Scott Waldron I would like to do a beauty/life style channel. Mainly beauty videos on how to do makeup, product reviews, skin care routines, it I would like to get into vlogging & such, I know this camera will be perfect for that!
Another enjoyable video Scott. You have a gift of making very accurate and succinct reviews. I think any camera company would consider you as an asset in promoting their brand.
Thanks, I appreciate the positive comments! Is there anything else you would like to see in these? I have limited time with the camera and can only film certain things, but I'm open to trying to include more if I can. I've been getting a few down votes with no mention of why they disliked them. Maybe they don't like the opinion aspect, not sure.
Photography Banzai Thanks for replying Scott. I think what you do is spot on so I can't understand any negativity towards your content, however all opinions are subjective. Would love to see some more older cameras/lenses reviewed if you do ever get the chance but Wonderful work regardless. I always look forward to your videos.
Thanks for the intro video, I will watch others, esp. settings. I own the HX80 but have used it sparingly. Now it will be my go- to for upcoming travel, that an iphone but knowing the Sony is going to give me better images if I figure out the menus and settings!
I have sony hx90, and this camera have insane quality, the sensor is not even a 1 inch sensor but quality in daylight is so insanly good, they look like from a professional Dslr or full frame camera, the amount of bokeh you archive when zooming in to 100mm or 200mm or more is really really good. It proved to my that my gear deosnt really matter. Your skill matters 99% and your gear 1%
Hey, i'm finding a bridge for carry always with my, the question is: how can you move the time to exposuere? It has a dial or you move the time with buttons?
Cameras like these have limited physical controls due to their small size. Shutter speed, aperture, and iso won't have dedicated buttons. To access something that changes "the time" you would need to be in a mode that offers you to manually adjust the exposure time such as shutter priority or full manual mode.
I doubt this has any type of tethering capability, but I'd suggest looking over the digital manual if you are trying to figure out if it does something you want. www.sony.com/electronics/support/compact-cameras-dsc-hx-series/dsc-hx80#manuals
Having a baby and I just want a camera for little home videos. Is this a good camera? Please help - I’m so confused. I don’t want to use my smartphone..
It's okay. Pretty sure I had a few video clips/photos in this as a example of how it looks. Just don't expect better quality than a decent phone. Small cheaper cameras are nearly obsolete for stuff like that now that phones caught up quality wise.
No microphone input, "contrast detect" autofocus, 30 minute per video clip limit, and the maximum view in the lens isn't that wide. Consider using your smartphone if it is decent because you'd probably get a better result. Or save up to get a more serious camera like the Sony A6100, Canon M50 Mark II, or Fujifilm X-T200. My main suggestion would be the A6100 because it does not have a time limit per video clip which would work with long videos like mukbangs. There are very few cameras that don't have the clip limit. Of course if you go a really long time, you would need to get an AC adapter for the camera because batteries only last so long.
These two cameras have a faster aperture range with the same sensor size and around the same price: Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS100: B&H: bhpho.to/2PePbxc Amazon: amzn.to/3cUnPon Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300: B&H: bhpho.to/3959GUp Amazon: amzn.to/3c59oyI
Do you know if i can use this camera to make videos for TikTok? I will need the video to be in portrait and like a certain size for TikTok, can I do this setting on this camera?
As far as I know it's not possible to use the camera as a webcam. For that one I was using the Nikon D750, 20mm f/1.8 lens, and an LED light. I also used a cheap off-brand action camera. I have a video about it: ua-cam.com/video/bO_EUsNHPz4/v-deo.html
Sorry, I haven't used this in years since using it for the video. It has WIFI/Bluetooth and was made to work with their older phone app called "PlayMemories". Pretty much all apps will support some form of transferring photos to the phone. It's possible that their newer app called "Imaging Edge" supports this camera, but I don't have any way to confirm that. PlayMemories for Android: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.sony.tablet.PersonalSpace Imaging Edge for Android: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sony.playmemories.mobile They also have it for iPhone, but I don't personally know anything about those phones at all.
Scott Waldron actually just bought one from Henry’s , with tax it was around $370. Would of liked a cannon g7x of course but it’s more then double the price of this. I got an iPhone XR not sure how this phone camera compares to the sony one I just got. I do know the screen display on my phone is pretty bad though.

