Should have ran the red beard filter without the top cover. Be interesting to see what it did that way.
I'd like to see what my 462 does now compared to stock. Base gasket delete, home brew muffler mod, wcs filter hanging out of the cover. I ran it with the wcs filter before I cut the cover and after I cut it it felt stronger. Sucker pulls some air for sure. And it's cooler air now instead of breathing hot air under the cover.

Joe you are 1 great saw tester compleat and leave no stone unturned and are straight as an arrow doing your testing as good or better than factory ratings keep up you honest and dead game tests
Great explanation of the dyno, Mr. J. - Automotive dyno runs are similar - many runs, tabulating and averaging out data, making adjustments, etc.
I just wanted to be sure viewers knew a bit more about behind the scenes. And how the finished graphs are made.
Most dynos you only get three pulls also. Take the best of three and call it good.

Finally a 400 ! Great video . Can't wait to see the 400 smash the 60 cc class test. I love mine.
The 400 is one stout light saw. If it can hold up for a long time it should be a winner.

At the end of the day I want a saw that cuts well,feels balanced,and that diesnt wear me out. The 400c ticks all those boxes. Smooth as silk antivibe,weighs less than most saws in its class,and is cable of both good cutting speed and can handle good size wood. It's pretty amazing how it compares to the iconic stihl 044 that everyone loved. I've never ran an 044,but it was prized for its moderate weight and size and its ability to pull a 28" bar in hardwoods or the 32" in soft. Granted today's 400c could benifit from an improved oiler, but at least nowadays we have lightweight bars and better anti vibe. I'll spend $100 to put a 461 oiler in my 400c. My previous saw was a ms441cm and with a regular 28" bar it was close to 25lb. It got the job done,but it wasnt one of stihls better designs
Just picked up my 400c with 25" bar. Absolutely lovely saw. They didnt have a light bar so its wearing a rollomatic es. Still feels better in the hand than my old 441 and cuts about the same speed. I'll probably add some better spikes and a bark box eventually. Idk about an oiled air filter. Seems like itd be a hassle.
Husqvarna 543xpg was really a dog before it broke in. After break in time it was totally different saw and actually nice one😊

Man thanks Joe for this video.. I absolutely love the 400c. I had Buxton port it and I run the RedBeard filter on it (both awesome guys). The saw is so much fun to run. I’m sure you’ve seen the vids I’ve posted of it on FB. Also thank you for showing a “ Broke in” saw compared to new as well because I’ve always wondered if a saw was any stronger after break in. I know when my 400 broke in it was like a light switch got flicked on. It was instant it seemed even my ground man heard it change. Anyways thanks for the fantastic content as usual.

WCS and RBS foam filters are hands down better than the factory junk paper filters that come on these saws

Broke in saw plus new air filter?
Thanks for the video. The foam air filter is not worth it for me, and I certainly do not want to listen to a bark box when I am using my saw.

I like them filters. They arnt a huge gain but I've noticed my saw runs cooler after buckin 3 cord compared to stock filter. Easy and only $40.
Please check the power of the most common household models, such as Husqvarna 236 and Stihl MS-180 (Classic versions without 2-mix/X-torq) It has always been strange to me how a small 32cc engine like the MS-180 realizes 1.4kW of power.

Wait a minute. Actual stock HP is greater than advertised??? I've always heard the exact opposite!
I have not had a stock 361 so I cannot comment on that. Ported 361 are an animal. And stock 400 is a very stout saw.

Often my numbers show higher than book ratings. I have no way to know and duplicate the exact factory procedure. The only numbers that's should be compared to are other numbers I have posted from saws I have done pulls on.
I love seeing real results rather than just claims. I was watching a video earlier where someone wasn't a fan of you testing the turbo crank. I reckon if it works and you're claiming that it works then you should have no fear of it being tested and the results shown. If you're selling a mod with claims and they are shown to be ineffective then maybe don't do the mods.
I personally would like to have a play at porting 1 or more of my saws just for shits and giggles but prior to doing that I would seriously consider making up a dyno rig.
Heck yeh, I wish more people would invest into a dyno setup. If you start down the path let me know, would love to help you learn from my mistakes on getting this dyno operational.

