These are great cars, when you see one on the rare occasion you are like wow, what is that, they age so well,
its such a sweet ride eh.. would love one as a daily
There are not many videos about this car here on UA-cam. This is one of the very good reviews that helped me understand this awesome car.
🙏 thanks mate glad you enjoyed it!
Always preferred the sound of a 1J over the 2J
likewise!
Likely due to the fact that it has a shorter stroke and its the original Yamaha tuned head unlike the 2jz that was supposedly copied by toyota. It sounds heavenly.
They rev better and cleaner also imo
Love this era of JDM cars great review Jon
late 90s early 2000s = BEST
They are a really nice car, especially the good looks of that year model!
this model is so cool.. classy looks and the 1JZ perfect
Great review mate. Can’t wait for future content including the AU giveaway and the Holden VE Commodore SSV Special Edition. From Jordan’s car reviews.
thanks jordan!
This car is very common in my country "Iraq" and the people here love it...we call it "the queen". It's a beautiful looking car, and its reliability makes it good for day to day use.
They are beautiful cars that can make big power and cruise wonderfully
Nice looking car, black when clean looks good, sounds great aswell and it's no slouch for 20 years old
Good review Jono
Tony
really cool car eh.. glad you enjoyed it tony
I just got mine last week and its the best thing i bought this year
nice buy! amazing cars
Love these boats! someday, one day...
About the Trans-topic: I believe the Mild Hybrid-ones with the 1jz/2jz-FSE engines did come with a 5 speed AT, according to the brochures if im not mistaken :) but out of all the crowns, this generation is deffo my favorite! and right after that is the 210 generation facelift, and all 3 have their perks, the athlete, royal and majesta, and then theres also the Chinese market model, LHD, different headlight-stylings and rearend-styling!
However, on the Fuel Economy, it depends on how hard you wanna push these. JZ engines can be fuel efficient. I managed to get a 6 Liter average on my NA Cresta.
And the Crown probably has the same Steering rack as the jzx100 crestas, to make it feel more boaty. however you might be able to swap in the IS200 steering rack, (xe1 generation, shares a TON of parts with the jzx, possible JZS as well) for a more sporty feeling! also, once you have driven an AT boat for a few days, you get used to it, and its actually rather pleasent
Nice ride always preferred the old school JDMs, the sound and reliability 👌🏽I can't remember if 5 speed autos were common around that time
this just missed the 6 spd auto in the next generation.. still the style the looks and the 1JZ so good
@@RossReviewsau damn that would have been better, oh well it was a long time ago
I never knew these existed with a turbo, I looked into getting one of the v6s. This verse a ba xr6t would be a good comparison, the jz’s have a great rep. I might have to look up and see some builds on these.
Great review Ross!
its seriously such a sweet daily these! 1JZ VVTI Turbo! so cool
Yeah no. Stock for stock, an xr6t muches a crown.
I have a VX version. In the 2 years I've owned it it's been perfect. Did a trip down to Cornwall and then across to the other coast 1k miles last summer and didn't miss a beat. Mpg on a run not bad at all either 👌
I'm picking up a VX this week, super keen! Unfortunately doesn't have the BBS' and the strut brace though, I'll have to source those!
@@danielgalea0 is it definitely a VX? There should be a sticker in the drivers door shut. They're great cars
They are reliable and look the business.. great cars eh
@@chappy2121 hey mate I'll have a look!
Finally. Hopefully mine will go up in value haha. Awesome mate
HAHA im sure they will man.. wicked cars
Excellent video thank you for your wonderful work.
thanks Michael :)
dream car. im importing one as soon as I find a good one
Definitely a hot car
Always loved the gadgets that Japan put in their cars even back in the eighties they were so advanced. Nice review on a nice ricer, I owned a Passage gt r31 RB20 single turbo back in the day and was such a nice car to drive. Keep up the good work Jono 👍🇦🇺🍻 good chatting to ya lastnight also, much respect for what you do👍
the JDM cars from the 90s do have some of the coolest little quirks eh.. glad your loving the channel n becoming a part of the community on here
Nice mate,a few will be drooling over this,a hardy engine but let down by the 4 speed box, imagine how she would rip if it had the mighty ZF in it lol,I enjoyed it thanks Johnny.
that would actually be a killer combo pete!
Nice car and a great review, cheers mate!