Hey I actually live in rockford illinois. Is there a way we could meet up I bought the camera at best buy and want to know the EZ way to fix all settings and have it ready for vlogging
I only used this camera for like an hour two years ago to film the video. You probably know more about the camera than I do at this point. I'd say start with a look through the manual and then just start filming. Try to produce a video one or two days a week and you should be a pro with it in no time. I'm kind of anti-social and already do a ton of free tech support through the channel constantly, so the idea of in-person tech support doesn't sound great, lol. Sorry man. Maybe someday if you stick with it and produce for your channel we can collaborate on something. It's a rough process. I'm not in a great place between some growth on the channel but still like 10 times too small to survive with this work.
Scott Waldron oh ok. Do u still live in rockford? Im also trying to help my channel grow. Maybe we could meet up one day. You are the first youtuber i hear mention rockford illinois so i kinda figured you live down here
I was curious so I looked at Best Buy's price on the HX80. Ahh, did you actually pay $320 for a HX80? That seems overpriced. It has a tiny sensor and contrast based autofocus. Something like a Canon M100 would be a lot better for vlogging quality wise. Although, both of them don't have a mic port so you can't use an external mic on either of them. B&H has the M100 for $350 right now. Not sure what camera would have a mic port at a low price. Maybe you could return that HX80. If not, the HX80 should be fine to get started. Though my main suggestion would be a simple recent smartphone to get started. It's all about content. MrBeast spent years iterating on ideas for videos before something clicked. I'm over 9 years in on this channel and still fighting to get more than 50 views on some of the videos I make. Details on the M100: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1368608-REG/canon_eos_m100_mirrorless_digital.html
I checked out your videos. There is a group in Rockford I know of that produce content I think is more in line with your work. I don't know them personally, but here is their channel (167k subscribers): ua-cam.com/users/notebookmovies

Hi everyone! My girlfriend has a dsc h400 she's had for about 2 years now and doesn't use it very much. She's noticed recently that at random it will toggle modes but always comes back to the mode she's on. For example she's on auto, it will go to down 1 to scene or up one to program but always comes back to what's on the knob. The knob still feels secure, not loose at all. Anyone have any suggestions?
To benefit from a card that fast? Unlikely considering it only does 1080p video. I don't know specifics like that, maybe email Sony. That said, I dont generally see why any uhs-i card wouldn't work fine. uhs-ii are the ones with two rows of pins. I have a lexar uhs-ii card that has some compatibility issues.
Flash in cameras are meant for still photos, not video. Camera flash provides a burst of light, not a continuous light. I do not know of any cameras with a LED continuous light.
@@b.trill6868 With some type of 1/4th-20 tripod bracket you could attach a light, but the camera itself has no "hot shoe" where video lights usually attach.
B.trill 6 what I do is got any bright flash light, get one of those camera bike mounts, stick the flashlight in the hole where the handlebar would go, and the camera on top. Boom. Works great. I have used it exactly for exploring at night
I didn't try that. I'll say maybe and it depends on what you want to do with it. Look over the FAQ questions on Sony's website: www.sony.com/electronics/support/compact-cameras-dsc-hx-series/dsc-hx80/results?query=power That webpage says: "Sets whether to supply power via the micro USB cable when the product is connected to a computer or an USB device." and "If you use an AC-UD10/AC-UD11 AC adaptor (sold separately), power can be supplied to the product via USB cable even when the battery pack is not inserted." You can definitely have a static photography setup with something like and older used DSLR and a AC adapter DC coupler (replaces the battery). A DSLR will have significantly higher image quality too. Sites like KEH, MPB, UsedPhotoPro, and others sell used gear with a warranty usually. Are you talking photography or video? Video is a whole different beast. This won't be good. Maybe a GoPro that can take external power.
@@micksguitarsarecool I can't think of anything off hand that can do long video recordings and take external power around $350. Maybe an actual camcorder. No idea on specific ones.
Thanks Scott. Quick question...immediately after snapping several pics in a row, the camera displays all the images (thumbnails) on the screen (says "processing") and delays my ability to continue snapping pics. Can you tell how to turn that function off? I've been searching the menu but can't figure it out. There was something that said "2 second display" but I wasn't able to turn it off...due to mode or something. Not even certain that is how to turn off the displayed thumbnails. Thanks for any help. I will check the manual again too. ;) update: i think the question i want answered....can you turn off the auto preview when in continuous shooting mode? seems silly to have preview images automatically pop up on display no matter what mode. seemingly it can be turned off in single mode shooting but not continuous mode.
The setting appears to be here and is called "auto review": Menu, Custom settings (cogwheel icon), Auto Review and then set it to off. helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1620/v1/en/contents/TP0000576801.html If that doesn't do what you want then the camera is probably hitting the buffer which tends to lock the camera in the case of Sony. Maybe try a faster memory card.
@@ScottJWaldron Thanks for taking time to respond. i had already found the info you linked to. my card is sandisk ultra plus 80mb/s . not sure about the buffer theory as it (in continuous mode) will "auto review" whether it's 2 images or 10. Since i don't have another faster memory card handy..i will experiment by reducing image size to see if it processes faster and turns off the auto review. guessing it won't because in the camera's menu it says can't turn off this function in continuous mode. i'll have to watch your video again to see if you snapped several pics in a row (continuous) or just single shots. i remember noting that the auto review thumbnails did not pop up. Thanks again. update: reducing image size didn't eliminate issue.
@@mikegryn If "off" for that setting shows the picture taken there is nothing you can do I assume. If it's some type of pop-up message that is another thing. I used the camera for an hour or two to make the video so you clearly have a lot more experience with it than me. My guess is that the camera is simply slow handling multiple photos at once. I doubt a better card would help that much unless yours is not a legit card (fakes are a thing sometimes). Continuous modes are not something I test with these camera shop videos because I don't want to put their equipment through excessive use.
It uses the Sony NP-BX1. You have a lot of options. Here is a search for that battery on my affiliate B&H: bhpho.to/3FaXvms Or Amazon (also an affiliate): amzn.to/3wX3E2Z Make certain it's for the "Sony NP-BX1" before buying. Search results might throw in some random stuff.
Sorry, I don't take many photos with the cameras for these videos because they are demo units and I am not usually able to leave the shop with them. There should be a link to the few photos on flickr in the description. Although that's not going to work in the future because Flickr is limiting free accounts to 1000 photos soon.
I used the camera for a short time to make this video. Battery isn't something I can test. It is rated between 350 to 390 photos or 185 minutes of video, but that all depends in how you use it.
What are you trying to achieve? Do you need something really small? How much do you want to spend? This has a tiny sensor in it, though these types of cameras haven't change a lot in a long time so it's no better or worse than any other ones like it that are newer. A lot of these types of cameras don't offer much if any image quality benefit over a good smartphone these days. You would have to spend a lot more on something like a RX100 series camera to get a bump in image quality. Otherwise cameras like the Canon EOS M100 are a good value with a much larger sensor.
@@ScottJWaldron Thank you! I'm looking for something small so it be easy to carry around when i go travel, good picture quality and price range from $100-$500