I have 1 suggestion and 1 question
1. As free advertising you should paint the bar on your dyno stand and add your business logo to it. It spends so much time in the video
2. As they since they are 2 of the exact same model why not pick the actual peak power peak about 100 or 200 rpm lower?

As for the rpm, I just kept the line the same as the multiple line graph. Slight oversight on my part. Would probably be .01-.02 higher 200 rpm lower around 9700.

Can you perhaps make a dnyo test on a modified/advanced ignition timing saw?
Would be interesting to see effects on engine performance, since it's rather easy to do.

The one "lean run" that was down on power at the high speed, WAS higher at 10300 rpm than the rest. Do you think this is significant and should be explored?

With the m tronic saws they self tune. I have no way of adjusting the tune. I left them on the graph to show how sometimes the tune does hunt around. And other times it can be stubborn and fight the entre way lol

I didn't, I would feel safe to assume the same gain out of the broken in saw.

NAH, I'm not into all that stuff, I show what I do, and I welcome others to come run on the dyno. I wish the dyno service could be free, but it takes time and shipping etc.It is a tool the whole community can benefit from.
Everyone knows the best saw is the one that starts, runs and has a sharp chain. The rest is all just personal preference.

Could you do a dyno comparison on minor mods? For example, I drilled holes in the muffler of my MS290 and removed the carb. adjustment limiters to richen it up. It seems to have 2 or 3 % more power.. Thanks
Most mild muffler mods are in the 5-7% gain range.
I'd like to see the bolt on mods. If they really gain what it claimed. Muffler mod shoot out, all the same saw. Bark box vs straight shot, chainsaw guy buckshot cover, stock cover triple outlet. Exposed air filter vs under the cover.
The used stock saw gives 5% more HP (6.24 vs 5.94) over the unused stock saw.....but if we compare the dyno for the unused stock MS 400 (taken from the "MS400 vs MS 044" video) it is only 5.63hp...which makes it a whopping 11% gain just by breaking it in.
Can these numbers be compared from one dyno run to another? Or can there be that much difference in two different units coming from the factory? Would really appreciate your take on this, Joe.
That is where it gets very hard. I would say most are within +/- 5% but if you get 1 lower and 1 upper that cones close to 10% you can compare saws from run to run. Best is to do the runs at the same time. Just like done in each of these videos.

Yes used was 100% stock.
How does the ms400 compare to a muffler modded echo cs590?
400 puts out more power. But it is also a lot more expensive.

Holzfforma saws are a hit an miss do not hold up to the abuse as commercial factory sthil saws
It’s still worth exploring the dyno results. Not everybody needs a pro chainsaw, sometimes the harbor freight option will suffice.

@@dynojoemods2764 I expect Manufacturers to inflate their numbers. Does Stihl and others do Hp pulls on Fresh or broken in saws? I would think fresh, but it is all a guess on my part.
There is not much difference in new and broken in. My 261 really woke up at the 5th tank. Some saws I might see a slight improvement. Most of the time there is not a noticeable difference.
Most that I have seen have been 3-5% bit that is a super small amount. I believe it has something to do with "feeling" some extra snap and throttle response

My old HomeLite 770 with the 36 inch bar is my go to. These plastic saws feel chinsy and week.

What's the Jcs stuff all about? I see him bitching you copied him. I've watched most of your vids never once thought you did. Only maybe the shavings in the case one, which I thought did him more favours as it disproves the person bitching on his channel about it, as does little damage really with alloy fillings🤷♂️. Is he just doing it to gain hype and subs?.. honest tho I can never tell if he's being serious😂. I like both channels. Though the nitro stuff is fun, it's just not practical for work use. Maybe the dyno is causing some jealousy in the saw world over the pond😂🤷♂️
I do agree with you that the copying isn't as obvious as jcs sais, but this video is an exception! Just a couple days ago jcs was talking about ideas what parameters one could measure with a dyno including a new vs worn in saw and bam: here's joe's video about it. that can't be coincidence, can it??

As for the case shavings. As I explained in that video, I have heard that was a test for years, and from other failed forum builders of the past. No offence was intended for anyone. And if people took it that way I am sorry.

Look through the comments in all of my "class tests" lots of people wonder/ask about power after break in.
Is it fair to test a saw with 500 hours as "broke in" or one like this with the 10-12 tanks? It got dropped off, and the new one show up.
