    Two other very interesting features. Has a totally silent shutter mode and a burst rate of 10fps. Travels well. I've had the camera for 3 months and have been very impressed.

    It nice to find a review which takes in most of the camera features and explains it in a mater of fact content. I have had the HX90V for 1 1/2 years and the HX50V for a year before that. It is a terrific camera and has features I am still learning to use. Be sure to keep the firmware up to date as Sony has made a number of enhancements. Perhaps in a different video you can go over the custom Fn settings and custom push buttons which really add a lot to speed and ease of access of this camera. I also think demonstrating the white balance with a grey card or the temperature K setting would assist people shooting in less then a sunny day. After doing this with mine, my pictures were much improved especially in a dark green forest.

    The bad part about selfie is that a lot of times, you just don't have all the controls of what's going on right BEHIND you.
    5:54 Sachi~! No more self-cleaning in public~! Hahahaaa, just kidding. Great review. Thnx.

    I'm on a budget and I'm genuinely unsure whether I would like this camera or not. I was considering the much older Lumix FZ70 or the FZ200, but at the same time, I've been fascinated by the Sony RX100s, so this, to me, might be the next best thing...

    Great video as always John - happy to see this vide was longer - you do such a nice job I often miss that some of the videos have not been longer and bit more detailed -
    I do have the HX50v and of course a must have but it could use some updates - so now I am happy to see the successor is thinner - and Yes EVF which is awesome - as EVF is so often needed on a sunny day - I rather have one that is not super good vs not having one at all - Also very very glad to see that the menu system is now the same as the rest - it was just stupid how they and one for DSLRs and then another for NEX and another for their small point and shoot cameras - So a real killer super zoom in a tiny package - just wish it recorded in RAW which I guess is my only drawback besides my Standard Complain about Sony cameras and that is No Touch LCD / Touch Shutter - Sony makes millions of devices with Touch LCD and the world uses Touch LCD - so why not on their cameras ?? - Panasonic does the best combo I think of Touch LCD / Touch Shutter but also buttons and Dials - Samsung has a great Touch system but not as well organized and often not enough dials and buttons -
    The A6000 and A7xx are doing better now with more buttons and better designed menu but Still No Touch LCD - I guess we will never see it on a Sony and of course never on a Fuji, i think it is against their religion :) So I think I will be upgrading my HX50v now

    I was thinking of this camera as one candidate for an upcoming Canada-Alaska cruise at the end of this summer, but their is one design feature that negated my considering this camera. It is the popup EVF. It's a design that requires one to pop up EVF, then pull it back towards you every time you want to use it. Then, you need to reverse the process each time to tuck it away. I think that is a very poor design. For that reason, sorry Sony, this time I am thinking of Panasonic's offering, the TZ-70. (ZS50 I think for folks over in the U.S.). It has a fixed EVF as well as one would normally expect. I have the Alpha 6000 as well, but I want something that will give me zoom on the occasions I want to use zoom. Alternatively, I could consider the HX400V which does have a properly fixed EVF and provides even more zoom out to 1200mm.

    How good is the GPS?
    1) Does it record wrong GPS data instead of leaving it blank when no GPS signal available?
    2) How long does it take to locate GPS when it has just started up (outdoor in perfect condition)?
    3) Does the GPS work in less perfect condition, e.g. balcony, in small lanes etc?
    Thanks

    Can you zoom as you're recording video? And if so, is there 'noise' when you do so? The sony I have now (cybershot H55) has an annoying noise that drowns the sound as I zoom, therefore causes a dead silence in playback at that moment of zoom. My Sony prior to that didn't do that so i want to make sure I don't have that if I buy this one. The selling point for me is the viewfinder here :) Thank you!

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  7 років тому +1

      Yeah you can zoom while recording. It has a very faint sound but you won't be able to hear it if you're in a place where there is a lot of ambient sound like the street.

    Back in 2011 I bought the HX9 (before the Tsunami) and still today, I'm amazed with the portability and the quality, both still & video, of this camera.
    Since your instructive video (as ALL of them are) on this new HX90, I feel that I could profit on the lower price after a year on the market. Now, since I'm a declared camera hoarder, I want to know if the quality, especially on video, is going to upgrade. Because John, the quality of video on these little Cybershots equals and surpasses that of some cameras twice their price.
    Would you recommend this new HX90 to upgrade my video?
    Thanks for your valuable time.
    Keep that dog happy, please.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  7 років тому

      It would be better in terms of stills and videos, especially when it comes to low light compared to the HX9. The video side has a better codec which will mean better quality too! Definitely a good time to buy one if you're looking for an upgrade. And yes! I will keep that dog happy hehe.

