So what you are dancing around is that you are a stooge for Fracktal - unfortunately we all now this. I don't know why I keep watching your videos it certainly isn't the playing at the beginning - I go past that to the talking. Anyway you have painted yourself into a corner where you can only do Fracktal videos. And now with the Fender gone and your penchant for hating and not using anything else other that Fracktal there really is no reason to come back to your channel. I wish you luck with your channel especially as your content becomes more and more niche. Goodbye.

As a home guitarist - the Fender Tone Master Pro is a massive step forward in terms of the user experience. People can, and do, argue for hours about differences in sound - that are barely even perceptible to me. It is expensive - but it feels and interacts like a premium product and for me, very quickly it actually made me focus back on the guitar instead of the gear.

I completely agree, I don't gig at all I strictly play in my bedroom and the tone master pro has blown me away so far compared to the boss katana I had before it. Maybe for a professional musician it misses the mark, but I think its an amazing piece of equipment.

    • @QuoVadis88
      @QuoVadis88 10 місяців тому +3

Yes the difference in sound is OCD. It's close enough to do the job. The audience will NEVER know the difference. Only an OCD person would care but I guess there are a lot of OCD people out there. But they don't spend time playing and playing in a band where nobody (band or audience) has any tolerance to wait an hour for some OCD person to tweak the sound to the 99.99% level. Most musicians cannot tell the difference. Nobody in the audience cares about that level of detail.

not really....so it has a touch screen.. big whoop! If you really look at the screen there is so much wasted space and poor layouts with info on the screen...even headrush does a better job with their touchscreen and QC is heads above the tmp. Good luck with fender support. The shiney new screen is cool but not enough for 1700 usd.

I love my TMP. Sold my QC after I got it. I think we’re at the point where everything sounds great no matter what you go with, and it really just comes down to GUI & footprint. TMP is exactly what I wanted in a modeler without extras I don’t need.

I’m stuck trying to decide, it doesn’t help that it’s a lot of money to make the wrong choice. Given both reviews there are positive and negatives. I’m leaning more towards the QC because of the smaller size and capture tech. However the tone master already has a software editor and the sounds pretty good without the capture tech which makes me think I might spend ages trying to find the “perfect tone”. Also a bummer, there’s no bass presets on the tone master.
In all honesty I just want a desktop amp I can play thru my studio monitors that sounds good, and won’t make me thurn my head when some thing new comes out. lol

I've been A/B'ing just using my QC vs the TMP for the last two weeks and I just removed the QC from the desk. I do think the QC has some better ultra hi-gain models in it, but that's not really my jam. I enjoy using the TMP much more (again, can't express enough love for the "always there" looper that allows you to roll between different presets while looping without any extra consideration) and believe its cleans and effects are quite better than the QC. I'm dialing in the tones I want way faster on it than I can manage on the QC.
I really do like the QC and not sure I'm going to sell it or just wait for more development and see where it goes, it's pretty good already and has promise in it. But I'm just playing more with the TMP, less tweaking, more "ah, there's the tone, let's go".

Yeah less than a year old and had to send my QC back for them to replace the volume pot. I only had a few hours on it as well. That and the wifi chip/module is weak as hell. I have to practically be on top of my router for it to work. Also when you turn off the QC and your FRFR speaker is still on there is a horrendous buzz that comes out. Neural said that is normal as turning it off removes the grounds. Um, what? Nothing else I have does that. For what it cost, those issues shouldn’t be. I’m interested in the TMP if only because it seems to have the user experience of the Helix and the QC rolled into one. I tried the Helix and thought I had a bad unit. Returned it and got another but still wasn’t impressed with the sound quality. The QC sounds amazing. Fractal on the other hand has amazing sound but I just can’t bring myself to tweak for hours and the user interface requires remembering what buttons you need to push one how to navigate to them and just way too many choices. The TMP seems to have great tone and is really user friendly and quick to navigate. If Neural upped their quality control and added scribble strips it would be very hard to beat. I’d rather play than tweak for hours although I understand some people love those features and functions.
I went to Mac computers years ago for the same reason. Look, I just want it to work and sound amazing with the least amount of work. Is that too much to ask?

