The Beatles: She Said She Said (Drum Cover)

- As I mentioned in my video for "Please Please Me" an important album in The Beatles' discography on this date in 1966. The album of course is the fantastic Revolver. Released on August 5, 1966, the album was the last album released before The Beatles retired from live performances with their last concert being at Candlestick Park on August 29, 1966, just four weeks after the album's release. The album is their first album to include different studio techniques such reverse tape effects, automatic double tracking, tape loops, and many more.
To celebrate this spectacular release, like what I did with Sgt. Pepper, I will be covering Revolver in it's entirety minus "Eleanor Rigby" and "Love You To" since they do not have drums featured. I know some people wanted me to do Abbey Road, and I am sorry to disappoint you all, but I want to try and get some more equipment to make that album sound great. If all goes to plan, my next full album project will be Abbey Road which I hope to start on its anniversary release date in September. That is the plan and I am sticking to it. I also like Revolver a little more than Abbey Road, so that is also why I decided to this.
The first cover up for Revolver is the wonderful "She Said She Said." Inspired by an LSD trip with actor Peter Fonda, the song was the last song completed for the album and was the only song on Revolver to be completed in a single day. It was also Lennon's first composition he brought to the band in a couple months. Paul McCartney does not appear on this song after walking out of the session due to an argument. George Harrison provides the bass.
Of course the stand out on this song is Ringo's fantastic drumming. He is all over the place on this song. Like "Rain", he rarely plays the fill the same way twice. It's always different. His drumming seemed to get more complicated in the later years. They were no longer your traditional pop band, they were evolving and so was his drumming. Anybody who says Ringo can't play should check this song out. Check out the isolated drum track and see for yourself:
• Video
I apologize for the long description but there was much to talk about. I hope you enjoy this video and I hope you join me as I tackle every song on this album.
Little Fun Note: If you look carefully at around the 2:16 mark, behind the ride cymbal you can see a guitar fall over. I didn’t notice it until I was editing the video and saw it happen in the background. The guitar is fine however.
If you are new here and like what you see/hear, please consider subscribing so you do not miss out on more covers in the future. I doubt you would want to miss what I have in store during these next couple months!
Ringo went SO HARD in the whole revolver album ong
Some great moments from him on revolver.
This and Rain are probably two of Ringos best performances and you’ve executed them both perfectly! Well done!!
Thank you kindly Dom! It means a lot! Definitely two of his hardest performances and took a little bit to execute.
A day in the life, too
Yes, and A day in the life. This song of sgt peppers is not the same without ringo' s drum
Strawberry fields too.
Ringo was not a drummer but a musician
Best drum cover of this song out there.
Thank you very much!
As a huge Beatles fan, I think She Said She Said is one of their most underrated jams and on one of their best albums. Great cover!
definitely underrated
Every track on Revolver is a banger
It is an underrated song. When have so many good songs, a lot of them will go under the radar. I never hear people talk about this song which is unfortunate as it is one of the best songs on Revolver in my opinion. Thanks for commenting!
@@akilmer You're right about that one!
Even though people say Rain by The Beatles is Ringo‘s best drumming i think this is just as hard. Seriously props to you for getting those drum fills spot on.
Both are fantastic performances but I’d have tjs au this is his best performance as it is constant fill after fill and each one is different. Thanks for commenting!
I’ve always thought this was one of Ringo’s trickiest drum patterns. He nominates Rain as his favourite, but I felt this piece is right up there.
Your drumming has his exact feel.
Well done!!
It is a tricky pattern to play. I agree that is up there with Rain. It’s great playing. Thanks for commenting!
This is the first cover I see that’s really faithful to original song, you didn’t miss that detail on 1:42 where Ringo changed the rhythm before chorus. That’s wonderful!! Congratulations
Thank you kindly!
I always thought that the 'When I was a boy' section was an overdub due to the change of snare sound. Good job!
