- Chris Ashworth records a series of 1950s Indy Cars at Michigan International Speedway. This was a vintage racing event that was associated with the Concours d'elegance of America, where these cars were on display after this event.
This event was incredible! I got to wander in the pits and the garage area. You will hear these cars starting up right from the tailpipes, and you will see them driving on the track from the pits.

the first car , the black and gold one , was the car from smokey yunick's garage . i grew up in daytona , his garage was right by the river , and when he would dyno a engine , you could hear it all over town and up and down the river . it was wonderful , like music from heaven . i was a little kid , but i knew then i was hearing history
Thats awesome man! What a great experience
Gold and Black equals Smokey! his shop was down the street from our Grand Ma Nelson's house! the good ol' days
I’m a Brit and that black and gold car gave me the fizz.
My first thought was that it was a Smokey Yunick color scheme 😂
It was his first indy car. Driven by Paul Goldsmith in 1958 and was sadly involved in an 8 car wreck on the first lap.
My ears have died, and gone to heaven. I could listen to this all day.
nice
That Corvette V8. My god what a beautiful close up of that intake! Those little velocity stacks were mirror polished! And such a glorious noise it made on the banked oval.
To whom it may concern: Thanks for not putting music on here. The engines are the music. Also, .... would loved to have heard a NOVI.
Exactly and precisely.
It may be loud, but it is a melodious loud. If you want to hear unpleasant and painful loud, sit in a Harvard taking off.
Damn it I need to get to one of these vintage Roadster events before I leave the planet. This one is at IMS and I was there for the first Indycar race in 1981. In 2007 at the Rolex Reunion at Laguna Seca the featured car were Roadsters which I attended as well. My first 500 was 1957 when I was age 12.
Thank you for NOT including a soundtrack or quick edits. Nice to actually see & hear the cras.
I am amazed at how these guys fit their HUGE balls into that little cockpit. Bravo!
Beautiful sounds, and the cars are so pretty, and stylish.
Massive thanks to the people who have the passion to keep these cars alive and showcase a great era in motorsports.
Vintage racing, of all kinds, shames modern racing.
Love it, Love it, Love it!!!!
Thank you, again.
Cheers.
All vintage cars are amazing. They all have a stylish look, even back in the 1920s. All of them are my favourites. I cannot pick just one. Haha. :D.
THAT SOUND...incredible. If I had liquid income, there would be one of these in my garage. And a hammock nearby so I could see it when I woke up every morning.
A most enjoyable clip and the sound is out of this world.Nothing today compares with these masters of speed!
Back when a business card printing company from Milwaukee could race and win the Indy 500.
Now it's a NASA like budget
Yes, but those cars were deathtraps in the 50s. 14 of the 33 drivers who started the 1958 Indy 500 eventually died in crashes within 10 years or so. Sunday's big crash would be unsurvivable back then. But the driver walked away !
I think motorcycles are safer.
Peter Crowl.. And that's 53mil a day, every day, 365...

Fantastic! Those engines sound wonderful, and the cars were beautiful! I think the 50s and 60s are my favorite era Indy cars!
And the 50's and 60's F1's and Le Mans cars are works of Art and Beauty!!!
These cars from that era of racing are my favorites. They make me tingle all over and get excited in a happy way. I wish I could own one of those. Especially #31. WOW.
THE RED ONE SOUNDS SO FREAKEN EVIL ITS SICK
Anthony Christopher i love it, pure, raw ,evil beast on wheels!
I think the red one is a small block Chevy, but I wasn't there. My guess is that tire and track speed restrictions, and the desire for self-preservation prevent the drivers from opening up the throttles on these cars. The Novi s "screamed". I was fortunate to have grown up close to the IMS in the 50's and 60's so I had many opportunities to cover my ears when the Novis took to the track.
I’ve heard some sweet sounding race cars in my time but that red one was absolutely delicious, both in the pits and on the track.
The red color describes itself
@@billr8667 Fuel Injected Corvette engine. Check out the valve covers.
Love this post....watched a bazillion times....but as I watched it today I recall my youth and seeing cars like these at Trenton Speedway and never thought about the way there was NO thought in how the cockpit material would burn.
Love to see that old stuff!
Wow ! 😁😁😁 They may not be as fast or full of technology as today’s machines, but they look and sound like REAL race cars. Thanks for sharing (brings back memories 👍🏻)
OMG how wonderful.
I notice the tyres on #31 are treaded on one side only as was the way back then. The Lotuses of Jimmy Clark and Graham Hill really looked strange and they changed the world in Indy racing. Thanks for posting.Amazing.
You gotta love the look of these old classic roadsters and the engine note is second to none.
OMG them engine sounds are amazing.
so loud
My god they sound like world war two fighter planes.Fantastic
That is exactly what I thought as well.
GBURGE55 yes sirrr
true
Nothing like the sound of an offy!
They look like skinny corvettes from the back lol
What beautiful, amazing machines. Love this era of race cars.