I have successfully completed 12 gigs with the Fender Tonemaster Pro without any issues. As a member of a cover band, getting the right tone is crucial, and I finally found the tone I'd been chasing for a long time. I couldn't achieve this tone with my Helix, but the Tonemaster Pro delivered. I ran the TMP direct out to the PA through XLR, had an EV monitor in front of me, and that's all it took. It truly felt like playing with real amps. I'm thrilled and very happy!

What I really like about the TMP is that it has a little LESS, but what is there is very good and well implemented. I am pushing 70 and have been playing for over 55 years and have grown up (and older) in very much a tube world. The TMP just sounded better easier than anything else I have tried and works better not only with my ear, but with how my mind works. Its just more fun and less frustrating for me.

Your recent comments on this subject and modellers in general got me to thinking. I currently play through an HX Stomp with a full board of pedals attached, which I love the sound of.
However I am not playing live any more and I have a fully equipped Logic DAW setup including Helix Native.
So I reached the decision to sell the Stomp and pedals as they're diverting me from actually recording my songs, the whole point that I bought all the gear for. Native through my Apollo sounds great and there's no shortage of effects available and I enjoy playing through the setup.
Thanks for providing a moment of reflection, it helped me realise some things.

When it comes electric guitar and amps sounds and tones, the one thing I know is the two very experienced musicians can have a significant difference of opinion as to whether they like the capabilities, sound and tone of this or that piece of gear. Our ears are highly SUBJECTIVE. And while I'm still on the fence of which of these units to pursue, I do know that quickly and easily experimenting - and especially, changing or tweaking effects, their order, etc. - well, these new amp / effect modelers make things FAR simpler and faster. And the fact that I can use these units with presets pulled up instantly - that's a whole other world of convenience. I And constant updates are going to make all of them only better. Yes, all of these units are expensive. But when you consider that just one boutique effects pedal can easily be $300, well, with a virtually unlimited selection of classic pedal sounds in one unit - the cost begins to look more realistic. But the early adopters of these units rather amaze me - they must have piles of cash sitting around to blow on gear that most of us might well have immense buyer's remorse over - but that must not be a big deal to them?

My thought was to add some other pedals like a Timeline and Big Sky in the loops and an expression pedal on a decent board. It always seems I'm always recreating what the Helix does. The TMP is nice unit and with upgrades it will be a really great unit. Only my opinions, for what they are worth.

I’ve played through several modelers/profilers over the past few years, Helix, Axe Fx, ToneX, Kemper and currently the Quad Cortex albeit I’ve played each of these either in 4 cable method with a tube amp or more recently with just a power amp and real cab. I’ve yet to go direct to FOH with a cab sim or IR though I have recorded with them. I definitely plan to start playing gigs going direct to FOH but will probably still use a power amp and cab on stage just for feel and stage volume.
I think each unit has its pluses and minuses and as a consumer and early adopter, I’m always waiting for the next great thing that meets all my criteria knowing full well that it may never actually happen. We are living in a great time to explore new products which seem to be coming out like gangbusters.
I started with the Helix and felt it was great for 4 cable setups with its loops and routing options and full MIDI support. I rarely used the amp blocks since I was relying on my tube amp at that time for the tone and only utilized its effects. I eventually moved to an Axe Fx 3 and the FM9 for no particular reason other than GAS. Both units were great and I eventually went from 4 cable with the AFX3 to using the FM9 with a solid state power amp and cab. I was pleasantly surprised at just how good it sounded while at the same time allowing me to not lug my 100 watt head to shows and even downsized to a 2x12 from a 4x12.
The only thing I didn’t really get along with on the Fractal is the use of Scene Controllers which I always struggled with. I was used to the Helix where you could take any parameter in any block and change the values from scene to scene very easily. The same goes for the QC which is nice and easy to change parameters between scenes. With the Fractal you are limited to how many scene controllers there are and have to go to a couple of different screens to set them up and dial them in with percentage values. It could just be me and that I never understood it. In addition, the Fractal has so many options that it can be mind numbing if you don’t know what everything does and if you aren’t running the desktop editor to make changes. Great product nonetheless, but takes time to get up to speed on. The Fractal always sounded good in both amps and effects and they are constantly rolling out updates.
I ended up most recently on the Quad Cortex which I find to be a good compromise although not without its limitations. I will say that I instantly felt happier when just playing a QC model as compared to what I had been using with the previous units but that’s not to say that I wasn’t happy with the other units, they just took me longer to find what I liked. I’m more interested in these units for gigging purposes so not having full MIDI support, scribble strips and more input/output options is a bit of a bummer but I do love the form factor and ease of use plus the fact that it can capture as well.
I haven’t played a TMPRO yet but I do think it’s a little closer in form factor to what I’d want, maybe a little too big still but close. It has the scribble strips, MIDI and lots of I/O along with potentiometers similar to the QC for dialing in values. I think over time when they add more amps etc and maybe even add the ability to do captures if possible, then they’d have a helluva product on their hands. Unfortunately right now, I’m interested in more high gain amp tones and their flagship amp for high gain being the EVH, has what I feel is the worst sounding model of all the devices I’ve heard. I believe I read that Fender acknowledged this and is going to fix so kudos to them.
In the end, get whatever works for your situation be it tone, connections, size, features or whatever. I don’t think any of these newer modelers sounds bad, particularly live and in a mix. Sure if you A/B them with the real amp or even with each other, you’ll notice distinct differences but all that matters is that you can get a great tone whether it sounds like a particular amp or not. If it sounds good to you, then it is good, end of story. Play it and enjoy it.
Sorry for the long comment but my fingers just kept typing, LOL!