    We are thinking about buying a new compact camera (we have already a reflex one) and we have could see the features of the "Sony dschx90vb.ce3" in your video ;) But what do you think about the "Sony dscwx500b.ce3"? It seems there are not too much difference.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  7 років тому

      Is the viewfinder, the GPS, the control ring on the lens. Those are the main differences. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like time lapse is available for both cameras. There isn't anything you can add to the camera to improved audio. You can record sound separately using an audio device and sync it later on in post but I think that it would be too much effort.

    Which would you recommend? Sony DSC-HX90 or Sony HX60?
    I have now seen both of your videos about the two cameras, and I find it very difficult to decide which one to those.
    I'm travelling with a backpack for three month in South-East Asia and under these conditions I know there is a chance to lose the camera. I know the Sony HX60 is cheaper than HX90, but is quality of the pictures that different? Or is it the ''selfie-function'' and stuff like that you paying extra for?
    I hope you can help me :)

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  8 років тому

      +Fjr The quality is slightly better but you're also paying more for the hardware like the viewfinder and the flip screen and extra controls. To be honest, I would go for the HX90.

    I don't understand the point of the viewfinder? I have a HX50V and I've never once had an issue with seeing the screen even in direct sunlight. Just turn the brightness up. It runs the battery down faster, but how long are you going to be in direct sunlight?

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  8 років тому +1

      +TheRealConcertKing Yeah some people don't need to have a viewfinder but its a good option for people who want it to help compose their shots or still have trouble looking at an LCD screen even if the brightness is turned all the way up.

    • @TheRealConcertKing
      @TheRealConcertKing 8 років тому

      John Sison I mean if it's a legitimate issue that people need it for and it helps them, that's great. But for me personally, I would rather have the mi-shoe and no EVF because I imagine it could greatly reduce the cost. But I'm not in charge of the design so it doesn't matter. It seems like the audio on the HX90V is pretty bad because they've downgraded the microphones, too. Probably to make room for the EVF.

    • @randalusa
      @randalusa 8 років тому +1

      +TheRealConcertKing - Viewfinders help the photographer avoid looking like a zombie with his hands way out front of the body looking at a dinky 3-inch screen. The EVF image is also much larger overall in appearance, oddly enough. More private too. Adds an extra support for handheld shutter speeds below 30. There you go, a few reasons why some of us like them.
      For me, I actually never use the LCD except for rare instances when taking pics near the ground or the selfie thing, maybe when capturing a stealth shot trying to avoid the subject(s) getting all weird about having their pic taken. Otherwise, EVF always. If only able to have one, obviously with me it would be a viewfinder.

    • @TheRealConcertKing
      @TheRealConcertKing 8 років тому

      ***** "dinky" 3 inch screen? "Hands way out in front"? How the fuck do you use a camera? Looking at a big screen while holding the camera at a normal distance, or in front of your face, like a normal person, is far less cumbersome than holding the camera to your face, close one eye, look at a 0.00000001 inch screen. Sounds like you're using it to take a lot of creepy pictures of people without their knowledge. On this type of camera, it is completely unnecessary. If you need a viewfinder, there are plenty of other options out there. I would still rather have a hot-shoe and a lower price than some relic of the past that 0.01% of users will ever use.

    • @randalusa
      @randalusa 8 років тому +1

      +TheRealConcertKing - If only 0.01% of uses wanted a viewfinder you may rest assured that nether Sony or Panasonic would have included them in their latest top-of-the-line compacts. Maybe it is in fact your desired hot shoe that is less popular.
      Neither is the viewfinder so small as you depict. All bridge cameras have an EVF around the same dimensions. Either way, you still look like a zombie holding up that camera.
      As for taing pictures of people, I used to be a newspaper photographer. Back then, people loved having their pics taken. And they made for great outcomes. Everything changed after Democrats flooded the land with perverts and terrorist creeps. You turning the time-proven art into something creepy probably reveals more of your mind than that of others.
      Regardless, I was merely trying to offer another view in a friendly way. Why you went from there into sounding like an arrogant criticizing jerk is rather eerie.

