  • When it comes to books it's hard for me to pick a favorite but there are some textile art books I simply can't live without. So here are my favorite books for textile art and fiber art. If you love fabric and fibers, slow stitching and (or) embroidery, I think you will find one or two books here you will enjoy. Beginning fiber artists should not be intimidated by the art in these books. Creative inspiration spurs us all to grow our skills.
Let me know if your favorite textile art book made the list!
If you think a friend would enjoy this video, please consider sharing it.
Here's the link to Fibre Arts Take Two where many fabulous textile artists teach.

I am honoured to be in your collection and have so many of the books you review and have reviewed some. Love Annemieke Mein and so proud to be working alongside others in the Batsford stable. Not surprised they feature heavily in your book choices Why wouldn't they?

So much of my work is created because I could never purchase the original. I’m not delusional enough to think I could ever create the original, either. But the work that makes me long for it also inspires me to try to create something that will fill that longing. I knew I could see value in the old papers and magazines. Then Covid hit. I found UA-cam. And I found the junk journal community. Then to fiber art. Then here. I’m home. I love it. Art Inspired Art. I love all of the beautiful things we create but more importantly. I love the crafters. They are so encouraging as well as inspiring. It is a fulfilling Art for me. Books, UA-cam, and YOU.

@@SusanTaylorBrown so funny you should say that. I’m not a wealthy crafter so try to use a lot of substitute material. Cardboard and brown bag are a favorite. Bring on the challenge, Dear Friend. We will gave a blast with it.

so true about affording it. we have an organisation in sydney where people contribute their unused fabric, threads etc so we can repurchase at reduced prices often. Very useful. I also create because I cannot afford the original. You just helped me understand this process. I don't copy the artist i try and rework it my way often because of course I could never afford the original or think that was such a beautiful idea I would also like one of those around me. Thank you for helping me to understand this process Sandy

Susan, leave it to YOU, to have all these amazing fiber books at your finger tips. I did purchase Shelly Rhodes first fiber book on sale at JoAnn's about a year ago. Thank you so very much for all these wonderful titles! Think I will look into a few of them at my library and then see if I "need" to purchase any. I just LOVE your book reviews, Susan! Thank you.

So inspirational Susan. I have long loved the work of Annemieke Mien and also know it is way beyond my capabilities. Or patience! They are lovely books. I don't have any stitch books except for free-motion and ribbon work but I have a large collection of quilt related books, both traditional and experimental, as I was a quilter for a long time. I also have books on dye techniques and other surface design techniques like batik and silk screening. I have a couple of wonderful books on making silk paper (which uses wallpaper paste to hold the fibres together) and making your own art materials. Don't you love books! I long ago decided never to buy novels ever again as the library has plenty of these and I rarely read a book twice so all my books are reference or art/craft. And I can never pass up an opportunity to buy another inspiring book! Thanks for showing these.
I also have noted some of the authors and will check them out further.
I am not stitching atm as I am busy doing other stuff but your lives and other videos are stirring the juices and maybe this winter I will start doing stuff with stitch again. Good winter activity. xoxo