For what the Big F charges, TLDR they price gauged themselves out. I only have a Princeton Reverb clone because they were out of stock from Fender themselves. And their modeller costs as much as my PR clone. For funsies I have an Hotone Ampero, which costs about a quarter of theirs but does a more than sufficient job. WHY, exactly, do I need anything from Fender if just about "everyone" beats them at what they do?

Do you know how much an FM9, Quad Cortex, Helix Floor, Kemper, etc. cost? They're all in the $1500-1700 range same as the TMP.
Whether the fender is your cup of tea or not is up to the individual, but it's certainly a direct competitor to these other products, hence why it's priced in line with the competition. Help me understand why so many people, seemingly you included, think it should have been like $800. Because those people sound really dumb or just completely ignorant of the market if they think that

Interesting that you mentioned the Ampero II Stomp - had one, and sold it because of the lack of useful updates. If Hotone learns their lesson and starts really enhancing the AIIS, I might buy it again. In the mean time, I bought a Hotone Ampero Mini as a secondary device. Fewere features compared to the AIIS, but half the price, so I can live with it.

It doesn't really need feature updates. It's not like they launched the product with 10 amps and 8 cabs. It already had a large list of amps, cabs, pedals etc. The only thing that was missing was scenes, and that has now been added. It's not a perfect unit, but for the price it offers great bang for buck.. and also a decent UI experience. There were some bugs with the software editor and a few other things that they took their time to fix. They are all fixed now, but I can understand it waiting for updates is frustrating for some. I'm shopping around for a high end modeller currently.. and despite costing so much more, none of them are perfect. They all have compromises, even the Fractal and Helix stuff.

There has been an explosion of modeler pedal type stuff going on now. It seems almost every day or week something new is coming out that tries to get your attention. You kind of wonder how long this can continue based on the actual demand. How many of these products just fall by the wayside and end up on reverb or some other used sales market? Not sure where the electric guitar world is going but seems many say the vintage days or gear were the best. Back then there was not that much gear to really choose from and whatever it was you had, you tried to figure out your own sound. Now it seems many think that sound should come from a magic box and manufacturers are happy to supply you with a myriad of boxes of various types to choose from. Guitar tone and music does not come from a magic box, just ask any real session player. For the most part they do not have time during a session to twiddle knobs and scroll thru menus to get the perfect tone and sound to meet some song criteria. I kind of wonder what kind of new generation of guitarist this 'gear age' will produce and what impact it will have on music in general.

I'd rather use the TMP for the majority of my playing and demo recording. When it comes to the real sessions, the real amps are reserved for the special moments when an artist is ready for their best final takes. Well the screen real estate is rather wasted and little kid looking to me and doesnt show as much as say the headrush screen does: the pictures are silly too and waste space as well. I think fender is appealing to the basic mindset but for 1700 doesnt offer nearly as much as say the fractal fm9t for the same price. Sonic Studio made a big deal out of it but my impression was, in a mix you can't tell the difference. Isolated you can hear a difference but it is not a bad difference. Like the difference between Cherry Ice Cream and Strawberry Ice Cream. They are both good. The Fender name and the fact that I have used the Tone Master amps shows me Fender knows how to do modeling. It was an easy and obvious decision to get a TMP. Plus the Tone Master FR-12 cabs.