I'm from Europe...this cars are unbelievable....another school of car construction and related competitions. I remember a cup of race with Indy and Formula One cars...at Monza autodrome in Italy - 1957 and 1958...Epic times....
REAL racing cars!! can you imagine seeing 33 of these beasts going around Indy at full speed??? That must have been AMAZING
fabulous VIDEO!!!! No crap music, great focus and videography, and the SOUND of those engines!!!! BRAVO!!
Thank you so much!
I like the little map pocket in case the driver gets lost doing a lap.
Update: I was facetious at first, but at the same time there was an incident of a Formula 1 driver who mistakenly turned into a parking lot instead of turning onto the pit road.
There is an instruction manual in there *how to turn left :beginner level*
My god those sound like heaven
When Racecars looked like Racecars ,wow thanks for the Video upload
The red car sound driving on the track was awesome
1966 born in Indianapolis...at the race before I could walk..Thanks Dad !!! obviously don't remember first couple of years.. but I remember being at the Holly grounds of INDY
Absolute magical sights and sounds. Imagine the music of 30 of these being driven competitively.
Nice to see and hear those old veteran race car on the track . Those were the days back then.
that's what car's are supposed to sound like,
Chevy sounds good, Offy sounds better at full song..
PAUL HAMMERSLEY Sir, I would like to introduce you to Lexus LFA, hope you change your mind on the sound of a car...
Low flying aircraft sound.
1:19 ye but look how close the exhaust is to the head
back then they didnt have helmets
luiggi714 You must’ve heard a straight piped LFA if you think it sounds anything like this
01:27 - "Mah, I got my own starter, ya primates!"
Treetop64 lol! Ya primates!
Is that the Maserati?
Real race cars don't have #1, doors, #2, Fenders, #3 starters.
A reporter once asked a old school F1 driver "how do you start it?" The driver said "I don't know I just twirl my finger in the air and it starts"
The simplicity of these designs are so beautiful
These engines sound more like the real cars that NASCAR used to run in the old days. I really loved that sound. Thanks.
Excellent video of cars that took a real man to drive. Love the sound.
Loved the sound.Takes me back to my childhood.
What amazing shapes, sounds... This is a delight for the eyes and ears!
these were the best looking race cars ever! much better than the ones of today
Born and raised in Indy. Unfortunately too late to see these open wheel roadsters race. I would love to drive one sometime. Not real fast, but fast enough to get the feel. I believe that Indy and F1 in the 50's - 70's were really the days of gladiators of racing. It is sad when a driver dies in a crash. But imagine how alive they all feel while in a race. I was a paratrooper in the Army. Jumping, especially at night with full combat gear is a rush. I believe that they give somewhat the same feeling.
Absolutely fantastic. Thanks for including some good track sound, which so many vid's like this do not.
What beautiful music on the track.
This is the definition of pure beauty
I'm currently the caretaker of the 3 white wooden boxes (small, medium and large) that the Indy 500 trophy's sat on during the race for many years, for display during the races. Bill Marvel went to church with my parents here in Kentucky before he passed away. Awesome guy. I wanted to have Bill autograph them and get his photo with them to document them but sadly he passed away before I could ask him. He was track manager for many years, among other things. Bill was a fantastic guy who had many photo's and stories from his career at the track. He was really a super nice guy.
am i the only one who, when they went by up on the high bank, was reminded of Allison or Rolls Royce powered fighter planes flying over?
The cool factor of these is off the charts.
These cars are jaw-dropping beautiful like works of art
This is truly beautiful. Thank you!
i could listen to that red indy car all day long everyday never get sick of it
i love the old ladys starting up these vintage beasts.
the one in the purple sweater looks like my great grandma.
picturing my great grandma firing up a vintage indy race car makes me happy :)
Would have loved to see the front engine roadsters back in the day. My first in person open wheel race was Indy in '91, but was hooked on all racing back as far back as the '60s.
The # 31 car is a 1957 Kurtis craft roadster originally driven by Andy Linden and owned by McNamara/Kalamazoo Sports. In 1958 owned by Smokey Yunick and driven by Paul Goldsmith. The #7 is a 1958 Kurtis craft built with independent front suspension it was driven by Johnny Thompson. The #1 car is A.J. Foyt's 1964 Indy 500 winning car ( Chief Mechanic George Bignoti ) a Watson roadster. All 3 have Offenhouser overhead cam 4 cyl. engines. The #82 car is THE first chevy V-8 powered (also fuel injected) car to run at Indy in 1960! Incredible cars all.
phakit Thanks for all that information. Any idea about the top speed or the average speed for a lap at Indy on those cars
Scott Golden - By 1964, we're talking 155-160mph avg qualifying speeds. AJ's roadster was the last front-engine to win at Indy, and was already up against quicker rear-engine cars that year, (not to mention getting through the horrendous early-race accident that killed Eddie Sachs and Dave McDonald).
#1 was the peak of roadster development, driven by one of the most bad-ass drivers to ever sit behind a wheel.
