Smetana est ainsi un modèle inégalable de l'artiste national tout en étant aussi le génie par lequel les aspirations et les espoirs tchèques se sont exprimés dans une langue expressive et plus que tout autre compréhensible. Smetana incarna son sens national ardent dans l'opéra Libuse et dans le cycle symphonique Ma Patrie. Longtemps et avec l'esprit d'observation propre aux grands artistes il se prépara à sa tâche, créer dans ces deux œuvres l'apothéose musicale de sa nation. Il savait que pour une aussi noble tâche il fallait des forces et des capacités entièrement développées. A l'âge mûr de 47 ans, lorsque ses forces créatives culminaient et qu'il maîtrisait son art avec une souveraineté absolue, il entama alors la composition de ses chefs d'œuvre nationaux : Libuse et Ma Patrie. Bien que Smetana, lorsqu'il écrivait Libuse, avait en vue de créer un style orchestral national et bien qu'à cette époque (18711872), il se préparait à composer Vysehrad, un certain temps se passa avant que cette idée ne mûrit pleinement et ne cristallisa entièrement en lui. En 1874 seulement, Smetana se décida à composer Vysehrad, poème symphonique qu'il préparait à la tête depuis quelques années. Le cycle tout entier fut terminé seulement sept ans après qu'il en conçut l'idée, étant donné qu'il n'écrivit le dernier poème Blaník qu'en 1879. Ma Patrie est donc le fruit d'un travail long et approfondi, d'une préparation intense et réfléchie qui, liée à l'art du compositeur, donna naissance à une œuvre aussi magistrale. Pourtant Ma Patrie suscite le respect encore par autre chose, par le destin de son auteur. Pendant l'été 1874, le sort implacable frappa Smetana de surdité. I gotta admit it--you hit the Reference Recordings nail squarely on the head with this. Occasionally I've quibbled with your choices as references, but not on this one. Kubelik's finest performance, surpassing my previous favorite with the Vienna Phil, and a recording second to none. And the audience does not sing along! Probably still couldn't believe this second Prague Spring, the one that will last. Kubelik almost makes it a freedom anthem for all of Eastern Europe with the long-overdue withering of communism. Well done, sir!

ah, such a recording... I've heard Karajans, Harnoncourt, Belehovek, but I like this one above them .... Dorati had a great one with the Concertgebougww, SZELL, and Kertesz with the Israel Philharmonic ... but then Talich has a fantastic one that probably surpasses them all

Not in its grammar. But all ships are referred to as 'she' in English and there are numerous other examples. England itself is feminine -- Britannia. The use of 'Fatherland' is a parallel case.