Little bit of tweaking gets me there. But since updates are coming I know the experience will be more attractive. I have a Fender Supersonic 22 head, Fender hand-made '64 Custom Deluxe Reverb and a few other obvious choice amps that I hope the TMP will add. Plus Boss has a ducking delay on their DD-200, a vocoder on their VE-500, and a few other desirable choice effects that I hope go into the TMP updates. I have a Boss RC-500 with 15 hours of two track recording. I asked Fender to include 10 minutes of two track looping time. The microSD card slot could add a lot of memory for a few things. Since the TMP is so powerful, sampling could be included. One of my favourite high gain sounds is X-Metal from the Boss OD-200 that I asked Fender to include on future updates. @@johnnathancordy

I've been thinking about getting another modeler, Have a HELIX Floor ( my go to) & FM3 (always feel some kind of way about it though). Hoping Line6 comes up with the next generation of the HELIX soon personally.

After listening to the Tonemaster Pro I didn’t feel it moved much beyond Fender’s GTX100 modeling amp and many of the features and effects models seem to be shared. The GTX amps does have line outs so can be used without “using the solid state amp”. Oh and it’s a fraction of the cost.

Yeah, I feel the TMP is a cash-grab on Fender's part. Slick UI, but that's about it.

I agree with your sentiment. If you were looking for a car and you looked in the back and there were no passenger seats but that they would be forthcoming in a future update or the transmission only had two gears so you could only go 35 mph but that it would be updated in the future, would we want to pay a premium for such a car based on looks only? Overpriced, under delivering and my worry is that the development team maybe understaffed so who knows what the update stream might be like. Fender is a much revered company and should know better than this. It is not a start up. With that said I will likely buy the Pawn shop edition next year and not only will it be cheaper but actually a better product.

I think the difficulty you have - if any - is that it feels like you've found your tone with line 6, and you've mastered getting what you want from it. You naturally tend to use it as a yardstick and more importantly that its your gig grab rig speaks volumes. Nothing wrong with that at all and certainly needs no apology but once youre locked into a piece of gear, really know it and how to dial it in fast, theres really no motivation to make you want to go from 90% there 100% of the time to 100% there 50% of the time. Are you biased? Dont think its that, its just youve invested so much time and unlocked all the potential of line 6 its hard to be instantly impressed by simething else. Ive been there - sold gear I knew inside out for something newer then bought it back again lol!

Just my two cents. It may be that current technology used to build models has reached kind of a bar that only a complete new techniques could raise over.

So after 14 minutes of qualifying and in summary, it lacks functionality and tones and the modeling capabilities are less impressive than other modelers.

I'm mostly here to absorb those beautiful melodic phrases. Thanks John. As for gear, I do value your input as well and purchased a Tonex pedal because I liked what you, and others had to say about it and mostly, the tones. I run it through a couple of Randalls and it sounds awesome. Was looking at Suhr guitars but now I'm looking at K Lines because yours sound so great. Maybe both...we'll see.
Like I said, very happy with my Tonex so unless I don't get something out of it that I think I want, no reason to look at Tone Master, Iridium, etc.
John, I wonder if you would ever be able to do a review on any Seymour Duncan pups. I know there are allot of them (reviews) out there but it would be nice to get your take if possible. Especially the "Everything Axe" set and see how you think they stack up with your K Lines, Suhr, and Fender pups.
As for the commenter, vaughan...etc. Wow, he seems really angry. Bye vaughan...etc. Hope you find people who agree with you about all your points of view...and everlasting happiness.
Thanks for being here John. You've become a kind of "go to" for me cuz I love your playing so much.
    Cheers, P

Like the QC, it was another incomplete halo tier product. This isn't 2014, Helix, Fractal and even Kemper are fully mature platforms. You can't expect people to be happy when the new device is going to need years to catch up. Guessing NDSP didn't have much of a choice to release when they did, go now or go out of business. Fender has way deeper pockets and could easily see all the negativity NDSP garnered by going half baked.

The hx stomp is still one of my favorite effects pedals . That being said you really need to try the evh 5150 blue ch on the TMP there is just no comparison to the way it feels and sounds like a real amp especially through the Fr-12 . And yes fender needs more of everything in the TMP. Fingers crossed for quick updates. Until then i will keep the Hx for certain effects