Would this camera be good to use for sports/action shots? Would love to use it snowboarding or out on my kayak where I need a good zoom and have the ability to get shots of movement.
Sorry, action photo/video is not something I'm able to try out in these videos. Snowboarding and kayaking sound like extreme conditions. A camera like this has no form of weather resistance. There are waterproof and drop-resistant cameras around. I haven't used any lately, but the Olympus Tough series of cameras are well regarded (relatively speaking for small sensor cameras such as this Sony and most waterproof cameras). The TG-6 is the latest model on B&H: bhpho.to/2sMOBw0 A video by a youtuber I like: ua-cam.com/video/BKkXYCRqTws/v-deo.html A different video that compares a few waterproof cameras: ua-cam.com/video/1LK3CRrpxdo/v-deo.html
@@ScottJWaldron sorry, I should have been more clear in my question. I was asking about photo quality in sport mode for action shots. I'm trying to find a small point and shoot camera that fits easily in a pocket which will take clear action shots from a distance. I have an Olympus Tough series, but am not happy with the quality of the shots and with the zoom. When you're on the hill getting a shot of a friend coming down the slope, you end up with blurry photos and the person is so small they look like a dot. For kayaking, I would put the camera in a small Pelican case which would get it the waterproofing it needs.
If the person looks like a blurry dot at full zoom on a TG camera (100mm at full zoom), you are going to have some difficulties finding a camera that can do what you want and be small. Also, part of it is probably technique (using a faster shutter speed if the camera supports any level of control because your subject is moving quickly). The Sony RX100 VII has a 200mm eqv. lens, but that probably isn't enough range and it's pricey. There are very few small cameras with fast autofocus and a larger sensor. You could check out the Sony RX10 series, but those are a lot bigger.
@@ScottJWaldron the concerns you have are exactly what mine are. The Olympus TS camera I have is a problem because it only has a 4x zoom which isn't nearly enough. I felt that moving to a 30x zoom would be a lot better, but didn't know if the fast moving object would make it difficult to capture. I was looking at the RX10 series, but feel that it's just too big. I have an SLR that I use as my main camera, but need a very small camera for these types of shots. I might have to just buy one and give it a try to see what it can do.
I looked around a bit. There is a Canon PowerShot G3 X has a 25x zoom with a 1" sensor and appears to be smaller than most cameras like this. bhpho.to/3aAPdGf There is also the Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS200 with 15x zoom and a 1" sensor that's even smaller. bhpho.to/30Lo9PN
No idea, that's not something I tested or remember. Check Sony's website for specific details. Maybe download the online manual for the camera. www.sony.com/electronics/cyber-shot-compact-cameras/dsc-hx80
Do chrome books run Android apps? I've never used one. If it can then you could try Sony's "imaging edge" app. play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sony.playmemories.mobile
Hi Darcie, it looks like there are various photos from this camera on Flickr. On each photo detail page in this linked search, it should show what camera it is from (check each one you look at to make sure it was actually taken with the HX80): www.flickr.com/search/?text=Sony%20DSC-HX80&view_all=1 I only have limited time with these hands-on camera videos, so I can't take many photos.
Hi Darcie. I have the Sony HX 80 and I can say with all honesty that you will not be disappointed with the results. I use mine for landscapes and I'm very pleased with the I'm getting. Hope this helps
Hi. I am very confused! Which one chose Sony HX80 or Canon SX730 HS? I like taking pictures and not interested in video and do not know which camera I chose? Please help.
If you want to grow with a camera, maybe something like the Canon EOS M100 could be a good option to consider if you can spend more. It won't have the range of those two cameras with the starter lens (15-45mm), but it gives you a good starting point and it's pretty easy to use. It will allow you to use different lenses once you want to do that. The two all-in-one cameras are probably so similar that it's a toss up. They look extremely similar specification wise. You would need to get your hands on both of them to really decide on one or the other.
I see. It sounds like they would be a good fit for you then. The camera shop I film at doesn't have the Canon point and shoot cameras, though these days I think Sony tends to give a little bit more for the money. I'd suggest trying to find either of them locally to try it to see if things like the menu systems fit your style.
It's officially rated 360 to 390 photos per charge depending on if you use the viewfinder or back screen. This isn't sonething I can personally test in these videos.
First thanks for the super succinct and informative review! I'm looking to buy a decently priced camera mainly for simple video shooting, but I do need clear audio (video announcements, interviews, things like that). I saw in another comment that there is no separate jack for a mic, is the sound quality from the built in mic good enough in your opinion?
Sorry, I didn't use the camera enough to give you a valid opinion on the in-camera microphone. Producing quality videos isn't easy and audio is especially difficult. Learning about how to produce good results would help you a lot more than a specific piece of gear. That said, it will depend on what you consider good enough. The general idea with voice audio is getting the microphone close to the person. Either with a lapel mic+recorder (syncing that audio to the video afterward) or some type of boom arm with a mic on it. I use the boom arm approach and connect that mic to my canon eos m50 cameras because it is easier than syncing audio in software.
Not likely. I skimmed Sony's site and found this FAQ article: www.sony.com/electronics/support/compact-cameras-dsc-hx-series/dsc-hx80/articles/00028227 It does have hdmi, but I can't recall if it's possible to clear all of the display information off of the screen and in that case you would also need a hdmi capture device (which would cost more than a decent webcam).