    GETTING ONE!!!! THANKS JOHN!!!

  • @harishgadgil

    Hi John, three things I want to know about the Sony DSC-HX90V.
    First, is the battery level shown in percentage (like most smartphones) or is it shown by antennae?
    Second, if I want to take a video, what is the maximum length of the video in terms of number of minutes? Please elaborate the copyright issue.
    Third, does the DSC-HX90V support 64 GB card like SF-64uz or SF-64ux?
    What I personally feel about the DSC-HX90V though I have not purchased it that there is no need of a view finder or the flip screen. If at all there is a flip screen, it has to be falling down (hinge at the bottom) or moving sideways (hinge at side). Because, apart from the selphie, you may want to take a snap holding the camera at your eye level or above eye level. You don’t generally take a snap holding the camera at 1.5 feet below your eye level. To add more, the flip screen makes taking out the camera or putting the camera back in the camera pouch a bit awkward and complicated. The viewfinder is a feature that need not be present, as you already have a good display screen.
    Because in your review itself, you have yourself spoken very little about the viewfinder or the flip screen, just one statement for each.
    Also, Sony has unnecessarily made this camera 10-15% smaller just to proclaim that it is the smallest camera with 30X optical zoom. So I feel these three factors have only added to the cost without adding any advantage as such.
    One feature that the DSC-HX90V lacks is the light exposure, which was present in the DSC-
    HX60V. So that sumps that it does not make sense in buying the DSC-HX90V, as I find that the DSC-HX60V a better option even if it was released earlier.
    Just to add to it, I already have Kodak camera with 10 Mega-pixel camera with 10X optical zoom. So I’m not buying the DSC-HX90V and I’m anxiously waiting for the predecessor to the same, which I hope is back of standard size but with more features.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  8 років тому

      +Harish Gadgil No it doesn't show the battery percentage. It shows it in bars. 29min is the most it can take before it cuts off. There is no copyright issue? Those cards are supported.

    Hi John, i'm trying to compare the HX90V and the WX500. I'll looking to replace my old compact camera for casual photos with friends/on holidays etc and don't need any professional use out of it. Which would you recommend? Is the (£50 approx.) difference in price worth it for the HX90?

    • @JohnSisonPhotography

      +Hannah M If you like the grip and think you are going to be using the built in viewfinder, then yes, I would say its worth it.

    How do you compare this camera against the dsc HX60. The 60 seems simpler to use and I like the exposure dial. The 90 has the view finder and the selfie screen. What else is important?

      +Tom Bass You have a different lens. The new model has a Zeiss lens and the older one had a G series lens. You also have a control ring on the lens to change settings too.

    Hi John. I currently have an HX20V and have been fairly pleased with the low light shots. You mentioned (and I have seen in another review) that the low light ability is not great on the HX90V. Would you know if it is worse than on the 20, just the same or better? Many thanks

    Hi John,
    Awesome video! I just bought the camera and was wondering where can I see any a5100 tutorials regarding all its features? I am very new at this camera world experience and I know very little about it. So I am pretty much just trying to self learn this camera on my own.

      Albert Joshua Vallejo I don't have a video tutorial on that camera but I guess if you simply search Sony a5100 tutorial in Google there may be some tips and lessons how to use it. I can answer some basic questions on it if you have any.

    Thanks for the great review John! I've got a Sony Nex 5t which I LOVE. But even though it has a quite handy size, when using my tele lens (Sony SEL 55-210) I need a bigger bag and it isn't that lightweight anymore. So I'm searching for another camera which should be very small but still with decent image quality and a good zoom range to take with me most of the time. The Sony DSC-HX90V sounds pretty suitable for travelling, concerts, etc when I can't or don't want to take my Nex 5t with me. What do you think? Would it also be your choice? And if so, would you buy the HX90V, the HX90 or the WX500? Thanks a lot in advance! x

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 років тому

      ReLa79 If it were me I would go with the HX90. The difference between the HX90 and the HX90V has GPS (V means it has GPS). If you need GPS go with the HX90V if not, just the HX90. I prefer having a viewfinder also.