Thank you! 👍
Loving the trim on the pillars 🌺🌺🧡🧡
that was a nice touch eh
Nice vid man keep them up
glad you like em miles :)
Still waiting for mine in compliance!
Sadly no compliance available for the foreseeable future, but I can't wait!
ah man the wait must be killer.. at least its coming
@3:20 Yes, and a BMW 5 series is a luxury car, too but has some sportiness to it.
A hi stall converter would do wonders in this thing, the sound porn is strong in this one!
that 1JZ dose eh! so good
She’s a full pov pack this one. Super clean though
Such amazing cars what a beast 🤙🏾
beast eh
Loved it mate and i own a wagon , jz r the best
Thanks mate 👍🏼
glad you enjoyed it :)
As a jzs171w owner I love the car it's fantastic. Don't even want to manual convert it.
its a great car eh.. would love one
Nice work mate
🙏
hi. am zhako. i have. toyota crown 2002 D4 175. how i. maket go over. 180. can you tell me. ?????❤
interesting trim on the pillars
very cool eh.. i liked it
I keep watching this
Glad you enjoy it mate
I love my wagon! Its N/A but it sounds so amazing with an axle back exhaust and pod filter, it puts newer sportscars to shame with its 1J sound!
1JZ sounds so good eh
1j sound so distinct 😭🥰
It’s a killer engine
I'd love to see you try the newer v6 hybrid
The S210 ? or even S220 would be amazing
i would also love to try one! ive always liked the look of them
Hiya Mate nice Video 🫡, Why there no more import Crowns 1999-2009 to Oz ??
I’m not sure why there are so few
What a beauty!
VIP STYLE ;)
anyone know of any companies that would insure import cars like this?
I am planning on purchasing a twin turbo JZ but can’t decide wether I should purchase the Aristo ( 2JZ GTE ) or the Crown with the 1JZ. What would you pick? And why?
i've driven both.. if you get a early model Aristo they look really cool... but idk personally i like the crown just for the style of it.. the 1JZ is a bit more rare too.. so i like that.. but really you cant go wrong with both
The Toyota crown sounded really good
stu stu stu
Yeah man
Get on the stall a bit, get the RPM around 2k and the launch would've been more favourable :) but they're very heavy cars, especially compared to a JZX100. Also the a34 autos in these are incredibly strong, and also respond very well to modified valve bodies (shift kit). I used to have a wagon JZS171, loved it, except for the electrical gremlins isolated to the wagon model in particular....
cheers for all the info.. would love to see one thats been modified n compare the differences.. but even this relatively stock one.. damn it was impressive
you talking about the soft close boot? I'm waiting for the day it happens to me
@@bipu496 yeh mate, sure am. The mechanisms back there, and modules or whatever were drowning my battery something chronic. So I had to unplug a heap of shit back there....but there was still a battery drain elsewhere. Gotta love electrics! Which the car has plenty of, and they're now starting to show their age.....my jzx on the other hand is the perfect balance of not too much electronic components. Touch wood!
1600kg isn't that heavy for the size of car. If you compare it to modern cars or say an e class or 5 series at the time there's barely anything in it tbh. The chaser is more of an economy type car so a different class entirely. I don't mind the gearbox in my VX ot sure if the software I'd different over the Athlete v? But will probably end up manual swapping it
@@chappy2121 get what you're saying...but I've got a jzx100 and had a jzs171 wagon at the same time....pretty sure my wagon was noted down as 1800kg (not sure how accurate this notation was), either way, the 171 chassis feels far far heavier and lethargic compared to the "sportier" jzx100. There's a reason why the JZXs are used in "motorsport" in Japan far more often than any Crown model.
BTW... They used to sell the Toyota Crown here in Australia along with the 'Corona' in the 60's, 70's a & 80's.....
true i didnt know that.. the crowns are very cool
Great review mate. I have two of these now. I bought my first one in 2018, 2002 model for $14 500 (now modified). My second I recently bought, 2000 model for $19 500 (which I'm keeping stock). I love these cars.
How many km's on the 2000?
@@josephbistran6785 just over 150k
@@Jaxsta001 I just paid about $6800 for my 1999. Has around 120,000 km's. I'll receive it Thursday
@@josephbistran6785 Damn! Where are you located?
@@Jaxsta001 Japan......lol, so kinda cheating.