@@yoichifranck3753 What are you trying to do with the camera? At the very least the HX80 has a screen that can flip forward and it can do true 1080p 60 fps. Honestly, neither camera is going to be amazing. Recent smartphones would probably do a better job unless you need to record footage from a long distance away.
@@ScottJWaldron yeah man before all thanks for your reply well i want a camera that allow me to shot and record videos with good quality it seems the HX80 is better but do you think the zoom difference is huge 40x and 30x
@@yoichifranck3753 Do you really need a long zoom lens? I can't think of much I'd try to record at those distances on either camera and to get a steady decent clip it would be difficult. Autofocus on these cameras isn't that great, especially in video mode and when being used at long telephoto. All I'm saying is don't put too much expectation into either of these cameras. Video autofocus is finally getting good in some cameras, but it's the ones with "phase detect" on the sensor like the super expensive RX100 VII or larger mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses.
Sounds like one or more of the settings is in manual mode. The maximum aperture on the lens changes through the zoom, so as you zoom more the hole (aperture) in the lens gets smaller. Look through the camera's manual about aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to learn how to change them. When in doubt, switch to the full automatic mode. I am on my phone, so not sure what the auto mode icon would look like.
This camera does not have a hotshoe. It also does not have a mic port (as far as I can remember). If you buy a seperate audio recorder and a lapel microphone you could record higher quality audio and sync in a video editor. Though, that would be a lot of effort.
@@adeenachoudhry3157 Thanks Adeena. If you are looking to do vlogging, there are not many low cost compact options with microphone inputs. Some people put little wind muffs over the built-in mics with cameras like these ones. I haven't tried that. The Canon EOS M50 that I use is larger but it can take a mic easily. It's $650 with a lens. I have a bunch of videos on that camera.
Yes, the RX100 is a 1" sensor camera with an f1.8-f2.8 lens (excluding the mk VI that has a longer and slower lens). The HX80 is a 1/2.3" sensor camera with a f3.5-6.4 lens. That means the RX100 sensor is 116mm^2 in size and the HX80 is 28.5mm^2. Plus, it has a lens that lets in less light. If image quality is a consideration at all then I'd always go with the RX100 series over any of their smaller sensor digicams. Besides that, the HX80 can't even make RAW formatted photos. I'm not sure where you could get the RX100 mkIII for the price of this camera, but even the original RX100 will take much higher quality photos than a digicam like this. I guess if having a compact camera with a long lens is your only consideration then do whatever feels right to you.
Ashley Christine hey! Hope you’ve solved your problem :) but if not, I have had the same issue. I found out that the best way for me to upload my files would be by just using the SD memory card and inserting it on the side. It’s the only way I could upload them on my laptop. Take care ♥️
That would depend on if Sony's iPhone app can do video transfer. I haven't used it. Is it a recent iPhone? I'd think your phone can take photos just as nice as this camera. The main reason to get this camera in that case would be the long zoom lens on it. If you want a big jump in image quality you will need to go for a camera like the RX100 series or something even more like the A6100/ A6400/ A7iii from Sony.
Scott Waldron can you try for me? cause i think i’m gonna get this camera for my youtube channel, but i need to be able to the cam footage to my phone & edit the footage on my phone
Sorry, I don't own an Apple phone and I film these videos at my local camera shop, so I don't own this Sony camera. From what I can tell it allows for mp4 video files to be transferred. I see a Sony support page, so maybe you can contact them: www.sony.net/SonyInfo/Support/
You would probably be better off with a recent smartphone if money is a consideration. If you want a dedicated camera and size isn't an issue I'd suggest the Canon EOS M50. If you need something small then the Sony RX100 III, IV or Va but those are expensive and don't have a microphone port. The lens on the HX80 is "slow" and the sensor isn't any bigger than a good smartphone, so I don't think low light performance would be great. It also don't have a microphone port.
@@ScottJWaldron I'm looking for a cheap camera for ghost hunting maybe a SLR with a good low light or a selfie screen mirror less this is probably the best option I've came across if I was to rig it up with a light
I'd probably go with the Sony in this case. If I were buying one I'd go for whichever one I could find cheap unless I really needed the ~4k video that the A900 has.
Thanks Scott, searching in a web site I found a Nikon B500 and the price it's the same than the Sony HX80, Do you think Nikon it's better? In quality and prices balance, which one you choose?
I really need a vlogging camera but I'm on a budget because I'll get it for myself.. I have an android phone and I know how to edit on it, so I'm thinking of buying this camera. But I'm also thinking of buying an iphone 6 because the camera isn't that bad and it also has such good editing apps. What do you suggest me to get?
I don't have any experience with editing video on phones. If you want to edit the video on phones instead of a computer then you are probably better off using a phone for vlogging. In that case look for a phone with a good camera on the screen side. What about your current phone is lacking when you try to make vlogs? I use my LG Stylo 3 to record for my IGTV channel ( example: instagram.com/tv/BliibyUlCSH/ ), which works okay. It's a cheap phone and quality isn't amazing, but the audio quality is decent. This Sony camera has the flip screen and it would probably be okay for vlogging, although I never tested the microphone so I don't know how good that is.