It does sound different when you listen to the track. It is possible they may have used ADT (automatic double tracking) on this particular song because it does sound double. It could also be extremely compressed since The Beatles were starting to experiment more with compression at this time. That is why some songs have that big drum sound and this one is one of those songs. Thanks for commenting!
My fave Ringo drumming on this track. You played it brilliantly
Thank you very much!
I’m so glad you aren’t rushing dude. At 1:17 you lock into Ringo’s tempo man. This is dope.
Thank you very much!
My favorite drum performance by RIngo! Those fills are tricky!
It is a great performance and very tricky indeed. Took a long time to figure out. Thanks for commenting!
Young man, you just played this inimitable song as amazingly as any cover I've ever heard.
Amazing!
Thank you kindly! It was a challenge to cover. But a fun challenge!
Great!!!
Thank you kindly!
Fantastic work! There are two others with this incredible swung 16th feel that no one has ever covered on UA-cam: It's Only a Northern Song and It's All Too Much. I'd love to hear you do either or both of those!
Thank you very much! Those are two songs that I hope to get to in the near future. Be on the lookout!
@@davidmontis7259 In the meantime I was checking out your All You Need Is Love - what a great song and cover. There's some wild stuff at then end with both the rhythm guitar and drums going into more of a 16th groove.
@@kevinmoore4237 yeah the change of groove at the end of the song really takes the track to a new level.
She said she said is probably my favorite drum track Ringo does. So underrated
I agree. I know he's said that Rain is his best drumming but I wonder what his opinion on this song is. I think it's just as good as Rain. Thanks for commenting!
Nice work. This is the best Ringo Starr Beatles drumming work- She said She said. Without a doubt in my mind.
Thank you kindly! One of his greatest performances!
Damn these fills hit hard
Yes they certainly do!
You've captured Ringo's spirit and intent with this. Great job!
Thank you kindly!
Nice playing. This song always trips me up just listening to it, so I can imagine that following along on the drums is no small feat.
Thank you very much. This definitely took a long time to get a satisfactory performance. It was hard following along with the track at first as it seems I would either speed up or slow down at times. After many attempts I finally got a performance I was satisfied with. Definitely one of the more challenging parts to play. Thanks for commenting!
Amazing cover!
Thank you very much!
Absolutely positively perfect
Thank you kindly!
The way you use your wrists, the style you put into the shot, you have "the touch"
Amazing work !
Thank you kindly!
Great song with great and unique drumming. You did great!!
Thank you very much!
This drum track is hard to pull of, well done!
Definitely one of the harder tracks to play. Thanks for commenting!
@@davidmontis7259 Can you you do a tutorial? It would be really handy to lots of people!
@@BoingBoomTcshack-xm8ls I could do a tutorial some day. I’ve been asked that a lot
I see how you hit the air tom with your left when you’re doing the breaks, just like Ringo. Great job!!!
Thank you kindly!
One of the more tricky Ringo parts in my opinion, and you nailed it!
Definitely one of his harder parts. Took a while to figure out. Thanks for commenting!
Good video
Thank you kindly!
One of his coolest beats
I agree. Thanks for commenting!
Amazing!!!!!!!
Thank you kindly!
Nice sound
Thank you kindly!
Such a great drum sound man
Thank you kindly! I do like the sound of this track has.
Incredible as always my friend!!
Thank you kindly!
that set sounds amazing! just like the original record
Thank you very much! Took a while to try and get the tone to sound close to the record. Its all thanks to compression really. That’s how you can get that mid-60s Ringo tone. Thanks for commenting!
Great stuff! The fills in this song are unreal, it's up there with my favourite Ringo performances. Great spot, great playing!
Thank you kindly! They are interesting fills to play. Rather tricky
@@davidmontis7259 Bluejay Way has more Ringo fill-magic. He has some absolute crackers.
@@poncccceolymusica998 indeed. That song has a lot of interesting fills in it. Definitely will get to that one in the future!
...glad to see you did this one too; very nice...ringo's best IMO
Absolutely! One of his best, and off one of their best albums!
Incredebile!
Thank you kindly!
Genius Ringo. Well done.
Thank you kindly!
You got a great Ringo sound out of the drums
Thank you kindly!
Awesome 👏
Thank you kindly!
Cool! Keep it up!
Thank you very much!
I love drums and watching you do them to great music. Revolver what an album.
Thank you very much! Revolver is one of their best!
Excellent drum cover. Very impressive. 🥁

