    To anyone who’s hoping to recreate this project, I urge you to contact local window companies. Today I saved 20 windows from the dump, just because I asked!
    I am so excited to start this project in the spring. Until then, I shall pine over my future greenhouse.

    Quick tip, if you're not too concerned about extra holes, motorcycle dealers have great scrapyards of wood from shipping crates. Bring a cordless drill and all the drill bits you have though because there's no standard screw heads. Or bring a cordless saw. And obviously ask permission before picking.

    Thank you so much for talking about how you found the angle to cut the rafters for the correct roof pitch. I've searched the internet, youtube, everywhere trying to figure out HOW you find the angle. I've learned a lot about roof pitch but nobody talked about how to find the angle for actually cutting the board. Perhaps it's so simple and obvious to people that know it, that they don't even think to mention. Or perhaps I'm justing googling the wrong thing. But you've solved what seemed to be a mathematical nightmare for me. And using a speed square is such a simple way to do it compared to the complex algorithms that Google provides.
    Seriously. Thank you.

    Thanks so much! I was so keen to make this and couldn’t find any cheap windows and doors so went and spent waaaaay too much at the building recyclers, then spotted a huge stack of old wooden windows in the tractor shed on our lease farm a few days later. I realised I had miscalculated and needed more so I thought I’d ask the owner if she would mind if I have a couple and she said take the lot and build a greenhouse city if I like 😂
    Talk about timing haha.
    So I’ve had my poor hubby trying to work with a crooked frame from my old washing line/pergola and using old timber from our old hayshed that’s all bowed. He’s done very well considering. I’m so excited. Can’t wait to finish it and move my pepper plants and tomato seedlings in for the winter to hopefully keep feeding us 😁 🤞

    Beautiful greenhouse... I think people who live in areas with high winds and snow loads will want to dig the support posts down deeper...

    • @RootsandRefugeFarm
      @RootsandRefugeFarm  5 років тому

      Terri Hulm true for the winds if you go deeper than 18 inches it would add some extra stability. However snow will not likely ever be an issue because it holds heat so well the snow will never accumulate.

    • @terrihulm873
      @terrihulm873 5 років тому

      @@RootsandRefugeFarm I live in NW SD so we get hurricane winds and it can get 35 below here... We have over cast days for up to 4 days with fog so a night time snow storm or one with the days on end you think you moved to London can take out a roof... I've had a 13 foot drift between the house and the barn for 2 months... It's 4 feet this morning... So a reinforced roof with hurricane straps is definitely in my greenhouse plan... Oh and a good pitch on the roof... Just trying to keep things in mind for people in different parts of the country... Our winter homeless shelter had the metal roof cave in this last snow storm... It was heated and had a good roof pitch... I'd just hate for someone in a cold windy climate to have issues... It's a great greenhouse and I am sure ppl will build a few...

    This is beautiful! Last fall I started collecting windows. I don't yet have all I need, but my motivation for this project has skyrocketed since just now seeing your video. I have a love of dirt, and all things beautiful from my mom. One of the homes I lived in growing up had a fairly large greenhouse on the property. We were blessed. I helped my mom start seeds for flowers and vegetables, and we would plant the vegetables in the adjoining land, and create hanging baskets to sell. I recently drove by the home we lived in and the greenhouse is falling apart. Glass is broken and the foundation is in shambles. It broke my heart. I am reinvigorated because of you to tackle this project.
    Thank you for posting this. Thank you for your vision, your drive, and your ambition

    Turned out amazing. I wish we could build something like this. It’s hard to find that many windows to pick in my small suburban CA city. We don’t even have reclaimed wood yards here! I think my husband is capable, but not willing. I know that Jess knows how blessed she is when it comes to her family. It’s really something special you did for your wife. You just might have grandkids planting veggies & flowers in that pretty greenhouse one day. Thank you for sharing the process, explaining what, how, why. I wish you all many happy years of growing in that lovely space!

    Jeremiah, THANK YOU for going so in depth on your build process. My husband is building me a greenhouse from old windows, and though he has quite a bit of construction experience, we have just been going back and forth a LOT about HOW we wanted to secure the windows into the frames. Most of the blog posts, and videos don't mention how they did that. Your video is helping us think through some of those ideas. It's beautiful!

    Appreciate all the detail and planning you put into it. In Central FL, we are planning a shade house for the brutal summer, that can also be closed up during any freezes we might have. Jeremiah, there are a lot of us that have no idea how to frame anything -- I do, but it's been soooo long that I could use a refresher. Next project, maybe consider showing those little bits in separate "how to" videos????

    I am so excited! We are building one soon. We are in the process of gathering materials. We have several windows and salvaged galvanized roofing to go around the bottom. I am planning on making a video when we do it and hope to share it with you!

    I love your explaining the process of it! I have a hoop house but I’m planning on building a greenhouse this helped a a lot! That’s good to know about the French drain gravel. My hoop house doesn’t have a barrier like that so when it rains it floods.