Depends on what you are trying to do. I don't have much experience with livestreaming. Elgato has a compatibility list for their HDMI capture devices: www.elgato.com/en/gaming/cam-link/camera-check Sony has a lot of their exchangeable lens cameras on the list. The A5100 is probably the cheapest. You will want to get something to power the camera with a wall outlet. Batteries will only last an hour or two usually. There are some cameras that can act like a webcam through usb. With the virus situation some companies released beta software but compatibility with applications might not be perfect. I did test out the Canon beta webcam utility with the M50 I have. That said, I did enjoy this little camera even though it doesn't record in raw, which could have helped a bit. I really needed a better camera for video and was considering this because the shake reduction/AF, but I went with a Canon SL2 instead because the AF in video is almost perfect. This camera's lens wasn't as wide as I wanted for video.
Yes, it will record audio and video together. I might have mentioned "no mic jack" or something like that. Some cameras have a little 3.5mm port that allows people to use a separate microphone from the one inside the camera. This camera doesn't have that feature, but it will use its own internal microphone.
Budget? It might be okay, but there are more versatile cameras out there like ones that have a microphone port to get better audio. I use the Canon EOS M50 for these videos.
Considering the sensor size of 1/2.3", not great compared to anything in the one inch or larger sensor size (Sony RX100, DSLRs, etc). I'd say most cameras of this range are slightly better than average cellphones with the benefit of a large telephoto lens and camera specific features.
There is a phone app called "PlayMemories Mobile", but no idea how much range you could get from the camera to the phone. The drone would need to be capable of hauling a camera that's twice the weight of a GoPro. You would also need to consider mounting.
Only thing i hate these type of cameras thry dont support touchscreen then dslr. As a photographer ite feel better easier to tap touch to what object your focusing on and for video.
I like this camera and all its features and convenience in its size but if you own something like a Sony a7R2 you are going to be disappointed. I was attracted by the 24-720mm zoom range for my surfing videos but unfortunately the quality just is not there. UA-cam usually rates my videos as HD but from this camera SD. Love using that 720mm reach with up close and dramatic surfing footage but results leave me wanting better quality. I keep asking why couldn't Sony use a bigger sensor. Maybe I just got a defective one, so sadly I will have to return it. ua-cam.com/video/7kht3tr7DiU/v-deo.html
Is that video you linked from the HX80? It looks okay. I see that 1080p 60fps is available in it. The SD/HD/4K thing on UA-cam is based on resolution (eg. 1920x1080 means HD). Also, sometimes anything over SD takes a while for the system to process. It's possible you didn't give their systems enough time to generate HD, or maybe you had uploaded in a lower resolution accidently.
@@ScottJWaldron Thanks Scott. No accidents and all settings look OK. Looks good on my big screen HD TV so must be OK on cell phones. Its just that the surfers look really soft def on my desktop. But I have decided to keep it because of its great reach. Lets face it a 720mm zoom at that price (and convenience) is hard to pass up.
I think it isnt. A) small tiny Smartphone lens (not as good quality lens) B) Not really any zoom range C) less manual control If you know how to juse your gear than you can do so much more with a camera tham any Smartphones
@Levian & Z Nachtschatten Depends on the phone. Some have larger sensors and faster aperture prime lenses compared to this at a given focal length. I can take DNG RAW photos with my older LG phone and the Open Camera app. This camera can't. To each their own, but phones have a lot of options and capabilities these days.
@@ScottJWaldron all smarphone cameras I have seen in the latest models either look artificial or fake, in my opinion smarphone Cameras haven't evolved since 2017 in terms of quality, except maybe the Xperia as the only (but only a bit in my opinion) for other manufacturers, all that really changed just a bit more lenses and zoom but the quality didn't actually change. Smartphone cameras will never replace camera for me. They always will look face if they put the camera in a slim smartphone body that hasn't even enough space to put atleast a decent size lens inside Smartphone cameras = they are horrible.
I don't get why anyone would give this video a thumbs down. Scott, thanks for the review. It is very very helpful.