    Great review John. I've been watching multiple camera reviews as i want to purchase a multipurpose camera under $600 AU. I'm currently deciding between the Sony HX90V, the Panasonic TZ70, the Panasonic GF7 and the Olympus E-PL7. I want something that is lightweight and purse friendly without requiring me to purchase extra lenses. Whatever camera i purchase, i'll be using it for casual photography, random shots out and about, taking pictures for my photo journal (of products and purchases) and the very odd vlog video. It's a bit hard to make a decision as i love the zoom in the compact but i'm not 100% sure if the image quality would meet the standards of a photo journal. Do you have any suggestions? I just want one camera that'll do it all. Thanks in advance.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 років тому

      Stephanie O If you're looking for an all in one camera, the HX90 is definitely the one at the top of the lists of camera I would consider. The Panasonic TZ70 sits below it in my opinion.

    Would you recommend the HX90V for concerts or is the RX100 m1 since it takes better photos on low light? What about the zoom?

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  8 років тому

      +Wawldl BC There is a big difference in zoom. The RX100 is 3.6x vs 30x zoom on the HX90. In terms of low light performance the RX100 is a much better camera. I would probably recommend the RX100 more for its low light performance.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography

      +calis krit The G7X would be the better option in this instance but the G7X is a higher end camera. A camera that you would compare to that model would be the RX100M3/RX100M4.

    Thnaks a lot for the review John. Could you offer some advice? The main things I want are thin (put in my pocket); aperture control; and some zoom. I am thinking between the following and for others' sake I'll put the amount of zoom and the thickness of the cameras:
    -Sony DSC-HX90 35.5mm thick; zoom x 30
    -Panasonic Lumix DSC-ZS100 44.3mm thick; zoom x 10
    -Canon G7 X 40.4 mm thick; zoom x 4.2
    I know the Sony DSCRX100 range have better image quality and low light performance than the HX90. Thinnest DSCRX100 with wifi seems to be type II, at 38.3mm. However I am worried about the 3.6 x zoom (or 2.9x on the mark IV).
    The Panasonic and Canon have a 1 inch sensor same as RX100 right? Would you say they are similar in terms of image quality and low light performance compared to RX100? What do you think of them? I am liking the idea of 4.2x zoom of the Canon over the RX100 range if the quality is similar.
    And for more zoom (if it turns out to be worth it), the 10x zoom of the Panasonic sounds even better, and may be enough if the image quality and low light performance are significantly better than the HX90.
    Your thoughts on this would be grateful appreciated!

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  8 років тому +1

      +Justin Senryu The panasonic and canon would have much better quality when it comes to low light. The RX100 would be the best in low light because a lens that would be perfect for low light situations but it lacks the zoom coverage of the other two. I would probably go with the ZS100 if you need the extra zoom. Either way, in terms of quality they would be much better than the HX90.

    +John Siason Does the camera focus well with optical zoom? You did a macro shot on the tree at close range, but if you were a couple of feet away and zoomed in close does the camera stay focused? I just got its little brother the wx500 and the camera will not focus when using the zoom on objects within a couple to a few feet of it, what's the point of the zoom if I have to literally be on top of the object to take a close up since the zoom won't focus.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 років тому

      +bullshiteshite Like all cameras they have a minimum focusing distance and when you zoom in on a subject for a close up shot it won't focus because you're changing the focal length. For macro shots its always best to have the lens zoomed all the way out and physically get in close to take those close up shots. BTW sorry for the late reply.

    • @bullshiteshite
      @bullshiteshite 9 років тому

      John Sison Better late than never, thanks. I had contacted Sony and then said that I should be able to focus regardless of the distance from the object, but then again they also tried to charge me $130 dollars for a new camera to fix the focus, so...returned the camera.

    I was playing with the DSC hx50v at the store since it is close to the hx90v and currently own a canon sx280hs. I am looking to upgrade and like this camera but see the canon is a little more user friendly than the hx50v I tested. Like to set up for sports shots the symbol of the man running explained it would set up to compose the shot quicker than normal for fast moving objects while the canon shoots multiple shots at one time to get for example someone playing sports say shooting or batting a ball. Where are these modes on the Sony since the dial up top does not display these modes like the canons do? I little different set up I guess. Thanks!
