the part of the Russian in London. The London team of "Les Mis" wanted him for Jean Valjean, but he was doing "Chess in London". But he did do Jean Valjean in AStovkhom a couple of of years later and was as magnificent as he has always been. I have only been a devoted fan since 1966..
You should watch the musical. I think it will hit you pretty hard. Tommy is a swedish royalty. An amazing singer. He was just as good at the age of 80 (ish) years old im only 36 and i have already seen this musical. One of my favourite musical actually. The musical cats is also amazing. Just put it on and sit back and enjoy the ride
@annkristin3457 yes i said 80 (ish) i dont know how old tommy is even though im from sweden. And i know he is still alive. I have not said that he is dead. And what i know he is still making music. But thanks for the info that he is only 76. 76 is still old.
I saw the Swedish production of Chess THREE times. And I’ve listened to the original since I was a kid. It’s a great musical, and ”Anthem” is the best song ever.
That is not true, though. He has had several vocal coaches through the years. I know a at least one of them. But he has never been studying music school. That part is true.
He is very well known here in Sweden, for good reason. As a Swedish speaker I can hear his "Swedish" tone. He clearly has listened to Jussi Björling and others before him keeping the singing tradition ...going.
He is the best singer I have ever heard. My absolute #1 idol! And Chess is truly the best Musical ever, in fact, the term "Musical" doesn't fit right in my eyes, it is an experience that transcends all other Musical productions I have ever seen or heard.
There's a clip from a Swedish tv-show called Så ska det låta, where Tommy sings the Swedish version of Bridge over troubled waters and absolutely kills it! It's worth a watch! The song is called Som en bro över mörka vatten in Swedish

City in lights......Best song ever
He did the song just to get "a taste of it" for them to find the singer to really do it BUT the couldn't find any better and he was the one that did the part in the musical Chess in London!!
No..Björn and Benny basically wrote it for Tommy
Tommy Körberg is one of the best male singers I have ever heard! As a swede I grew up with his voice.
Fred Åkerström and Cornelis better
But behind them ok
Wadling, Jelinek and Gärdestad also great
Tommy one of the best voices he is always putting in emotions .

I've heard it many, many times (even live, in Swedish) and I get goosebumps every time!
I saw Chess and Tommy Körberg in London on February 24, 1987. Fantastic!
I bet it was amazing!
I was there a month later (about). Spectacular!
It's a love song to a any country you can relate to and love. Never gets old. You're welcome to our beautiful Sweden.
We played this at my mothers funeral in September, it was one of her favourite songs.

I took a beer with Ola Sálo at Storsjöyran, Östersund, Sweden some years ago. So great and humble guy.

@lo_souza You are right! 🙈👍
I thnk the third person in the video is Tim Rice who wrote the lyrics for Chess (and many other well known musicals).
@@frokenulle4870 That would be the fourth person, since it's already Björn, Benny and Michael. Rice seems likely, who wrote the lyrics with Björn. 😊
@@frokenulle4870 Indeed Tm Rice is in the video also.

If you asked Pavarotti he wasn't just one of the greatest but the greatest. Pavarotti in an interview said when asked how he prepares for singing a new opera "I listen to how Jussi did it and then I try to do it as good as he does it."
@eddiewinehosen6665
Pavarotti was asked once if he "managed" to do it like Jussi and his response was:
"Please, I'm only human"

And to think that this man have never taken a voice lesson in his life. Just pure tallent.

Tommy Korberg has a powerful and compelling voice. I don't think I have heard anything from him that I have not liked.
Tommy Körberg still have a fantastic voice even though he is born in 1948 ( 76 years old)
Peter Jöbacks version of this song is also really good