Hi, I'm not using my camera because it's hard to understand the settings. But I will try it since you made it look simple.
With anything like this it takes time. Definitely skim the manual or look things up as needed.
Hey, i'm finding a bridge for carry always with my, the question is: how can you move the time to exposuere? It has a dial or you move the time with buttons?
Cameras like these have limited physical controls due to their small size. Shutter speed, aperture, and iso won't have dedicated buttons. To access something that changes "the time" you would need to be in a mode that offers you to manually adjust the exposure time such as shutter priority or full manual mode.
thanks for the video, i did not even realize you have to pull out the view finder. i thought mine was just broken or I had bad vision at close range
Thanks for the review, I’m thinking of using this for stop motion, if I can, do you have any knowledge on that?
I doubt this has any type of tethering capability, but I'd suggest looking over the digital manual if you are trying to figure out if it does something you want.

It's okay. Pretty sure I had a few video clips/photos in this as a example of how it looks. Just don't expect better quality than a decent phone. Small cheaper cameras are nearly obsolete for stuff like that now that phones caught up quality wise.
Scott Waldron thank you! Appreciate your response.
Looking to get my first camera for my channel would this be the best option if I was doing like mukbangs / food challenges or small talks?

Does it have WiFi to transfer pictures and videos to phone?
Sorry, I haven't used this in years since using it for the video. It has WIFI/Bluetooth and was made to work with their older phone app called "PlayMemories". Pretty much all apps will support some form of transferring photos to the phone. It's possible that their newer app called "Imaging Edge" supports this camera, but I don't have any way to confirm that.

Not possible
hey can you use this while plugged in to power? thinking of a static camera setup. thanks!
I didn't try that. I'll say maybe and it depends on what you want to do with it. Look over the FAQ questions on Sony's website:
www.sony.com/electronics/support/compact-cameras-dsc-hx-series/dsc-hx80/results?query=power
That webpage says:
"Sets whether to supply power via the micro USB cable when the product is connected to a computer or an USB device." and "If you use an AC-UD10/AC-UD11 AC adaptor (sold separately), power can be supplied to the product via USB cable even when the battery pack is not inserted."
You can definitely have a static photography setup with something like and older used DSLR and a AC adapter DC coupler (replaces the battery). A DSLR will have significantly higher image quality too. Sites like KEH, MPB, UsedPhotoPro, and others sell used gear with a warranty usually.
Are you talking photography or video? Video is a whole different beast. This won't be good. Maybe a GoPro that can take external power.
@@ScottJWaldron Wanting video exclusively, thanks for the info. Any recommendations for something around that price range for video setup?

