I know this aircraft personally and spent many years with it before The Cousteau Society bought it and while it was owned by them. Flew with Philippe many times. I considered him one of my closest friends! This PBY-6A had two Pratt & Whitney R 1830-92 engines only!

Didn't they use the "power-on" technique for landing? That must have been a true adventure experiencing that plane and its operations. To air up the zodiacs quickly, did they have some kind of blower? Those take forever with foot pump. Thank you for your time.

@@lonedrumer You are correct about partial power for landing and yes they had air pumps for the Zodiacs as well.

@@harryhill688 It's so sad to have heard about Phillipe losing his life in the PBY plane crash in '79. He was a great man as was his father. Godspeed to you my friend.

I believe it was June 28th 1979. I knew his wife, Jan, his father and their divers as well. Hill AirCo. in Fort Lauderdale, FL.(my dad’s CRS did all the maintenance and paint design on the Calypso. Take care my friend!

The PBY that the Cousteau foundation had And the one his son was killed in had four engines.
Before anybody says anything look it up. They modified their PBY by adding 2 horizontally oppose six-cylinder aircraft engines to the wings outboard of the radials.
So as far as I'm concerned that's not the airplane that being represented.

You must be thinking of some other plane. The Cousteau PBY had two engines and that's all it ever had. Dozens of pictures of the actual aircraft back this up: www.google.com/search?q=Cousteau%27s+pby&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS690US690&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj0_c3Qs4DbAhUBTawKHUNrAU4Q_AUICigB&biw=1455&bih=699#imgrc=_

The PBY that the Cousteau's had was a twin. There was a PBY converted with two extra engines as you say (may have been Lycomings but not 100% sure) but it certainly wasn't theirs. I have read the accident report for that crash and it clearly stated only two engines.
Addendum. Did look it up. The converted PBY was called the 'Bird Innovator' and was most certainly not the Cousteau aircraft. It was last noted as under restoration after a period of storage in Florida.

My brother was the co-pilot for that Catalina you are talking about and I know the true story of why it crashed killing Philippe Cousteau. Philippe stalled it weeks before crash landing at Victoria Lake. Previous employed as an FAA inspector, my brother inspected it after this happened and deemed the PBY un-airworthy. My brother said they refused to repair it, and he resigned because of this very reason. Philippe died weeks later. My brother said they had also eaten dinner with Idi Amin. He brought back a trophy from the palace. My brother was also rated for flying helicopters during Viet Nam and flew the camera helicopter for Bell Areospace. The Cousteau PBY had two engines.

@@crazybrit-nasafan If you have read the report of the crash Philippe was killed, I have a comment here you might find interesting, and maybe you can find the report when Philippe crashed it weeks before at the Victoria Lake. My brother was the co-pilot and quit after that crash, said the plane was not airworthy. And for a fact that PBY had two engines. My brother has a Calypso flag he kept.