Sedans could also be optioned with all wheel drive. But it was never an option with the turbo models. They are also not allowed to be imported into Australia unless it's a personal import.
ah cheers for that info :)
If given the choice of a 1jz crown sedan or a r33 gtst coupe, what would you choose and why??
Me I’d get the Crown.. but the skyline is great to! I’d pick the crown because it’s more rare in 1JZ form and that engine is just so much better than the RB (personal opinion) but sad no manual in tue crown
The way the gear switches aww man i feel so cool. That sound is so cool.
It’s a wicked car eh! Love that VIP style
@@RossReviewsau from first gear to second gear yeahh amazing
My first great surf bus was a crown shit box compared 2 that one it never stopped👍
i love them crowns eh! amazing cars
You should check out the Toyota Mark X
I’d love to review one
i have the same car, i love it!
they are so good eh
Would be great if you could get your hands on a GRS204 Athlete as this is the one most people are trying to buy now, but there's no real driving reviews hanging around about them.
Can I know why people is trying to buy the grs204 now ? Thanks
ill do my best but the modern ones are harder to find here in aus..
@@RossReviewsau Should head over East when the borders start to ease, plenty of them hanging around on this side
@@nguyyenhuy2705 no one is. 171's are by far the most popular to import
This comment hasn't aged well@@Average.1JZ.Enjoyer
This model doesn't have the rear reclining seats! Such a shame, it's a very cool feature of these cars. Also seems to be missing the button in the side of the front passenger seat that lets the rear passenger move that seat for more legroom :(
was def more driver focussed this one rather than back seat focused..
Hey mate, I like your vids. So cool, I'm so interested in shipping a Toyota crown athlete to Papua New Guinea, can you help me.
Sorry can’t help 😅
クラウンは良いですねぇ〜🐰私も17クラウン乗っています🐰💕
get the guy to chance his PCV valve and clean the MAF with carby cleaner..
Yeh the blue smoke caught my attention too
thanks for the tips will let him know
All I see is a smaller Japanese model of the Celsior/LS400. But that 1JZ gte sets it apart from the Celsior.
The 1JZ is why you want this
@@RossReviewsau I agree
what exhaust is that?
sorry not sure on the exact set up
Did this model come non turbo?
I think it also may have.. not sure tho tbh
Everyone loves a Stu Stu Stu
you just gotta haha
I prefer the sound of the 1jz fse with huge holes on the down pipe 🤣🤣🤣. Trust me it sounds way better then the gte with an upgraded exhaust.
love a 1JZ
Hey man could you do a review of the S180 Crown Athlete 3.5 grs184 ?? Way better than the V8 crowns imo goes hard dont look down on just cos its a 6 cylinder. Athlete 170 with the 6 cylinder is faster than the v8 of that series too!! Sick cars
if i find one ill 100% do a review :)
@@RossReviewsau Awesome bro id let you do mine if you were in NZ i bloody love these car aye 😂 crowns are sick
Use my 184 I live in Victoria
Where can I buy this car???
japan.. hahah
170,171,175
What’s these wheels called please bro?
sorry not sure mate
Looks like D-Speed DS01 rims..
SuPer !
Thank you! Cheers!
Kick 2 passengers out and wind up the motor before take-off...It made a huge difference to my old diesel Pajero.
for sure it would have helped it

Why would they put a manual transmission in a luxury vehicle? If you want manual, just convert to an R154.
its still a sports luxury vehicle and the 4 speed is a week point. even a 6 spd ZF would be much better
I guess we'll agree to disagree. If you wanted to make it manual, you can. If you wanted to make the 4 speed better, there's shift kits, rebuild kits etc. Toyota's A340/A340E is stout, can handle decent power and is certainly one of the best 4 speed transmissions appropriate for its era. Great review!
@@doolza92 a quick shift definitely would make it better.. just wish it had a manual option even..
@@RossReviewsau Absolutely. Modifying these luxury sedans for responsiveness certainly improves the overall experience. If anyone asks for a guide on how to manual convert these with a factory R154, I can get them the comprehensive guide.
good style(^^)/
🔥✅
I wish you'd done a 0-100 without four people in the car
Hard to kick the owner out unfortunately
Absolutely loved the car until you said d speed wheels :(
😂😂😂
Kick everyone out the car n do the 0-100🤣🤣
HAHA i wish it was that easy