The setting appears to be here and is called "auto review": Menu, Custom settings (cogwheel icon), Auto Review and then set it to off.
helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1620/v1/en/contents/TP0000576801.html
If that doesn't do what you want then the camera is probably hitting the buffer which tends to lock the camera in the case of Sony.

I used the camera for a short time to make this video. Battery isn't something I can test. It is rated between 350 to 390 photos or 185 minutes of video, but that all depends in how you use it.
@@ScottJWaldron thank you. is this camera still worth buying in late 2019?

There is a Canon PowerShot G3 X has a 25x zoom with a 1" sensor and appears to be smaller than most cameras like this. bhpho.to/3aAPdGf

@@ScottJWaldron Thank you. I'm interested in a point and shoot cameras with big optical zoom to use in travel.
I see. It sounds like they would be a good fit for you then. The camera shop I film at doesn't have the Canon point and shoot cameras, though these days I think Sony tends to give a little bit more for the money. I'd suggest trying to find either of them locally to try it to see if things like the menu systems fit your style.

No, flash is for photos and it can only do a very short burst of light.

Dude its not smartphone....
@@ScottJWaldron Thanks a lot for the reply! Looks like I'll have to look into a bit but really appreciate the input.
hi! Quick question, Can you use this camera as a webcam? without any other devices ? just plugging it in and what not?
thanks!
Not likely. I skimmed Sony's site and found this FAQ article: www.sony.com/electronics/support/compact-cameras-dsc-hx-series/dsc-hx80/articles/00028227
It does have hdmi, but I can't recall if it's possible to clear all of the display information off of the screen and in that case you would also need a hdmi capture device (which would cost more than a decent webcam).
coool review which one should i choose this one or the B500 can you recomend me any
Those are very different cameras. I'd go with the smaller one.
@@ScottJWaldron which one should be better for video zoom I mean clear videos
I have this cam. Can someone tell me why when I zoom in (get too close). It gets darker
Sensor its super small like earth size to the sun.
Can I mount a microphone on top or not?
This camera does not have a hotshoe. It also does not have a mic port (as far as I can remember). If you buy a seperate audio recorder and a lapel microphone you could record higher quality audio and sync in a video editor. Though, that would be a lot of effort.
Scott Waldron thx for the quick response! Probably won’t get it but great review!
Adeena Choudhry No mounts or mic inputs or outputs on this camera.
Im thinking this or RX100 gen 3. That zoom seems very attractive to me and price difference is small.
The RX100 is significantly better. It has a larger sensor, faster lens, and more features.
@@ScottJWaldron Even considering lesser zoom? I plan to shoot mostly in daytime.
Does the video get grainy on it.
Depends on your expectations, but yes I think it would suffer from grainy video in dark conditions. Similar to a current smartphone.
hey i was wondering if you knew how to upload AVCHD onto a mac? whenever i import files, unless they're mp4 they won't load :(
Sorry, I don't use mac computers. I would assume Apple's "Quicktime" software could play it.
Ashley Christine hey! Hope you’ve solved your problem :) but if not, I have had the same issue. I found out that the best way for me to upload my files would be by just using the SD memory card and inserting it on the side. It’s the only way I could upload them on my laptop.
Take care ♥️
Scott Waldron what do you use
can you get footage from that camera into a iPhone?
This appears to be the app: apps.apple.com/us/app/imaging-edge-mobile/id489191124
That app links to a Sony support page:
support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/iemobile/en/
That links to this compatibility page:
support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/cscs/pmm/products.php?area=gb&lang=en&mnt=1
Look for the HX80 on there to verify things. From what I can tell it allows for mp4 video files to be transferred.
I see a Sony support page, so maybe you can contact them: www.sony.net/SonyInfo/Support/
I plan on vlogging for grand dinners and lots of concerts, but want the best clear quality... do you recommend this for darker type filming events ?
You would probably be better off with a recent smartphone if money is a consideration. If you want a dedicated camera and size isn't an issue I'd suggest the Canon EOS M50. If you need something small then the Sony RX100 III, IV or Va but those are expensive and don't have a microphone port. The lens on the HX80 is "slow" and the sensor isn't any bigger than a good smartphone, so I don't think low light performance would be great. It also don't have a microphone port.
What's the iso capability
80-3200, don't expect much from high iso on a camera like this. electronics.sony.com/imaging/compact-cameras/all-compact-cameras/p/dschx80-b