Great job!

Wow, great cover, dude!

i love the tone

Great Job

Great cover👏👏

Hey I just discovered your channel, I appreciate Ringo's unique style and you nailed his sound very well, may I ask which cymbals you're using?
Thank you very much! Cymbals are 18” pst7 and a Vintage Avedis 20” Ride Cymbal. Not heard in video but hi hats are also 14”‘Avedis
@@davidmontis7259 Thank you! I'm trying to get a similar sound, I didn't consider getting paiste instead of zildjian for the 18"
Arguably one of the most difficult Beatles songs, mainly because of just how tricky and technical his "backwards fill" are.
P.S., It'd be cool to see you do "Wait" from Rubber Soul.
Definitely one of his harder performances to replicate because of all the things in his fills. Ghost notes, rim shots, etc. Definitely need great hand coordination as well as foot coordination because he keeps that kick going throughout the fills. Very easy to get your hands tangled up.
I will have to do Rubber Soul in it's entirety one of these days. I'm currently working on Revolver and moving onto Abbey Road not long after. I can't give an exact time, but by the end of the year I will get to some more Rubber Soul stuff. Thanks for commenting!
Ringo plays low tom up to high tom as he was left handed on right kit.
You are correct with that statement.
Liked and subscribed 😉
Thank you very much! Glad you found the channel!
@@davidmontis7259 welcome 🙏
Damn you've really nailed the ringo swingy fills, any tips on how to get the feel and swing locked in, really struggling as a beginner
Thank you very much! I know it’s kind of cliche to say this but just keep practicing it and you’ll get it. It’s not about what you play but how you play it. Relax and just let it flow out of you. When playing, listen to the song through headphones and play along with it a couple times with only the beat and then you can add fills as you feel more comfortable. That is what I would do when I was first listening and playing along to these songs. Hope this helps.
@@davidmontis7259 I've noticed he plays around a lot with accents and dynamics, any exercises you know that can help with that
@@hp2823 if you want to practice that kind of stuff, I suggest playing single stroke rolls with some notes as rim shots and the others at various volumes. The rim shots will really bring out the accents. Also try to play behind the beat. Even I have trouble with that. I sometimes find myself dragging the tempo and losing the beat. But that is something Ringo is known for.
@David Montis as usual, killer job on recreating the track. I love that 19" or 20" crash on your right? Is it a crash/ride? What is the weight? The sound of it has very similar characteristics of what Ringo used that I assume was his 18" on his right.
You’re right about Ringo using an 18” crash on his ride. What I have is actually a 20” zildjian avedis ride cymbal from the 1960s but it works well as a crash cymbal also. I got it off eBay a couple of years ago and it sounds perfect for Beatles songs. Thanks for commenting!
Yes yes yes
Thank you kindly!
God that drum set sounds amazing. What heads do you use
The toms are coated Remo ambassadors while the snare is a Remo Diplomat Classic Drum Head. The sound is all thanks to compression. That is how The Beatles got that big drum sound in some of their songs in this period. It is very helpful. Thanks for commenting!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you kindly!
Just discovered your channel and i'm loving every minute about the drumming dude! I got to ask what are those cameras you use? Are they go pros? Just wondering...
Glad you found the channel! The front camera is just my phone while the back camera is a canon powershot sx50 hs. Thanks for commenting!
Sounds great! What cymbals are you using?
The ride is a 1960s zildjian avedis 20”, the crash is a paiste pst7 18” and the hi hats are zildjian avedis. Thanks for commenting!
How long do you practice these?
This particular song took about a week to actually figure out what was being played and practicing took just as long. It took about three days to record and film everything for this. Mixing everything did not take that long as I have all the plugins (EQ/Compression etc.) saved as presets so I just add those to the snare, kick and overhead instrument tracks. So this particular song, from learning to the finish product took about two and a half weeks. This song took a little longer than usual because of how complex the drum part is. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for commenting!
Sweeeeeeeet
Thank you for your comment!
Do ,"GoodDay Sunshine" that's a work out in difficult simplicity lol
I will get to “Good day sunshine” relatively soon. And you’re right, it sounds rather simple, but there is a lot going once you include the drum overdubs. Thanks for commenting!

i must be pretty stupid, but i cant figure out the sticking to the first fill, is there 2 hits with one of the hands so that the left hand can end with the hit on the snare?
Don't worry, it is tricky to figure out. There is a part of that fill where you hit the snare twice with your left hand. It happens right after the first floor tom hit. Hope that helps.
@@davidmontis7259 ua-cam.com/video/nEcba-C8YyM/v-deo.html
is this it? the ghosts notes are obviously too loud but is that the gist of it?
it might be loud watch out
@@DanielS10291 almost! You’re playing a floor tom it where you should be playing the two snare hits with the same hand. You got the first half of the hill correct, just need to give it more of a swing feel. The second half uses this sticking, letter represent what drum to play:
R L L R L R. L
(f) (s) (s) (f) (s) (f) (s).
You’ve got the feel down, just needs some fine tuning and you should be all set.
@@davidmontis7259 hi, thanks - yes with fresh ears I think i can hear where im going wrong, throwing in the double on the left really helps figure it out
Cymbals are a little too loud, not to knock the performance you did great
I was trying get that drum sound that you hear when you listen to the record. In the song itself, the cymbals are louder than usual because of the way they were miked and then processed. Thanks for commenting!