Thanks for the info- it's amazing that 4 cylinders can sound soooo sweet :)
Love it! The first car was a hoot with the side upholstery and a map pocket. :-)
I've not come across these before. What astonishing racecars! Huge noise, funky asymmetric design...they must have been brutes of things to race. I can't even imagine what it must have been like going wheel to wheel on a banked track in these.
What a great video. Awesome sound. Love to blast around in one of those.
from 2:21 PURE EARGASM!! That incredibly sweet sound of vintage carbureted V8 roaring through the track. Puts these new economical "racing" engines into shame!
WHOA! In black and white films, Indy cars looked pudgy and clunky. Up close and in color, these are some damn sexy machines! Thanks for the upload!
Thanks uploader mate, made my day!! Had same feeling or i can say i was fortunate enough to have alike experience in game ""Saboteur""!!
Now these vintage indy lovers will be able to have fun of these virtually in new Mafia game as well!!
Awesome sounds, thanks for posting. Also, many thanks for not adulterating the engine sound with music.
Regards Paul in NZ
Now thats what real racecars sound like!Sad,well never hear those sounds again, except at a sprint car race.Man,that sound was heaven! You can almost smell the oil!
OMG!!@3:51 the finest sounding Small Block Chevvy EVER!!! (And maybe one of the most expensive at the time)
They’re so beautiful
That black and gold #31
especially.
The collective roar of the entire grid must have been marvelous
The most beautiful Indy cars ever.
Imagine if sprint cars and F1 cars still sounded like this 🤘🏽🏁
'Love the cars...and the sound, wow!
Amazing video! Those cars are beautiful. And the thunder...damn 😳
They sound like warbirds on flyby, love it!!!
Such a gorgeous sound, that red Corvette powered one , wide open down the backstretch.
For some reason i find it very satisfying that the dominant engine at Indy for a long time was a 4 cylinder Offy
With 400 horsepower
Has anyone ever mentioned exactly how incredible these cars sound? Because damn, those are some awesome cars.
They sound really cool!!
Thats when racecars sounded like racecars!
But when one simple crash could snap your neck
@@Blight225 if that’s your concern
Don’t race
Problem solved
@@Heavywall70 I’m not concerned that was the truth back then with those cars.
One of my favorite parts of any Indy car race weekend. At Road America, Milwaukee mile and at the Indianapolis 500.
The SBC with the zoomies and the teeny-tiny flywheel is always a favorite.
I guess all you nerds didn't like the fact that I like the small black Chevy because it sounded most powerful because it was
Freakin Awesome. Great sound recording
The red car was absolutely sexy!!! Was unreal to see smokey yunicks 31 offy also
Once upon a time we’re my ear drums I could listen to this max volume all day
What's the name of the red V8 car? It sounds amazing at half power down the straight... I could himagine at full honk!
The engine is a small-block Chevy engine with mechanical fuel injection, don't know who built the car itself.
I want one!
@TheTrihorn1 Yes, very angry sounding. It's amazing how different they all sound too.
The throttle response on that fuel-injected small block gives me a chubby...
fuel injected xd?
+Nikola Sivcev Yep - on the red car, the first to start. A small-block Chevy with Hilborn mechanical fuel injection.
For anybody who wants to know more about these cars, look up "Indy roadsters, or Watson Roadsters.
To Oliver McQueen; this type of car was what was run at Indy in the 1950's and early 60's. The last year for a roadster win, I think, was 1964 and the last roadster was run at Indy in either 1966 or 1967.
I really like hearing These old cars especially the offy .They were fast for four cylinder motors
The red car with the small block chevy V8 - what a sound. And how quick it rev's when the first start it.
Narrow tires, narrow tread, antique suspensions, antique engines, mean sounding, dangerous, -- I love'em!
Nothing sounds quite like the Offy.
I would like to hear them at maximum revs! 25 cars on the track at full speed must be earthshaking!
WOW, What nice cars. Built by race mechanics, not engineers. What those mechanics did was nothing short of spectacular.
@Nicksandalis This event actually allowed spectators to wander in the pits and the garage area, which is way cooler than being in the stands! I think a lot of people didn't hear about this event because it wasn't heavily advertised. I'm sure happy I got to see it!
There were other classes of cars that day that I will be uploading.
Being a long time resident of Indianapolis, I actually recognize most of these cars. The red one, I believe, was entered in the 1959 500 but was not qualified. It had been assigned to Ralph Liguori . It was a Maserati powered car. The yellow number seven was driven by Johnny Thompson to a top ten finish in the 1956 500. The white # 1 was the 1964 winner piloted by A.J. Foyt.
@SpamWich722 F1 cars? Now THAT is something I must see up close in person!! Those things sound incredible!
That Corvette engine has practically no inertia at all! Love the way it grunts and immediately silences once you lift the throttle.
High degree cams, very powerful engines. For me they are HOT RODS!
I like it! Thumbs Up! Greetings
Fantastic! Love it!
Truly beautiful pieces of history, would most definitely kill to just drive one :P
Sounds awesome, I wish I could've made it! It looked like fun! Great camera work!