HX80 vs Nikon A900?
Which one is better?
I'd probably go with the Sony in this case. If I were buying one I'd go for whichever one I could find cheap unless I really needed the ~4k video that the A900 has.
Thanks Scott, searching in a web site I found a Nikon B500 and the price it's the same than the Sony HX80, Do you think Nikon it's better? In quality and prices balance, which one you choose?
I have a video on the B500. It's okay, but the HX80 is smaller and has a viewfinder. ua-cam.com/video/XTt_PKhHRC4/v-deo.html

@@ScottJWaldron thanks so much!! So should I get a new camara? Or an extra device? Thanks for answering! Your videos are awesome!
Depends on what you are trying to do. I don't have much experience with livestreaming. Elgato has a compatibility list for their HDMI capture devices: www.elgato.com/en/gaming/cam-link/camera-check
Sony has a lot of their exchangeable lens cameras on the list.
It seemed to work okay with OBS, but audio needs to be captured with an external microphone. www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/self-help-center/eos-webcam-utility/

How do you find out how much space is on sd car? The thing that I think initiates it it says in top left corner says 9999. What gives?
How big is your card?
@@ScottJWaldron 64GB
10,000+ photos on that card sounds about right (the display probably is only capable of showing 4 digits). The example photos I took with that camera range from 5 to 6.5 megabytes per image. (there are 1024 megabytes in one gigabyte and your card has 64 gigabytes).
Dude its a sony camera.... They use less mb or gb then canon cameras.
More space
Great video! quick question. does this camera take pictures while recording videos at the same time?
That's not something I tested. Maybe send Sony an email or social media message.
haha the zoom alone kills my iPhone hands down; add all other features and it totally kills my iPhone 8; not that iPhone can't take on occasion ok picture but comparing this beast to iPhone is ridiculous let alone bigger sensor cameras
+volim volim The gap from a sensor standpoint is surprisingly close these days between cameras with this sensor size and "flagship" phones (Pixel 2 being best at the moment according to MKBHD). That said, I did enjoy this little camera even though it doesn't record in raw, which could have helped a bit. I really needed a better camera for video and was considering this because the shake reduction/AF, but I went with a Canon SL2 instead because the AF in video is almost perfect. This camera's lens wasn't as wide as I wanted for video.
is there any possibility for me to add a microphone to it for vlogging purposes ?
No microphone port and as far as I can tell it doesn't has any type of sony accessory port.
Dont know much about cameras- getting confused, when I'm recording will it record audio as well?
Yes, it will record audio and video together. I might have mentioned "no mic jack" or something like that. Some cameras have a little 3.5mm port that allows people to use a separate microphone from the one inside the camera. This camera doesn't have that feature, but it will use its own internal microphone.
Well I'm trying to get a camera to start recording for youtube and j think this is the one
Budget? It might be okay, but there are more versatile cameras out there like ones that have a microphone port to get better audio. I use the Canon EOS M50 for these videos.
@@ScottJWaldron okay thank you sm for replying to ne
Does it have WiFi
Yes, it has 802.11b/g/n WIFI with NFC so you can connect to their "Sony PlayMemories" phone app.
How’s the low light?
Considering the sensor size of 1/2.3", not great compared to anything in the one inch or larger sensor size (Sony RX100, DSLRs, etc). I'd say most cameras of this range are slightly better than average cellphones with the benefit of a large telephoto lens and camera specific features.
Can i put this on a drone and see live thru cam?
There is a phone app called "PlayMemories Mobile", but no idea how much range you could get from the camera to the phone. The drone would need to be capable of hauling a camera that's twice the weight of a GoPro. You would also need to consider mounting.
Only thing i hate these type of cameras thry dont support touchscreen then dslr.
As a photographer ite feel better easier to tap touch to what object your focusing on and for video.
In my Option a Touchscreen has nothing to do on an camera, its more anoying than useful

Just bought iy for 230$ canadian im asooo happy

Wow, nice!
I’m late sorry. But I’m the 999th like! 😂
Nice ;)
Think my iPhone 11 Pro Max camera is comparable
Yeah, I agree there. Smartphones have gotten really good!
I think it isnt.
A) small tiny Smartphone lens (not as good quality lens)
B) Not really any zoom range
C) less manual control
If you know how to juse your gear than you can do so much more with a camera tham any Smartphones
But for people that just simple want to take pictures, Smartphones are the way to go.
They always will look face if they put the camera in a slim smartphone body that hasn't even enough space to put atleast a decent size lens inside
